The Heat are on a 16-2 run, after an 18 point win over the Pacers. George got ejected for a 2nd technical in the 2Q, but the win is still impressive. Defense, passing and 3-point shooting.

The 2 Johnsons, James and Tyler are averaging 26 points off the bench. James Johnson can play: 15/7/8 with 2 blocks. He'll get a big raise over his 1 year $4mil contract. They could make noise in the playoffs, unless they end up the 8th seed.

Lonzo Ball is going to be a franchise player...he is one of the more talented players I have seen at his age...he is in full control of the whole game...have not seen Fultz play yet this year but if he is being touted as going ahead of Ball he most be very legit...I would love to see Ball in a Celtics uniform next year...I think he is going to be an excellent NBA player immediately...Ball and Jaylen Brown on the fast-break could be a deadly combo for years...
Not sure about that jumper though.

The FG and 3 PT % seem to be fine...I think the issue is in this day and age where every kid has private lessons or over-coaching we aren't used to a style that looks different which his certainly does...I am not saying he is Magic Johnson but there are definitely things he does that reminds me of Magic at MSU...and I don't think I have ever made a Magic comparison because he was as good as there was and he too had a unique style...

This reminds me of when some guys would call reaching in continually a 'technique'.  It's not a style, it's horrible form.

The brother just went 8-28 behind the arc and got bounced from the CIF Southern Section semis.

Mater Dei (31-1) also avenged a loss to Chino Hills (29-2) earlier this season in the Tarkanian Classic Platinum Division championship game on Dec. 20.

One of the biggest differences, both literally and figuratively, from the Dec. 20 matchup compared to Friday night was an obvious one, according to Mater Dei coach Gary McKnight and just about everyone else with eyes, was the presence of 7-foot-2 center Bol Bol.

“Funny how a 7-foot-2 guy alters things,” McKnight said. “He’s just getting better and better. He blocks shots and played the whole game. He definitely gives us a different look than back (in December).”

The guy that dominated the game was a 17 year old, 7-2 Bol Bol.  Pretty tall for a kid!  Maybe not as tall as his dad, Manute Bol!  I look forward to seeing this young man in the NBA.

Is he any thicker than his dad? Manute was listed at 200 lbs, but I'm guessing it was probably a bit less than that. He looked like slender man.

link has a clip.  It's hard to make a judgement on a 17 year old, but he looks to be about his father's size (not height) right now.  He's more fluid imo.  Of course Manute didn't play basketball until he was in high school, and his son was likely born with a basketball in his hands, which might explain his movement.

So he's always this inconsistent?

I'll say though, he has some hop and excitement to him. Lord knows this crap team could use it.
Yep. I'm a fan of the stroke and hops but my god, you never knew if he'd show up. I'd like to think he becomes more consistent in ORL now that he'll be asked to do more and probably get 14+ shots a night.

I played baseball with McKnights son last year.  I know none of your care.

Definitely looks more fluid than his dad, also a bit thicker, but still as skinny as Brandon Ingram.

Is he the best in the family or do his brothers have similar upside?

Lonzo's dad says he's only playing for the Lakers so it's a moot point.
"I'm not trying to say he won't play for a different team," he said. "But I'd like him to play for the Lakers because it's home, and I'd love him to learn from Magic [Johnson]. He's the best guard ever to me, and nobody better for Lonzo to learn from than Magic Johnson."

Warriors release Briante Weber (who is headed to CHA), expected to sign Jose Calderon. Not sure I like this tbh.
It does seem weird because wouldn't a defensive specialist be better for them than an offensive specialist as one of their last bench guys?  What exactly does calderon offer them that they don't have?

Earlier Saturday, Ball told KCUB Sports Radio 1290 in Tucson that he wants Lonzo to play for Jeanie Buss' franchise so much that he would discourage other teams from picking his son in this summer's NBA draft.

"I want him to be a Laker," Ball told KCUB. "He's gonna be the first one that's homegrown, and trust me, he'll do the same thing he's doing at UCLA."

In response to a question about the Lakers' hypothetically securing the third pick in the draft, the elder Ball told the radio station that he would tell the top two squads to avoid drafting his son.

A bit surprising that no team has signed Terrence Jones yet.   A talented player at a minimum contract that cleared waivers.   I look at a team like the Cavs who have an injured Kevin Love that could use a nice big to back up Tristan.   I could also see Jones maybe helping the Heat make the playoffs or possibly give the Celts some added depth.   Will be curious to see if he gets signed and where.

way to go Mr. Ball, get your kid boo'd galore for nothing he did. Does this dope understand Lakers may not even get a lottery pick? Maybe Mr. Ball should keep his mouth shut and not try to hurt his son's career before he even gets a chance in the NBA

3 pt % is ok, but in the NBA against better, longer athletes he'll get his shot blocked. Doubt he'll be able to hit a pull up jumper in the NBA with how slow/funky his shot is. He'll be Ricky Rubio at best in the NBA if he doesn't fix that jumper.

What are the odds of the Jazz re-signing Hill?
Almost assured. The PG crop is pretty weak outside of Curry so they have no reasonable way to replace him if they keep Hayward. If Exum was showing that he was ready, I think there would be a chance of letting him walk, but Exum looks like a bust.

ETA: I bet he gets an extension within the next month maxing out his 2017 salary and giving him something like a 3 year $60 million contract.

Manute Bol lived his last few years a couple neighborhoods over from where I live.  It was weird seeing him around town.  My most vivid memory was being in a furniture store near the front door when he walked in.  He was wearing a suit and tie and had to duck to fit in the doorway.    He said he retired in northeast Kansas because the highest concentration of Sudanese refugees from the region where he grew up were there, so he also moved there to help them out.

Started hearing about Bol Bol the player when he was in middle school here.  The big thing I noticed about him was how good his dribbling was for a player his height - he could stay in control and keep it low with both hands, could go between his legs to protect the ball from an approaching defender.  Also a decent passer.  Had a slow release on his shot but it went in and had range.

Word is he became a bit of a diva when he started getting attention.  He got kicked out of a high school as a 9th grader - wanted to play for a basketball coach out-of-district, never filed any paperwork to transfer, just showed up for enrollment and figured it would all work out.  Then transferred to a private school that had recently produced a couple of D-I players, wore out his welcome there and was asked to leave.  So, he moved to California to get a fresh start.

Hope he gets his head on straight.  He has NBA talent.

Jrue will be out there, but I do not like this answer, especially now that I'm assuming the Pels will re-sign Jrue for their win-now mode, but it makes sense.

That's part of the reason salaries get so inflated. Once a team is at or near the cap, they are often faced with either overpaying their own players so they won't consider leaving or letting them walk without the ability to replace them.

is it possible though that if they are keeping Hayward, they might not want to hamstring themselves with a 30+ player given some of the other young guys they have coming up in the following years?

With Hayward and Gobert, that will be about $50 million with those 2 alone starting next year.  What will Hill count against the cap with that suggested 3 yr, 60 mill extension?

Looking at guard salaries dished out last off-season, I think that 20 million a year for 3 years seems pretty reasonable. I doubt he would get much more than that on the open market, so they could kinda sort of spread it over 4 years (give him a raise this year, extend him the next 3, it's a funny CBA quirk of use current free cap space). They could do something like take his salary up to $19million this year, giving him a $11 million raise (they could actually go up to something like a $14 million raise before they hit the 2017 cap). The next 3 years could decrease in value from 17.5 in year 1 to 16.5 in year 2 to 16 in year 3 or something.

Both Davis and Cousins score 30+ and the Pelicans still lose. At least they didn't get blown out again
I said it earlier in this thread--but the problem with the Pelicans was not talent--it was coaching.   Even before the Cousins trade--a well coached team featuring Anthony Davis, Jrue Holiday, Tyreke, Terrence Jones..etc--should have been the favorites competing for the last spot of the Western Conference Playoffs.  Now they commit highway robbery--and get Cousins for pennies--and go 0-3 with one of the better rosters in the NBA.   With that being said--I do think that sheer talent alone should start winning the Pelicans some games--but don't confuse these upcoming wins as being a result of great coaching.

:lmao:  the freaking pelicans do not have one of the better rosters in the NBA. Their 4-12 is worse than an expansion team.

Stop it man. You have arguably the best center in the game, the best PF in the game--and easily a top 15pg in the game on one roster--and you are still complaining about a lack of talent? You're telling me that coach pops, spoelstra, doc, Stevens couldn't make that team into a legit top 5 in either conference?  Learn basketball before arguing for the sake of arguing.

The good news is all their players on reasonable contracts will be free agents at the end of the year. They'll get a nice look at all the minimum free agents next year that don't want to go to a team that has a shot to win anything.

Given their contracts and everything, how many teams would trade rosters with the Pelicans right now?

No, that roster is not top 5 in either conference and no coaching could get them there.

why did the Pelicans waive Casspi?  What is his problem?  I thought he at least had the capability be at least a useful piece?
I had no idea they did that. After the trade I assumed he would start for them. Makes no sense, even if he was hurt for the rest of the year, his early bird rights could have been helpful in resigning him. Their roster is really really shallow.
