I meant on defense. When he blitzes the screen,the dribbler usually attacks him and it's tough for him to stop them from turning the corner. A couple of times last night, he literally just stood behind the screen and left his teammates (jones on 1 occasion) to fend for himself. Perrantes got a wide open look as a result. 

But yes, he's not bad on offense and Allen and Kennard leave something to be desired when it comes to feeding the post. They missed Bolden on a few occasions last night  (including once when he had perrantes on him)

Giles continues to take baby steps and show flashes. Still stinks in pick and roll due to his lack of lateral quickness.

Obviously an incredible performance by tatum but I continue to worry that he's gonna go hero ball in a big spot and cost duke a game. (Or even their season). 

Don't take too much out of the defensive performance last night. UVA's offense is garbage. Nice adjustments by K to go to the 3/4 court press and throw them off their rhythm.

I was actually surprised by Bolden on D...but wow was he an awkward duck on ice when he got the ball.

He's got a really interesting build...he looks like he could blossom into a really powerful presence...or just get doughy and more awkward.

Should be interesting to see how he develops in the offseason.

Agreed on Tatum...I liked that he stepped up...and it'd be nice to see him go on a run...but I want him to remain the third option or so if Grayson or Kennard aren't able to carry the load.

 
Man...I am really starting to like Bolden.

He's inconsistent as hell but he's shown signs at both ends.

The little baby hook and pick and roll were great earlier today.

He works hard defensively and digging rebounds...although he's unsure where to be at times.

If he grows into that body and gains some consistency...dude could via for Conference POTY in coming years.

Kennard all ball on that block.

I guess makes up for that ticky tack nonsense foul on Collins to end the half.

 
Duke's defense is atrocious.  At a certain point, it falls on the coach.  Switching everything so Collins can get any mismatch he wants.  

 
No idea how WF didn't take advantage of that mismatch underneath on their last trip.

I don't know what it is about Manning but I keep thinking the team is going to endbound the ball to him and he'll drain a shot.  Dude still looks like he could ball.

 
Bolden could be really good; big body, great feet.  Don't like where this duke team is at all.   Another year of living by the jumper but with no defense.

Yeah I didn't think that was a bad screen at all but I also don't think Lydon was fouled after that steal.  Whatever, another big win.  I think GT needs to go 3-1 against NCSU, ND, Pitt, and Syracuse again.  19-12 plus ACC Tournament should get them in with wins over UNC, FSU, and ND as well as at least one win against fellow bubble team Syracuse.

So its sort of weird. Based on the eye test, Duke is terrible on Defense and maybe shoots too many 3's.

The facts: Per KenPom, Duke is 39th in adjusted defense (far from elite, but still nearly top 10% in the country). That being said, the most recent national champs (at least going back the past few years) were all ranked much higher. However, The 15 team wasn't ranked especially high at this point in the year and came on down the stretch and in the tournament. (eventually finishing 12th)

As far as 3's go, the following was posted on a Duke board prior to the Wake game (not sure how much it has changed over the weekend)

The average D1 team scores 30% of their points from behind the arc. Duke's number is 31% (although it has been rising recently)

They're 113th out of 351 teams in terms of 3's attempted per game.  Above average, but probably ideal based on how well they shoot and how banged up/not that good their inside players are.

Every perimeter player in Duke's rotation (Kennard, Allen, Tatum, Jones and Jackson) is shooting <35% from 3. Allen and Jones are the lowest art .356. Its in their best interest to shoot open 3's.  If all those guys are off on a single night AND Kennard and Tatum's driving games get shut down and they lose as a result, so be it.

One of the all-time bull#### calls. Come back from the dead in final minutes (like we always do) and ref makes sure we have no chance to win. Worst call since Scoop backcourt vs. Marquette 2011. See you final game of regular season Jackets and hopefully in acc tourney because you're going to get crushed both times. Absolute joke.

Their lack of a rim protector really hurts.  They're going to need to stay hot from the outside.  They lack any type of post game and besides moments here and there from tatum and kennard, they get little points in the paint.   I have no idea what happened to Allen's drive game, but he seems to just be living on the outside.

Agree on the rim protection. Its a huge problem especially with 2 Minus defenders (allen and Kennard) on the perimeter. I still don't understand why K doesn't pack it in more.

I just can't worry about the offense though. They're # 7 on KenPom despite all the injuries and Allen playing like general garbage (by his standards) for like 80% of the season. I think his lack of driving is a combo of him being banged up all year (first the turf toe, now the ankle), his general lack of aggressiveness after the tripping stuff and him slimming down to be quicker (after basically being a battering ram last year). I don't see it changing at this point. Let him be the spot up guy and let Tatum, Kennard and Jackson (who are all excellent drivers) attack the paint.

And honestly, which of the national contenders is really all that post-oriented? Even UNC, with all its size,   Post offense just isn't the way efficient basketball is played anymore.

It was a bad call and I already said so earlier in the thread.  It didn't cost Syracuse the game though.  That's the funny whining part.  It also wasn't the only bad call in the game.  GT was the better team tonight.

Ball pressure has always been K's style even when they've gotten killed by it at times.   I wouldn't consider Tatum, Kennard or Jackson excellent at driving.   Kennard is probably the best of the bunch, but he's more crafty in the paint than a getting to the rim type of guy.  He's the only one of the 3 that I see consistently getting the ball into the paint.  Tatum looks like he should be able to get to the rim more especially considering he's frequently matched up with a bigger guy, but he settles for the jumper a lot.    My concern hence the initial post was that if they go cold from the outside, there's no plan B.    Not enough transition points, put back points, points from the line (outside of end of game) or points in the paint from drives or postups to be a good fall back.

3 bull#### calls on Roberson alone in that game. Homecooking all night. And bull#### it didn't cost us the game. You can't know that. It cost us a chance to tie or take the lead. You really think they'd call THIS foul on UNC or Duke in that situation? Down home BBQ league refs don't like yanks.

Dude, you're insane.  GT doesn't get Duke/UNC treatment.  You're focused on a singular call in a singular situation.  I don't think Lydon got fouled after his steal under the basket but they never showed the replay.  They took away a big three point play from Tadric on a BS call.  Whatever you can cry if you want but GT was the better team and won the game.

 
The clown flopped coming around the screen. Jimmy's lips after the play: "that's a horrible call". He hates Roberson. If he thought the call was legit he'd light into Roberson. Instead he goes right to the ref.  Guy has been watching hoops for 40+ years, I think we can take him at his word when the call is horse####. If it's a real venue/school he rips his jacket off but it's GTech so just a word with the ref and a shrug.

He did get fouled and two plays early got slapped/scratched across the arm and actually showed the wound to the ref who ignored it. Bunch of hackers. Roberson comes in and gets 3 fouls for breathing. Thompson picked up 4 fouls and 2 of the 4 were when his shorts brushed the shooter. YOU'RE insane. Fix was in tonight. Southern boys stick together.

If the best argument you can make is that Boeheim thought it was a bad call, you're in trouble.  There's a reason every opposing team's fans bring Kleenex to games to wave at the guy who cries about calls more than any other coach alive.

His rant seemed to mainly be sticking up for a colleague and complaining about the level of pressure/expectation in the MBB coaching profession. He can't be expected to be aware of how a program in another conference has imploded due to both lack of quality coaching and personal issues of the head coach, so I don't really blame him for being off the mark in his criticism. Unlike the national media, whose job is to actually understand the situations they write/report about.

Latest post in the ongoing series at SFN: ACC BB Update for 2/20

GT is currently shown as on the bubble in this blog and as last team in by the Dance Card. Fortunately for them, their schedule looks pretty good for these last couple weeks, so I'm guessing they will get in even with no ACCT wins. If they don't get in, they have only their terrible OOC SOS to blame.

Wake is shown on the bubble here, but their prospects look pretty poor to me. 1-9 vs. RPI Top 50. Kudos to them for playing a tough schedule, but you have to win more than one of them.

Miami is shown on the bubble here, and certainly their schedule provides opportunity to win their way in... but it seems more likely they could lose their remaining 4 regular season games. If so, that would mean they would be 2-11 against RPI Top 50 teams entering the ACCT. Combined with their dismal OOC SOS, that would probably mean they would need at least one upset over a Top 50 RPI team in the ACCT.

Syracuse is shown as out here, and probably needs to upset Duke or Louisville or win at least 2 ACCT games to have a shot. Another team that may have scheduled itself out of consideration.

This entry does not show Pitt or Clemson on the bubble, presumably because each has such a dismal ACC record.

Looks like 8 or 9 ACC teams will make it to me, not 10.

Thoughts?

Pitt basically needs to win out (Wake, GT, NC and VA). That would make them 8-10 in conference, but would also give them enough impressive wins (NC, FL State, MD, Va twice, GT, Wake and Syr) to (I think) make up for being sub .500. If the team that played against Fl State, VA, MD, and Duke shows up, they could actually do it.  Of course, it's more likely that the team that played Louisville, Clemson and Miami shows up in at least 2 of those games.
