2017 ACC Sports (2 Viewers)

It's a win over a good team but man is it frustrating when duke can't put the hammer down.

And if I'm Mohammad bamba, there's zero chance I'm picking duke. Tatum played "center" tonight despite fsu getting layup after layup down the stretch.
When's the last season Duke played multiple bigs at same time for an extended portion of the season?

I think that depends on who you consider a big. Is Jefferson a big? Was Jabari Parker? Was Ryan Kelly?

2016- Would a Ingram-Jefferson-Plumlee front court have been the norm if Amile had been healthy? Hard to say, since it became clear that Ingram was more of a matchup problem at the 4

2015- Jefferson started next to Okafor for the first half of the year until the Winslow at the 4 experiment took off.

2014- Amile and Parker started for most of the year from what I remember.

2013- Mason Plumlee and Ryan Kelly were the starting front court the entire year other than when Kelly was hurt

2012- Plumlee 1 and 2 and Kelly all averaged between 20 and 28 MPG (3rd, 4th and 6th on the team)

In 2010, they went pretty big with Thomas and Zoubek up front down the home stretch.

This year has just been very odd. In recent weeks, the D has been good at times (even for entire halves) but they just seem tired down the stretch. Guys like Allen and Kennard are bad at containing the dribble when they're fresh. I could have beaten Kennard to the bucket in the 2nd half tonight. Slow white dudes with tired legs and no rim protector inside (or at best, a gimpy Jefferson) is a REALLY bad combination.

Obviously Bolden hasn't proven that he's anything close to NBA ready, but coming back is a tough pill to swallow when you consider the very real possibility that Wendell Carter will be playing center next year. And there's no chance Bamba willingly signs up after watching how this season has gone. Duke could be VERY small next year if Bolden throws in the towel and Jeter transfers.

Looks like Allen got a payback tripping by FSU.

Can't blame them though.

But I still can't believe how Childress didn't get punished more than a technical for running from almost mid-court to bear-hug and slam Allen down on the bench in that Wake game earlier this year.  That was insane.

I understand the thought process on Kelly, as he did most of his scoring from the outside.  But parker was mostly an inside scorer in the 2nd half of his season.  He was also a pretty ferocious rebounder.

Now, he shouldn't have been playing center but I still consider him a big based on  how he played in college (after the initial flurry of outside shooting he relied on for the first couple of months). A college lineup with jabari parker at the 4 would not be "small ball" to me if he had a normal sized center next to him.

I didn't think Grayson even made contact on that elbow but doesn't matter...can't throw your arm that high while trying to swim past.  Good call.

So far...another classic.

Damn I love this rivalry.

Although...I may be very upset at the end of the night.

Duke putting on a clinic on getting to the basket/free throw line.

Still can't believe UNC does not pound it down more...the formula to beat Duke almost every year is get a couple of their starters in foul trouble.

They rely on their starters more than any other school...year after year.

Rough game for Tatum.  Would've liked to see more Bolden to see if he could've helped on the glass since they're not taking advantage of going small.

One half of ACC bracket has UNC, Louisville, Duke, Syracuse, and Miami.  And Clemson/NCSU as well.  Other has FSU, ND, UVA, VT with WF, GT, Pitt and BC.  Seems a little inbalanced.  Whoever survives that top half will freaking earn it.  Next week going to be fun.

Wanna know what Bolden's per minute rebounding numbers are for the season? I'll give ya a hint....pretty sure I could match them.

2 great games. I'd like to say I'm hoping for a rubber match on Friday night, but Duke would likely be gassed for it.

Sucks to lose, but Duke battled tonight. Berry was smoking in the first half and UNC won a war of attrition on the glass in the 2nd. UNC just made some key shots and Duke missed FT's.

He's that bad?   Back to back year of big time recruits that can't produce.

Coming into tonight's game he had 12 defensive rebounds in 148 minutes played. That's not good.

He's obviously a huge disappointment. He was known as a kid with a very inconsistent motor, so its not surprising that his early season injuries slowed his progress so badly.

Giles obviously a disappointment as well, but I truly believe its the injuries. His defensive awareness sucks though.

Tatum has been as advertised, as has Jackson.  Obviously too early to judge on White and DeLaurier.

Last year's group was a mixed bag really. Ingram was great. Kennard didn't shoot well but his ability was clear and he's shown that this year. Thornton showed potential (other than shooting, which was terrible) but this dad pulled the ripcord. Considering he arrived a year earlier than expected, I didn't think he was awful.  Jeter was a freshman disaster but took some positive steps this year before the back surgery.

So they've had 1 huge bust each year,(Jeter and Bolden)  but other than that, I don't think the freshmen have been all that bad. You've basically had 3 home runs, 1 guy that blew up as a soph, 1 lunatic dad-related transfer, 2 busts, an injury and some incompletes.

Justin Jackson POTY but wasn't even unanimous first team all conference.  Kennard was though.  Collins, Colson, and Mitchell join them on first team.

Pastner wins COTY.

How is Jackson not unanimous?
Agree. What Bonzie Colson accomplished this year with that Notre Dame roster was more worthy of PoY than either Jackson or Kennard, but the person(s) that left Jackson off the first team should really have to explain their thought process. The first team seemed pretty cut-and-dried this year.

Duke's starters just too tired...missing all kinds of free throws now.
I think Bilas pointed out the potential for about midway through the 1st half. Said the game was at UNC's pace and that could hurt Duke in the end. Think they were just clearly tired based on the missed FTs.

Does Duke even really push for the tourney title? 4 games in 4 days with a potential string of Louisvlle, UNC, and the FSU-Notre Dame-Virginia. They win, they probably move up to a 3, maybe even a 2 seed, but some of those guys would be gassed. Obviously like Duke's chances much better in the NCAA format.

I think Roy Williams deserved coach of the year.  His team was picked second, virtually every team other than Duke was better than expected, he played maybe one game with all of his top 6-7 guys, and the Heels ended up two full games clear of the best conference in the country.

Its a silly award though so I guess that's to be expected.

Last Look at the Bubble

Looks like 9 ACC teams should make it, with Wake winning their way in with a great final week. Syracuse, Clemson, and GT all need a miracle ACCT run to get in.
Lunardi has Syracuse safely in. Those two wins away from home (OT vs state and buzzer beater at Clemson) are awful.  It will worth it to see boeheim whine if they get left out.

Vandy doesn't seem like a team that should be the first 15 loss at large team.  Xavier has won once in a month.  Bubble is awful.

Xavier has been decimated by attrition. (Injury to summers and the other dude leaving the program mid year). They're not a tournament team as presently constructed.

Hope wake makes it. Collins is incredible and I think they could give 6 or 7 seed trouble in the first round.

I don't see how Syracuse can feel safe. As of a year ago, only 6 teams had ever received an at large bid with 14 losses, and Syracuse will have 14 losses if they need an at large bid (i.e., assuming they don't win the ACCT). According to the article I linked, their current RPI rank is worse than any team ever to get an at-large bid.

I would think at minimum they must beat Miami on Wednesday to get a bid, and that would be their most impressive win of the season away from home. I'm sure if they went on to beat UNC on Thursday, they would get a bid, but I don't see that happening.

Heels gotta come out wearing "The Ceiling is the Roof" warmup shirts this weekend.

Other teams can join in too.  Maybe Duke can do "We'll go to the ends of the earth" or something.

Pretty sure duke isn't making it to the weekend.
I have no idea what to make of them. I could see them winning the ACC Tourney or losing to Louisville. Same goes for them in the NCAAs. Could make a run to the Final Four or be out in the 2nd round.

i wouldn't have voted for him for 1st team.

oso acc productivity rankings

  1. Dennis Smith, NCS
  2. John Collins, WF
  3. Bonzie Colson, ND
  4. Luke Kennard, D
  5. Michael Young, Pit
  6. Ben Lammers, GT
  7. Bryant Crawford, WF
  8. Jayson Tatum, D

i thought this was just a :homer:  post, when i first read it yesterday. but after finishing my statistical analysis of ACC players, i think you may be right.

Question for UNC fans: would you prefer to have Justin Jackson win POY or Roy win COY?

Edit: never mind. My post was outdated due to some changes in the standings in the last couple of weeks. UNC obviously beat wake who finished 10th in the league
