Nice win by Suns on road at Oracle. Team's definitely making big strides. Still few years from playoffs.  And they got to get a legitimate NBA starting PG. Kelly Oubre has been huge. He's everything they wanted Ariza to be on the court. And not at the end of his career. They can't let him walk. He's better than both Bridges and Jackson right now and only slightly older.

Bridges has a nice future as a complimentary piece. Jackson not so much IMO and they probably aren't getting much of anything in return at this point. Dude just can't shoot and he's never going to be the guy in Phoenix. His upside is probably Corey Brewer.

Hey modogg, do you have any hot takes on MLK Jr or Abe Lincoln or maybe even the 4th of July while you are on such a roll?  Cripes I haven't seen someone so consistently off base since Rickey Henderson.

I didn't want to clutter up the NCAA thread, but I found this comment perplexing.  I think that the East playoffs are going to be awesome, especially 2nd round and after, plus seeing Brooklyn in will be cool.

GSW seems more vulnerable than in the past, particularly because of injuries.  Nuggets on the rise, OKC and HOU trying to consolidate previous gains.

And I think the the Bucks and Raps can give GSW a run for their money in the finals.  Either those will be a lot more interesting than another Lebron-dragged-Cavs getting squashed by the Dubs.

Obviously part of the reason I think the NBA/playoffs are less interesting these days are because my own favorite team is now totally irrelevant and will be for many years. That definitely affects my perspective, just as I would guess the Sixers being very good after years of misery affects yours.

I don't think Golden State is vulnerable, though. I think they've won their last two titles playing at far less than 100%.  The possibility that they might have to actually try hard this playoffs doesn't hold much allure to me, because I'm sure they'll do it. I still think people underestimate them, strange as it seems. This is by far the greatest collection of talent in NBA history, and they've got a deadly system and a good coach and years of experience together under their belts.

LeBron being out also sucks, for obvious reasons.

Agree that the East should be a fun ride, though. Knowing that reaching the Finals is the ceiling for any of these teams is somewhat limiting, but that still be a huge accomplishment and also incredible for long-suffering fans in Toronto, Milwaukee or Philly. I do look forward to watching that.

Don't forget about us recent bandwagon Celtics fans.  I mean they haven't made the finals since I started rooting for them 3 seasons ago.  It had been a long rough road.

 Will be interesting to see what he's offered as he's restricted. Particularly when max/near max contract is being thrown around for Tobias Harris & Jimmy Butler. 

He's made himself a lot of money since the trade. His play starting to get noticed around the league.

4/60 maybe?  His usage has jumped a bit in Phoenix and he’s still well below average from distance, but anyone who has a whiff of 3 & D potential on the wing is going to be well compensated.

I hope that's the case as the Suns would match that in a heartbeat IMO.

He's been really good since becoming a starter for the Suns. I've watched most of the games and the energy he brings is unreal. Really infectious to the team. Unfortunately I think it's starting to get noticed around the league as they've started becoming a respectable team since that happened. And he's come up big against 2 of best teams league (MIL/GS).

I'm hopeful the Suns can lock him up with a reasonable deal and then spin Jackson/TJ Warren/Bridges (I'd try to keep the latter) for something...preferably a PG. If that fails, they could be in position to draft Morant or deal for a PG.

JMO Oubre's in for a massive payday -- even if not to the same extent -- as fellow late bloomers/ former Laker castoffs D'Angelo Russell and Julius Randle.

Most recent Open Floor podcast has the guys reflecting on/celebrating the Lakers dive. They wondered of Laker fans will boo Lebron when he passes Kobe.

 
small victories i guess but being excited the future of a crappy team beating anyone at around the game 68 mark of an NBA season is really kinda meaningless

sorta like the Knicks giving a 4 year max contract to a career 6 minutes per game guy who goes for 50 in the season finale or something

it is impressive how Heyward has been able to pick himself up from his abysmal season and start playing well. Wish Fultz would have got some tips from him

 
i have only watched a couple of Celtic's games in the past month or 2, but anyone who thinks the team is better without Kyrie is literally insane. 

 
Steve Ballmer is good shtick. Seriously. After reading about Robert Sarver and Howard Schultz sitting courtside, scowling and yelling at players for missing shots, it is nice to see an owner show genuine excitement and enthusiasm for his team's success.

I knew where this article was going before I clicked it. I love Boston sports (aside from the Pats), grew up in the area and with the teams. Much as I hate to say it, there's a not-so-subtle racial undertone to the city that most people there don't want to discuss. It doesn't help you have popular sites like Barstool keeping the city in the headlines with their antics.

As a huge Pacers fan- I love this. With that said- trying to be objective- I think Doc Rivers gets my vote. That team just competes so hard. I love the Zubac pickup for them. Lakers were fools for letting him go for basically nothing.

I would have been very happy to have, as i suggested at the time, swung Kyrie to the Knicks for DSJ after they got him. Of course you're right that the Celts are better with him, but that's mostly because they only have combo guards otherwise. I'd be happier if they had any other competent guard who likes having the ball up top.

I've already taken heat for saying that Kyrie may, right now, be a better point guard than Curry. He's competitive, tho inferior, from all the spots on the floor, but only Kobe finished better and watching him experiment with passing this year - this is really the first season he's paid attention to it - has been as much a revelation as seeing the spins & angles he gets off backboards on his drives. Two years of watching him and i'm convinced there's nothing he can't do if he puts his mind to it.

But he's wrong for this team. The Stevens system makes winning, fun-to-watch basketball, but the key is getting people to buy in. The coach has made successful teams with guys like Evan Turner, Jae Crowder, Kelly Olynyk, plenty other players who are functionally useless elsewhere, even ball-dominant guys like the Leprechaun. The idea was that the Jerseypix and the signings would upgrade the talent so that the system could be played on a higher level.

But the system gotta be played. At times, Kyrie buys in and buys in beautifully. He'll scramble, switch and side-to-side and his passing gets so good that sometimes his teammates arent ready because they can't believe he got it to them. But he does it at his pleasure, which caves in the whole thing. The young guys especially - they see him go off-page and wonder why they can't. Then they get called out and see that Kyrie don't cuz Traitor Danny says coach can't harsh Kyrie or he won't re-up. Stevens got rid of Rondo real quick even though he has mad respect for him because he does it for himself and it ruins the flow that wears other teams down.

Even without #LEPRECHARMA, i want the Celtics playing the Stevens Way. Bostonians have just seen Trey Flowers & Trent Brown sign for big $$ out-of-town and don't much care cuz they know BB will make sweet juice outta the next batch of sour lemons. We want the same for the Green, so the call-the-tune talents can go elsewhere.

yeah hey the bucks are having a pretty good season with booty and have improved in the w column by like a million games possibly less but still a lot i think he has an outside shot at it just sayin take that to the bank bromigos

First, I really don't think the Sixers have much of a chance to make the finals.  Unless all 4 guys can be fully healthy for the last 15 games and really get locked into a groove, I would still favor Boston over them and obviously the MIL/TOR no matter what.

I also just think that each year, Golden State's chances of something going wrong (especially injury) increase, so just thinking about the general odds and very significant and specific improvements from other teams make me thing that the gap is narrower.  

Obviously GSW is still the favorite and actually when I look at the odds for this year, I see that GSW is a heavier favorite than last year at this time, so maybe it is true that it will end up being less interesting than in previous years.  It's certainly true that none of the other challengers is really proven in any way (with the exception of maybe Houston, though the personnel is fairly different).  I do think that the specific matchups and wing capabilities of TOR/MIL/BOS would make for a much more compelling series.

MIL/TOR and maybe BOS would all be a more difficult Finals match up than CLE was last season.  However, the Rockets kept the GSW odds down a bit last year compared to this year.  There's no team in the west nearly as good as Houston last year.

Except for Houston this year. That team is on an absolute tear over the last couple months, similar to what they were last season.

Boston has the ability to beat anybody on any given night and Milwaukee is something nobody has ever seen before.

The Rockets were significantly better last season.  The energy Harden has used can't help when it matters most (and he's had problems in that area before), Chris Paul's advanced stats have really, really dropped from last year, the wing defense on the roster just isn't as good, the bench (even if it's rarely used) just isn't the same, and Houston won't have home court this time around.  The Rockets had a legit shot last season.  This year it's just a puncher's chance IMO.

somehow, the rockets current odds to win the west are actually better than this time last year (-400 on 3/1/18 and 7/2 now).  i guess they are trying to cash in on people excited by their recent tear.  GSW about the same to win the west this year vs last year.

 
IT out of the rotation in Denver, OUCH

Love the kids heart and grit but he needs a perfect fit type situation to make an impact. A "microwave" bench scoring punch role seems like it should work but doesn't appear to be the case :shrug:

IT could work, but not so much in Denver.  That team has great depth, plenty of scoring punch, and is best on offense when the ball is being moved.  That's not IT's sweet spot.  He would be solid for a team like the Hornets or Heat and a perfect fit with the current Magic squad.

One of many significant personnel mistakes made by Magic & Pelinka.  One of the worst parts of this season as a Laker fan is how angry I am at Magic, who is my all-time favorite athlete by far.  But he has been very bad at his job this season since signing Lebron and I am not optimistic that he'll be humble enough to learn from his mistakes.  I think he'll fire Luke and possibly Pelinka and figure he's fixed the problems, when the reality is he has been as culpable as anyone for this season's failure.  He hasn't been getting a raked over the coals by the media, but if he whiffs on getting a second true max player in the off-season, he should get a lot more criticism for his poor job performance.

The IT problem, beyond not moving the ball, is more glaring on defense. Nuggets d has made massive improvements but when one cog in the system breaks down they get really exposed. IT is way too small to help - it's a pick and roll league and every offense is eating him alive during his time on court - and there is no way to hide him.

Last night in Houston without Durant and not playing very well (and not getting many 50/50 calls) seems like a worst care scenario for the Warriors...and they still won.  I just don't see the Rockets forcing a real gut check like they did last season.

BTW - Chris Paul fouls a lot.  That dude hacks on defense and pushes off on O because he can't get by his defender as well now.

Agreed.  Didn't even mention the defense (because everyone seems to agree there), but your post is spot on.

I see a positive in this in that the Nuggets should be able to trade him in the off-season and get something in return. They are so deep across the board I think they will be just fine going forward. I am excited in what Porter may bring to this team.
