2018 College Football Thread: Local man buys some teenage champions a 4 for 4 (2 Viewers)

My daughter who is an athlete just said to me..

"Dad...if an NFL team was allowed to draft the best players year after year to build a roster they would be expected to do what Bama is doing right now and any less would be a failure"

Then I thought Bama is doing what you are supposed to do with the best talent...win!
It's why I think the Belichick = Saban talk is laughable. How good would New England be if they got 5 first round picks every year?

Well, the Browns have had 26 first round picks in the last 20 drafts, so there's that.

This year is probably Bama’s best recruiting class too. I have to admit as a major fan of the game, it’s taking some of the fun out of it.

I agree.  It's apples and oranges.  But I want to be clear, Saban is the best at what he does, and that's college football.  He wins and dominates recruiting.  That's how he does it.  I'd argue he's excellent at development.  IMO his strategic decisions are the one weakness.  Just looking at odds of scoring on the kick 6 play vs Auburn I'd say the odds were better of a return like happened when added to the real shot of a block and return vs that freshman kicker hitting a 57 yard FG.  This is a 18-19 year old kid, not Justin Tucker.  But that's a minor, nitpicking thing.  He's the GOAT in college football.  That doesn't make him even an above average NFL coach.  It's just two totally different jobs.

Teach her how much you have to commit to recruiting...which is why many coaches don’t like college.  It’s a 24/7/52 effort (for the great ones).

I have a UGA grad friend who also works in the collegiate sports industry who feels the same way.  We talked a month or so ago and he was like, Alabama is ruining college football.  He wasn't even that excited for what Kirby Smart was doing at UGA.  I think he's being too pessimistic but there is definitely that sentiment out there and I understand it.

She knows..she played D-1 college volleyball.  Both my daughters did.

The difference is in non revenue sports like volleyball once a kid commits the unwritten rule is other coaches stop and don`t try to flip players. Then you are talking the Michigan VB coach makes around 150K a year..not 2-5 million.

No doubt. Best at what he does. Maybe best all-time at what he does.

The playing field has never been level...but Bama has built a recruiting machine of the best players.  I wish Michigan was the same.

Knee is literally six inches off the ground, that’s a reviewable play, and this idiot blows a whistle

Strange, Tennessee has all the advantages Bama does but recruiting and results don’t just magically happen there?
