It seems so long ago now, but I remember when Jan 1 was the pinnacle of college football, and one of the greatest sporting days of the year.  Hungover, Keith Jackson and Brent Musberger, and 4 or 5 huge bowl games that mattered.  

I gave your post a like but then started thinking about it and now I'm somewhat torn.  Why exactly did those bowls "matter" and the ones today don't?  Seems to me it has more to do with a shift in mindset that only the winner of the NC matters.  The bowls are mostly the same as they've always been and I feel the playoff has added and not taken away to the overall game - the only slight quibble I have is that nobody cares about winning the two semifinal bowls, they care about winning the semifinal.  I don't think if Clemson loses to Bama that Clemson folks will be talking about the big Cotton Bowl win.

Sales of the championship game are soft.  Not sure who had the bright idea of playing it in SanFran on a Monday.  Doesn't help that next year Bama will get to play in New Orleans for the game.  Probably some will just wait on that.

It's funny and true.

At least a few Tide fans will pass on going to SF this year to go next. Or because they've gone recently. Clemson too. 

It helped last year that if they really wanted, fans could drive home after the game. Most didn't hopefully but it was an option. SF will cost more even when the tickets are more than $1,000 less.

They’re also jacking up flight prices. Flights from Greenville to SF were added for $1500.

Anyone else around here along for what was maybe the craziest cover in my long and expensive gambling career? 

For those unaware and not on twitter at the time: line was generally OSU favored in the -5.5 to -6.5 range. Last Washington TD with under a minute to play got them within 5, but then OSU picked the two point conversion attempt and started running it back.  I was curled in the fetal position on the couch when the OSU DB finally went down short of the goal line.

This all happened around the same time as the Bevo-UGA scrap. I'd put it up there with the end of the 2006 Rose Bowl for the best 15 minutes in college football history.
