2018 College Football Thread: Local man buys some teenage champions a 4 for 4 (1 Viewer)

If you look at Petrino's history, he hasn't been at one place very long and when he leaves he usually leaves a team that's on a downturn.  He doesn't recruit well so that foundation for long term success isn't being built.

Can you make it work without taking a home game from Gainesville and Athens every other year?  That's a big hurdle.

Also an important aspect overlooked when discussing the playoffs: Alabama has benefited a few times by not only the additional cupcake above but also no conference title game. 

Alabama is awesome as is, but add in two fewer games of wear and tear to most of their competition an no kidding they look more fresh in the playoffs.

The geographical divison model is stupid. There have to be splits out that fix all vested interests like that. I have seen some that float a 4 division concept.

Maybe some way to make that work...UF/UGA aren't giving up the Jax game though, or their in-state OOC rival.

Hell, who are they stopping in a potential Breastfeeder Bowl matchup?

I hope Oklahoma and Ohio State get matched up in a bowl game this year. Haskins would light up their defense. And the OSU defense is in such shambles, both teams could score 70+. 

 
There’s a huge Zach Smith and Tom Herman twitter meltdown occurring. Smith accusing Herman of infidelity and who all knows what else.

Finding it hard to buy this notion that Bobby Petrino was successful until this year. Entering 2018 he was 1-11 against teams that finished ranked (and that record will be something like 1-15 after this season). Also: 17-9 with Lamar Jackson doesn't seem like an accomplishment.

 
The early pages in this thread are a lot of fun to go back and read through...  you get some incredible gems about how Courtney Smith is setting up poor Zach. 

“I honestly don't know if they are real or not. But again, Courtney has filed NINE police complaints and the police have investigated them all. If the police were never given those text messages, then why the hell didn't she give the texts to the police. Or the police did get them, and they were part of the investigations that concluded insufficient evidence. 

But yeah, in the court of public opinion, aren't those texts great for making Zach look guilty?!? “

Yeah, I have a really hard time believing other black players overlooked a white coach calling one of their teammates the N word.  

That whole 'article' was suspect.  I am not familiar with McMurphy or at least wasn't until August, but his writing borders on unethical journalism.  It's dishonest.  Does he work for a newspaper?  I can't imagine an editor worth his weight in salt would permit this sort of underhanded journalism for a newspaper.

Oh, I don't disagree and think Zach Smith is a garbage human being (I don't think much of Meyer either).  But his latest story is full of questionable details and it just reads like another hit piece.  

This is a pretty good read on why the article is bad journalism.

He essentially has one source:  LeBron Grimes, who is a convicted felon and according to both Trevor and Leah Grimes has little to no involvement in his son's life. 

And yet, McMurphy puts an enormous amount of weight on this 'source' for his story.  It's flimsy.

Dude, didn’t you hear?  This McMurphy guy is willing to risk his entire reputation, career, and livelihood because of that dastardly Urban Meyer. Urban just got too good and too smarmy, so we all had to bring him back down a notch or two. Luckily Brett was willing to ruin years of hard work to make sure his happened.

Like the player in question, who is now at UF, his mother has dismissed McMurphy and the university of Florida has asked McMurphy to leave Grimes and his mother alone. 

As far as I know, Grimes has not made a public comment but he has “liked” tweets that call the latest article bs.

Multiple players, most of them African American, have come out and said that they were present with the altercation and have stated that there was not any racial slurs being used.

McMurphys primary source is Grimes father, that is not part of the young mans life and apparently has not been for years as he was in prison. 

There’s more but that’s more than enough to cover “it appears”. 

 
So is the accusation that Meyer helped this kid and his mom commit "fraud" so he didn't have to sit out a year? WGAF

I asked earlier which paper McMurphy writes for.  From what I can gather, he doesn't.  He writes for something called WatchStadium.  Is that some bastion of journalistic import?  I've never heard of it.  :shrug:

Urban Meyer said Ohio State is "certainly looking into legal action" against reporter Brett McMurphy of WatchStadium, per Eleven Warriors's Dan Hope.

Meyer and the University were the subject of a lengthy report released by McMurphy Tuesday morning that detailed an alleged incident where former Ohio State wide receivers coach Zach Smith called Florida receiver Trevon Grimes, a former Buckeye, the n-word during practice last September.

McMurphy details Grimes's transfer to Florida, one that his father claims was prompted by Smith calling the then-freshman wide receiver a "b---- ### n-----" before an altercation between the two at practice.

Several current members of Ohio State's football team say they saw the exchange between Smith and Trevon Grimes and dispute the claim that the n-word was ever used by the since-fired coach. Ohio State president Michael Drake also issued a statement in response to McMurphy's story, saying the school "unequivocally and vehemently disputes the unfounded allegations."

"The university told McMurphy that we have found no evidence to support these allegations," Drake added. "Reporting in this manner is irresponsible, inflammatory and a severe invasion of privacy of a student athlete and his family as well as a baseless attack on Coach Meyer."

He was at ESPN forever til they gutted their reporting in favor of talking heads. He’s also been on the audible with Stewart Mandel and Bruce Feldman of The Athletic and Fox Sports. Whether or not you believe him is up to you, but he’s as entrenched as any national college football reporter in the last 15 years. 

 
Also LOL at Ohio State bringing action against McMurphy. No way they do that because it opens them up to having to testify on these stories.  Their internal investigation from the first series of reports already showed there were huge issues with the program.

Okay, but I'm curious what kind of editors he has currently because I'm not alone in thinking this story is pretty flimsy.  I can't imagine an editor at a major paper or website greenlighting this one.  

You guys really think Zach Smith called a black player a b!tch ### N word and not one other black player was bothered by it?  Find that incredibly hard to believe, especially when you consider the ONLY source being used here. 

 
I'm more interested in why he felt the need to throw Grimes' mother under the bus. What does her criminal history have to do with the transfer?

I don’t know either way but I know that I had never heard of Zach Smith until the Brett McMurphy story and that his reporting has directly led to Urban deleting a whole bunch of texts, getting suspended, having a huge inquiry into the entire program, and Zach Smith going unhinged in Twitter.  

If you’re asking me if the guy that went to an 11/10 on the crazy scale the past couple of months is capable of dropping an N bomb, yeah I think that’s well within the range of possibilities.  If the report is wrong, it’s wrong and Murphy’s credibility will take a huge hit and he’ll need to answer for that.

Journalistic standards have been vacated, like USC's national championship.

He doesn't have it out for Ohio State or Smith. He has it out for Urban Meyer. 

It was after Urban Meyer said "who would make up a story like that", referring to McMurphy's first article about Zach Smith (that included the accusation that Smith had been arrested in 2015) that McMurphy now had it out of Urban on a personal level. He changed his Twitter header to Urban's "who would make up a story like that" quote and on numerous interviews he would make that Urban quote and respond to it by saying "well... I would... because it's true", despite having edited out all the stuff that wasn't true (but not citing at all that he edited the article after Urban's comment). It was obvious that Urban's comment hit a nerve with him, and he wasn't going to just let it go.  

Urban shouldn't have ever said that, despite McMurphy's article having the facts wrong. Urban handled it wrong, and that's why he got his suspension (the other reason being he should have fired Smith sooner). But Urban handling McMurphy's factually flawed story wrong doesn't justify what McMurphy has done since, which if anyone is being intellectually honest (which means putting aside the joy that he is attacking Meyer) they can easily see his stories ever since B1G media days that have gone after Meyer are suspect, highly questionable, and lack integrity as a journalist. They are clearly a personal vendetta, and not journalistic reporting. This latest story just being another example.

There is approximately a 0% chance that Urban Meyer sues Brett McMurphy. 

That's not a defense of this latest article. Just a reality check on Urban suing him.

 
I was wrong last week when I said there is nothing worse than conference honk and strength of schedule talk. You guys can stop proving me wrong now.
