It would be great if all of these pre-announced deals were incorrect.
Agreed. I roll my eyes every time the analysts start harping on about this. Was listening to some media folks going on about Cousin's contract being fully guaranteed.
It really is not that big of a deal. It's only a three year contract. Every 1st round rookie's first three years of their contracts are guaranteed at least for skill and injury. Don't have a list but this isn't the first time all or the bulk of the first three years were guaranteed for someone. A quick google pulls up RB Chris Johnson way back in 2011 as having $30m of the $31m he made in his first three seasons fully guaranteed.
If it was a 6 or 7 year deal that was fully guaranteed, that would be newsworthy. Hopefully the NFL never goes that route. While it would be fantastic for the players, it would suck for the fans. I'd much rather see the players and NFL make sure the handling of injury settlements is appropriate, and stay away from full guarantees.
Yeah, it seems silly. All this deal does it take the option away from the team after that 3rd year where they would have just cut the guy if he sucked or kept him if he was good.Agreed. I roll my eyes every time the analysts start harping on about this.
Didn't Luck get $87 million guaranteed in his last deal?
Not aware of any limit on how many times a player can be tagged, including after a quick skim of that part of the CBA. Washington could have tagged him again.Yeah, it seems silly. All this deal does it take the option away from the team after that 3rd year where they would have just cut the guy if he sucked or kept him if he was good.
Question is, since Cousins has been franchises twice, does that factor into whether or not he can be franchised after three years in Minnesota? Not sure how that works.
This is what I've wondered. Especially with the trades once they're announced. What's stopping another team from jumping in and offering more? I guess there's an honor system once the deal is agreed upon and I'd like to think every team in the process of trading a player has contacted every GM in the NFL to see if they're interested and what their max offer would be.So what's the point of the legal tampering period again? Seems like deals were flyin around so quickly that there doesnt even seem to be a need fo rit.
And I am waiting for some of these deals to fall through when other teams jump in and pay more.
If it is a legal tampering period then the league doesn't have to deal with the bad press of investigating when a team complains that a player signed a fully fleshed out contract one minute after free agency opens. So what's the point of the legal tampering period again? I recall this going down with Gore who had committed to Philly and I think Sanders who had committed to KC. Both of course several years ago. Am I missing this happening frequently? And I am waiting for some of these deals to fall through when other teams jump in and pay more.
When Brees went to NOS they tried to tag him as though SDC had not yet tagged him and lost the resulting grievance. From that the precedent has been set that the FT is a cumulative career thing and not a consecutive per-team thing. Not necessarily "limit", but will his previous tags affect future tags on a new team with a new contract?
Why not just give them, like, as soon as the super bowl ends.If it is a legal tampering period then the league doesn't have to deal with the bad press of investigating when a team complains that a player signed a fully fleshed out contract one minute after free agency opens.
Everyone knows the agents were going to talk to the other teams before free agency starts, so now they give them a couple of legal days in which to do it.
I'm really hoping the cowboys stay just the way they are.Steelers and Cowboys only 2 teams that haven't signed anyone new. ?

If you ran a team, you would want a chance to look at tape and figure out what you are going to do before starting negotiating. Why not just give them, like, as soon as the super bowl ends.
Every team would be in the same boat, and you can't sign anyone till mid March anyway. If you ran a team, you would want a chance to look at tape and figure out what you are going to do before starting negotiating.
I'm sure he'd love to be a 300-carry back for the Patriots, but what he was eyeing is dollar bills. I agree that it's a very reasonable contract - but CLEARLY no other team offered it. So, sign there and hope for the best; if they get Barkley, "well, nevermind, I got mine."Very easy...especially if you understand pro athletes...they do not get to where they are by wanting to sit on the bench...do you disagree with that? Now, I fully agree that $ is the top priority and if Cleveland was head and shoulders offering more I fully get it but it does not appear this contract is anything over-the-top that could not be received from another team in the current climate...if Cleveland does bring in Barkley than Hyde is looking at 3 years of not seeing the field...sorry but I don't think that is something he was eying in unrestricted free agency...
Just awful.Mike Jones @ByMikeJones
Source says RB Frank Gore and Detroit Lions close to reaching an agreement. Five-time Pro Bowler rushed for 961 yards (3.7 ypc) w three TDs for Colts last year. Will be 35 in May.
Even if it's a dirt cheap contract, I don't see how that is going to help their horrible running game.Just awful.
True, but it's still ok to hate the Cowboys.Your team has the best dline in the NFL since '85, the best QB in the game....and Carson Wentz, one of the best receiving corps going, super duper DBs, the best RBs and the best HC since Vince Lombardi.
No other team in the entire league should concern you for at least 3 yrs
Can probably say that about a lot of FA - Tyler Eifert, Darkwa, Jeremy Hill, etc. I guess they're just not as highly coveted as others that signed earlier.Man, the NFL really doesn't think much of Terrelle Pryor, huh?
second wave guys - Eifert would likely be a first wave guy if he didn't have health concerns but guys like Darkwa, Hill and Pryor are not difference makers so teams can wait them out.Can probably say that about a lot of FA - Tyler Eifert, Darkwa, Jeremy Hill, etc. I guess they're just not as highly coveted as others that signed earlier.
Based on that logic, I guess guys like Ryan Grant and Paul Richardson are difference makers.second wave guys - Eifert would likely be a first wave guy if he didn't have health concerns but guys like Darkwa, Hill and Pryor are not difference makers so teams can wait them out.
I think Richardson could be - you got me on Grant though.Based on that logic, I guess guys like Ryan Grant and Paul Richardson are difference makers.I guess beauty is in the eye of the over-payer.
There are now 3 categories...first wave, second wave and the over pay wave...Based on that logic, I guess guys like Ryan Grant and Paul Richardson are difference makers.I guess beauty is in the eye of the over-payer.
Gore is a pro’s pro. Will be a great one year mentor to the rookie they bring in. I’m cool with it.zamboni said:Even if it's a dirt cheap contract, I don't see how that is going to help their horrible running game.
Why not take a chance on a younger FA option out there with potential upside, like Darkwa or Jeremy Hill?
I can not believe I am saying this but as of Thursday 3/15 there could not be a better opportunity for him...I am sure they will add more but if any semblance of the good Doug Martin shows up in Oakland there may actually be some value here...Doug Martin to the Raiders
Adding Doug Martin to the list..Blick said:Looking at all the movement over the last couple days, I'm having a hard time finding many fantasy relevant players that have had their stock increase substantially. Here's my short list.
The rest are meh at best. Anyone I'm missing?
- Trey Burton (CHI) - From backup to starter on a team that should have plenty of targets for a good pass catcher.
- Jerick McKinnon (SF) - PPR gold (Bump Dalvin Cook as well)
- Dion Lewis (TEN) - Should have a more defined pass catching role
I think it depends an awful lot on whether Lynch stays or not. They say that he'll be around.... but at his current contract of $6mil or at a reduced rate now that it's more or less a 4-back-rbbc now. If Martin looks good all summer(and he usually does) does that make Lynch expendable in September? That's assuming there isn't a guy in the draft that falls into their lap. There are a lot of talented big backs in this draft.I can not believe I am saying this but as of Thursday 3/15 there could not be a better opportunity for him...I am sure they will add more but if any semblance of the good Doug Martin shows up in Oakland there may actually be some value here...
They didn't think really think much of him last year at this time either. I was shocked at the deal he signed with WAS.massraider said:Man, the NFL really doesn't think much of Terrelle Pryor, huh?
The fear to me is the draft...a good young back could make him obsolete real quickly...I think there will be opportunity if Lynch is there but a higher-end rookie would hurt...that being said expectations are real low and right now this simply gives him a pulse compared to a lot of other landing spots...I think it depends an awful lot on whether Lynch stays or not. I was to but it now makes much more sense...They didn't think really think much of him last year at this time either. I was shocked at the deal he signed with WAS.
He turned down the deal Britt got from Cleveland to bet on himself and most people I know and respect were critical of Cleveland for letting him go and thought WAS got a steal. Easy to say it was a bad deal now, don't know anyone saying that last year. They didn't think really think much of him last year at this time either. I was shocked at the deal he signed with WAS.
That ankle is going to cost him millions.Ryan Grant failed his physical and deal is off. Saved from themselves.
I think the Ravens caught a lucky break there as they had no business offering him that contract to begin with. Now they get a free do over. That ankle is going to cost him millions.
Or they did him dirty. Either way, you have to wonder if this will correlate with a Crabtree signing.I think the Ravens caught a lucky break there as they had no business offering him that contract to begin with. Now they get a free do over.
