2018 NHL Offseason Thread: E.Karlsson is a Shark! (1 Viewer)

Was looking for Skinner trade news and hit Skinner wife by accident.  Didn't know he was married.  He chose well.

So Zadina had same host family as Nico Hischier. I wonder if that host family will be in demand next season.

@charlieo_conn: If @billmeltzer is right and Dallas is targeting Veleno with No. 13, Joel Farabee and Ty Smith would top my board for the Flyers at 14.

Very odd seeing the Flyers take 2 smallish skilled American forwards who are playing in college  next year.

@JaxBill10: Is that a positive or negative? RT @SWhyno: #Pens coach Mike Sullivan says his relationship with Phil Kessel “is as good as it’s ever been.”

If the Rangers can nab the German kid at 28, it will make not taking Whalstrom a little easier to deal with

O'Brien really moved up the board. Seems a lot of teams were interested, when he was considered a fringe first-rounder not too long ago.

Whalstrom will score 900 goals against the Rangers while we wait for the Russian kid to maybe leave the KHL. Splendid.

TRADE | The Washington Capitals have acquired a second round pick, 47th-overall from the Colorado Avalanche in the 2018 NHL Draft in exchange for defenseman Brooks Orpik and Philipp Grubauer
Avalanche will trade or buy out orpik.  They had cap space to spare a big question mark at goalie.  Grubauer wont be playing behind an aging and injury prone varlamov for very long.  I love this.

And of course, for all of the rumors that were swirling, pretty much nothing happens tonight. My guy was adamant the Bruins were making a trade even before the draft began.

I'm going to go light myself on fire now. :bag:

Canes offered a better deal but Caps wanted Grubauer out of the East.

Just wanted to publicly thank Cav for sending me a Francis Carolina Jersey.  He posted last month about getting rid of some older stuff he had.  My son is a huge fan.  The Jersey arrived today and He graduates from high school tonight, so I'll be able to give it to him after the ceremony.  Thanks a lot!  You're a good man and will make my son pretty happy tonight!
Gave him the Jersey when we got home.  He was so excited.  Texted all his buddies and said he just got the greatest graduation gift ever!  He's meeting up with them tonight and is wearing his jersey.

I think he had the biggest smile I've ever seen on him.

Thanks a ton!  You really made his night!

I have to say that after past debacles like the Forsberg trade and missteps like losing Nate Schmidt to Vegas, the Caps seem to be making a lot of smart moves. Sounds like maybe they could have gotten a first for Grubauer, but by accepting a second to also unload Orpik’s $5.5M contract, they now have cap space to keep Carlson and hopefully Kempney as well. Even some talk of bringing Orpik back on the cheap if the Avs buy him out but I’d pass. He helped change the culture and win a Cup, but he’s 37 and doesn’t have much left. Time to keep moving forward

I was talking more about change in philosophy for a franchise that for decades would take a large physical Canadian forward with solid floor and limited upside.

Now they're BPA swing for the fences. Drafting 18 year olds is such a crap shoot.  They go for high ceiling guys that are late risers and don't have any character questions. They also don't care if the pick is playing in college ir overseas the following year.

But you're absolutely right about O'Brien.

@billmeltzer: Supposedly, NYR, Minnesota and Boston (who would have to trade up) all had thoughts on stepping up on O'Brien.  If even one is true, Flyers couldn't have waited. They had to take him at 19th and saw BPA upside. I thought they'd go D, but I love gutsy picks backed by homework.

And don’t forget, “...he’s one of the hardest working players in the draft.” Pretty sure that’s been said about every Hextall draftee.

Hamilton, Ferland, and Fox to Carolina for Hanifin and Lindholm
