2018 NHL Thread: Cappy is happy while the rest of us pray to the ping pong gods for Tuesday night (1 Viewer)

Guy has to go...

That is also probably understating just how bad it was, and it resulted in coach Randy Carlyle getting asked if he is worried about his job security. According to Mike Coppinger of the Los Angeles Times, Caryle responded by calling it a “dumb question” and abruptly ending his press conference.

Enjoy my hometown! Like others, I think it's well done with a lot of great history and interactive things to do. I remember when it was located in Exhibition Stadium, but it is now housed in a former Bank of Montreal building -- an actually fairly historic facade in terms of building in that area of downtown TO -- but agree the entrance was a little weird. I guess they thought the original bank entrance wasn't big enough to handle traffic or ticketing? Either way, a great feature is the trophy room, which is in the main hall of the old bank and I believe they store the original cup in the old bank vault.

I also hope you find the time to watch the Bruins/Leafs game - city should be pretty pumped for it. Bruins has been the Buds' modern nemesis, and will be fantastic to shake the mental edge the Bruins seem to always have on us with a solid -- and more importantly, a gritty physical -- W.
Oh I have tickets to Bruins-Leafs! Enjoying Kensington today, ate at Gretzky's last night and caught the late show at Second City, which was phenomenal!

Nikita Kucherov has 75 points in 45 games. Last time a player had at least 75 points through 45 games: mario lemieux with 79 back in 1997.

🙂🙂

This is who they are. They play when they want to play. Look great against Winnipeg. Lay a turd against Arizona and Detroit. Zero effort. No accountability. This team needs to be blown to kingdom come. Unfortunately, contracts make most of their pigs unmovable, and no one will give anything of value for any of the other pigs. They're going to stink for a long, long time. GM won't/can't do anything. Owner is too involved and thought this team only needed "tweaks." They're a steaming pile. They are who we thought they were!

Actually, the problem is, they’re not bad enough. They’re stuck in the no man’s land where you’re good enough to hang around a playoff spot but not bad enough to be able to draft a stud.

I would like to see Carolina make the playoffs. 4 pts back of Montreal and 3 back of Buffalo with a game on MTL.

Plus, they're just a better team than the Habs IMO.

Habs are all smoke and mirrors.  Not sure how they are where they are. They should be tanking, instead they are working their asses off and will finish in no-man's land just out of the playoffs.

I genuinely hate many/most? Toronto Maple Leafs fans.

Booing Gardiner tonight, all the hate for Nylander, there are large segments of this fanbase who don't like Auston ####### Matthews and Frederick Andersen (both 'too soft'). It's so pathetic.

And also yes, all the players they don't like are not Canadian and no it isn't a coincidence.

If the Wild lose their third straight tomorrow against bottom feeders it’s time to move some guys for young players and picks. I know, groundbreaking analysis.

I didn't know Jake wasn't Canadian. :bag:   He's a stand-up guy.  Took it on the chin last year when he was -5 or whatever and again last night.  Meets the media, answers the (mostly stupid) questions honestly even though it must be killing him.  Certainly have to respect the dude. He'd be the Habs #2 d-man.  Maybe Toronto would prefer Benn? :)

Silver lining of the recent snowstorm: was able to take my kids to their first ever hockey game last night, because Caps tickets were affordable for the first time in a decade. They were super into it, so I will apparently be lurking here even more often than I already do for insights to share with them.

Their favorite parts:

6 year old was able to understand offsides rule, loved watching the players wait for the puck to cross before entering the zone while the other players tried to get it back out.

5 year old was super into the penalty box/power play concept. "They have to go in time outs!"

3 year old: ZAMBONI!  Not a fan of the goal horn

Playing hockey in Toronto is like playing for the Yankees in the Bronx (or for the Rangers in midtown, for that matter) -- in a huge media market that has been a historic center of the sport, you are going to be under a microscope constantly. Add this to the fact that the Buds haven't won a Cup since '67, and the fact that we seem to have the best team we've had in decades, if not since those late 60s team, I am not surprised at the boos @ Gardiner. He is a stand-up guy, a solid defenseman, and largely doesn't deserve any derision.

But last night, with the team on a slump (8 wins in last 17?), with the team's work ethic in question, and with Gards blowing coverage on a shorthanded goal and getting benched, I am surprised that people are surprised to hear boos.

Is Jake the only guy who deserves it? Hardly. But he had a particularly bad game amidst a team of guys not playing up to standard, and the frustration of not playing like the Cup contender they are (by standings, anyway) is that much more frustrating for a fanbase who feel long overdue and who see an extraordinarily talented team play far below their capability over the last few weeks.

We simply expect more.

Steve "Dangle" Glynn really encapsulates that frustration and expectation pretty well from our last game:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=6&v=eNB7hwEN0GM

So when things go south, and a player like Gards plays far below expectation, the players will hear about it -- from fans and the media.

That said, Leafs fans are really not booers like they are in the Bronx.

No, unlike the Yankees fans, Leafs fans act like entitled babies, despite not having won a ####### thing in 50 years.

  Lemme guess, Senator or Hab fan?

Hey, I can be as vocally self-critical as the next Canuck. I get why the Leafs -- and by extension their fans -- rub fans of other Canadian teams the wrong way. Roch Carrier's enduring book is testament to how deep the hatred of the Leafs is for, say, fans in Montreal or Western Canada. Same way the Leafs fanbase is when Canadiens fans become vocally proud about the number of cups the team has won (they are truly the best dynastic team the country and the sport have).

But that's towards the team, not really their fans. And as far as Leafs fan go:

1) You said it yourself (bolded above). We haven't won anything from long before I was born. Kinda hard to say we're entitled when we've won squat all and have been putrid far more often than decent (let alone good).

2) We aren't exactly known for booing our own players. And when we do, there is always a look-up moment saying we're better than that. You see that in the vid I posted, or even in the press -- we're shamed ourselves by the behavior.

I don't think I've ever seen a Yankee fan or Rangers fan regret booing their team. And I lived in NYC for a decade, so I know that's a fact.

Hate away, my friend. Maybe I'm blind to it, but just don't see how we're any more entitled than any other original 6 team's fanbase is, and I think each and every one of us knows we really have nothing to crow about until we get back to the big show.

Huh? I'm a Leafs fan.

The comparison to Yankees fans is beyond awful. They have chants for their players, they cheer loudly often. The problem with Leafs fans is there hasn't been so much as a "Go Leafs Go" audible on TV for 20 years. In the arena, you may get one in the 300-level but it never gets far or lasts long. THAT's the difference between Leafs fans and Original 6 Habs, Rangers, Bruins, Blackhawks fans. Those buildings are all LOUD. Their fans CHEER. Leafs fans can't ever get off their hands to clap or cheer but will turn on their own players the first chance they get.

Well, I applaud you as well as a vocally self-critical fan and for calling out the fans for booing Gards as beneath us, and not recognizing all the good he’s done for us (making up for Zeitsev’s indecisiveness alone, let alone what else he brings to the table).

But we’re now talking about an entirely different  issue than your original accusation of us being entitled and whiny.

And I wholeheartedly agree. Leafs fans at home are quiet by comparison to other clubs. Way too quiet. Not exactly maximizing home ice opportunity.

But that’s the way it’s always been. Been to games from the late 70s through to last year - we Torontonians are a reserved bunch. Never been to a Raps game but it is the same with the Jays (with the only exception being if Joe Carter is hitting a 3-run dinger to win their second world series).

And you miss my point about the Yankee fan comparison. I can’t think of a wholly different fanbase in terms of how they vocalize feelings, but the passion and history and investment is absolutely the same.

We’re not boo-ers but everyone has a breaking point and can understand why people were booing JG and the rest of the team after an entirely uninspired, unenergetic, and underwhelming effort last night - and similarly not surprised at all to see all the remorse about it either (we’re perpetually sorry about things as you know).

If the Leafs truly want to contend for Lord Stanley’s hardware, they need more urgency and effort all 3 periods.

They might also be served well thinking about a trade acquisition before March 1 as while they have plenty of offense, their D is not at the level that protects leads and wins trophies.

In other news, Montreal gets 52 saves from their backup in a 5 1 win. 😳

Tied with the B's 1 point behind the Gardiners. (Oh sure theyve played 3 more games but still worth pointing out)
