2018 NHL Thread: Cappy is happy while the rest of us pray to the ping pong gods for Tuesday night (2 Viewers)

I'm really curious to see how high Mitch Marner's contract goes. I don't see him as a $10 million player but there has been talk of that. I can see 8 and maybe he lands somewhere in the middle. But it all comes down to the market and comparables, etc... Matthews will set it on the high end, then there is an Laine/Aho/Rantanen/Marner block of RFA's next season. Does Sebastian Aho get $10 Million a season? He has to get more than Marner, right?
Draisatl contract is killing them with Nylander, and I assume it impacts Marner as well.

If Matthews comes in around 8*12, how much realistically can they give out to Nylander and Marner on long-term deals and still keep a decent team together?

Marner put up 69 points last year and will probably beat that this year. Draisatl put up 77 in his contract year. He's a C but spent most of that year playing with McDavid I think.

Nah, got that sweet Vegas money coming in plus Seattle coming in behind that. The system now isn't too bad with the cap and the floor, very competitive league, players getting paid, owners making bills.

Bettman loves lockouts. Players hate escrow. Plus Olympics.

Not NHL, but Boston College and Boston University are a combined 0-7 after the Eagles got taken to the woodshed by St. Cloud State tonight, 7-0.

BC has been shut out three times already, and by the time it faces Bentley in a few weeks it will have been more than two full years since the Eagles' last win against a non-Hockey East team.

Flyers sure playing like a team that wants to get its coach fired. Scorers aren't scoring.  The journeyman vets are playing like journeymen. The kids seem to be regressing if anything. Bad and boring team right now.

So, to recap: The Flyers don’t do a great job of scoring goals. They don’t do a good job of preventing goals. Their team defense is porous, and the goalies behind them don’t really do anything to pick up the slack. Both of their special-teams units are currently bottom-rung, one of them very predictably so. Their opponents tend to be better than them at controlling the puck. And all in all, when they lose, they’re downright non-competitive. In sum, this team is failing basically any sort of high-level evaluation you can examine it by.

Other than that, Mr. Hextall, how do you like their play?

that result shocked me.  SCSU has looked good early but geeze, that's brutal.  BC was supposed to take a decent step this year too.

slightly less shocking than a 5-0 shutout buy Niagara @ Air Force though.

Hockey East going to be in a world of hurt in Pairwise.

In NCHC - Colorado College is 4-1-1 and North Dakota 1-2-1 - still early and (can't believe I'm saying this) - but Sioux need to beat the Gophers in Las Vegas to help NCHC Pairwise and a UMD win over Notre Dame would be really nice.

One of my students from last year just committed to play cawlidge hawkey at Providence. Figure since we were talking college I would add that in

Don't worry ... Cale Makar will carry the load! ?

In all seriousness, that's exactly what happened last year. BC won the regular-season title and had no nonconference wins.

Providence and Northeastern are solid again, and UMass and Maine are considered big sleepers. My Minutemen already split with No. 1 Ohio State on the road last week, and were a couple of minutes away from taking three points.

I will say, though ... seeing BU last in PairWise last night was really bizarre.

I like UMass as a darkhorse tourney bid.

I don't think Northeastern is solid, they lost too much.  They should take a step back.

also, I can't believe OSU started as #1 in the polls.  they should be a top 10 team and make the tourney but giving them #1 is crazy especially when UMD lost hardly anything of a young talented roster with another year of experience and a ship.

I think the preseason poll had UMD at 1 and OSU at 2. Then the Buckeyes moved up when UMD lost and tied against the Gophers in their opening weekend.

I hope you're right about UMass ... young but loaded with talent (Makar, Ferraro, Leonard, and some good-looking freshmen). I've had too much frustration following this program, but they really appear to have turned the corner.

You could be right about NU, but Providence looks like it might be the best team in the league right now.

you're right.  I thought preseason had that too but that was Oct 8th.  Notre Dame is such a fraud, I still can't believe that run they made last year on the back of Cale Morris.

agree on Providence and they were last year too.  they should have made it to Minneapolis.

I don't for this season. I think with the way of the salary cap world, this season while they have Gardiner and eventually Nylander might actually be one of the best shots they get. I think I'd take my chances with the roster on hand and some deadline tweaks before they enter cap hell. I also don't know if you're getting any where near a difference maker or equivalent value. If the Jets want to trade Trouba for him, then sure but more likely you're dealing him for Justin Faulk or someone and that doesn't really do it for me.

Long term, they may be forced into it. The defence is already an issue and I do think Gardiner is a goner after the season now. They'll have to find someone to fill 20+ minutes a night, run the 2nd power play, get them out of the zone. Right now it's pretty bleak beyond Rielly.

Per Dundon end last year of last year, Aho was the only player they wouldn't trade.  Think Staal made 8 to 9 million.  I think Aho will become the highest paid Cane ever.

Seriously though, Cav sent me two beautiful Canes sweaters, one still had the tags.

Gb the FFA, you guys are the best. ??

tuck it, please
I think the one I sent DD I was wearing when I made the front page of the news and observer paper in Raleigh.  There was a thread I started in 2006 saying I made the front page.  The great people of the FFA found it online before I knew it was possible for them to find it.  There was some website that showed front pages of many newspapers. .....long story short, the great FFA people had my image driving a short bus in that thread.  Got to love this place and they were spot on.  And yes, I still got that newspaper.

Avs in a tough one in MN - gave up 2 PP goals - second one was on a real weak call. But Wild just ground them to a halt. Avs on second night of back to back on the road. Still liked the attitude they brought to game - it was an intense affair and Avs have been playing strong for all 60 min lately with playoff intensity throughout.

League should fix it so that in division games aren't part of back to backs. These are important points in Division - Central especially.

Flyers win consecutive games vs ANA/LA  for first time all year which leads to this talk-

@helenenothelen: Flyers take 4-2 lead over the Kings. More turnovers. Could Kings and Ducks both have new coaches by the time they meet next Tuesday?

They both should just shut it down completely for losing to the college coach.

So is Dylan Larkin a superstar now, or...?  Obviously the skating is elite, in the past two seasons he's gone from a minus in the faceoff circle to very good (won the key draw last night to ice the game), he's always been good on the PK, he's physical for a 'star',  draws penalties, can/has to drive a line by himself. Because he plays PK/PP, he's always up over/around 20 minutes a night... I know it's a hot streak of late but I'm super impressed every time I watch him play.

Some of these forwards are playing really heavy minutes early in the season. McDavid with a couple of 25 minute plus games, and Barkov has played over 23 minutes 5 times already. I guess because there are so few games you can do this with younger players, but that will be hard to sustain.

Death, taxes and ....

@charlieo_conn: Per Hextall, Neuvirth was sent back to Philly to be examined by team doctors. His saga continues.

This Blues team is terrible. I’m just not allowed to ever have anything nice.

I try not to fall into the standard ‘fire the coach’ crap fans like to get worked up in but I’m ready for Yeo to go if for no other reason than he can’t help himself to keep running Bouwmeester out there. Jordan Schmaltz deserves better.
