2018 NHL Thread: Cappy is happy while the rest of us pray to the ping pong gods for Tuesday night (3 Viewers)

the Fiala development will be interesting to watch, whichever way it goes.  he'll be given every chance to succeed obviously given the heap of praise Fenton threw at him after the deal as a "game breaker" and since they moved a franchise cornerstone to get him, something Granlund wasn't afforded early in his career with a secondary role behind veteran players.  but man, look at the pressure he is being put under already.  basically anointing him a superstar with his actions and comments.  that's a lot for a young guy with less than 100 career points to handle.  and he has struggled in a prime role already this year when Nashville had injuries and he also struggled in the playoffs last year, another pressure spot.

still blows my mind that you move a 27 year old 70 point player with term on his deal about $2.5MM below his market cap worth straight up for an unproven guy.  of all the people to negotiate with you go to the guy who full well knows how high you value players you helped draft.  and then instead of putting him in a bind since it's he who has the deadline, you give him all the leverage and get played like a fiddle.

Rangers/Caps game Sunday was one of the most entertaining games I've seen all year. Rangers had multiple chances on one possession to win it in OT, completely botched it, and you knew the Caps were going to take it down.

Game had a bit of everything for everyone. I was at a family members house and was watching it in the background on the TV, by OT, most of the males in the house were watching.

Interested to see how Stone's 8x9.5 deal affects all the upcoming RFA's. Stone was going to be a UFA but I think it's all the same in terms of comparison based on the Matthews deal where players are no longer giving a discount based on the first couple years of the deal being bought out being RFA years only.

Do guys like Marner, Aho, Rantanen, Laine, Point, etc... get more than Stone? Rantanen and Point could both hit 100 points, with Marner having an outside chance if he gets back to the pace he was at before the little mini-slump he's been in.  Point and Aho are centres which may get them a premium, but Point likely takes a Tampa discount. Laine has the biggest name value. Marner's agent and father think he should be paid like Matthews. I'm fascinated to see how it all shakes out.

I think for the fact that he's shown he can be a #1 centre with way less around him than the rest of the group and producing at a similar rate, if you give me my choice of the group to give $10 million-plus to, I'm taking Aho first but I don't think it will shake out that way.

@charlieo_conn: Also, Phil Myers is good and shouldn't leave this lineup again for the remainder of the season, thanks.

I. love. Fenton. the. new. Wild. they. are. unstoppable. Jets. can. s. my. d. greatest. trades. ever. playoffs. here. we. come. screw. maximizing. value. get. Rask. healthy. cup. is. ours.

Pairing him with Scandella was setting him up to fail
This goes back to what Burke was saying about he has to be paired with the right guy.   I turned it on to start the 3rd.  And was just watching him.  Same ol, same ol.   Fly into the zone with speed looking good and then quickly turn the puck over for a 2 on 1.  Can't believe he would even try that in his first game down 3-2.

I don’t think tberes any way Point gets more than Stamkos, let alone Kucherov.

Zucker deal to Calgary that fell through was Frolik + a pick.  getting older and slower, just like Fenton said he was trying to do.  :loco:

apparently he just wants to get out of that contract?  looks like he's as good as gone before his no trade kicks in during July.

Fiala showed some flashes last night.  he looks even quicker than I thought, out of control at times though.

Kunin looked good at center, maybe that will work.

Greenway and Ek continue to look better every game.  really happy with the progress there.

what the hell happened to him.  he was always a steady middle pairing guy.
no idea, but he's been really awful all year yet Housley keeps rolling him out there. maddening. Especially since Pilut has been awesome and can't stick for some reason.

Hey, Don't sleep on the Kings tanking ways all year....
New contender is Ducks..

1) They kept a coach that had an 8 game losing streak and a franchise record 12 game streak and only fired him after another 7 game streak due to massive fan revolt the day STH's received renewal notices.

2) Getz hasn't played in last 4 games. Probably made up the injury.

3) The team had it's own D Man run into Gibson during a game, giving him a concussion.  As he appears to be almost healed, yesterday it was reported that they had him take out all four of his wisdom teeth and he will be out longer.  :lmao:

4) Ryan Miller has yet another injury and 4th stringer Kevin Boyle is now the #1 goalie.  5th string goalie Angus Redmond was the back up goalie last game vs VAN.  WTF names their kid Angus?

5) After being a healthy scratch four games, they put Spronger on the #1 line.

Kings are at 8 games  9 games and counting...going for your 12 gamer........plus they just informed all STH that they are holding prices for the next two years if you commit to those years so they already know how crappy they will be playing....it's the long con of tanking.......

The Ducks raised their prices!    Also, I heard we have three games vs Kings still.

that Kovalchuk contract is hilarious.  seems impossible it was signed only 8 months ago.
Blake foolishly thought the Kings were one piece away from contenders...hahaha

It really won't hurt the Kings because they won't be competitive by the time it expires anyway so it shouldn't prevent them from making any critical rebuilding moves.

ETA:  The only thing it really does is take ice time away from younger guys that need to learn the game.  I am not sure how much mentoring Kovi is good for either.  Although he has improved a bit as the year has gone on so maybe there will be a contending team willing to take him on for some picks come summer time or at next year's deadline.

Elliotte Friedmann compared the Wild to the Indians in Major League this morning, with Fenton/ownership doing everything they can do disrupt the team/sabotage the season but Boudreau keeps rallying the team and they keep winning (holding 1st wild card spot right now) :lmao:

every time they dip within 10 points of the bottom they go on a streak.  madness!

Leafs in trouble with Gardiner and Dermott both potentially out long term. Makes the Muzzin acquisition even bigger, at least he can become the #2 LD and play the point on PP2 (basically filling Gardiner's role), but losing two of your top 4 dmen is never good.

The Leafs have had Justin Holl on their NHL roster all season (he has been a healthy scratch 61 of 63 games), he's in the lineup tonight, paired with Martin Marincin who was recalled.

Their best hope as someone who can potentially jump into the top 4 is Calle Rosen, who has 44 points in 52 games in the AHL and apparently has been excellent down there this season. He's also 25 and has lots of pro experience (though most in the Swedish Elite League) but he's hurt right now.

I simed it twice and the Rangers got the number 1 pick. That has to be a sign
I simmed it five times and the Kings came us the first pick 3 times, Rangers once and Red Wings once.....

Got a couple of tickets to the NCAA Northeast regional finals a few days ago. Taking my 12 year old son and we'll be down on the glass next to one of the benches.

Interesting tidbit from Elliotte Friedman 31 thoughts

18. In the days leading up to Carl Hagelin’s trade to Washington, Pittsburgh tried to re-acquire the winger. Before the trade was submitted for Central Registry approval, someone noticed that the Penguins were ineligible to do it. They traded him to Los Angeles on Nov. 28 and retained salary. A team can not bring back any such player for one year after the initial move.
