2019-2020 NHL Season Thread (2 Viewers)

NHL supposedly in talks with players to return with 4 regional hubs. A lot of problems/details to be worked out.

Larry Brooks
The NBA is thinking of something similar, but as stated, a lot of hurdles need to be cleared.

I miss hockey. I just ordered 2 Lightning t-shirts, and got one of them the other day.

7. Once teams are allowed on-ice again, I hope everyone investigates the possibility of televising practices live. People would watch. I don’t know if it would be technologically possible to mic up coaches and players, but this is the time to innovate and entertain.

This doesn't sound good.

@PierreVLeBrun: Among the many possibilities Bill Daly says the NHL has discussed for the draft, one is to hold the draft in June before the potential season resuming. There are some obvious complications with that, draft order and conditional picks, etc, but it’s being discussed as an option
I think the draft in June before play resumes is a dumb idea. That appears to be their direction though. I saw a tweet that Board of Governors confirmed no players can be traded for picks.

Meanwhile slow meandering trudge towards summer hockey...maybe

I get the need for caution. It just appears they can't even cone up with a plan to return to practice let alone play.

What does the league do if fans can’t attend in 2020/21 season? Seems to me like quite a few teams aren’t built to sustain no gate long-term. [gestures to Miami]

Excerpts from Pierre LeBrun in yesterday's Athletic

Before even playing games, the league and NHLPA will soon have to decide when to end self-quarantine and move into Phase 2, which is when players can skate at team facilities in small groups. It’s a situation that both sides are monitoring daily because advancing to the next phase is a delicate decision. When is it safe enough in all 31 markets for Phase 2 to commence?

......

other sources around the league suggest what appears to be some momentum for a 24-team format rather than bring all 31 teams back for regular-season games. Although I’ve had a few team executives also suggest the 20-team format makes sense, too (one suggests 7 vs. 10 and 8 vs. 9 on each side to get to the 16-team playoff).

@DarrenDreger: NHL Board conference call today. The NHLPA was also busy this weekend working on return to play scenarios. Two Hub Cities with 12 teams in each has been discussed and remains one of the possibilities. TBD.

@cotsonika: NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman is about to do a virtual fireside chat with Leaders Week, a sports business conference that was supposed to take place in New York. He will discuss the efforts to safely resume the season.

@cotsonika: Bettman said 17 percent of players are outside North America. There are issues with borders and quarantines.

@cotsonika: Bettman said NHL hasn't tested players, other than those who have been sick.

@cotsonika: Bettman talked about logistics of having a dozen or so teams in one location.

@cotsonika: Bettman said players and fans want to finish this season and award the Stanley Cup, even if that means playing in the summer and delaying start of next season. NHL is committed to an 82-game schedule next season.

Sounds like they're having meetings to get a timeline to have more meetings to come up with a framework of meetings.

And if they're dragging this out througb Summer into Fall, committing to 82 game season next year is dumb. Especially since they might start next season in time for the #secondwave

@THNKenCampbell: Almost nothing of substance came out of the Board of Governors meeting today. The league is still considering a host of options and will not commit to any one of them until absolutely necessary. Those close to the situation maintain the goalposts are still constantly moving.

Is this the kind of year the Rangers can trade a first or two first rounders for some quality. If they do the 24 team playoff, it all but assures them of no high picks.

We need to see what they decide to do for the draft. The GMs want to push it back. Bettman wants to keep in June before the above playoff format were to start.  The draft format that was getting traction was for teams that win the lottery could only move up four spots. If that's the case, then yeah, forget it.  If it's the traditional draft format, then we still have a chance with our pick plus our second first rounder from Carolina. We'll see.

A Rangers guy I know that used to work for the team and still has connections there says that the Rangers do have interest in trading up for a top 10 (or better) player because they feel that this will be their last chance in a while to get a top player.

@SWhyno: Under plan @FriedgeHNIC reported tonight:
EAST
5 PIT-12 MTL winner v 4 PHI
6 CAR-11 NYR winner v 3 WSH
7 NYI-10 FLA winner v 2 TB
8 TOR-9 CBJ winner v 1 BOS
WEST
5 EDM-12 CHI winner v 4 DAL
6 NSH-11 AZ winner v 3 VGK
7 VAN-10 MIN winner 2 COL
8 CGY-9 WPG winner 1 STL https://twitter.com/swhyno/status/1243590289639583744
Terrible idea.  The 24th best team in the NHL should not have ANY chance at winning the Cup in any playoff format, and like Capella said, this will put the teams with byes at a huge disadvantage.

10 teams per conference probably would have been a decent compromise, but look who the 9 and 10 seeds are in each conference. Columbus, Florida, Winnipeg, and Minnesota. Expanding to 12 per conference gets Montreal, the Rangers and Chicago in. Easy choice for the NHL.
Plus 12 teams per conference lets the Flyers sneak into the last bye so Pens fans can ##### and make a Flyers-Pens matchup even spicier.

Yeah I wouldn't expect Carolina or CBJ to get much officiating help. NHL probably would love BOS-TOR , WAS-NYR in round of 16.

I think the Rangers are 34-8 over the past 10 years against Carolina including 4-0 this season. The officiating is the least of their concerns, but this situation is completely like no other, so you have to throw everything out the window.  Who knows how teams will come out of a 3 month bye. We'll probably see lots of upsets.

Personally, I will just be happy seeing hockey again regardless of outcomes.

Always loved pulling the TV out to the deck and watching playoff hockey outdoors once the weather got nice here in Boston. Will be doing a lot of that in August - something to look forward to.

One of each these cities will host. TBD.

West - Chicago, Dallas, Edmonton, LA, LV, VAN. MINN
East -  CLBS, PITT, TOR,

Minn or Chi to host East first round?

No way on LA. Can't see CA approving it.
