2021 Buffalo Bills - Same as it ever was*** (1 Viewer)

It feels like the Bills want Tyrod to be the guy, Cassel is an insurance policy and all Manuel hope is lost.
It's starting to shake out that way. I wouldn't say this was "the plan" a couple months ago. Cassel was the plan, with EJ hopefully beating him out and Tyrod as an X factor backup.

EJ fell apart, Cassel predictably underwhelmed, but Tyrod has shown more than expected.

The clincher will be in game 2. If he plays well, it's his job for sure.

I also think it's promising that the Bills coaching staff didn't force Manuel and Cassel into the starting spot...they are legitimately trying to figure out the best option for winning, without all the political crap that so many other organizations struggle with.

Taylor looked to be a run first QB, and while he made a few nice throws he wasn't all that effective passing the ball (I'm basing this on one preseason game so obviously its a small sample size), but wouldn't making him the starting QB make trading up for Watkins and shelling out big money for Harvin and really big money for Clay poor decisions? You have to be able to throw the ball to some degree in today's game.

One nice thing about both Watkins and Harvin is that they ought to be pretty adaptable to either more traditional, vertical type offenses, or quick-hitting dink-and-dunk affairs. You're not going to maximize either of those guys with a Cassel or Tyrod, but neither will be useless, either. Get this cast of QB stiffs with a Calvin or Julio, and you've wasted a whole lot of money on a type of talent you can't use.

I was at practice yesterday... Tyrod was pretty bad. Any sign of pressure he started to get jittery. Cassel was much better, not amazing, but actually looked like an NFL QB.

I firmly believe that if it is close, the coaching staff wants TT to be the QB. But he has to play well on Thursday and look like an NFL QB, and not get all flustered at the 1st sign of pressure

Polian was just on ESPN and thinks that we only keep Tyrod and EJ and save that 4-5M and dump Cassel.

Can't see that happening.

Curious if they keep 2 or 3 though.

Good point, I see what your saying here. Disagree a bit with Julio as he can do it all but Calvin, AJ Green, Jordy Nelson and other big time WR's yes.

Just watched the Round Up from yesterday. Of the passing highlights shown, 1 was Taylors, 2 were EJ's, and Cassel had 7 or 8. I'm not sure where folks are getting their info that Cassel has done anything but separate himself over the past couple weeks of practices.

What a disaster. McCoy with a significant hamstring injury, Harvin severely hobbled by his hip injury still, and Karlos Williams out at least 2 weeks after having some sort of surgical procedure. And Watkins limited with a tight hamstring as well.

This training staff needs to be fired. Hamstring injuries to LeSean McCoy, Fred Jackson, Bryce Brown and Sammy Watkins indicates they're doing something wrong. ACL injuries is one thing. But hamstring injuries should be preventable for the most part.

And other weird stuff like Karlos Williams getting hurt badly enough in Sunday's game that he had to have some sort of surgical procedure done but the training staff not catching it. Percy's Harvin's injury not healing up well. McKelvin's recovery taking WAY too long.

It just seems like a whole lot of injury stuff going on that indicates the training staff is doing a poor job.

Pretty confident Fred's injury was made up. I was at that practice. Quick, limp and poof veteran off for a few weeks. Kyle Williams the same with his thigh. I'm waiting for Mario's.

I'm nervous about McCoy - Schefter said he should be back for the opener which means it's likely a Grade 1 or 2 Strain.

A grade 1 per Bramel is 0-2+ weeks, and a grade 2 is 3-6 weeks. We are 3.5 weeks from the opener, so hopefully it's not a grade 2 strain being rushed back.

Terrell Davis/Michael Fabiano saying don't touch him in fantasy as he'll be injured all year. I know it's at his current fantasy price but didn't OBJ come back from a hammy and go big? He got hurt late August and missed 4-6 weeks (4 games)

The debate after game 1 about which QB was best of the bunch was very refreshing. Is anyone afraid we're going to be back to reality later tonight - talking about which QB was the least horrible?

I hope not, but after this week's injuries I'm feeling like a few more gut punches are on the way.

Go Bills!

Yeah, it will be interesting. Will the lack of anyone to run the ball impact the QB's performance?

Not nearly as much as in the regular season.

My brother just told me that he just heard Cassel isn't going to play tonight. Apparently the staff is confident that they know what he's got, so it's going to be Tyrod and EJ with extended opportunities.

Kind of a bummer... I want to see as many plays as possible from Tyrod and Cassel. Oh, well...

If they think they know what they've got in Cassel, and I have absolutely no reason to doubt them given how long he's been in the league, then this is actually pretty smart. Let Taylor (and EJ) play.

Bills top 5 RBs (McCoy, Fred, WIlliams, Brown, Boobie) and top 3 WRs (Watkins, Woods, Harvin) all inactive tonight. Good luck, Tyrod.
:lmao:

Only the Bills man. At least the starting O-line will all be there.

I'm actually interested to see how a couple of the young rookie WRs do actually. Andre Davis and Thompson have both been impressive at times so far. With as bad of camps Hogan and Goodwin have had, it's possible he or both of Davis and Thmpson could eek onto the team. I already think Goodwin is basically gone. Hogan was a favorite of Marrone, but has had a ton of drops in camp this year.

Honestly, I hope Tyrod plays well enough to earn the start in the third preseason game. If that happens and he plays decently there, then I think he's the guy. I know that Cassel could be that game manager type that helps win close ball games with a great defense and running game, mouth screw that. I'd rather have an actual potential franchise QB that would be around for a while and help win games by 20+ points. Taylor offers that, Cassel does not.

How the hell is it even possible for this many guys to be hurt at this point in the season?
Buffalo's training staff is a joke. 4 of those guys have hamstring injuries. 2 have hip injuries. One has a calf injury. And he has some unknown injury.

There's no way all those guys should be having that many muscle related injuries. That's some combination of poor conditioning, poor nutrition, poor maintenance or poor stretching. They're clearly not doing something right.

And just look at how long McKelvin's injury is taking. He should have been back and healthy from his surgical procedure a long time ago. This is continual with this team. They constantly endure muscle related neuroses at a high rate and seem to take a long time to get guys healthy.

I strongly agree with you on this, but I have a feeling in my gut that any positive vibes I send TT's way in August will come back to haunt me when he has a 4 INT game in November that knocks us out of the playoff hunt and we're all wondering why the Bills couldn't find a game manager to complement their running game and kick-### defense.

That should have been a TD to Thompson. It was a great throw. Hit him right in the chest.

Not sure how the Bills can't make Tyrod the starter after this if he plays decently in Week 3 preseason.

I felt it was a little underthrown, he should be throwing for the back pylon. That said, Thompson should've made more of a play on the ball and should've caught it.

I'm just starting to watch this game. That Darby INT play on the Browns first drive is awesome. Lots of QB pressure, big hit on the WR and a pick. Awesome.

I know this is absolutely meaningless, but EJ has always been a pretty clutch player.
I only watched the last drive, but I wasn't impressed. It was some good, some bad. The 4th down TD was good, but the sack on 2nd down was awful (an NFL QB has to be smarter than to take that sack, and that is something that should be ingrained by the time you get in the league), and some of his throws were woefully inaccurate. Still a work in progress, I suppose.

So Apparently to Marcel Dareus, an offer of $90M over 6 years to a guy with multiple off the field incidents, a suspension, and multiple fines last year for being late to meetings is "insulting" and demonstrates that they don't really want him there.

He is in the same teir as Suh and McCoy. Not saying anything about his opinion or anything else, the deal or anything else. Just posting what I consider to be his peers contracts. I was interested so I thought others might be too.

What did you guys think of Tyrod's work last night?

I only caught the tail end of the first half, but I'm thinking he should start week 1 vs. the colts.

Speaks volumes about his potential that he performed well in these circumstances.

TT is pretty much my last round pick moving forward. On no one's radar, and could really surprise. Running QBs can put up points in buckets.
