2021 Buffalo Bills - Same as it ever was*** (1 Viewer)

Bills top 5 RBs (McCoy, Fred, WIlliams, Brown, Boobie) and top 3 WRs (Watkins, Woods, Harvin) all inactive tonight. Good luck, Tyrod.
Speaks volumes about his potential that he performed well in these circumstances.

TT is pretty much my last round pick moving forward. On no one's radar, and could really surprise. Running QBs can put up points in buckets.
I drafted him in our pack league way back in May.

Quick thoughts on drive 1

Pass 1: Dumped off after 1 read - no pressure
Pass 2: Nice out route. On time, on target. 1st down.
Pass 3: Designed roll out. Dumped off to FB, which looked like the primary target. Efficient.
Pass 4: Locked onto first read, but he came open and ball was delivered a bit off target, but complete. 1st Down.
Pass 5: Early pressure scrambled a bit kept eyes down field for a second, then took off to gain 2-3 yards. Good job of keeping eyes down field.
Pass 6: Quick 1st read, I presume to see if theres a busted coverage, then snaps to read 2 on opposite side of field and completes a short button hook for a first down. Good looking execution.
Pass 7: Intended screen to RB. RB didn't get open, Taylor runs for a first down. Good job improvising. Definitely not a play any other QB on this roster could make.
Pass 8: 3rd down in the red zone. Taylor forced to break out of the pocket, took sakc with easy opportunity to throw it away. Leads to missed FG. -3

Overall, very impressive, but a mistake at the end that cost points.

Honestly, if Suh's worth $114m, Dareus is worth that too.
I really like Dareus, but Suh is better. Dareus deserves close to that though.

But I'm not sure how a $90M offer indicates the Bills don't want the guy.
It's a negotiating tactic. A crappy one, but yea. I know this is all about $$, but I still tend to frown at bit on athletes who do this unless the team actually insults them (i.e. when the Yanks insulted Jeter).

I'm starting to get very cautiously optimistic that the QB situation isn't quite as bad as we've thought. We don't have a pro bowler on our roster, but Cassel and Taylor have both completely serviceable, especially considering that nobody is asking them to go out and win the game on their own. I admittedly didn't watch much of EJ -- nothing to add there.

Easy now. This is preseason.

But it's encouraging that neither have been a disaster.

C'mon! Seriously?

I hope this is a gamble in hopes that he looks good and they can find a team to give a 6th round pick for him. It should also make it easier for Tyrod and Cassel to look better as they'll, at least in part, be playing against lesser defenders.

It could also put your better starting option at risk when he plays behind the second and third string o-line - kind of like when Rex put Sanchez into the 4th Q of preseason game 3 two seasons ago and lost him for the year.

Very true. I wonder if they are just going to rotate series or something like that.

That's one of the scenarios i guess:

1) Showcasing EJ so they can trade him

2) Get a sense of whether EJ is worth cutting or not

3) Keep the colts off balance so they have to gameplan for all 3 QBs in week 1

4) EJ has shown enough to make this a legit 3-man competition

5) Rex is just a weirdo

I still think EJ is the best option to start the season. Yes he is inaccurate. So is Taylor, and Taylor is one read and scramble. NFL defenses will figure him out very quickly.

Those who point out EJs faults think they will hold him back, but somehow magically think Taylor will overcome his, despite Taylor having been in the league longer and having had much more coaching time with competent coaches.

Cassel is a guy who will give you a higher completion percentage than either, as he showed in his game time action. Never mind that two of his completions were for 3 yards on third and 5. Good luck winning like that.

All this being said, I dont like the messing around. If they arent going to pick EJ (they arent) they should be maximizing the time with the ones for the guy they will be picking.

Some say it's because Rex promised all three a fair shake, and even though it's obvious EJ isn't the guy, he's shown enough to merit a start with the first string. It's more about Rex keeping his word, which is consistent with him being a "player's coach," etc.

I think this is very possible. Honestly, with all of the starting skill position players not playing tonight anyway, it doesn't seem to mean as much anyway IMO. I know that the 3rd preseason game is usually used as more of a real preparation for the season, but if most of your starting offense isn't playing anyway, then it's kind of pointless to pretend that it's a tune-up for the season.

If Rex has already decided on a starter, then he can start EJ to make EJ feel like he got a fair shot, perhaps showcase EJ for a trade or just to give EJ tape to sign elsewhere if he's cut, and reduce the change of your actual starting QB by playing him less.

There's no point in playing your starting QB a bunch in a preseason game if all of his weapons will be sitting on the bench anyway.

That's exactly what I was thinking after reading an article where Rex said he thought it was the fair thing to do.

Darby is a problem, plain and simple. If QBs are feasting on him in preseason, he's going to be toast come week 1. They need to put Graham back at CB #2 until McKelvin can play.

I came to say the same thing. Darby has the same major problem he had in college: he doesn't get his head turned around. Bills can not afford to have him out there playing that badly. Graham needs to be put back at CB immediately.

And get the freaking starting D out of there. No more injuries.

I'll be honest, if the Bills decided to cut Cassel and keep EJ I probably wouldn't fault them.

Also, this offense could actually be pretty good if guys ever get healthy. Big IF since they just keep racking more up.

I really like Tyrod. He needs to be the guy.

I also like Roman. This offense has had some really nice designs.

That being said, the Steelers defense is awful.

Matt Simms with a great drive and TD pass now. Buffalo QBs just destroying every level of Pittsburgh's defense.

Matt Cassel now the only Buffalo QB without a TD drive this preseason.

Training camp started, it was Matt, tyrod, EJ.

Not surprising, the vet, the backup, the development QB who never got developed.

Good problem.....the backup and the development QB actually improved as time went on....Matt just kept being Matt.

Hoping this is what happened and Matt gets named #3. Either of the other two can do the job.

My guess - Tyrod, EJ, Cassel cut and they keep Simms as the 3rd guy.

But Rex could go a little out of the box and start EJ with Tyrod as the (unhappy) backup, and keep Cassel as insurance.

Anyone know what cutting Cassel does for the cap? His contract isn't guaranteed, right?

It makes me nervous that all the Bills reporters I follow have said that Tyrod SHOULD be the starter but that they think Cassel is still the favorite. Seems like they've heard something and Rex is gonna Rex it up and go overly conservative.

In other news, I hated that the Bills signed that bonehead IK. But I have to admit that it seems like it may work out really well. Not only have they had injuries at the position since then, but the guy has made quite a few plays as well.

If they start Cassel this will feel like the same old Bills. And if anything, the Bills this preseason have not felt like the same old Bills.

I'm almost nervous about the announcement today...

There's not going to be an announcement. Rex has already said that while he'll decide who the starter is today, they're not going to announce it until kickoff against the Colts.

Crap, dreaded "game time decision". This makes planning so hard... I want a piece of Taylor but if Rex settles on EJ or Cassell, no thank you.

thank God Rex isn't announcing that Tyrod is the starter...now I can get him in the last round of almost every draft...specifically my 14team 2QB league as my #3

Where do you guys rank the D? My league has a lot of points based on yards against. Is the secondary such a problem that these guys become a risky proposition? I've targeted them in every mock. Seattle, Houston usually go off the board. I've been looking at the Bills shortly thereafter..

They will be a top 3 defense. Pass rush will help and Darby will improve.
I'm worried about this part. I cut rookie DBs a lot of slack, but he's been bad even by NFL rookie CB standards. And this defense absolutely requires CBs who can play man defense. I hope you're right and that he turns things around, of course.

Edit: I stopped playing fantasy quite a while ago -- no comment on their fantasy value.
