2021 Buffalo Bills - Same as it ever was*** (3 Viewers)

Here we go RT @AdamSchefter: Well, this is interesting: Bills also expressing interest in free-agent CB Darrelle Revis, per sources.
I seriously doubt it. Reports are he wanted $40M guaranteed over 3 years. Either his agent trying to drive up the price, or the Bills trying to cause the Jets to panic and give Revis the moon.

Like I said in the Phili thread, I'm sorta sad that the Bills didn't work a way to steal Foles too. My gawd, Chip Kelly practically gave him away.

Please please no Percy Harvin. The guy is supposed to be locker room cancer wherever he goes, and we're already rolling the dice on Incognito.

Let's not become the new Browns now, Rex.

Sounds like Clay is the big target left for the Bills right now. I do think he'd be a great addition.
He's certainly an upgrade, but not really a player i'd get excited about
I honestly didn't know that this person existed until his name started getting linked to the Bills in free agency. His stats look okay but nothing special. Is he supposed to provide a security blanket for whichever lucky fan gets to start at QB later in the season? Or is there something else there?

You didn't know who Clay was? We go up against him twice a year.

You seem like a morning person.

Do you watch football?

He's not Gronk or Graham but he's in the mix as a tier 2 or at worst tier 3 TE.

Depending on the contract, signing Clay might be the best move they've made so far. Not only is he a very good receiver, but he's a very good run blocker as well. His knee is a concern, so I wouldn't want a huge chunk guaranteed.

That's what I mean. I watch at least two Miami games a year and still didn't know that he was on their roster.

Granted, I haven't played fantasy football in years so my knowledge of offensive skill position players around the league isn't what it was.

Loved Clay since he was at Tulsa. Great athlete, but offer sheet is going to be pretty steep to get the Dolphins to not match. Browns interested too I guess.

Fins fan, and Clay dynasty owner. Very good player. Very versatile, deceptively quick. Can line up as a fullback and carry the ball on occasion too. Came out as an H-Back type but used much more as a traditional TE. As both a Fins fan and a dynasty owner, I hope Buffalo's offer is not too steep that the Fins cant match it. Tanny isnt Montana, but I'd rather have him as the trigger man than Matt Cassel anyday.

He is coming off an injury plagued season, so I thought we'd get him back on the cheap. Does not appear to be the case. I thought $7M was steep, but it looks like he may get in excess of $8M. A lot for him, but he is a very good player, and all of the free agents are getting crazy contracts right now. I dont think the Bills fans will be disappointed with him. Fun player to watch.

Bills signed DT Kyle Williams to a one-year, $10.5 million contract extension through 2017.

Williams was scheduled to count $6.4 million against the cap this season, and this is likely a move to help knock that number down after the Bills' recent spending spree. Soon-to-be 32-year-old Williams has really blossomed into one of the best defensive tackles. He has 20.5 sacks over the past three seasons.
What a great 5th round pick that was. This guys has been huge for this franchise. Was the star D-lineman before the other guys even showed up.

I'm concerned all of these big moves are going to set us up for cap hell in 2-3 years. And three of their highest paid players are going to be pretty old at that point - M. Williams, L. McCoy and K. Williams.

The Bills still have $36M available next year even before it gets raised. They're going to be fine.

They have a lot of young talent not getting paid tons. Think of their receivers, o-linemen, linebackers, Qbs.

It's all relative- the Bills are near the bottom in cap space available for 2016 right now, and some teams are going to be forced to hand out massive signing bonuses to get above the floor.

And those guys are going to need new deals right at the same time the Bills still have some big contracts on the books.

I for one think the playoffs are overrated. Hopefully the Bills can make a push for the Best Use of Cap Space championship. That trophy would look really nice on display at OBD.

Yeah, how dare anyone question the moves of this model franchise. Hopefully the next 15 years are just as good as the last!
Normally I would shrug and agree with this shtick, but then Chip Kelly happened to Phili and everyone looks a little shinier - even Cleveland.

I'd love for this team to make the playoffs... I've lived through this drought just like everyone else. But the playoffs shouldn't be the ultimate goal - it should be a Superbowl win. And this team isn't capable of winning the Superbowl next year (and probably the following year) without a QB.

1) I don't think that's true

2) the only way they're getting that QB is through the draft anyway

I mean, let's be honest, all this garbage where people complain and say that they can't win without a QB is just another way of saying you hope they give up and don't try every year over and over until they get lucky at QB.

I also find it hilarious that people are complaining about the money being spent and whining that they have other young talent that will need to be paid in the future. Duh. That's how it always works though. Elite teams always have young top talent that is cheap. And eventually it gets hard to pay them all and you have to trust them to keep drafting well.

Until they get to a point where their current signings hamstring the team, why not enjoy the fact that they're spending money and trying to get better? For so many years the complaint was that Ralph Wilson was cheap and it was hurting the team. Now the complaint is that they are spending too much and hurting them in some theoretical future where they have a stud QB. Come on guys.

1) Of course it's true. It's delusional to think the Bills have a realistic chance to win the SB.

2) This isn't true- a couple of starting QBs were just traded, and there are tons of good QBs who are due to be FA's next offseason. Most of them won't be, but one might.

They are spending the money in the wrong places. There is a reason why pretty much everyone else isn't committing a lot of money to a RB, and giving up what they did for Cassel is dumb. I want them to spend money, but not waste it. Put it where it counts- if they can't get a good QB, then O-line, defense, etc.

Seriously? You think Foles or Bradford would have been the answer? And how many elite QB's have changed teams over the last decade? I can think of Brees and Manning, and when Brees switched teams, nobody out there viewed him as a stud. Maybe toss Warner into it, but again, everyone thought he was done. So 3 guys over a decade plus? That's what you want to hang your hat on and hope for?

And you're dead wrong about the Bills not being able to win a Super Bowl. It's extremely difficult to win more than one without an elite QB, but it's absolutely possible.

Ya, I think Foles or Bradford could have certainly been a long-term answer.

Also, I never said the Bills needed an elite QB. A good QB is sufficient (Foles and Bradford could fit that description). The only team to win a SB without a "good" QB in the last 25 years was the Baltimore Ravens in 2000. So, ya, it's possible to do it with poor QB play, but you'll need a historically dominant defense to do so. Historically, those aren't good odds to rely upon.

Let me get this straight- you think the Bills can win the Super Bowl this year with EJ Manuel and Matt Cassel at QB, but they couldn't win it with Bradford or Foles? :lmao:

The Bills don't need an "elite" QB, they need an above-average one. Yes, I absolutely believe that both of those guys at least have a chance to be above average, unlike their current garbage.

Releasing Chandler seems a little premature if they don't have Clay locked up yet.
Wow... that is interesting, but it sounds like the Clay deal is all but done. I don't think Miami has the ability to resign him after the Suh deal.

Everyone was looking for Chandler's replacement for the last 5 years, but he was fairly productive when called upon. I hope he lands in a good spot for him.

Actually, Miami structured Suh's deal to try to keep Clay. Suh gets his $25M signing bonus this year plus the vet minimum this year. So his cap hit is only like $5.5M this year. Which means they still have about $7M in cap space.

Of course, the Dolphins are totally screwed next year. Suh's salary for next year is $23M guaranteed. Add in his prorated signing bonus and his cap hit next year is a whopping $28M!!!

The Dolphins already have $125M committed to next year's cap and that doesn't include any of these guys:

R. Tennehill

M. Pouncey

O. Vernon

L. Miller

D. Shelby

R. Matthews

Toss in another $7-8M if they keep Clay and that leaves them with only $10-15 M tops available next year for all those other guys plus free agents.

They tried to get cute in order to keep Clay and it's going to destroy them next year. Such is an elite player, but that contract is going to wreck them for a long time.

Holy crap. Are you sure this is true? That's insane.

Thanks... this contradicts an earlier report on ESPN. Even if the Dolphins keep Clay from the Bills, then they will still be hamstrung by the contract. I don't really like the idea of the Bills dropping Chandler though without having the Clay deal wrapped up.
Clay is nice for overall skills but Gresham & Cameron there as backups. At least give Bills downfield TE they haven't had.

I still don't understand why we cut Chandler without having a replacement yet. What happens if Miami matches Clays offer or if Cleveland bid higher? Then what? Maqueis Gray? Chris Gregg?

Who else is available?

Cameron

Greshham

Z.Miller

We could always draft one I suppose. Trade up for Max Williams or settle for a lessor rookie.

Reports are they're showing interest in Fasano. He wouldn't make a bad #2 TE, right? Tough-nosed, lunch-pail kind of guy who's made a decent rep for himself blocking?

I still don't understand why we cut Chandler without having a replacement yet.
Just speculation, but it may have been a "courtesy cut." If they knew they wanted to replace Chandler, the nice thing to do is cut him now and give him a chance to latch on elsewhere. Waiting a week and then cutting him would have put him in a bad spot.

Not saying that's why, or that it's makes sense from the business end of things, but it's a good way to treat a guy who's been here for a while.

I absolutely think that had something to do with it. They know they're going to replace him somehow and didn't want to screw him over. Fasano is going to replace Lee Smith as their #2 TE primarily used for blocking. We'll see if they land Clay but from everything I've heard they're really gunning for him. I expect an offer sheet today that Miami will have a very tough time matching. Of course there's always Cleveland, and they could very well sneak in and snag him.
