2021 College football thread - Auburn’s gotta Auburn. (3 Viewers)

Yeah I went to the Rose Bowl in the mid 90s when UCLA played Wisconsin. There were lots of rumors before the game that Bruin fans had sold their tickets to Badger fans but nobody knew what to believe. Get inside the stadium and it was all Wisconsin. So embarrassing, never forgot that. But that’s UCLA fans for you.

Yea but it was also a noon kick, for a game against Hawaii, in august, so you could have the pleasure of sitting on metal benches at a stadium that is hell to get in and out of. Would any of us go to that game if it was your school? I sure as hell wouldn’t.

Also, playing home games two weeks before kids are in school is dumb.

Wisconsin travels well but on the flip side they don't ever win in the Rose Bowl

Nebraska - Illinois was the earliest game ever in the B1G.  My D3 private school alma mater went back this week; do big schools start later?  I know OSU is on the quarter system; other B1G schools are similar?

I have no idea when other schools start - I think it’s dumb across the board to start before students. You’re taking away part of the experience when you do that.

While @WDIK2 could probably answer this the best, my suspicion is that since he's an alum and had success as a QB there, he has a long leash.  The only way I could see him being broken off is if they turn in a 1-11 or 2-10 stinker.
I don't think he gets fired mid-year unless he kills a kitten in practice or something, but I think he's pretty much done.  Before the season I thought they could be a 5-7 win team.  Now I'm thinking 4 wins is the ceiling with 2 being more likely.

Oregon doesn't start school until the end of September.  It is really really really awkward to go to the first few games and see just a handful of students.

That said, taking one the twins to the game Saturday and could not be more excited.  Early kick - 11am so we'll depart by 7:30am, grab some grub, walk to the stadium.  I have to show proof of vaccination, which I'm happy to do.  I'm going to make him wear a mask, but he's okay with that.  I'm just so happy to have live sports back.

If you're walking over the bridge from campus, our tailgate spot is  near where you cross the canal in front of Autzen (just to the left past the bicycle parking cages along the canal).  It's going to be a small group of us for this first game so we won't be doing much for food, but we'll be there and will have a beer for ya!

Oh man, that would be terrific!  I'd love to have a beer with you at 10am. ;)

College football!  Cannot wait to see a live game again.

@billyliucci: New deal between Texas A&M and Jimbo Fisher will average right at $9 million over 10 years. Should be approved tomorrow. Aggie AD @RossBjorkAD and the Board stepped up in a big time way. Long-term commitment from both sides here.

I  used to get so wound up for opening weekend.  Now, I don't even know what channel Auburn is on this weekend, and I'm not sure who they're playing.

Plus with Gus gone, I don't have anything to ##### at.   What am I supposed to do?  Watch a mediocre team with severe talent issues, but the person responsible for this #### show isn't around to cuss?

Me, Saturday night

For the first time in my life, I have a rooting interest in college football (no football at either of the schools my wife and I attended). Thanks to my kid, I’ll be catching two USC games at the Coliseum this season. Maybe we’ll get to see you at season’s end.

Oh, NICE!  I hope you find the College Game as much fun as I do.  I haven't been a pro game in over 25 years (Elway at the old Jack Murphy Stadium in SD - my god could he hum the ball) and doubt I'll ever go since I enjoy it so much on TV.  But college is just so much fun.  Fraction of the price, so much enthusiasm, not as many bozos.  Plus you don't have to go to work the next day.

Never been to the Coliseum but it's definitely a goal of mine.  USC should be good but Clay Helton has underwhelmed year over year.  The USC band is worth the experience alone.

FOOTBALL!!!!!!!

Has there ever been that many undefeated teams?

Thinking also not a fan of the Pac-12 with 2 loss ND ahead of undefeated UW.  But, that's not unusual.  Pac12 is warmed over sewage.
Lol as much as we dump on the Pac, any 12-0 team coming out of there would not be ranked 12th. 5th at the extreme lowest, probably 3rd.

LA gets deserved fan support grief, but man seeing USC play at the Coliseum is a dam good way to get in to the sport!  Hopefully with a good crowd again.

Do they not play USC this year because they’re also 12-0. Oregon is also 10-2 losing to Washington and Ohio State - do they not play USC either?

RIP to a great college LB...Keith McCants.  Had to fill Derrick Thomas' shoes and flashed such elite size/speed that in 1 season he shot into the top 5 in the draft.  The Bucs moved him to DL for some reason, as he was famously fast and notoriously weak.  Struggled with addiction while his career stalled and never fully got back on track.

Yeah no way a Clay Helton coached team goes 12-0.

Oregon and UW play each other but both miss USC this year.  And USC does play Notre Dame, so there's a miss in there as well.

What I do know is that it's down to 1 day, 16 hours, and 31 minutes until I'll be tailgating in a college stadium parking lot again.

Stroud looks like a freshman and is way off
I agree. Day has to handle this just right but is on a razor thin line.

If you can roll with Stroud and let him figure this out tonight and come through with a win, you set the young fella up for a great year.

If you roll with him and he continues to sputter, you mayblose a game that you should have won, it hurts the team and hurts the confidence of your qb.

If you make the change to another qb, Stroud may not recover.

Wasn't there a pretty long term commitment already?  Did they really give him more money?  I've been out of the loop.

Basically 3 year extension with 25% pay raise (starting next year). And it's all guaranteed.

Agent Jimmy Sexton has to renegotiate after a good year.

Big 12 looking at 4 schools to expand.

BYU, University of Central Florida, Cincinnati and Houston are the four institutions that are have been in serious discussion to join the conference, per The Athletic. The athletic directors and presidents of the remaining eight schools in the Big 12 met with commissioner Bob Bowlsby on Tuesday and Wednesday to discuss the future of the conference.

"Hey guys, how'd you like to be left out of the playoff bracket for a WHOLE DIFFERENT REASON?"

Unbelievable.

Going to be pretty epic whenever they get around to buying out this contract.

The best teams of the non-power 5 (4 now) should get together and form something with the best remaining teams from the Big12.  Ship Kansas to the Pac12 for basketball and Iowa State to Big10 to give Ohio State another tougher obstacle since Michigan can't seem to do that anymore.

Oh, lookie here, Mr. Mean Hater Guy:

The Big 12's preference for conference expansion includes adding four members, according to The Athletic's Max Olson.

Depending on how fast the presidents and the institutions of each school can reach an agreement on what schools to invite, the process of adding new members to the conference could be expedited.

"Following two days of consultation with the athletic directors of the continuing members of the Big 12 conference, Bowlsby said in a statement, "The eight ADs remain committed to furthering the Big 12 as one of the nation's premier athletic conferences, and look forward to working with our presidents and chancellors to strengthen the league.

"Future exploration by the group will continue to center on options that best position the long-term strength of the Conference."
