From the 100+ year old idiom “you can’t have the inmates running the asylum.” The etymology is thought to date back to when DW Griffith, Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks started the production company United Artists. At the time the idea seemed absurdist - letting the performers have greater control projects instead of powerful, monolithic studios. UA is still around.
