As I think about the NBA, unless you have THAT GUY, none of the rest of this really even matters.  And how many teams have THAT GUY?  Maybe ten?

You definitely need a superstar to win a championship unless you are the Detroit Pistons who were so well balanced. Even the surprise teams had a superstar...Giannis, Dirk, Kawhi.

Very good news in Spurs land today. Brett Brown is going back as an assistant to take Becky Hammond's spot. Some are speculating that Brown might replace Pop as the HC eventually. Really happy for Brett and there's a lot of people around the league who love this guy. Seems like he took the year  or so off after the cluster#### with the 76ers. Hinkie and him didn't get along and in the long run they lied about a few things to him like agreeing to stuff he wanted to implement but then taking back those promises. Dealing with a ownership who treated their star players with kid gloves etc. Like I said from a former coworker who was neighbors with Brown during that time it sounded like he was relieved to be fired by the 76ers when he was.

Now Brown is back in a situation he's comfortable with.

Mavs continue to get 2nd tier free agents who were once thought to amount to something but got to the Mavs and failed, maybe it is poor scouting/GM: Porzingis. Hardaway Jr. Deandre Jordan. Harrison Barnes. Wes Matthews. Dwight Powell. Devin Harris. J-Rich. Dennis Smith Jr. Courtney Lee. The list goes on. At least they kept Dirk around for 20+ years with his shaky knees-at least that was respectable.

Can you imagine paying Hardaway Jr 21+ million and Bertans 16 million last year.
Almost none of those were free agents. Matthews and Jordan might be it? Don't recall how Lee came around but it's not like he was a meaningful use of resources.

Devin Harris was wildly successful with the Mavs repeatedly.

Powell can't possibly be viewed as someone who was once thought to amount to something and then came in? Nor Courtney Lee? Powell has spent basically his entire career with Dallas an has outperformed his contract every season except the one when he was injured and out for the year lol. Courtney Lee was a cheap veteran brought in for locker room leadership?

Porzingis was a decent shot in a trade that didn't work out. The cost to get off of him was taking Bertans to get Dinwiddie (team actually got better, and even Bertans was instrumental in a game or two in the playoffs). Hardaway is worth the money, and one of the other reasons why it is totally reasonable to scoff at Brunson's price and let him walk. With Hardaway and a bit better shooting luck Dallas might be the NBA champion right now.

Lol, KD wants a trade and then….

Utah is trading Royce O'Neale to Brooklyn for a first-round pick, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium.

No

Woj:

Washington is finalizing a trade to acquire Denver's Will Barton and Monte Morris for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Ish Smith, sources tell ESPN.
Denver better have a part two coming here in FA because they are pretty thin considering MPJ's brittle back.

It would be a shame to waste another year of prime Joker, just to go out in the first round again.

Come on.

The NBA off-season really is amazing.

They paid the guy the max to rehab an Achilles for a year and a half.  (obviously both parties knew the deal) Then he missed most of 20-21 and only played 55 games this year. Then he gets swept right out of the playoffs and decides winning in Brooklyn is too hard.

Incredible talent and he's got 2 rings/finals MVP's that nobody can take away from him. But man...what an absolute mental weakling that dude is.

I don't think that is it at all. I think he thought teaming up with Kyrie would be fun and successful. He realizes he is wrong and when Kyrie opted in he opted out.

Dude was two inches from making probably the biggest shot in playoff history and going to the finals.

If it wasn’t already inevitable, there’s going to be a lengthy lockout next time the CBa expires.

As there should be. Owners and teams need to get back some of the power lost to players. Stop them from running the teams. Players play not GM the team. Occasional input and what not sure but to allow them everything they want is a bit ridiculous.

Won't happen. Stars drive the league, as it should be.

Disagree be on the same team with Kyrie and Harden for 2 yrs only for one of them to be traded for a mentally weak Ben Simmons. Tell me you wouldn't want out too? I'd want no part in a team where 2 of my teammates quit and then they traded one for another team quitter.

Fantasyland

And apparently his preferred destinations are the two # 1 seeds.

Not that I wouldn't want to live/play in Phoenix or Miami if i was a young rich athlete.....but still......dude wants the EASY road.

I love the NBA, but most NBA players are a bunch of cry babies. Every player from now on should be given 1 year deals and go from there.

What are they going to put in the CBA that stops players from doing this? The owners could stop it now under the current agreement if they had any backbone.

lol KD just requested a trade
Middleton for KD straight up.  I know it's reported that Phoenix and Miami are his preferred destinations, but neither can offer anyone of Khris's caliber.  And this has to be a consideration, since they've gotta stay competitive due to all those picks/pick swaps they owe Houston.

I don't know whose "fault" this KD thing is, but I suspect today will mark the beginning of the end of the Super Team era that started with The Decision. The Heat made the "Get a few big stars and then fill out the roster with role players" model work and lots of people copied it. In GS it worked for a couple years, too, but then the egos blew it up. Lakers the last few years had a mixed record -- got them one title, but now seems to have hamstrung the roster for the foreseeable future. Nets was a total disaster.

I bet the next time a superstar tries to dictate a team's roster they will tell him to go pound sand.

Yes, I was thinking the same. I guess they could make trade rules more difficult/situationally restricted but I’m not sure anybody would want that to happen.

Woj 💣

The Atlanta Hawks are trading Danilo Gallinari and multiple first-round picks to the San Antonio Spurs for All-Star guard Dejounte Murray, sources tell ESPN.

The Hawks are sending three first-round picks and a future pick swap to the Spurs to pair Murray with All-NBA guard Trae Young, sources tell ESPN.

Curious to see 1. how Trae and Murray play together - both seem to need/want the ball a lot.  2. What do they do with their other pieces - Collins and Hunter in particular.  Hunter looked ready to really blossom towards the end of last season.  He's a poor man's Kawhi and I love the kid.  Hoping they can hang on to him.

Love getting Murray but waiting to see what other moves they make.

wait, did i read that bradley beal, by opting out, is now eligible to make $50mm a year over 5 years?  if that is the case, just fold the nba and start from scratch.

Let's see what ATL could give up:

Collins, Hunter, Heuter and picks for KD?  They could go all in and give up more of their own 1st round picks.

I'm honestly surprised that KD hasn't played his entire career on one-year deals just so he could join the best team every year...

Mags now aggressively pursuing a trade for K……..yrie Irving. Please god why. It’s been a year of good decision making from a breath of fresh air in the front office please don’t let this be how it ends.

I’d love to be proven wrong if they do it, but I think it would be one of the worst mistakes I can imagine making to give up anything of any value for the rights to pay waaaaayyyyyyy too much money to Kyrie Irving.

james harden opted out of multiple teams, big games in the playoffs and $47mm.  what am i missing about him that others aren’t?
