The max from Phoenix would have been 4/138.5M or 5/179M. The match gets him for 4/133M so they save 5.5M. Seems like a minor amount to drive the decision-making, i.e., why not just sign him for 4/138.5 months ago and have harmony?

The only outstanding question is whether the Pacers put any poison pills in the offer sheet such as trade kicker or player options.

One other interesting note is that by allowing the RFA process to play out, Ayton avoids being a designated extension so he could be traded to a team such as Brooklyn that already has Simmons on the books.

Lol they’re insane. 5M isn’t even a rotation player.

They need to spread that tournament out, if they do some 10 day thing in Vegas, that's a disaster waiting to happen.

Everyone in Vegas remembers 2007 All Star game.

I think they were partially calling the rest of the league's and Ayton's bluff, hoping they could get the price down even more once he didn't have anywhere else to land. If their idea was either get Ayton closer to 4/110 or something and keep him or match an offer sheet to trade him next offseason, what they did makes sense from a financial standpoint. Doesn't make as much sense from a holistic standpoint being that Ayton is a real person and not a widget and is likely to be pretty pissed.

The Suns have no idea what they are doing as an organization, they just had Paul fall in their laps. Robert Sarver is one of the worst half dozen or so owners in all of sports, in real competition for #1.

Doing it this way keeps them out of that rookie contract exception thing too.  So they can take Ben Simmons on if they want to.

No poison pills, no player options, no trade kickers, just a straight up deal. Pacers made it easy on the Suns to match.

Ugh. Wish S&T would have been completed but they had little alternative but to match.

As mentioned above, Pacers made it easy for Suns to match.

NBA is way to complicated when some of the most knowledgeable NBA posters have different opinions on what can and can't happen with a player.

Hopefully they simplify some things in the next cba.

Based on Adam Silver’s comments on the KD trade demand (and past Simmons comments), they are going to try to do something about players demanding trades while under contract in the early years.

They avoided the designated extension the moment they let his contract expire. Even if they five-year-maxed him he would not have the extension designation.

Pretty easy. Make a rule that a player making at least 90% of his max cannot be traded for X number of year. (Probably with the exception of an initial sign-and-trade.)

The issue with that will be getting the Player's Union to sign-off on it...that type of rule really effects the stars, and they have a lot of power in the NBA and like to get their way.

I don't have a strong opinion about the ideal number of regular season games, but I do remember thinking the regular season was more important and interesting in 1998-99, when it was shortened to 50 games due to the lockout. Maybe I am in the minority on that.
Gotta remember that losing that many games also means losing Millions and Millions of revenue dollars for owners.  Just never gonna happen.

Hopefully they simplify some things in the next cba.

Good luck with players agreeing to that and even if they do then my guess it works both ways. So they won't be able to trade the player for the same amount of time and it just complicates things even more.

IMO people are too caught up with how much time is left in Durant's deal. He has been with the Nets 3 years already and signed this extension almost a year ago. This isn't a guy that just signed a max 2 weeks ago and demanded a trade or like Blake Griffin who signed a max with the Clippers and they traded him almost as soon as they could.

I don’t think a no trade (both ways) would be a huge problem for the players. It can benefit them, actually. A lot of those guys are older with families and probably like the known stability. The percentage that demand trades early on is low.

i've listened to too many NBA podcasts and read too much NBA news over the past few years, i think. it's made me jaded about the fans more than anything.

combine: doesn't mean anything. guys tank it. just because a guy does well doesn't mean anything.

summer league: if a guy does well, it's meaningless. competition sucks. numbers are a joke. 99% of the guys in the league won't make the NBA anyways. the best players shouldn't play. fans don't care. if a star player sucks in summer league it doesn't mean anything. he's probably taking it easy and doesn't care. fans don't watch. NBA should scrap it.

all-star game: a joke. players don't care. real fans don't care. it's for kids and celebrities. nobody actually watches any of it. should be scrapped.

regular season: largely meaningless. should be shortened. players try 50% of the time. games are worthless until the last month. 26 teams don't have a chance at the title when the season starts. 20 of those are tanking. fans don't care and nobody watches games until April.

playoffs: too long. first round should be eliminated. should be 8 teams. 4 of those are terrible and don't have a chance. nobody cares until the conference finals.

players: there are 3 elite players in the league. the next tier is just OK enough to win if they get with one of the top 3. anyone else that winds up on a team with good players is a ring chaser. players 4 - 30 are just OK enough to maybe be considered as sidekicks. everyone below that should find a new line of work.

refs: the worst examples of humanity. shouldn't even be allowed to hold a job.

coaches: teams hire the stupidest people to run teams. these guys don't even understand the basics of pick and roll that any 2K player knows inside and out.

GM's:  only got hired because they're friends with the owners wife. couldn't build a lemonade stand, much less an NBA roster. Brad and Tom at the VFW could #### a better roster.

owners: fumbling morons born in to money that spend recklessly and are tanking their franchises purposefully for a tax break.

I just love the game.  Almost all of the players do too.  You can't get to this level without being a competitive person on some level and you can't stay if you aren't super competitive.  For every Ben Simmons there are 10+ guys killing it to make themselves and their teams better.  LBJ is a doosh, but you can't deny he is one of the greatest to ever lace them up and he is still out there grinding.  Curry, too.

There are studs, role players, good coaches, good teams, surprises every year.

Sure LeBron, Curry, Kawhi, KD & Giannis give their teams a much better chance of winning a title than anyone without one of them.  But as you could see from the Lakers and Nets this season, it is no guarantee if other things aren't managed well.  Injuries are always a wildcard as well.

At the end of last season there were about 6-8 teams with a good chance to win the title if things went well.  The Celtics were a surprise (despite the computer models and their 2nd half surge) and the Warriors needed Curry to go nuclear, which was compelling TV.  If Middleton doesn't get hurt, there is a good chance the Bucks repeat.

There was some excitement in Charlotte for a bit, in Chicago and Memphis throughout the year.  Phoenix looked poised to win it and then blew it.  There was a 3-way race for MVP and some fresh faces in the upper echelons.

Don't be so pessimistic, GB.  Step back a bit, smell the roses and enjoy the games when they arrive.

Get off social media. It’s a time suck, the people are either evil, dumb or toxic or all 3 combined. You learn almost nothing accept how not to appreciate anything.

Social media is the devil and the worst thing this world ever created, other than instant reply in the NFL.

this is the crux of it

i've tried turning my focus to more upbeat, positive things like Sporkful, Milk Street, etc. that aren't focused on current events.

Yup. A while back I realized I was addicted to Twitter. I don’t have tiktok or snapass and don’t use Facebook much but I didn’t like how much I was on Twitter. So I started buying a lot more books - not on kindle, because that’s too easy to just toggle over to Twitter, but real books. It’s helped keep me off all that garbage as much.

[N.O. Pelican] EJ Liddell - torn ACL
Looks like the house already knew about this. Sucks for the kid.

Question: In the NBA, how long does this kind of knee injury typically sideline a player? A full 12 months? Shorter? Longer? I know it will vary a lot, just curious.

For the NFL and NCAA football players, I mentally think of "12 months" for knee ligament injuries. But sometimes guys come back a little faster than that.

it depends a little bit on whether it was a full tear or not.  I think it's fairly safe to say that it takes 12 months to really be back, but some guys can be technically cleared in as little as like 8, I think.  Spencer Dinwiddie is probably the quickest recovery that I know of, although he wasn't totally right, it seemed.

apparently when it comes to Jimmy Butler and the playoffs you really can throw out the stats

Dude just wasn't that good during the regular season and then turned it on and got hot a few times in the playoffs.  He's a great player, but is simply inconsistent during the season.  I thought the calls that he should have been 1st team All-NBA because of how great he was during the playoffs totally missed that he was extremely inefficient throughout the season offensively.  His defense and effort are usually there, but he can go cold as often as he gets hot.

can remember watching him play at Marquette and thinking the guy was terrific energy-wise and could sink his teeth in on D but his offense was.... offensive.

he's basically the same guy but evolved. not that it's a bad thing. i never thought he'd be what he became so kudos to him for breaking the ceiling to get here.

That’s why they are saying to prepare for a lockout. I think this gets addressed one way or another. No clue how restrictive, but they are going to cut down on players creating super teams on their own or signing these contracts that exist solely to give the “home” team an advantage over free agency to only see guys sign the deals and then want traded.

I started a new business earlier this year and have been pretty swamped and fell behind around here.

WRT the trade, I think it was a bet on their ability at the highest levels in the playoffs. Overall, I think Barton and KCP are roughly similar talents but KCP's skill set (better D and shooting, less on ball skill) is a better fit with a championship caliber team. KCP makes the starting lineup work much better and he'll be getting the easiest looks of his career so he should shine.

I'm much less enthusiastic about losing Morris as I feel like Murray was often at his best off ball and Morris was probably in line to play starters minutes as Murray is going to be on a bit of a minutes limit and probably taking back to backs off. I'm confident in Bones stepping up a bit but losing Morris is a bummer. Ish Smith feels like a really good 3rd PG or a pretty poor backup.

With all of that said, I think it probably gave the front office the ability to sign Bruce Brown because the Kroenkes are cheap #######s, so looking at it through that lens, Bruce Brown, KCP (now contracted for three seasons), and Ish Smith is an improvement over Morris and Barton. If Bones take a mini leap next season, it could be a big win. If he is inconsistent, the Nuggets are going to be desperate for a plus backup PG and will again struggle in the bench minutes.

From the Wizards perspective, this was a win assuming they were looking to improve and potentially make the real playoffs. Alas, that is the wrong approach, but it's been the approach for the last 15 years. Being the 8th seed is the worst place to be for a team that isn't on the way up.
Love this take. Denver will only go as far as the health of Murray and MPJ--without them this will another one and done year.

On a side note, I am getting so frustrated with not being able to see Nuggets and Avs games. This stupid standoff is going on to year 3.

What is this?

nuggets and avs aren't shown on most local cable systems in Denver due to some standoff between the kroenkes and the cable companies over payment.

at least it's not like those teams are good or anything...

Woah. That sucks I feel bad for the fans. I wish the fans could stage a walkout or something, maybe even have the players join in if something like that hasn't already happened.

So Westbrook parted ways with his agent, and the agent sends a crazy statement to Woj about how Russ would be best served staying with the lakers. Apparently Russ wants off the Lakers but hasn’t asked for a trade.

Meanwhile LeBron and Rich Paul are sending tweets about it all.

Fun times.

It's like every season since Jerry Buss died is an attempt to plumb new depths of disfunction.

Marc Stein says the league will put a microscope on the 76ers Tucker signing for possible tampering. They could get a similar punishment if found to tampering as the whole Ball saga and teams being punished for that. However the Tucker investigation could open a can of worms to the Harden trade. Similar Morey had Harden in HOU however 76ers part owner who may or may not be selling his shares depending who you ask, Micheal Rubin right now is really good friends with Harden and there could've been talks between Rubin at the time and Harden who was legally contracted by Brooklyn for tampering as well.

To be clear there is a ton of tampering in the NBA period. Most of these super teams were formed through loop holes of Owners GMs telling their star player if they are recruiting to tell X player or his agent if they have the same one contract numbers etc they'd be willing to dish out among other things. This why a lot of deals at the start of FA are already agreed to within seconds. NBA should do better on clearing this up in the next CBA. takeaway the major loop holes

The tampering stuff is so stupid. They all do it and they all know it. And even the fans know it. They need to officially change the rule.

Been saying that for awhile. The league picks and chooses though as well who has to abide and who doesn't though so it's inconsistent.

To help combat that on the Nuggets' side, I upgraded to a half season ticket plan. Pretty excited for that. I don't understand why they won't just release a streaming option for altitude. I would pay 30 bucks a month from October to May.
