I also didn’t realize that the Mavs received Markieff Morris as part of the deal. While I don’t think he’s a major factor—I do think that he is the type of player that can provide some depth off of the bench when healthy

Claxton has taken a big step and Cam Thomas is ready to pick up the scoring slack - with the 2 new additions they can still make a run if KD is in top form...plus I still think Marks has one more trade for the front court. How the team finishes will likely result in if KD stays or not. As a fan Im very pleased to get Kyrie out of town - addition by subtraction but still like the pieces they got from a very weak position.

There is a big difference in style between Westbrook and jokic. Jokic truly doesn't care about his stats as long as he's contributing to helping the team win. His ego is nearly non-existent - early in his career the team was begging him to take more shots and get more aggressive but he didn't want to take opportunities from his teammates. He has constantly said that he would rather get an assist than a shot because it makes two players happy not one.

We can disagree with his MVP candidacy but it's impossible to find any evidence that he is a stat hunter. In fact, he has something like 40 near triple doubles where he is one pt/reb/ast from a triple double. That's not something that would happen with a player who was trying to compile stats.

The only two picks the Lakers could have swapped, if giving away their '27/'29 picks, are '26 and '28. The Nets don't have a '26 pick to swap. I'm guessing the way it was worded to the twitter sources was something like 27/29 picks with all available swaps. Ultimately, it's only a '28 swap though.

Alternatively, say they sign him to a 4 year max and he's on relatively good behavior (i.e. no big media scandals and just does more run of the mill weird Kyrie things) but he's on a slow and relative decline. He's a incredibly skilled point guard, but he still is very reliant on his quickness and his ability to get to the hoop has already greatly diminished (he's taking fewer than half as many shots at the rim as his Cleveland days) and he hasn't been exactly a beacon of health in his career. He missed the last three games of the 2021 playoffs. He missed most of 2020, including the bubble. He missed the back quarter of the 2018 season and all of the playoffs. He missed the end of the 2015 playoffs with an injury that kept him out for a quarter of the following season. He hardly played at Duke because of injury.

Taking out his personality from the equation, the trade was for an injury prone declining athlete in his 30s that has been more likely to not make it through the playoffs healthy enough to play than to actually contribute all the way though the playoffs.

The Mavs payed close to market value for a healthy, sane version of Irving, and he's tended to be neither.

Just trying to put myself in the Mavs shoes right now. I’m just wondering if I’m more comfortable trying to lock Kyrie in on a 3 or 4 year deal- or if I’m more comfortable just rolling the dice and risk losing him at the end of the season. I think the risk is that if they dont sign him to a long term deal this season- he just walks over to the Lakers as a free agent-being that the Lakers could just let Russ walk. However- how comfortable should any team feel committing a large contract to Kyrie? I personally think that both options come with a massive amount of risk.

On another note- what are our thoughts on the Suns? It became clear that they were shopping and offering Cp3 in the Kyrie sweepstakes- and clearly that didn’t work out. Do the Suns just stand pat now and hope that things will be cool with cp3 and that locker room- or does this force them to make moves and change things up? Last season Ayton was ostracized and now things are weird for cp3.
