Thug is not a racist term for black people.

It is used for people who embrace, celebrate and at least pretend to engage in a culture of violence, particularly gang violence. This term can be used for any race, including whites, Asians and Hispanics. Unfortunately, a high percentage of people assigned that label are black but that term is hardly exclusive to black people. The principal that correlation is not causation applies here. Just because you see a lot of young black people called thugs doesn't mean that word is racist in itself. I'd call Aaron Hernandez a thug and he was Puerto Rican-Italian. I've called Bill Laimbeer a thug for how he played the game with an intent to injure players. Being a thug has nothing to do with color of skin.

Sorry, just because people don't like being called something doesn't mean we redefine the word to make it taboo. At least we shouldn't do that.

By definition, it's not a racist term, but it has absolutely become a stand-in for a different word.

And as a society we constantly redefine words to make them taboo. This isn't a new development in our language. Once the connotation changes, we often abandon the use of that word.
Maybe take this line of discussion somewhere else.

Zion Williamson (hamstring) is "not close" to returning, per ESPN's Brian Windhorst.

It has been over two months since Zion suited up for the Pelicans, and it may be a while longer. Previous reports suggested that Zion would miss multiple weeks after the All-Star break, but Windhorst's report makes Zion's chances of helping out fantasy managers this season very slim. Trey Murphy should continue to start for a Pelicans team that is slowly falling out of the playoff picture.

Since Jokmas (December 15th - celebrating the day the Jokic became the full time starting center for the Nuggets in 2017), the Nuggets are #1 in net rating, #4 in offense (their Ortg has been steady but the Kings, Knicks, and Sixers have been on fire and are #1-3, respectively), and #5 on defense (behind the Grizz, Bucks, Cavs, and Celtics). Their net rating is +7.0, Ortg is 119.7, and Drtg is 112.7.

Against the top 10 teams in that span (by net rating), they are #2 in net rating (+5.2), #3 in offense (119.0), and #4 in defense (#113.7).

In the clutch this season, their net rating is by far the best in the NBA @ +24.5 with a Drtg of 92.7 and Ortg of 117.2. There is always sample size issues with clutch play BUT I do think it speaks to the fact that the team does increase their defensive effort when it matters most, especially Jokic.

I'm starting to really buy into them as a championship threat. The only two teams that pose an issue in the west, IMO, are a healthy Warriors (which is more theory than reality at this point) and the Suns if they can figure out their 5th starter and some semblance of defense. In the east, the Bucks and Celtics may be better teams, but neither matches up particularly well with Denver as they can't take advantage of their weakness (PnR defense).

Pretty crazy to think Oden's entire NBA career was 105 games.

Zion's been an MVP candidate caliber player when he's been able to play. He's yet to even hit the big money in his new contract.

Sorry Frosty. Embiid was in a mood yesterday. Will be interesting if the Sixers can keep this wave of good play for a way to enter the playoffs

Are there no laws in Colorado related to being intoxicated and waving a gun around in a strip club? That seems against the law-y to me.

Memphis Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant will not face criminal charges stemming from his Instagram Live video in which he appeared to display a handgun at a nightclub, the Glendale, Colorado, Police Department announced Wednesday afternoon.

The Glendale police conducted an investigation after being alerted to the video, determining that the incident took place at a strip club called Shotgun Willie's early Saturday morning, hours after Memphis' loss to the Denver Nuggets, but that there "was not enough available evidence to charge anyone with a crime," according to a news release.

"GPD was not able to determine that probable cause existed for the filing of any charges," the news release stated, in part. "In this case, it should be noted that on the night in question the GPD did not receive any calls for service at the nightclub regarding a weapon of any type. Subsequently, no disturbances were reported, and no citizens or patrons of the club came forward to make a complaint. The investigation also concluded that no one was threatened or menaced with the firearm and in fact no firearm was ever located."

Even crazier is all the wasted talent in that era of Blazers basketball.

- Oden
- Aldridge
- Batum
- Brandon Roy
- They even got a young Dame for his first 3 years of that era

Obviously they could never get on the court at the same time. Hella lot of talent they got little from.

Greg Oden
I just saw him yesterday at MSG for the Big East Tournament. He’s one of Thad Motta’s assistants with DePaul.
Guy looks almost the same he looked in college - although he looked like an old man then.
Thad is coaching again?! I had no idea. Last I heard he was doing some admin work at Butler I thought. Glad to hear his back is well enough to coach again!

Fred Van Vleet saying something many of us have been thinking in a nice and direct manner.
What is the fix? Just fire them after a bad game? 2-3-5 bad games? You wouldn't have any officials left because they are human and have bad days.

The most frustrating thing about being a referee is the completely unreasonable expectations placed on you. You have to be technically sound, in shape, take verbal abuse without responding in kind (imagine a ref talking and acting like players and coaches do toward them?!), be a rules expert, have good judgement on grey areas and have the vision of an eagle no matter what angle you have.

Quite frankly the public discourse is ridiculous. No other profession gets this level of scrutiny from the very bottom ranks (try watching a poor teenager try to ref a youth league) all the way to the top from people who have never even attempted to actually do the job. Again, millions of people who have never stepped foot onto a field or court to officiate are experts in how the job should be done and feel justified in loudly and sometimes rudely critiquing the job that is being done. It's quite frankly complete crap. The reason the league cracks down so hard is because this stuff like Fred Van Vleet is doing is personal and filters down to the little kids leagues.

I hope he doesn't just get fined, I hope he gets suspended. If Ben Taylor said one word in the public to defend himself, he would be fired instantly. The double standards that get applied to officials is quite ridiculous.

He’s currently the HC of Butler.

I have officiated at a reasonably high level (JuCo) and coached at a high level.

You've built an impressive straw man. It's not about a bad game or not. It's about how crazy it is that some of the patterns are so clear and so persistent, that the same guys can have it out for some players, coaches, or teams, that some patterns are clear to the point of gambling exploitability, and yet the league doesn't seem to do anything to address it.

If I were truly designing it, I'd be rotating significantly more refs through, and you'd have rotations as training others, as reviewing games, and of actually reffing. And I'd have cool off periods, maybe even up to years, of actually reffing NBA games. For some of the exact reasons you bring up, they are human.

Thats funny because I think the "refs suck" schtick has run its course, yet here we are...again.

I wouldn't say the Blazers WASTED the talent - they certainly got the most out of Aldridge before he bolted. His final year was probably one of the better teams Portland assembled around him, but when Wes Matthews ruptured his Achilles, they never found a good replacement and got bounced in the first round. Matthews was a key player on that team.

Oden, he just never could stay on the court. That first microfracture surgery before he ever played an NBA set him back permanently. He lacked the maturity to rehab it properly and I think he had horrible guidance. Rumors are he hurt that knee playing Dance Dance Revolution and honestly, I buy it.

Roy gave the city of Portland everything he had, but he just destroyed his knees in the process. Bone on bone the last few years of his career. He's battled depression over it; honestly one of the most popular guys to ever play here, the city loves him. It's sad. The whole thing is sad.

Dame took the Blazers to the Western Conference Finals. That's about as good as it's ever going to get here. This city will never land a marquee free agent and it's just impossible to retain talent through the draft. See Aldridge - he couldn't wait to leave Portland. The weather sucks during the season, the taxes are among the highest in the NBA and there's a miniscule population of African Americans here. I hate to say that, but it's a big factor in why this city can't compete with other teams for free agents or player retention.

Yeah, he had that Otis Nixon face thing going on. I ran into him at a bar (surprise) and was just astonished at how large he is. He certainly looks like he could dominate on the court.

I assume everyone in here has watched Flagrant Foul on Netflix?
I have not. What is the gist of it?

Untold: Operation Flagrant Foul

Years after serving time for betting on games he officiated, former NBA referee Tim Donaghy revisits the scandal that shook up the league.
watched this and listened to him on a couple podcasts

guy comes off as a bit of an exaggerator. hard to say what exactly is real. interesting stuff, but i'm on the fence about the things he claims.

have you read Breaks of the Game?

Halberstam talks about Walton's feet being so poorly constructed that it was essentially a miracle he could run or jump at all. i wonder if Oden had something similar whereby his body just wasn't designed to do the things he needed to play basketbal.

You're actually right. I remember years ago during his playing days hearing about that they found one leg was shorter than the other.

Great article here about the pitfalls of his body.

Still sweating, Oden explains that when he was in sixth grade, he grew so volcanically -- 6 inches in less than a year -- that his right hip detached from its socket. After surgery to place two pins in the joint, Oden enjoyed swinging his gangly legs on crutches down the hallways at school. But though the procedure worked, it left his right leg 8 millimeters shorter than his left. He walked with a bit of a dip, leaving people to assume that he was strutting, acting hard. Over time, his body adjusted, but the hip required the occasional heavy tug when it jammed.

I read about 100 pages of it and realized I'd never finish it. I'm not a very strong reader. I do own a copy, so might try and finish it off. Yeah, Oden apparently had some big warnings signs around his legs that the Blazers' medical staff didn't seem overly concerned with at the time. Oh well. It's not the guys drafted behind him ever did anything noteworthy.
