Make peace with your gods if the Eagles' secondary plays like this next week. Jefferson might put up 200+ yards.
Jonathan Gannon and the defense are my top concern going into week 2.Make peace with your gods if the Eagles' secondary plays like this next week. Jefferson might put up 200+ yards.![]()

Do you think the soft Training Camp had anything to do with it? The Defense, especially the front 4, looked gassed in the 2nd half. Maybe just not in football shape? I agree, they looked pretty good the 1st half, minus the initial drive.I'm not sure what happened to our defense. Did we just get figured out?
First drive was bad of course, but mainly from Swift's one big run.
Defense DID pitch a shutout for TWENTY straight minutes in the first half. That's 1/3rd of the game, with zero points allowed. And then it all just crashed down.
Wonder how many passing yards Goff had in the first half... I can't imagine it was many. Just a total 4th quarter meltdown.
The biggest issue with Gannon's defense is that it doesn't represent the city. We want to get after the offense and dictate what the offense runs, not read and react all day long.
NOOOOOOOODamn Barnett gone with an ACL.
Out 6-8 weeks, we play DAL at home on SNF in 5 weeks. Turns that from a “Eagles can prove they are for real” game to a “chance to pile up another early season win” game.Sucks for Dak, super unfortunate. We are likely the favourites in the division now.

I'm trying not to overreact to week 1, but Gannon is not impressing me, at all. The Eagles have too much talent to let a young, scrappy team with Jared f'ing Goff at QB stay in a game like this and score 35.
Damn Barnett gone with an ACL.
Seriously, where do you come up with this ****?Also karma is a you know what. All these DAL "fans" celebrating every year Wentz got hurt.

I would have just liked the post, because it’s spot on. I gave you love for the new thread title.Thoughts from yesterday:
- Hurts needs to improve on blitz identification and calling hot routes
- Refs need to start calling all the hits Hurts takes at the end of scrambles when he is clearly sliding/giving himself up, and not just when he gets a helmet targeting his head like the one they finally called, multiple other times they were putting not as bad but still illegal/unnecessary hits on him
- Gannon’s idea of being a defensive coordinator seems to be to just expect his front four to be good enough to generate pressure one-on-one. Never schemes or disguises anything to HELP that happen; in the run game, again, he assumes the players will do everything, had success with the 5 man fronts for a bit but never stuck with it
- After’s Brown’s 50+ yard catch in the last minute of the half, why didn’t Sirianni call a timeout?? Got to the 5, so first and goal, 2 TO’s. Call 1 to let your guys get downfield and catch their breath before taking shots at the EZ. Even if you run once, call the last TO then throws into the EZ do you can still kick a FG.

Agree with this take. A few times a rusher just came free unblocked *immediately* and he still was able to gain 5, 6 7 yards. I think this offense is going to be explosive all year long. Really want to see Devonta more involved, but we got a lot more football left!I judged Hurts too harshly watching this game live. He had a good game- and a really good mental game. He still needs to work on a lot, and he probably does have a lower ceiling than we want from a true franchise QB, but he was really solid yesterday.
Sunday, I felt like he ran too much. I watched the all-22, and I am no analyst, but there were only 2 plays I saw where he took off and ran when there were legit options open. Out of 17 runs, 3 were kneel downs, 1 was a QB sneak and 5-6 were either designed runs or QB options. 5 were plays where the pressure was there immediately and he had no one open. And he was smart with the football- aside from getting away with intentional grounding on a play.
He really played a much more solid game than I thought, and showed a lot of growth. Sorry, @DJackson10
Brian Baldinger gave Hurts high praise after watching the All-22 tape. Basically credited him with saving the game for them.I judged Hurts too harshly watching this game live. Where did you find Baldy's breakdown? I looked on youtube this morning, but there was nothing. His twitter account. I saw it posted on FB last night.Where did you find Baldy's breakdown? I looked on youtube this morning, but there was nothing. I love watching him break down film.
i kind of think the blitz pick-ups fall on the OL as well. i just watched the Baldy breakdown and it seems to capture it well. i also think Jalen really should get more credit for his low number of turnovers. we will see how the season goes, but i think i like the game like Sunday with 1 maybe 2 TD passes, vs the 3-4 TD games with 2-3 turnoversThoughts from yesterday:

True, and you’ll be happy to know Steichen, in his press conference today, said they did ok with blitz pickupi kind of think the blitz pick-ups fall on the OL as well.

Agree, but still plenty of concerns about his passing decisions and passing ability:I judged Hurts too harshly watching this game live. He had a good game- and a really good mental game. yeah, i still can't figure out why Gannon gets interviews for Head Coach. sure he seems friendly with the media, etc., but i still am not sure what value he bringsTrue, and you’ll be happy to know Steichen, in his press conference today, said they did ok with blitz pickupi kind of think the blitz pick-ups fall on the OL as well.
Not to be outdone in the category of gaslighting, Gannon said the DL alignment and spacing was fine and he was happy with the pressure they got![]()
i think we will know more after Monday. they were up 17 for quite a bit on Sunday, they won't be able to be conservative with the ball in this gameAgree, but still plenty of concerns about his passing decisions and passing ability:I judged Hurts too harshly watching this game live. Some of that was obviously bad pass protection, but still needs to find sweet spot between taking those quick dump offs (or tucking and running) and using his legs to buy time for receivers to get open for big plays or, at least, shots down the field.
- 25 of his 29 pass attempts (not counting throw aways) traveled less than 10 yards
- 4 of those went 0 yards because they were batted down; he had 17 batted down all of last year
- 3 passes were thrown 10-19 yards and 1 went 20+ (to AJ Brown)

Yeah, I don't take that as a knock, at all. That's why I said I am no analyst. I know enough to know that I don't even know what I don't know. I'd pay a decent amount to have access to coaches' tape with a breakdown from someone who does have that expertise.I judged Hurts too harshly watching this game live. I just want to point out something and this isn't a knock on you or others. There's what fans consider open and then theres what NFL Coaches and league people see as open. Give this tape to the evaluators and they will probably find 2-3 plays at least he had guys "NFL Open" that he should've thrown too instead of the decision he made. Again this isn't a knock on you just putting out there a misconception people have. My Cousin coaches at Saint Joe's Prep and anytime I have the privilege of reviewing film with him there's plenty of times I don't consider something open but he tells me differently. I've watched a few games where the color guy is a former ex NFL player saying things like "This play right here fans might call me crazy saying this guy is open but in the NFL thats a throw he'll have to make and is considered open that many NFL QBs consistently make." Will Levis during the UK/UF game had one of these throws where Greg McElroy said something along the lines of "That was a great throw and one he'll make on Sundays. I know some fans might not like that throw but NFL coaches consider that an open receiver and if he missed that in the read he'd have been chewed out on it when he got back to the bench by his coaches."
Just figured I mentioned that since its a misconception fans have and some analyst as well.
I'm sure there were at least 2 or 3. But how many QBs in week 1 didn't have 2 or 3 plays they missed? How many other QBs would have taken sacks for big loses or thrown an INT on 3rd long instead of picking up the first down with their legs?Give this tape to the evaluators and they will probably find 2-3 plays at least he had guys "NFL Open" that he should've thrown too instead of the decision he made.
A lot (most?) of the young QBs coming into the league can run. Trevor Lawrence was supposed to be the next big thing, but he can't run and has a sub 60% completion percentage with 5 more INTs than TDs.With how the QB position has been changing over the years. I feel like it's the death of the dropback QB.
Even in 4A high school football in my area, almost all teams are running spread from the gun. Whereas just a few years ago many programs were running a version of the Wing-T.
It's a small sample size but if you can't run you don't play QB anymore.
Hurts IMO is a modern-day QB.
Make peace with your gods if the Eagles' secondary plays like this next week. Jefferson might put up 200+ yards.![]()
They weren't that bad. Goff just captain Checkdowned them and Gannon took the foot off the gas after series 2-5.

Agreed, and he was a #1 overall pick. This idea that if Hurts doesn't improve enough they can just draft our QB of the future next year isn't guaranteed. We could end up with something far worse than Jalen Hurts and set the team back years.Lawrence is so overrated. for years we hear how hes this generational talent. looks average to below average in the league so far to me. would much rather have Jalen.

Did we see how bad Russell Wilson looked Monday night? A lot of fans wanted him here.

I don’t think I’ve ever felt less pumped about a Week 1 win. Hopefully the D makes some strides next week, they’ll need to.
I don't think he's a finished product yet 20 games into his career. But I've heard many pundits praise his decision making (much quicker) and how he basically saved the game for the Eagles, including Baldy.Your missing the point I was making. A lot of fans will say he only missed this or that guy that was open. However the definition of What NFL people and players deem open is pretty different to what fans actually think is open. My 2-3 plays was purely example. My point on the missed plays is it seems Hurts doesn't even trust his arm enough to make those plays or at least attempt them and that's concerning
The No. 13 overall pick out of Georgia played 22 defensive snaps (32%) against the Lions and made the most of his opportunities -- recording a pair of tackles, including a stuff. The Eagles were gashed on the ground to the tune of 181 yards on 28 carries (6.5 average) but did not appear as vulnerable when Davis was on the field controlling blockers and reshaping the line of scrimmage. He earned more playing time going forward, starting Monday night against the Vikings. -- Tim McManus
