2022 Philadelphia Eagles - Leave Gannon in Arizona and let’s run through the NFC again in 2023. (5 Viewers)

Carson Strong and Jason Huntley cut. Could see Huntely through to the PS. They gave Strong an enormous $320k to sign as an UDFA and word from camp is that they overpaid by $320k.

He was that bad? I was wondering why he barely got any game time
I'd love to know what happened with Strong. Everything I read was that his knee was the only reason he wasn't drafted, but the Eagles coaches didn't seem to have any interest in using him. Either there is a disconnect between Howie and the coaches or he wasn't nearly as good in camp as he looked in college.

He sucks

It's pretty simple. It's mostly sec. If not they probably suck

I'd gotten out of the habit of checking in here the last couple of seasons, but really looking forward to the games this year. Aside from seeing the Eagles win, couple of things I'm really interested in checking out this year:

  • Target distribution. Players, not plays please. Focus on Brown, Smith and Goedert, with the odd sprinkle of Quez and Pascal. Stop forcing targets because of "matchups". Just throw the ball to the guys who'll do something with it. The barometer for this to me is YAC plays. All 3 of the main targets are good at it, so let's see it.
  • Hurts; I don't want to see him stop scrambling and taking downfield shots, but I do want to see a much higher proportion of on time, accurate throws to move the chains.
  • How the front 7 looks with new pieces. Specifically, how they use Reddick and Davis. You can play 2 high with cushion, but not without a pass rush. I'm hoping some creative deployment of Reddick (and overall improvement in Y2) will change the complexion of the defence, by forcing quicker throws, and not have us picked apart by any above average QB.

And I hope they find a way to keep Reed Blankenship and Devon Allen. I'll be salty if the keep 3 SAMs too. We learned last year the role itself doesn't contribute much without the right player. We can call this the "Genard Avery Principle".

It's hard to tell from TV angles how Blankenship is performing in coverage, but he just looks like a player. Aside from the big TD catch, Allen showed some potential as a gunner and that's worth something.

People were saying based on reps he had essentially should've never signed him. Thought it was strange at open practice with Hurts out Stinnent and Gardner took most of the reps and Strong barely got any

Well, it certainly fills a need. Do we know what Philly gave up?
5th and a 6th to NO for CGJ and a 7th.

He’s in last year of rookie deal so if we don’t extend him, getting back a 4th or 5th comp pick could be a possibility.

I don't think they make this move without knowing they are resigning him though or have a good chance

Saints really wanted to get rid of him apparently. Could have gotten a 3rd or 4th comp pick for keeping him one year and letting him walk, so there must be some reason they jettisoned him a year earlier for less compensation.

"Never act like you’re bigger than the game when it comes to contract talks with the Saints. Agree or not, they’ve shown time and time again they won’t respond the way you want in that scenario. They don’t tolerate it.

Love the player, he wasn’t the best in the business as he thought, but he was such a weapon for our team. Hard to replace, but it is what it is. Good luck in Philly"

"Drafted his replacement. Looks like the FO saw where this was headed months ago."

Smart perspective, especially knowing how the Saints do business. No overpayments. Mickey Loomis draws a hard line.

Eagles got a very good player, though. Physically, he's not damaged goods or anything like that.

Hopefully he's motivated to show he's a stud for a big pay day or maybe Eagles lock him up on a decent contract.

Where are you seeing that. Per Saints reporters they seemed more like they weren't resigning him as they got cap issues and wanted something for him instead of letting him go for free

CeeDee started acting out of pocket. Team has zero tolerance to that. He was being disruptive and refusing to talk to coaches

Per Nick Underhill

I've learned to take these sort of things with a grain of salt when first reported. At least until others are confirming it. This was the biggest issue with the Wentz stuff in Philly I realized. Some of the stuff on Wentz was never confirmed by others just regurgitating what was said. For example the whole Doug and him not close anymore was very far fetched. One of my customers is neighbors with one of the lead writers for the team who works at a major network. Basically said a lot of the Wentz stuff was taken out of context including a report he did that people made it seem Wentz got in a fight in the locker room which wasn't true.

So I usually take these things with a grain of salt. Being in the wrestling industry as well you learn some people have agendas and some stuff is udder BS and someone trying to talk their guy up or talk **** on someone else. I don't know this reporter well enough either way. But I do know a few Florida people who can most likely confirm or deny this and haven't seen any of them mention anything on this yet.

Gardner-Johnson can get in the backfield some too. He's recorded 15 TFLs, including 12 QB hits. Eagles have some defensive players who can create a lot of TFL's now. Additions of Dean, Davis and Reddick along with Graham back and CJ now

Howie Roseman Defensive rebuild this offseason:

LB Haason Reddick CB James Bradberry CB/S Chauncey Gardner-Johnson LB Kyzir White DT Jordan Davis (Round 1) LB Nakobe Dean (Round 3) DE Brandon Graham returning from injury

They don't have cap issues at all at this point. He wanted to be paid like Marshon Lattimore. He is an outstanding nickel. He is far from a top CB in the league. He does have that swagger you want on the team, but Saints have plenty of depth.

He's more of a Safety then CB so he wanted to be paid.

agree

This may sound silly, but id love to see like 5-10 more attempts per game. Hurts Y/A and Y/C is aligned with Aaron Rodgers (~7 and ~12 respectfully). Big difference is total attempts and completion percentage. While it would be easier to say "work on completion percentage", id like to see more attempts first, then go from there.

Should also be noted that CGJ played (and excelled) in Todd Grantham’s system at Florida that utilized a lot of the split coverage concepts Gannon uses. His college film may be a window into his fit as well. CGJ could very well be used similar to how the Eagles used Malcom Jenkins with Schwartz

As a Saints fan it sucks to lose him but he wants $12 million/YR and for our Nickle back that's not happening. Y'all will enjoy him rustling the other teams jimmie:lol:

Howie Roseman has to be the most liked GM in the league. Not sure who is most hated, but you don't do THIS many deals for GREAT value without most of your peers enjoying you as a person. Underrated trait of Howie has to be his likeability. Teams line up every year to hook our team up b/c Howie Roseman is a sweetheart.

Yet he couldn’t beat out Malcom Jenkins or Marcus Maye

CJGJ wasn't in competition for a starting spot with either of them (well, maybe Jenkins in pre-season 2019). Gardner-Johnson has been the starting nickel/slot CB in the Saints' base 4-2-5 defense. He was also good in run defense, lining up in the box in traditional rushing-down situations.

That is one thing the Eagles do need to think about, though -- what role do they want CJGJ to fill. He might be able to walk right in and start as a traditional SS or FS ... but the Saints have never asked him to do that for more than a few plays here and there. He excelled in his slot/nickel/rover role in the Saints' base. Let's see how that translates to another team's scheme. I'm sure the Saints aren't the only team to run a 5-DB base ... don't know if the Eagles do or not.
