2022 Winter Olympics (1 Viewer)

I know the Olympics in general don't have the draw they once did. But I love international competitions.  Opening ceremonies broadcast Friday evening on NBC.  Figured I'd make a thread even if it ends up not much used.

I always look forward to the hockey so will be recording some of it:

US Women's hockey (broadcast on USA)
Thursday 7am  Finland
Sat 7am  Russia
Sun 7am Switzerland
Monday 10pm Canada
Playoffs Friday, Sat, Monday, Thursday (gold medal game)

US Men's hockey (no NHL so let down)
Thursday Feb 10 7am China
Friday Feb 11 10pm Canada
Sunday 7am Germany
Playoffs Tuesday Feb 15, Wed-Friday, Saturday (gold medal game)

Curling is always fun and starts out this Wednesday before the opening ceremonies.  Like various skiing events plus the pipe skiing and snowboarding.  Never really been too big on the figure skating unless a skater catches my eye.

I still love the winter olympics and try to watch all I can. (except for the figure skating crap and I still watch some of that because the wife likes it) I am disappointed no NHL in hockey this year. Seems that sets up the Russians even though they aren't the Russians right now.

Kinda BS imo that the British mens curling team is really just the Scottish mens team. If they win, the medal should go to Scotland.

The US men are heavy underdogs to defend their gold medal performance from Korea. Good news is the men are once again captained by John Schuster and both Matt and Becca Hamilton will be there for the USA.

Woo-hoo!  I miss @MikeIkeand The Sizzler, whom I can no longer @, from the last thread.  Excited for curling, of course, plus anything that looks terrifying such as skeleton and luge, plus short-track speed skating, plus all the skiing and snowboarding, plus sports I never otherwise see like biathlon, plus pretty much everything else other than figure skating.

Apparently I told Mr. krista so frequently over the last few months that "the Olympics start February 3" that it's now become a joke, and he tells me at least twice a day that the Olympics are coming.

I wish they had the winter events in the summer and vice versa with the summer events when it's sweltering hot.  Too darn cold now for this old timer to completely enjoy. ;)

I see the women have added the Monobob event to Olympic bobsledding this year. It’s probably like luge or skeleton only slightly less insane. I’m in.

Mixed doubles curling starts this Wednesday, a day before the opening ceremony. It’s like having a taste of dessert before the main course. Unfortunately, team HamFam will not be repping the USA in mixed doubles in Beijing this year.

What’s the best way to watch?  I have fubo and I record the nbc prime time to watch with the wife. But I suppose I need peacock or some such nonsense to see the fringe events?

All the NBC networks will carry various parts:

NBC
NBC Sports
Olympic Channel
CNBC
USA
Golf Channel

USA has a lot of it live. That's where all the US hockey games are.  Saw some Curling in the channel guide too.

I'll watch almost any of the Winter Games sports, and I love figure skating so suck it.  I also love biathlon and the cross-country events.

Curling rocks!

My son is currently a local sports writer in Park City. So he's been covering some of the locals who are competing in moguls, luge, and speedskating.

Ken Pomeroy who does kenpom college hoops analytics is not going to the Olympics but he IS s huge curling enthusiast.

@Parkrecord: When the college hoops guru, who lives in Salt Lake City, isn’t analyzing which teams are primed for a run to the Final Four, Ken Pomeroy makes the trek to Park City to partake in a different passion: curling. Here's why: https://bit.ly/3Eu5H0v https://twitter.com/Parkrecord/status/1475541997360275459/photo/1

Reminds me of the Ryder Cup. I think almost all of Europe’s guys live in Florida
Yes, but at least in golf, those people were actually born in the countries that they were playing for. In the Olympics, you get a lady that was raised in Salt Lake City and now lives in Atlanta competing for team Austria because her ancestors are from there.

Oh wow. Yeah that’s ….. odd

"The problem with Scotland...is that it's full of Scots."

If you watch the back stories, half the competitors are Americans anyways.

The Great Britain Men's curling team is literally the Scottish team that finished second (to Sweden) in the 2021 world championships competing as Scotland - to the man. They are all Scottish. Great Britain in the Olympics is all of the UK plus Northern Ireland and several of the other overseas territories. I find it odd, but particularly so in this case I guess. They are expected to challenge for gold.

... or you get a case like Yvonne Anderson - was coached by a Serb in the Turkish women's pro league, then was asked by said coach to play for Serbia in Tokyo, though Anderson is from Arkansas, and has zero ties to Serbia other than knowing the coach.

after some paperwork, etc., she became a naturalized Serb, and WAAALLLLAAA!

OLYMPIAN!

:lmao:

I've loved the Olympics since I was a kid and watch almost all the events but I will not be watching these Games and supporting the host nation.

I hope our athletes stay safe.

I'm kind of with you.  It just feels wrong.

I may still watch some stuff, but I'm not super excited about it.

I love the winter and summer olympics.

I've always been drawn to the speed skating more than I should.  I'm also a big fan of figure skating.  :bag:

Quick question, with no NHL, is it college athletes skating for the US a la Miracle on Ice?

I honestly don't know where they are being held at this moment.  Watch what you love and support the athletes.  Depriving yourself only means that said host country wins as the horse are already in the barn (TV contracts set).  The host nation is losing huge money on this event.  I'd suggest watching and saying suck it host nation...thanks for paying for me to watch good sporting events.

In the background she did have some accolades from other competitions.  Would love to here the full story, but may have been just posting a score to make the finals after a bunch of other people crashed.

The best way to watch is IPTV and watch the foreign feeds.  Far too many fluff pieces instead of showing the events shown in the US.  Combining with no NHL and this being held in China , watching little of it.

Always my favorite event of the first week. Despite the fact my favorite nephew and oldest child both captained their Curling Club at their respective Upper Peninsula universities, I still have to relearn the rules, scoring and terminology every four years.

:nerd:

Great Britain is the island with England, Scotland and Wales.  The UK includes Northern Ireland (full name being "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland").  They should be competing under "United Kingdom" if they have people from outside England/Scotland/Wales.

The overseas territories are also not technically part of the UK (per Wikipedia).

An explanation for you.

I won't watch much of it either but I get  annoyed when I want to watch a great Dateline episode (or local news) and NBC is shoving Olympics down our throat 24/7.
