Not really.
There is a good chance he will end up with the Jets, though.
Bell was a Jets fan as a youth. The Jets have a lot of salary cap room and do not have a clear #1 RB.
Eli McGuire is a very patient runner like Bell. I can envision this tandem as a sensible one.
I don't like paying RBs top money but the Jets are going to have the salary cap space. If the Jets frontload the contract it could work. I am more concerned that Bell has been out of football for a year but one would have to think he'd be in football shape by August.

Yes Bowles doesn't sit there watching tv, but he is the manager of everything on that field.
Potential reasons for not challenging: 1) The person responsible couldn't determine if that should be challenged - well they had plenty of time to review the play and it was clear on the replay that it was a first down 2) Bowles and that person didn't communicate for some reason or 3) Bowles decided that it wasn't worth challenging.
If we believe that it's because of #1, Bowles is ultimately responsible since that guy reports to Bowles. If it's 2 or 3, then it's also his responsibility. The beauty of being a manager is that you are responsible for the people that work for you and everything that happens under your management.
Don't worry, you won't have to defend Bowles for much longer.

I also am concerned about Mac - especially with the OL....he seems to be of that old school philosophy that you can find OL without drafting high and spending big $....stud LTs simply dont make it to FA and are rarely found outside of the 1st 2 rds....protecting Sam is by far the most important piece this offseason and besides the #1 pick I dont see other options.
The case against Mac returning is strong - besides some decent trades his draft and FA record has been terrible....all you have to do is ask what players do you feel are indispensable....I have 2 - Sam and Adams...both no brainer picks that this forum could have made.....after 4 yrs that is simply unacceptable.
Another argument is keeping Mac continues the dysfunctional set up and creates another Idzick/Rex situation as if they have another bad yr and MAc gets fired they will keep the HC so the never ending cycle continues....not to mention top tier HC's with experience will likely not want to work for a GM they dont know like Mac and would rather be a tandem with someone they are familiar - they cant let that happen and lose quality candidates over Mac....
So which HC candidates get you excited? I have minimal to no interest.....Harbaughs and McCarthy are the best of the HC retreads...perhaps a dip into the college coaches. Maybe Cleveland keeps Williams and JEts can make a play for Lincoln Riley...that would be a big splash.

I'm not totally enamored with big bucks to a RB either, but in this case, someone like Bell can really help Darnold. It does make sense.

Not sure today could have gone too much better. Sam played great but the team was undisciplined and choked, (and got a few not so friendly calls, leading to a loss and a better draft spot) making it even more likely that Bowles is gone. (not that it wasnt 90% already, but you never know)
Trumaine just can't be counted on. Hopefully they can get out of that one without too much of a hit at some point in the next year or two. Just another hit against McCagnan.

Well, I am officially sold on Sam. The last three games he has played like a poised veteran and has consistently shown skills he only showed in flashes earlier this season. The sky is truly the limit once they (hopefully) add some playmakers on offense.
Herndon was a diamond in the rough and I must give Mac credit for selecting him. He could emerge as a top 5 TE in this league and be a great weapon for Sam - another player that can only benefit by adding some talent to the offense.
Robby Anderson has stepped up his game but I think that's more a product of Darnold playing so well and him being the only legit WR available. He'd be a fine WR2/3, but I don't want him continuing as the default WR1, as he just is not complete enough.
This may be one of the biggest off-seasons in Jet history as the window for Sam Darnold on his rookie deal will close before you know it. We have to take advantage of it.

The 2 biggest things on a team is QB and Head Coach....I honestly think they have a franchise QB who will lead this team for a long time.....the next stop is a top HC but that may be difficult....I like that Im hearing they are going big game hunting but just dont see Jim Harbaugh leaving Michigan or ny of the top college HCs going to the Jets...so that realistically leaves retreads like McCarthy, Arians, Shannahan, etc - maybe a surprise firing like Tomlin would be great but there is no Parcells out there to save them....
I've said my piece on Mac....I think he should go and start fresh....I am not seeing this happening so may be stuck with some dysfunction there - besides Sam and Adams (both no brainers) and Herndon I dont see many hits on Mac...think he even leads the league on players out of the the NFL drafted last 4 yrs - thats unacceptable for a guy with a scouting background. His Free Agent signings have been terrible outside of Williamson.....
Love Herndon - loved him since camp when I saw him making crazy catches - he should be the best Jet TE in a long time and give Sam a much needed big target to grow with
Agree on Anderson - definitely looks better but someone has to catch passes....I agree he is a much better 2/3 along with Quincy - I would bring them both back on reasonable deals but stil need to find a stud #1 WR that is not available in FA....maybe they can pry an overpaid one for one of their 3rd rders.
Super Bowls are won on rookie contracts - HUGE offseason to find a coach and players to make that run....praying they dont waste it

This would be my preference but since I'm 99% sure Mac is coming back I'm doing my best to give him the benefit of the doubt. Also I'm not sure who is available out there that would be a slam dunk choice for GM anyway.
I'll settle for knowing Bowles is as good as gone and hope Mac makes the right choice there.

Its a dumb reporting line....the HC should report to and be chosen by then GM - you cant have an owner who knows minimal about football being the tiebreaking vote on important matters....
As for Sunday - looks like they are locked in to a worse case of the 5th pick....if they lose worst case is 3rd with a decent shot at 2d and longshot at #1 if Cards pull off a miracle......we posted a lot about tanking last year - I agonized over meaningless wins with 38 yr old McCown a the helm and needing a franchise QB....some of those meaningless wins cost them valuable 2d rd picks....whats done is done and they got their QB so going into Pats land with a chance to knock them out of a bye and get Sam a valuable win in a playoff like atmosphere away at a division rival is worth more than the few draft spots in my opinion....so ill be rooting for a win with an immediate press conference Sun pm to announce Bowles firing....I just hope they do it quick and dont drag it out due to new years.....

I need to see the details, but early reports are 4 years, $20M guaranteed and up to $36m. I like Q, but anything more than $4-5m is insane for a guy always hurt.
If they let McCags make this deal now, that might mean he is coming back next year. Sigh.

Not a great free agent class and a ton of money, kinda makes sense.. but he can’t stay on the field.... so I can see it both ways.. still I kinda like having him here as another guy for sam...

2 things I dont like about this deal and both mentioned -
1. Looks like Mac is staying
2. if its 4 yrs/$36 mil that is an avg over $8M per yr which is pretty darn high for a guy who has spent 2 yrs on the sidelines.....they are banking on him being healthy and delivering #2 WR numbers for that
Think Anderson is a RFA where Quincy was an UFA so they can just tender Anderson at 1st rd price and see if he is better off field and how he is next yr before offering long term deal....
Still gaping hole at #1 WR.

I don’t think Darnold looked bad. The line was atrocious and he was playing with a horrible collection of pass catchers. Cannon dropped a deep sideline pass that none of us would have dropped - he’s been a compete zero in the passing game. Robby Anderson was the only WR out there worth anything and the Pats did a tremendous job blanketing him.
I’ll admit Allen isn’t exactly working with the 2001 Rams skill players but the Dolphins defense gave up on the season. I wouldn’t want to trade Darnold for Allen by any means.

Allen had his worst game since coming back from injury against this same Pats team last week. Belichick makes rookie QBs look like rookies. No reason to overreact.

A good performance out of sam would have been awesome. But too much was stacked against him today.
My enthusiasm from the past 3 weeks hasn't diminished. He's moving in the right direction. Just needs some help and an actual coach.

Aside from our lack of talent, the next biggest issue was our coaching match-up. No way Bates could out-coach BB. Instead of taking advantage of NE's slug LBs, we ran right into the middle of their defense. We had no perimeter challenges, nothing that would have forced their LBs to cover with the exception of that pass that Cannon dropped. It was basically do the same thing time after time. Just awful. Sam needs talent around him and someone with a creative offensive mind.

Another tidbit I heard listening to Evan Roberts (Joe B was off but phoned in), was when Joe B was stressing how much he doesn’t want anything to do with the team signing Bell - Evan mentioned the Jets going after Leonard Fournette. He’s convinced the Jaguars will move on from him this offseason. The team announcing they were voiding the guarantees remaining on his contract indicate that that’s likely a very good possibility. I think he’d come much cheaper than Bell and him and McGuire would make a great tandem.

Wow that was ugly....in the last quarter I was actually cheering for them to keep handing the ball off so Sam wouldnt get hurt...the entire team didnt show up and thats when injuries happen....so glad they kept their draft spot and the kid got out clean with a valuable experience of having his butt kicked at Foxboro.....
The inevitable ax fell on Bowles but Mac stays - I dont think Mac deserves to stay and it will hurt their chances of getting a top coach so of course the Jets have to do it....I dont think there is any way in hell a solid coach would answer to Mac at this point so get ready for more up and coming coordinators (Bieniemy already contacted) or loser retreads like Caldwell (god no)....I dont see any of these options being good...I was hoping they would go big game hunting gunning for a Harbaugh or top college coach....it seems like they will be doing the same loser formula they have been doing for yrs....give 1st shot to someone with no experience...but they'll go offense this time.....I'm sorry but does anyone think the Chiefs are successful due to Bienemy or the Saints due to Campbell? He has college head coaching experience at Southern Miss although it's hard to say how that translates to the NFL.

Per Chris Johnson, Structure of organization will not change. HC will report directly to him. Heimerdinger and Maccagnan will spearhead HC search along with Johnson.

Definitely. They stripped him of his contract guarantees, so can be cut. He seems like a ##### though. Just a bad attitude lately and dumb as hell for running from the bench and getting thrown out for fighting. Then there was the fan incident although who really knows the story there.

Maybe I'm just jaded because he was my first round pick in both my fantasy leagues this year, but I dont want Fournette at all. I mean, the whole team had already quit, but even after he came back from the hamstring, he looked slow and disinterested.
Bell is a #### as well, but i do still think he's an elite talent (despite Connor's production this year). I dont think Fournette is.

yep this is a complete disaster....maybe this set up would work in some established teams but Chris Johnson having the final say on football matters is stupid and thats why the list of candidates is less than compelling....
I mean the Iowa State coach passed up on interviewing....all the optimism I had being slowly choked away

As far as Bell goes, I don't think that he's an elite talent. I think it's that offense. I think he would be decent on our team, but not worth $17m. I just don't think it's worth spending so much on a RB, especially later in his career.

So in last few hrs we learned that Mac a GM with an awful track record stays...Chris Johnson is not changing the reporting structure.....so now Mac is on hot seat and any HC candidate will be worrying about a new GM he doesnt know coming in next yr.....they were turned down for an interview by the Iowa State coach....Jim Caldwell seems to be the highest coach with experience on their interview list.....first timers abound that are completely uninspiring....and now add this gem: Johnson thinks he knows more than a pro bowl player....Im starting to drink early.....

There is just no way if Mac is involved in the process a guy like Harbaugh who will want some control of personnel decisions is going to be a real consideration. How can Mac want to bring in a guy that is going to challenge his authority and/or push for his exit?
