Free agent QB Christian Hackenberg visited the Patriots on Thursday.

With minicamp over, coach Bill Belichick is trolling the football world. The Patriots drafted a Hackenberg-ian talent in seventh-rounder Danny Etling. Hack would be a camp arm if he ended up in New England.
This story ends with Christian Hackenberg hoisting the Lomarbdi Trophy over his head after winning Super Bowl MVP.

training camp looming some random thoughts to wake up from slumber and things to watch in camp

QBs - Darnold - hearing good things so far....looking forward to seeing if he grabs the job and doesnt look back or if it will be a slower progress; Teddy - Id like to see him get #1 reps with Darnold and limit MCCown like last yr...it worked out just fine...let the youngsters try to seize the job and if not the old fella should be ready to go with limited reps.  If Teddy is healthy and looks good I'd love to see him showcased and flipped for a pick - has to be a 3rd or better or Id keep him.

RB - rumblings of Powell on the bubble....Im not sure why they dont like this guy - sure he gets dinged up a bit but has put up some monster games, is reliable and cheap....Im fine with Crowell/Powell with some Maguire

WR - Excited to see Enuwa back - he was the de facto TE and was breaking out before the injury...if he can stay healthy he's a big upgrade - Pryor looks like he cant stay healthy....only good buzz is Hanson as Steart looks like another 3rd rd whiff so far

OL - Ill be really looking at this in TC - if they look awful I think twice about putting the kid back there too soon...let them gel for a few weeks...#1 offseason priority....

TE - still shaking head at why the let ASJ go for so cheap....Leggett and the rook battle out but see this as a wasteland again

DL - no passrusher so will need Leo to be much better this season at getting to the QB -

LB - looking to see how much the loss of Davis hurts - Lee needs to take another step - especially in coverage and shking off blocks

DB - If the CBs stay healthy and rookie Safeties continue ti develop this could be a very good group....

Coaches - il be watching Bates closely - he didnt help HAck much but seems like he was a lost cause....I think Bates has making of a HC if he can develop Darnold and call a good game....Chris Johnson seems pretty patient so unless its a complete awful season I think Bowles is safe with a 6-7 win season which should be easily possible unless they go with he kid and he has bad growing pains.

Good summary.

I agree that their lack of enthusiasm for Powell has always been baffling. What good would releasing him do? He's cheap and productive and it's not like they have a bunch of young guys behind him that he'd be keeping off the field.

I'm in the camp that I would like to see Darnold on the sidelines for the first couple of weeks unless he really blows the other guys away. Their o-line could really do so damage to a young QB that already has enough on his plate.

I'm of the opinion that the Jets could have a top 5 defense this season if they can somehow muster a pass rush. The secondary may just morph into the best in the league.

The return of Kiddnets and Doc. Oct.  The world is right again.

I'd let Darnold sit for the first half of the season. Let him get acclimated to preparing for each game. They're going to want to get him started with a game that won't kill his confidence. Maybe at Miami or at home against Buffalo. That middle of the schedule looks rough for a rookie QB  Jax - Denver - Indy (only easier game) - Minn - at Chicago. Yikes. Outside of Indy, those are really good defenses.  Let Teddy start.

RB - I don't get it either. Powell has looked great most of the time even if he's not built for a full time role.

WR - Quincy adds another element. Knucklehead Anderson might break out. I don't hold a lot of hope for Pryor either. Let's hope one of the kid WRs develops into a third WR.

TE - I'm actually kind of excited about our TE prospects. We have way more talent at TE than we've had in years. Of course, none proven.

OL - Should be better with even an average center. The line might be adequate, but definitely in need of upgrades next season with all of our cap room.

DL - Eh, let's hope that Shepherd can bring some pressure or double coverage. Poor Leo can't do it all alone.

LB - The kid gloves are off Lee.The guy is a first rounder. Let's see how he does with extra responsibility.

DB - As good as it gets for us.

Coaches - Let's hope the Bates/Dennison combo is a wining one. Our DC and HC seem equally lost causes.

With Revis retiring reading lots of articles lately - interested in Jets players thoughts on him...

Personally its a very love/hate relationship with Revis - much to his own doing.....he's probably pound for pound the best/most talented player in Jet history....however due to his Mevis/all business mercenary personality I find that I never became a huge fan of him.....for the best player in franchise history I'd rank him well behind others much less talented as my favorite Jet in history - Curtis Martin, Chrbet, Mangold, likely few more......it's a shame because he was a fantastic player....I really can't blame him for trying to get as much $ as possible - we all know how short/fragile NFL careers are - but the way he went at doing it really turned me off and disconnected me from him and liking/appreciating him as a Jet.

On pure talent and play - he was a machine - Ive never seen a CB literally take top WRs completely out of the game week after week.....I mean studs in their prime putting up lines of 2 catches 10 yds....it was a ridiculous weapon and allowed Rex to send the house on blitzes which is the main reason they made those playoff runs...absolute HOF 1st ballot IMO

Jet career - great move by Tanny to recognize the talent and trade up for him.....the holdouts and constant griping about $ was tough to put up with....uncle gilbert was a headache....I was fine with dealing him for the 1st rder....just wish they signed him right after that yr vs few yrs later when he was done.  Replaced with that awful Dee Millner made me miss Revis even more....then the ring with the Pats of all teams ugh....

so with mixed emotions - 1st ballot HOF and Jet ring of honor.

just wish they signed him right after that yr vs few yrs later when he was done.
It's hard to shake this part - where he "stole" multi-million dollars from the team as a shell of himself, but I agree with most of what you said.

What he did during his first stint with the team was nothing short of amazing. There was one season where the Jets faced practically every top WR in the league and Revis shut each one down each week. He was a HUGE part of two AFC Championship Game runs for sure.

I also agree that he will never be as beloved by the fans as guys like Martin, Walker, Chrbet, Pennington, Klecko, or Mangold among others because of his mercenary approach. While it was genius how he played the system and squeezed every dollar he could - as a fan it was tough to take every offseason.

Him winning a Super Bowl with the Patriots will also hurt his legacy with Jet fans.

However like you said, he's the best player in Jets history from a pure talent/performance aspect and we were lucky to get to watch him week in and week out. Another player to go into the Hall of Fame as a Jet, so we have to at least love that.

one more thought today - if you havent watched the 1 Jets dr shorts on Facebook do it - like a brief Hard Knocks....love the Darnold stuff....but what really stood out is Chris Johnson....he comes off very smart and charismatic....everything Woody is not lol....so how does this work?  I have nightmares of Jets finally putting things together in a yr or 2 then Woody comes back and screws it all up while Chris is back in the shadows?  Any way Woody can pass the team on to Chris?  Do we envision co-owners like Tisch/Mara...

We need Gary Vaynerchuk to come in over the top with an investment team and make the Johnson's an offer they can't refuse.  I'm hoping within the next 10 years.

Thoughts on the Darnold situation? Nice rant from Jody Mac on WFAN this morning siding with the Jets. I do, too, as does Super Fan, Ira. Bad precedent to set and the two picks ahead of him have offset language.

If you look historically, offset language for a pick like Darnold would save the Jets about $700k. So Darnold is worth trading 3 2nd round picks to move up just a few spots to get, but the Jets are concerned enough that he could bust that they want to save a measly $700k of a $30M contract and delay his first year of development in the NFL and put him in a hole from the start.

Makes no sense to me. Teams already won huge by changing the structure of draft pick compensation which drastically reduced rookie contracts at the top. And now the Jets are going to fight over a further $700k even if it means lost time for a guy they need to become their franchise QB? Dumb.

I hope the next CBA sets forth all terms of rookie contracts and ends this nonsense. It seems like the agents and teams are fighting just for the sake of fighting.

It's about the precedent it sets for the Jets and even other teams for future rookie contracts. Radio broadcaster, Bob Wischusen, basically said today that it is Jimmy Sexton trying to take advantage of a young player and his parents who have no business experience to build his brand. What makes Sam deserving of this change to normal contract language over Mayfield, Barkley, Allen, Rosen, etc.?

Agent is fighting to make himself more attractive to future rookies.

"There’s a clear difference between doing right by your client and using your client to enhance your future recruiting position. Sexton was privately fuming at top overall pick Baker Mayfield’s camp when he agreed to his rookie deal with the Browns that included offsets, because it weakened Sexton’s leverage, according to sources.

No. 7 overall pick Josh Allen, who is represented by the same agency as Darnold (CAA), but not Sexton, “made it known” to his reps that he didn’t want to miss any practices. He signed before the Bills’ first practice. Allen’s deal with Buffalo also includes offsets.

If the Jets agreed to a deal with no offset language, then the floodgates would open. It would set a precedent that would surely lead to every future Jets first-round pick holding out until they got the same provisions as Darnold. I’d be shocked if the Jets brass relents. Frankly, they shouldn’t."

Just like the Chargers after Boss, right?

And why shouldn't the team assume more risk rather than forcing the player to accept the offset language? $700k on a $30M contract over 4 years is a lot bigger deal to a player than $700k compared to the $708M+ salary cap over the same 4 years that the team has.

Of course this would happen to the Jets. Regardless of who is to blame, can we really be surprised at this point?

Sexton works for Darnold, not the other way around. I hope Sexton gets fired by Darnold. It's a shame that a guy known for his work ethic and wanting to start right away can't even get to practice.

You can argue who gets hurt the most here and who has the most leverage. You may not necessarily want him to start from day 1, but you want him to take part in practice.

I'd make it clear to him that the Jets won't give in and the longer he waits, the longer it will take for him to start.

If anything, this gives Teddy more reps and a chance to win the job and perhaps some trade value.

This is dumb of the Jets and they should just cave.

We are talking about approximately 750k if he is cut. So let's pretend there's a scenario where he is cut after 3 seasons, what does that mean... well, it means he really sucks and is likely not signing for big money elsewhere anyways, so the amount of money the Jets stand to lose for Darnold double dipping is minuscule.

The fact that it got to this point is selfish on behalf of Darnold. Clearly he is going along with this. people act like Sexton is forcing Darnold to do this... no, Darnold knows exactly what his agent is doing. It's selfish on behalf of Darnold to jeopardize camp for a few hundred thousand on a 30mil contract and it's dumb of the Jets to let it get to this point.

Jets will ultimately cave, because they aren't cutting a QB they traded three 2nd round picks to get.

The offset language battles always struck me as odd. If the Jets release Darnold it means he’s been terrible so how much is he going to get on the market anyway?

i get not wanting to look weak in negotiations or set precedents, but from their viewpoint they shouldn’t be “planning” to cut him anyway.

At the same time Darnold should be thinking if he’s released that means he failed and he he’s lucky he even had a guaranteed contract in the first place.

It’s a battle over nothing basically. Of course the Jets can’t even keep their positive momentum of getting lucky that the best QB in the draft fell to them at 3 going into early camp.

Exactly. If he's bad enough that this language even matters, it means that everyone involved with drafting him will likely be fired anyway. So why would they possibly care about the long term effects of "caving" in this particular negotiation?

It's absolutely ludicrous

@Dr. Octopus  I'm gonna have trouble choosing the right words to convey this message  I mean I thought the NFL fixed rookie contracts  But in so many words lets say the Jets stream Bridgewater week in week out for a few Seasons  OR  For whatever reason Darnold begins to believe he's in a prime position to become a career backup which leads him to ask for his release  Odds are for most any other team it's like a new car which left the lot (depreciation) Best case scenario involving a team with a veteran QB who has yet to address a potential successor  Shouldn't Darnold deserve a little extra as opposed to just breaking even  I mean any concerns Darnold has about playing time and being stuck holding a clipboard could come to fruition just because the next Luck is available and/or the veteran QB is able to maintain his productivity  Lets face it once branded backup odds are it becomes difficult to not have a tainted view

Guess I could try an discuss etiquette for rookies when contracts involve veteran players  I will say that no matter how ones view may differ in facts it sure is interesting to consider Bridgewater's situation  https://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2018/03/teddy_bridgewaters_jets_contract_complete_breakdow.html

Basically it somewhat appears the Jets want to eat their cake and have it too what with having three potentially quite different directions to go at QB

Bridgewater could be deemed expendable if Darnold wins the job. In that scenario, why keep all three? They'd be paying Bridgewater and McCown a total of $16 million to sit on the bench.  http://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/76739/jets-quarterback-primer-three-candidates-seven-burning-questions

It is more than just offset language holding up Darnold's deal, per Rich Cimini. On this point, seems like the Jets are the ones looking to deviate from common practice:

"While the offset clause remains an issue, the major sticking point, as I understand it, is default language pertaining to guaranteed money. Under the Jets' proposal, Darnold's entire guarantee will void if he's fined by the league for discipline or conduct on/off the field. This is different from the Baker Mayfield and Josh Allen contracts. In their cases, their guarantee voids with a suspension, not a fine. Big difference. The Jets' approach is unusual based on recent history. It's believed that, in the last 10 drafts, no top-3 pick had voidables tied to league fines. "

With the new helmet rule, any player signing a new contract with blanket language giving a team the ability to void their deal due to simply a fine is crazy. With even the refs not sure how to enforce it, all it takes is one bang/bang play and any player on either side of the ball could be penalized and fined.

Apparently at least part of Roquan Smith's holdout is over language related to his guaranteed money if he is suspended under the helmet rule. He is also represented by CAA.

I was at Jet camp this weekend - was looking fwd to seeing the kid but of course there is a glitch in the matrix.  Darnold jerseys were by far the most popular in the crowd and in the Jet store....it's hard to say what the specific hold up is but Mac has been known to be a pretty reasonable GM while Sexton is known to push the envelope.  I think this has to do with Sexton pushing the Jets to get something more than the norm like the offset language and other items....for the Jets is obviously not about the $750K - obviously he's not going to get cut in his rookie contract even if hes a bust - its too cheap....this is setting precedent and not getting bullied ala Mevi$ and setting up for future late 1st rders to get similar concessions and assuming Sam is the man - pushing even further in extension talks down the line....Jets need to be firm IMO and not let this agent set the tone for this relationship....the agent works for Sam and not vice versa...he could be in camp tomorrow....if he's willing to lose the starting position over this stuff then it says a lot and I say let him sit.  He'll crack as soon as the team and fans move on and start looking seriously at Teddy/McCown as the starter which is going to be soon...and thats not a bad thing IMO.

The kid is 21 and I dont love the idea of putting him out there from snap 1 in a brutal 1st few games before a shaky OL and a rookie OC gels...Im thinking mid season so missing a few weeks to prove that this team wont be held hostage like the days of Mevi$ is ok by me....

As for camp - few observations

QBs - Teddy looks ok...showed flashes of potential but definitely rust....McCown on the other hand looked like the vet he is and likely starting QB...Im not a fan of him lasting the season as a starter but man the two youngsters can learn from him...I really hope he stays as QB coach next yr

RB - Crowell looked quick....Of course Eli is hurt and out for 3-6 - liked his potential

WRs- Anderson and Enuwa stood out - Pryor is really tall and rail thin...looks like an injury ready to happen

TE - the rookie from Miami made an amazing one handed grab in the EZ right in front of us....looked solid

Def - standouts were Adams flying around and talking up a storm - guy is a ridiculous leader oozing charisma and talent....Leo looked enormous and quick....Lee looked small but quick.....CBs were solid...best DBs in ages.

Anyway - welcome to the NY media Sam - hope youre ready for the nonstop assault if this continues....until more concrete info is out im siding with the jets on this one.....

Appreciate this post  It appears to put things into perspective  Contracts should be almost identical with more emphasis on when drafted as opposed to by whom

Interesting color on the Jets/Sexton relationship from Gary Myers FWIW:

"Sam Darnold’s agent Jimmy Sexton has had contentious relationship with Jets over treatment of clients: Never gave Tebow a chance; fired Rex; Doug Marrone opted out of Bills contract believing he had Jets job; nasty Ryan Fitzpatrick contract situation. And now Darnold holdout."

Yep this is more of a personal gripe of Sexton that Darnold is getting dragged into - 1st of many articles today with him getting ripped....going to get worse for the kid....time to be a man and tell your agent get this done.  If not....he's going to find out how quick you can turn from a hero to hated in NY...of course he'll be loved again when he finally signs but why get off to a start like this over contract language.

Like you said, may as well start getting used to the media now!

Now, this is interesting on the fines thing. Ira from Staten Island said this today and was wondering if true:
"Every player on the roster has a voidable tied to suspensions and fines -- even those players represented by CAA, which counts Sexton among its stable of high-powered agents. From the Jets' perspective, their offer to Darnold is consistent with every other contract on the team." (via ESPN)

Mehta and Costello said same over the weekend....Sexton represented Avery Williamson as a FA and supposedly agreed to same language....Jets have this across the board and can't make an exception for just him without opening flood gates - its good business practice especially with so many players getting in trouble - it will likely never effect Sam but could it effect extensions and contracts with other player who have gotten in trouble?  Absolutely

this is Sexton trying to play hardball to prove his worth to next year's draft class and Sam is being taken for the ride....really thought the kid was smarter than this and someone in his family/group would see he is being used as a pawn...it's going to get worse and he's not going to win this battle....very rare Ive seen guys like Mehta, Costello and fans on side of team but it seems to be the case....ironic that Mevi$ who was one oft he greatest Jets but never beloved due to these type of antics just retired to way too many yawns and shoulder shrugs due to this very attitude....what a shame

This fine thing  is going to be problematic for some Jets (though not Sam) , as GroveDiesel mentioned yesterday because of the helmet rule and figuring out what is should be fined. I read an article yesterday about the NFL presenting the rule to the Eagles and how confusing it was.. Eagles were shown a play from the Super Bowl and the refs at the presentation were split on whether it would be illegal under the new rule. How do you go after someone's money while they figure this out?

from what the beat reporters said the fine language was for more severe violations such as PED and arrests - not uniforms or in game stuff.

Jets signed No. 3 overall pick Sam Darnold to a four-year, $30.25 million contract.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the deal is expected to be signed on Monday, which is good enough for us to make it official. Like all first-round deals, the contract includes a team option for a fifth year. The deal has $20 million in guarantees. Now signed, Darnold can get to work at training camp.

Guess they opened the floodgates. Jets are screwed.

reading this - if true - im fine with the bonus structures and on the field fines being waived.....it seems that they made an exception on the off the field fines which Im not a fan of....whether they are going to make this a one time thing or not i guess we'll see....the fact that he already is taking 1st team reps shows me they real want him to start from day 1....not a huge fan of that but probably why they relented....

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- In Rex Ryan's mind, it's a no-brainer.

"If the kid is ready, play him," the former New York Jets coach said Tuesday. "Why would you stunt his growth?"

The kid, of course, is Sam Darnold, only 21 years old and fabulously wealthy -- the perceived savior of a franchise that hasn't been to a Super Bowl in 50 years. Now that he's under contract, with a $20 million signing bonus in the bank, his development in the next few weeks will be one of the top storylines in the NFL. At some point in the preseason, coach Todd Bowles will have to determine whether Darnold is ready to lead the team.

Start the future now, or let him season on the bench?

In 2009, Ryan faced the same decision with rookie Mark Sanchez, who, like Darnold, was a first-round pick out of USC. Ryan named Sanchez his opening-day starter, and he suspects Bowles will do the same with Darnold.

"I have a feeling the rookie will start, in my opinion, from Day 1," Ryan said. "I would be shocked if he doesn't start."

The decision has many layers. Darnold's competition (Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater) is better than what Sanchez faced (Kellen Clemens), but some people at One Jets Drive believe Darnold will leapfrog the veterans as soon as he proves he's ready. Of course, it's not always a black-and-white answer when evaluating young quarterbacks. Sometimes it's just a gut feeling.

"I think he has a chance to make a transcendent impact," said former NFL quarterback-turned-analyst Dan Orlovsky, who has studied Darnold closely on tape.

That's a strong opinion, but Orlovsky believes Darnold has rare attributes for the position. He described the former USC star as an unconventional quarterback because of his innate ability to make plays the way they're not drawn up.

"I call it magical sloppiness, where he's just got this unique trait that I think he was born with and developed playing all kind of sports," Orlovsky said. "He can just make some things happen with his body and with his arm angles. You can't drill that stuff."

Darnold isn't a textbook quarterback. His throwing motion includes a noticeable hitch and sometimes his feet are pointed this way and that way when he delivers the ball. He's "a little sloppy with everything, even the good stuff," Orlovsky said. But his arm is strong and accurate, and he has a terrific feel for judging angles and the way receivers run their routes, according to Orlovsky.

Ryan likes Darnold's upside and loves his intangibles, but he wonders if the hitch in his motion will be an issue on the NFL level.

"The only thing I didn't like about him in college was his mechanics," he said. "I think he's a slow-deliver guy and that scares me in this league. A lot of guys will say, 'Yeah, but we can coach that out.' Bulls---."

"All three are decent quarterbacks, but [Josh] McCown has been a journeyman his whole life. What are you going to get there? I mean, forget it. That's out. I mean, it's [Teddy] Bridgewater or the rookie. If he has a good preseason, why not start the rookie?"Rex Ryan, on Sam Darnold

Orlovsky doesn't think Darnold's hitch will be a major factor.

"Could it hurt him? Yes. Do I think it will? No," he said. "Here are my reasons why: When USC did a lot of their quick-game stuff, I was really impressed. When that ball needs to get out, it gets out. The motion is unique, but the ball, timing-wise, is just as quick as any other guy coming out. The ball gets out fast. He’s got that quick-twitch wrist flick."
If there's one thing Rex knows about it's developing a young QB.
