1st half they actually hung in there - some bad calls hurt them....2d half they just couldnt keep up. Same issues keep showing up which points to coaching....
I think we are stuck with him for 1 more yr at least....problem is with another crappy yr 5 win yr if Gase even goes 8-8 next year Chris Johnson will be spouting off improvement and how Gase has turned it around.....
on the plus side at least that Giants pick is looking good!

We're stuck with him unless maybe there is some major Jets fan revolt and everyone cancels their season tickets.
I still can't believe that they don't throw to Bell, a rb with WR skills. It's unreal. The one time they called a screen, the blockers failed to block the one guy on the defense that prevented a big play.
It also infuriates me that the Great Gazoo kicker of ours missed another fg and xp, yet we don't make any attempts to replace him. He's 55% from the 40s and he's missed 3 xps.
Sam continues to mix some great plays with some bad ones. I guess we can live with those mistakes because he's so young and displays great potential at times. It's way too early to tell, but maybe that's what he will be throughout his career. We'll see. On the other hand, I see lots of experienced QBs like Ryan and Rivers continue to make horrendous plays, but no one focuses on it too much because they are not young QBs under the microscope.
I remember the anger from everyone when Gase was hired. I was livid. We all saw it, but doped Mr. Magoo Johnson didn't. He's the most incompetent one in the organization and that's saying a lot.

I found this study of success rates of becoming a starter by position in the third round:
3rd Round - OL (40%) TE (39%) LB (34%) DL (27%) WR (25%) DB (24%) QB (17%) RB (16%)
Historically, the Jets are probably a third of the league average. At least JD gives me some hope since he hasn't had a track record of failure yet like all of his incredible predecessors. Hopefully we can get a guard or center with the Giants pick.

At least he can be discarded after the season - and Myers has been shaky as well.....kicker position is a tough one.
Jets move up to 7th pick as per Tankathon.....if both Jets and Jax lose out likely pick 8th....if they win one they would drop to around 14....if they somehow win both looking at 18th......not in big tank mode as I was in the QB year but man that is a big fall to win 2 meaningless games.....

Let's hope that Buffalo beats NE this Saturday so that they have something meaningful to play for in week 17.
I've never had an issue with the Bills, unlike Miami and NE that I've always hated. The Bills have a nice coaching staff, good GM, and strong work ethic. You really have to like how they have built their team. You can debate how good Josh Allen is and will be, but he's got heart and gives them a chance to win every week. We can only hope some day that we reach that next level that they have. However, our coaching staff seems pathetic and our ownership is worse. It's hard to build a team when it's rotten at the top.

The Jet have beaten Dallas, Oakland, and Pittsburgh...all on the periphery of the playoffs. It's hard to believe given our start that we could have played playoff spoiler like this. That said, we also lost to Miami and Cincy.
Williams has done an amazing job with the defense given all the injuries and lack of talent. Give that man a raise.

I'll never quite get over the bounty stuff with Williams, but the defense looked much, much better than it should have.
On the other hand, and I know this is ad nauseam, but someone was bringing up in the Devante Parker thread all of the guys that seem to have gone through Gase's system unsuccessfully have moved on to pretty promising heights with him gone.

It was an ugly win but the defense played outstanding and I echo the comments about Williams. With Mosley and Avery back and a hopefully improved Q this defense can be scary next season.
Darnold had no time at all but looked decent enough anyway. When he does get time he looks excellent. Obviously we all no what the top priority needs to be this offseason. Hopefully Douglas knocks it out of the park unlike his predecessor.

I had to think for a minute about who Avery was. Ha. I completely forgot about him. Is his third year guaranteed? Even the cast-off Burgess has looked pretty good. Same for Hewitt and our rookie before he got hurt.
You would think that we'll get a better CB or two. The question remains: can we get a pass rusher? We've been saying that for decades now it seems.
The o-line has to be our number one focus. Maybe a WR, too, but the o-line needs major reconstruction. I'm sure we'll address it now. 2 of our 3 picks should be o-line.

To be fair, Flores traded Drake, too and barely got more playing time than Ballage, the worst running back I've ever seen. They didn't even try to pad Drake's value before the deadline. Something wasn't right there.
Parker had a very good season, but he didn't do much until Preston got hurt. They had to throw to someone since they were always trailing big and couldn't run the ball either. Buyer beware in fantasy. He does have a track record of getting hurt.
That said, point taken. Our offensive coaching staff does not inspire confidence at all.

I wonder if Flores had a choice in trading Drake and if the playing time situation wasn't from on high, too.

So.....its finally over.
Really not sure how to feel about this season.
They had almost unprecedented levels of injuries/illnesses and other reasons for players missing. So based on that, a 7-9 record is a miracle, especially when you consider that they lost to Cincy and Miami. Most of the credit there has to go to Greg Williams who absolutely made chicken salad out of chicken #### with this crew. Lost Williamson for the whole year, didn't get a full game out of Mosley, traded L. Williams, didn't get impact play out of Q williams. Guys off the street at corner. Dude is a MIRACLE worker.
The back end of the schedule was easy (didn't stop them from losing to Cincy, but still....) but you have to at least give Gase credit for not losing the team. They kept playing. But again, it was mostly the defense. The offense was mostly bad but with how bad the O-line was (and that's McCag's fault) you can't really blame them.
Everyone still there is going to get a pass based on these 2 things (the injuries and the o-line). Hopefully they can hit on the some draft picks and fix it (to at least passable levels) by next year.

A sloppy un-inspiring win vs the Bills JV team. Sam as well as most of the team looked meh - at least it only dropped them to 11th in draft. Some end of year thoughts
QB: Sam showed enough that I think he is a franchise QB. Very excited to see him behind a real OL with some additional weapons. It is mind boggling that he is the same age as the supposed #1 pick this yr. The only benefit to Gase staying is that it gives Sam a 2d yr in the system which is a good thing. With only 2-3 yrs left on his rookie contract he must take the big step next yr and make a run. They also need to find a decent backup. Winning one or two of those early games could have gotten them into playoffs.
RB: I was unimpressed with Bell but it was mostly due to playcalling and OL. Gase sure seems to dislike Bell - I dont see how they can eat that much salary so really hope they keep him but Im expecting a RB to be drafted with an eye toward replacing Bell. Powell looked ageless - Id bring him back on cheap one more yr. Ty Mongtomery was a waste.
WR: If Anderson wants $13-15M I'd let him go. Crowder is a capable #2 and they need a real #1 WR anyway. If all the blue chip OL go I could live with a stud WR with OL in rds 2-3.
TE: Lost yr for Herndon - if he returns healthy he'll form a nice duo with Griffin.
OL - nuke it and rebuild. Literal tear down to the studs project. I'd keep Harrison, Alex Lewis and Edoga - mostly as depth. Land a stud in FA with another starter then draft at least 2-3 OL. I trust JD will focus on this areas
DL - Very solid - Q was a bummer as a top pick but hopefully he develops. Early returns is Leo Williams the sequel so at least he'll be a good run stopper. Id keep the rest intat and just add that elusive pass rusher they desperately need.
LB - Hewitt was a nice find. Avery Williamson need to take a cut to return or id let him go. Mosely should have this defense even better next season - strong group
CB - Tru finally bottomed out and I'd even take the $3M savings to cut him. Bless Austin/Maulet/Hairsten were decent - should be able to get a #2 corner out of 1 of them. Poole needs to be re-signed - very solid 1st yr. True #1 CB is needed but may need to wait.
S - finally a healthy yr out of Maye who looked good. Adams took next step - need to lock them both up so it continue to be a strength.
Coaching - Gase was underwhelming - Williams overwhelming....if Williams leaves this turns into bona fide disaster. Pray to the football gods he likes it hear and isnt offered a HC job.
Draft/FA - 2-3 stud OL, #1 WR, #1Pass rush and #1 CB - thats a tall order for one off season. they should have enough FA money to land 1 stud OL and a decent starter. If no stud OL are available at #11 I could live with Jeudy, Lamb or passrusher/CB. These are the prime positions and for whatever reason MAc simply ignored them - I dont think JD makes the same mistake.
Schedule is harder next yr but not impossible. If Sam doesnt get mono this could have been a playoff team. It's time for a mandate - playoffs or bust. It will be a decade.....no more excuses. If no playoffs then Gase must go. I'd even consider moving G Will to HC....guy did a ridiculous job this year - on my irreplaceable list.

I'm with you TLEF....I also don't know how to feel about this years Jets. We start the year 1-7 and than go 6-2 and finish the year 7-9 which is not far off at all from what I and most of us originally thought we'd finish which was 8-8. Yet the path it took to get to 7-9 was as unsatisfying as humanly possible....I mean it was excruciating especially when Darnold was sick...vomit inducing.TLEF316 said:

The most weird thing about it is that most of us who make up Jet Nation hate the coach as he's just a real hard guy to get behind yet on the other hand Gase kept the team together despite the horrific start and all the injuries with the ones to Avery and the one to Mosley being the most devastating and we ended up finishing strong and there is actually some hope for next year. I'm telling you, it's the most odd thing I've ever experienced as a fan of this team. I can't ever recall hating the coach yet thinking if the GM of the team Joe Douglass over the offseason can somehow thru either the draft or free agency improve the O-line, secondary and god forbid find an edge rusher, this team might actually have a shot at being on the playoff bubble for the first time in forever it seems.
It's bizzaro world here for me here in Jet Nation but like the sucker I am and have been for 45+ years, I'm going to hold out hope that next year with some of the tinkering I just mentioned, this cursed team of ours could actually have a special type of year.
OK my alarm clock is ringing...what the hell am I thinking? I should know full well that next year will be like every other year...agida and frustration...shame on me...I can be silly at times....lol
So I just looked for first time at the 2020 schedule and withought putting too much thought into this, it will likely be quite difficult for us to get into the playoffs playing this upcoming schedule which looks awfully tough having to deal with the NFC West and AFC West. We have 49ers, Browns, Raiders, Broncos and Cards at home. And we have Seahawks, Chiefs, Rams, Chargers and Colts on the road.
Now that said and like I said this is very very early prognostication based on what we know now and not what Douglass does in the offseason via the draft and UFA but it would likely be a stretch to see the Jets any better than 9-7 if EVERYTHING went fabulously and 6-10 as a floor if it was just a "same ole Jets" type of season.
What gives me some real hope tho is that Douglass's forte is building thru the draft and player evaluation skills. He really knows offensive line talent which is not surprising seeing he used to be one in his playing days. And with that being THE biggest need on the team if he can work some magic there thru the draft and FA that would help enormously and would change the entire complexion of the offense.
Another year of Sam building upon some solid 2nd half starts, hopefully Bell produces more with a better O-line and we'd be getting back Herndon and hopefully resigning Robbie who emerged at least for me as a "must keep him" type player.
Add to that a healthy Avery and Mosley coming back, Douglass gets some secondary help and like I said earlier god forbid we ever found an edge rusher, who knows maybe we could be a surprisingly good football team next year. I'm hoping for a "Gorton" type impact from Douglass and until proven wrong, I'm thinking he's going to fix the problem areas we have.
Oh and we have to make sure Greg Williams comes back as DC. Heck I'd love for him to be head coach but we know that aint happening. But the job he did with this no name Jet defense other than Jamal with all the injuries was simply phenomenal. Williams needs to be back so don't screw around with him as he's the best DC I can ever recall us having since the Bud Carson days back in the mid 80's.
Anyways, much tougher schedule next year but we hopefully we'll have alot better luck than we had this past year with injuries as it couldn't have been much worse. So maybe things we'll even out and we'll surprise next season despite the schedule.

Even if you dont mean it, that's what you say. You say it, if for no other reason than to try and preserve SOME trade value for a guy you just paid an astronomical amount of money and who was the best back in the league like 2-3 years ago. (and isn't that old yet)

The guy only manages half a team and still can't even get that right. This holding the team together rhetoric is probably mostly attributable to Williams keeping the defense playing hard. The offense looked mostly like poop except for some flashes.

So there is a Twitter account under the name Wyatt (which is the name of Gase's child) that always defends Gase on Twitter. Manish wrote an article accusing Gase of having a Twitter a burner Twitter account. He even asked him about it today in the presser.

My thoughts: 7-9 was a miracle, all things considered. Don't tell Fariq, but I'd rather have a worse record and draft picks because what I was looking for was improvement at the skill positions mixed with some depth and winning on the strength of the newfound dominant playmakers on defense.
And we got none of that. We got a gutty team whose charm was its ability and wherewithal not to quit. That was the year. No depth anywhere on offense, Darnold lurching back and forth between quality and scared rookie (the most dramatic swing could be seen in the Dallas/NE games), and nothing but injuries or pink slips to the stalwarts on defense.
In short, another promised year, another wasted one. That's the only thing that can be said. For all the rebuilding, it's scratching out a 7-9 record against a #### schedule. So...

While the obvious need for this team is OL, Jerry Jeudy is going to be awfully tempting if he falls to 11.
And that is a mistake, especially with the # of quality WRs in this draft. Let someone else pay big $ to a WR. Fix the people that make throwing to the WR possible. If you look at the top QBs this past year, most had good to great OLs.

They surely have to address the o-line through free agency and they draft, but if they don't pay to keep Robby Anderson (and with his reported asking price they shouldn't) WR will be a serious need as well.
With that said I'd prefer them to take an OT at 11 but a playmaker like Jeudy would be tempting.

If there is a tackle that is worthy of the #11 pick, you take him and don't look back.
But if you feel like jeudy is an elite guy (not just good, elite) i would rather have him than a plug and play (but ultimately mediocre) tackle.

Yes - as solid as D'Brickshaw Ferguson was, if the choice was his career versus Julio Jones', I take Julio. However if the choice is Joe Thomas' career versus Julio's, I'd be tempted to make the flashy pick, but would surely have to take Thomas.
Things will get fleshed out a bit better as we get closer to the draft. This team is not lacking in needs for sure.

I agree he should lose his job, but this is the Daily News. It wouldn't surprise me if he did it in the first place at the request of his boss. The Post and Daily News are tabloids, not real newspapers. They care more about stirring things up rather than telling the truth.

Seriously, though, I agree with Lod001. IMO the value at WR isn't in the early part of the 1st round. I like Jeudy a lot, but I don't think he's a prospect at the level of a Julio or Calvin were and there's a number of other WRs who should have similar ratings to Jeudy so the value at WR should be later than 11.

I don't even think Enunwa gets a chance to hurt himself again. I saw something on Monday that he has spinal stenosis. It sucks that he hurt himself so badly, but giving him that contract sucked more. I remember complaining that he got so much and had a history of getting. McCant was the worst GM in our history and that says a lot.
I don't believe that Jeudy will even be there, so I think it's a moot point. That said, he would be hard to pass up, but I hear you. the O-LINE should be priority number 1. If/when we lost Anderson, WR will also be a big priority, but it's a deep class for WRs. Should be a good one available with our second or even third pick.

I don't think a Bell trade is realistic given his salary but if they could get a good deal for him, I would be on board. I actually think Bell ran very hard and gained yards that weren't there but if Gase (and by extension Darnold) aren't going to use him properly then his loss will be minimal. I would not be on board using a first or second on a RB, but one of their third round picks would be fine.
Montgomery looked like a total beast in the preseason, and could have been a useful part of the passing game - I don't know what happened there but Gase mis(under)used him as well.
Powell will be 32 so the contract better be very cheap or I think he's pretty easily replaceable - he did run hard and looked good though.

I have no idea what Gase's plan was regarding the running game. He didn't use Montgomery at all. He wouldn't throw to Bell or hand it off to him at the goal-line. He must have signed Powell for the leadership. Although I like the guy, there was no point of signing him because of his age. It's not like they were going to develop him.
It's pretty worrisome that this faux offensive guru had no clue what to do with his RB situation.

I agree on not reaching for an OL in the draft...11 is a bit far and Letherwood already is going back. If a true stud is not there then I'd be ok with Jeudy or Lamb as long as Douglas lands some good OL in FA. I'd rather get Sam a best WR playmaker then reach for the next Erik Flowers. Get a stud and another solid OL in FA and I'd be ok with OL in the 2d and 3rd.
Darnold - 2020 is the year. no more excuses. He's still uber young but not a rookie....should have a much improved OL and weapons.....not learning a new offense. 2020 is when we see the real Sam hopefully take that step toward being a bona fide franchise QB. Hopefully get playoff experience in 2020 and all in for 2021 with last yr on a cheap contract.
I dont want to get greedy with Greg Williams but from how he ran the defense with such sub par players - with Mosely back and Q/Bless another yr of development - I wouldnt go crazy on FA/high draft picks. I'd extend Adams and bring back some of the FA who shouldnt be too expensive (Burgess, Poole, etc) - pay middle money for some more depth at CB/pass rush and let it rip. This has to be an offensive driven FA/draft.
