2023 New York Jets (6 Viewers)

and looking back on the 2018 draft -

5 QBs taken in the 1st rd - the 3rd and 5th one taken overall hit while 3 top 10 QBs will likely not be even starting in their 5th yr and are with different teams.  ITs no coincidence that the 2 QBs that hit had stable above average coaching staff/organizations (Buff/Balt) that had a solid team base.  Picking the right QB is only a small part of it - if the coaching staff/team is solid the odds of success go way up.  Jets need Saleh and staff to develop and be consistent or else Wilson doesnt have a chance.

I know GMs are usually tied to QBs but I am loving JD and want to keep him long term even if Wilson isnt the next top QB.
Like I said earlier, one of my favorite things about JD is that he's setting this up perfectly. Obviously in a perfect world Wilson will build on those last four weeks and look good in 2022, but if he looks like he did the first half of the season the Jets, will be in great position to draft another rookie QB who will walk into a situation where he's behind a top o-line and surrounded by, at worst, a solid set of skill players.

I've seen recent pictures of Becton working out recently - he looks to be in great shape, even looked "slim". It's odd that after one season where he's injured, people are throwing him on the scrap heap. He wasn't great as a pass blocker as a rookie (but was solid enough for a rookie) but was devastating as a run blocker. Gore was 75 years old but still effective running behind Becton.
It is a what have you done for me lately league - rookie year he was a stud and everyone was salivating over him.  All the news last year was bad though - he came into camp out of shape, was getting consistently beat by not only Lawson but many other players on the Jets and intra squad scrimmages, he looked shaky in other games and in the short time he was there in game 1.  He then gets injured and was supposed to be back in 5-8 weeks - with an entire season to get healthy he never came back and lots of leaks that he was out of shape and not working hard to get back - never returned.  It left a bad taste in everyones mouth.

I still am hopeful that he comes back healthy and ready to resume a very promising rookie year - but I cant blame anyone for being nervous about him.  If he reaches his potential that OL is going to be very good so Im rooting for him

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Chiefs have given WR Tyreek Hill permission to seek a trade.

Hill is in the last year of his contract with the Chiefs and has been in talks on a contract extension for weeks. Talks appear to have broken down. Adam Schefter reports that the Jets and Dolphins are already in "serious talks" to trade for Hill. It's highly unlikely that those are the only teams seriously interested if Hill is truly available. Hill's next contract can be expected to be massive if he lands with a new team, but the 28-year-old is a game-changing presence that could take a contender over the top. The Chiefs are hosting Marquez Valdez-Scantling for a visit, who would help replace Hill's downfield abilities, but won't be able to fill his No. 1 wide receiver shoes. That may fall to Juju Smith-Schuster, who would rack up targets with Hill gone, but the former Steeler is several notches less explosive. If Hill is traded it will be a downgrade for the entire Chiefs offense.

they dont want to pay him Adams $ - Ill send the #10 for him and pay the contract.  Time for a star in NY

Totally agree. Rumors saying they want two first rounders but #10 is worth more than the package GB just got for Adams.  Miami has no first rounder

They're looking for multiple firsts. They might get it with the Dolphins. I don't know if the Jets can do that in a rebuild.

eta* Not this year, they won't.

Miami has #29 (640) and #50 (400) - 1,045 - even if they give another 1st rder next yr its devalued for waiting a year and likely a playoff team so figure maybe another 500 pts for a max of 1,540

Jets could send #10 (1300 pts) and even one of the 2d rders #35 (550 pts) - 1,850

Blows Miami out of the water if JD is ready to make a big splash.

Ah...forgot Miami has the SF first rounder.

Still, #10 is way better and would put KC in a position to basically have their pick of WR

Probably not a good sign - but maybe the new regime can bring it home

The #Jets are in on Tyreek Hill, sources confirm. They are among the finalists. From what I’m told, the ball is now in Tyreek Hill’s court. What does he want? NYJ or Miami. Jets won’t be outbid. Just a matter of what Hill prefers.

Yeah, hill certainly strikes me as a guy who would like being in Miami.
Jets always get used in these scenarios so trying not to get hopes up.  I know the salary cap is a mirage - see Rams - but Miami on overthcap has $6M in cap space and they just signed Armstrong to a 5 yr $75M contract so that puts them over without some more moves/cuts.  Jets could fit him right now and probably offer more $.

Lots of banter on Jet forums of him being a "bad guy" and Jets shouldnt want him - Im sorry but most teams in the NFL have had their share of "bad dudes" - Watson just went on a multi city tour while still facing 20 lawsuits - KC had no trouble with a winning culture having him on their team.  The guy paid his price and has stayed out of trouble since - Jets need to stop the all choir boy culture - Im personally fine with it.

One of the rare instances where we can't fall back on "well, everyone wants to play in NYC over X."

I'm in for Hill, but not for 1.10 + one of the seconds.  Too many holes to fill while bringing in a monster, monster contract.  More feasible IMO if it's a 1 for 1 with a pick we are all anticipating can be a WR anyway.

Look at what  adding Diggs did for Josh Allen's development - this could make Wilson a legit franchise QB and give the Jets their first legit offense in decades.  Its worth a #10 and one of the seconds IMO - I probably draw the line at that and if JDs history is any indication I doubt its an overpay but this is why he accumulated picks.  Would still leave them enough ammo in the draft to address the defense.

Yah, there isn't a franchise or fan base in the league that wouldn't take the guy.

I know the stuff with his kid got dropped (although I'm skeptical. I think he did it) but the college stuff with his girlfriend happened and got brushed under the rug (probably because she didn't want to give up the payday). It is what it is.

Edit: correction...he took a plea on the college stuff. Still way less than he deserved.  If you believe the accusations,  he should still be in jail

Can’t speak for a whole fan base, but I would have a hard time cheering for him. The mentality that, “other teams would do it” is an excuse to overlook the issues. It also happens to be right which only makes it more distasteful.

I don't disagree, just trying to maintain some conservatism here I suppose.  Devil's advocate - I do worry that his skillset may not have the most longevity, and we can end up paying dearly for the back half of this contract, while also getting the remainder of his prime while we still aren't quite ready to make that jump.  (I'm a Ranger fan, and this has strong comparisons to the Artemi Panarin acquisition, although that was FA not trade.)  But having said that, it's indisputable that he instantly makes a difference for any offense he's on and I would love to have him, provided we don't pay too much more than Adams cost LVR.

Sources: Jets and Dolphins both now have trades in place for the soon-to-be former Chiefs’ WR Tyreek Hill. The question now becomes where Hill wants to become the highest-paid WR in NFL history. Once he decides, the trade is expected to happen; for now, Hill is said to be “torn.”

Of course he's "torn." He wants to go to Miami but the Jets are probably offering more money.

used again to up an offer - always happens

Chiefs are trading six-time Pro-Bowl WR Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins for five draft picks: a 2022 1st-round pick (No. 29), a 2nd-round pick (No. 50) and a 4th-round pick, as well as 4th- and 6th-round picks in the 2023 draft, sources tell ESPN.

Fun sidetrack out of nowhere - shows that JD is ready to go after premium talent even if its trading assets - until they start winning they will always be used as leverage.

Bummed but still have lots of assets - waiting for the next disgruntled start to want out!

Well that made for an interesting Wednesday morning. Top of the morning to you, everybody. I was unencumbered and going to lie down for the day, but now I'm wide awake, caffeinated, and jilted at the altar.

Criminy.

Whatever package they offered, I'd offer it for Metcalf as well.  Not quite as good, but younger and without the character concerns.

But it doesn't seem like Seattle wants to trade him.

WOW - JD is the man!  even is losing Im more impressed-

Here is the trade the Chiefs and Jets had in place for Tyreek Hill: Chiefs would have gotten picks No. 35, 38 and 69 Jets would have gotten Hill and No. 103.

I get that Tyreek is a unicorn, and it's pretty rare when someone like that is on the trade block, but it also makes me wonder: If the Jets are serious about trading for a proven vet to help out Wilson, wouldn't Brandin Cooks be a decent match? Houston isn't afraid to trade away vets, and Cooks is a free agent after 2022. He's also only 6 months older than Hill, and likely a lot cheaper. (Typically, I scoff when people suggest possible trades as if the actual NFL is anything like fantasy football, but, over the past few weeks, "NFL football" and "fantasy football" have seemed indistinguishable from one another.)

It's not the worst idea. I'd be concerned with his concussion history. He's had a few.

But I think they saw hill as an offense changer. (Which he is) And the timing was great in that his contract is basically gonna run right up until the time they have to make a decision on a Wilson extension.  And at that point,  hill will be a 31/32 year old speed guy who will probably be easy to move on from.

If not an elite guy like hill (or Metcalf) I'm ok with them drafting someone at 10 and allowing the offense to grow together.

Hill could have spend up the process in a BIG way. Cooks would be a nice addition if was really cheap. Certainly couldn't hurt. Very undervalued player.

Most logical move for the Jets is to go hard after Metcalf right now this minute.

DKM owners will suffer short term, but they were gonna do that with him in Seattle anyway.

Long term, he’d be the perfect weapon to help ZWilson develop.

I like that you like what your GM had in place, i might have preferred the Jets package and 2 Top 40 selections.

-The good news for Jets fans is you all still have 4-10-35-38, 4 Top 40 picks should accelerate the rebuild in New York.

-Two Words: Elijah Moore!

Kids a dynamite stick at WR

Will it help Moore when the select a top WR at #10?  Some are turned off by that, but it can be a blessing.

I think the Jets will cement their Secondary early in the Draft, there's a number of names but they can combo Safety-Cornerback and at least return fire vs the weapons the Phins and Bills will utilize.

The Jets have two more picks in the early 2nd, plenty of people they can pair with Elijah Moore.

Skyy Moore...would a Moore and Moore combo be lethal? I like several WRs that can had after the pair from Ohio State are gone.

Jets have options right now and when you have options or draft capital you typically find hope.

I cannot evaluate their QB yet, didn't see much that knocked my socks off but like the Miami Dolphins, this was a bad team when they selected...what's his name again? 😆

Jets are doing well IMO. Pushing the Phins to get better, all good.

Yea, JD has been impressive. The W's aren't there yet, but I love what he's building. Very quietly, the O-Line and secondary are looking a lot better than most expected. This year should be solid, with the needle pointing up. Much depends on Wilson, and he could go either way, but it looks like JD is committed to getting him more help. That's something they haven't done with any of their rookie qb's in the last decade-plus, going back to Sanchez.

Exactly - the jury is still out on Wilson but I cant remember the last tie the Jets surrounded a young QB with so much help/talent.  Sanchez's rookie year the offense was stacked but by year 3 it was a shell of what it used to be and Rex focused so much on the defense that Sanchez was left flailing.  Nowhe ended up being a bad QB but as we saw his 1st 2 yrs - even a bad QB can take a team deep in the playoffs if the other pieces are in place.

Also I think Doc said that even if Wilson is not the answer, JD has put together a good enough team where they can take another swing with a vet or new rookie in 2 more years.  Usually a rookie failing destroys a team - this team could be ascending in 2yrs so if Wilson just doesnt develop they could easily cut him loose ala Sam and start over in a much better place than last time.

I havent been this optimistic in years - but am acutely aware they may still end of with only 5-7 wins next year.  Wins now matter but if Wilson balls out I think most fans are ok with just being in the mix this year then make the big move next year - they will have another $50M to spend.

Under the radar signing - kicker has been a problem for yrs - I like both of the guys they have now - Z wasnt healthy all last year - if he is healthy he is a very good kicker with big time range.  Should be an interesting battle

Jets signed K Greg Zuerlein.

Zuerlein was released from Dallas at the start of free agency after converting 83% of field goals and missing six extra points last year. The 34-year-old never looked fully healthy after undergoing back surgery in the 2021 offseason. The Jets tendered kicker Eddy Pineiro at $2.43 million as a restricted free agent earlier this month. Zuerlein will push Pineiro for the kicker job in training camp.

JD continuing to show he's the first adult in the room since the early Tannenbaum days.

6-8 week injury in week 1 and this is why so many people are down on Becton and think an OT is in play - no reason he should be having any issues 6.5 months after unless the team covered up an ACL which is hard to believe.

@Connor_J_Hughes

The #Jets aren’t sure if Mekhi Becton will be able to do much during OTAs
