2023 Philadelphia Eagles - Complete waste of a season finally comes to an end. (6 Viewers)

Good news for the draft is that 4 QBs likely go before we pick at 10, so we're kind of picking the 6th non QB in the draft.

Bad news is no OL/TE/WR/RB are expected to go up there, so those other 5 players before us will likely be Defensive players.

Eh. The drafts never go as expected. Some dumb team might take a RB top 5/10. Some dumb team will trade up for a player that no one had going that high. Happens more frequently as the trade market is much more active each year it seems. I could see the Bears trading back a few times and some silly team taking a one of the top WRs. I think if we stay at 10 we will surely get a good non QB player. I wonder if the 2024 Saints 2nd rounder will be in play for something in a trade up as well, or a player. One thing I know is Howie will do at least 2 things where rivals will either say "Wish our GM/Owner did this" and "No way the Eagles can afford that/how does he do it?" On that subject, the amount of Howie haters at this point should be the same as the amount of Wentzboys - zero.

There's a few in this thread who still haven't admit they were wrong about the guy. I'm not mentioning names though. I blame this on the Angelo Catadl's of the world though Eagles Shirley and Butch.

Howie has earned both praise and disdain. He built a Super Bowl team in 2017, people loved him. He then quickly tore that team apart (can't blame him for Wentz, but plenty of other moves made them go from SB to 4 wins pretty quick) and people let him know he stunk during that time. And now just as quickly built them back up so we love him again. Let's hope he can sustain it, that's the one thing he hasn't proven yet. He's a damn good GM overall, but no one's perfect, and Philly fans are known for letting you know when you aren't doing your best. Not sure what the confusion about this is. No one owes you anything. After the 2017 season he made a lot of questionable or bad moves, but has quickly rebounded.

Now if you're saying today people think Howie is a bad GM, then I'm with you, that's ridiculous. It's as bad as someone still thinking Hurts isn't a good QB.

Its the Not For long League. Currently, Howie is the best GM in the league, winning exeuctive of the year 2x in the past 6 years. Just like players, when your performance goes down, you get less slack. Not a difficult concept if you are a fan of sports. Only the true great greats are given unlimited latitude, and even still, there are a lot of people that still find problems with all time great players. Lebron comes to mind quickly.

I just don't see us paying "a big amount of $$" to a FA Running back. They might sign one, but it would be like in April or later when the market is super cooled and guys will be willing to take big discounts, etc.

Ya but we'd likely have to move up from 30 to get Bijan. Can you imagine if we move back from 10 and up from 30, and end up with one of the top 3 CBs and Bijan in round 1? Then just go crazy on DL the next couple rounds. Would be awesome.
Wonder if AJ will try to convince Henry to come to Philly (if he is truly on the block and if the titans give him any say on where he goes.) Can't even imagine Henry behind that Oline.

I figured Ruben Amaro JR as GM would make people appreciate Howie first. Dude ruined such a good team. The problem is well beyond Chuck with the Flyers I heard Bill Barber has a lot of say and Comcast sucks as owners. They need to tear it down from top to bottom. Get rid of Torts bring in an up and coming coach who is with todays game, bring in a GM who knows todays game and puts in some analytics and grab new owners who give a ****

Hinkie was working with Den for a bit and was apparently an absolute disaster. Morey isn't much better. It says a lot neither guy has had a GM type position since leaving Philly.

Howie sees Gainwell as a 3 down back. They haven't believed in Sanders for long term for awhile now. I heard if they weren't as good as they were Howie would've tried to offload him at the deadline if he could get more then what he'd get for a COMP Pick. Sanders isn't reliable with Ball protection like we saw in the Dal loss and almost in the SB and he's always had availability issues. Had Sanders fumbled and KC ran that back for a Score and he didn't play another down in the SB because he got hurt, it would've perfectly summarized Miles career here. Good at time but just not consistent and not always reliable.

They aren't getting an RB in the first unless someone drops to 31. Drafting an RB early isn't a good use of economical resources. Look at Elliot. I heard even if he got cut there's almost no market for the guy. he hasn't been great or consistent since '17. When he was needed in the playoffs he was a ghost. This RB class in the draft is deep as they come. Drafing one early isn't a good use for the Eagles. They can pick up the kid from UCLA or Zach Evans from Ole Miss on Day 2 get really good value day 3 if they draft the UK guy. If they have too get a veteran back late in FA.

Maybe if they need a back they go to the veteran market ladder. Theres just no need to draft a back early or overpay for one in FA this year.

Not sure honestly. Haven't heard or read anything indicating this. Last time we just promoted everyone from within it didn't work out so great. Wilson has never been a DC before, as Desai has, and I'm guessing they wanted or in this case Sirianni wanted a little more experience. Seems the league right now thinks the same as he was hired (Wilson) to be the DB coach of the Ravens today.

I think the biggest thing theyll be paying him for this year is leadership. If we let Cox, BG and Hargrave walk in the same year, that's a huge void at leadership on defense. BG is still the guy everyone else asks permission from before doing anything outside of the norm. Hope they get it done.

Howie Roseman said something last week at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis that I think has been misinterpreted or glossed over. Or at least, the full import of it wasn’t adequately weighed.
The #Eagles general manager noted that the team usually tries to sign a pending free agent or two during the season, to lower the stakes in March, and get a little more early certainty regarding the next season’s roster. He said he didn’t attempt that in 2022, because there were so many pending UFAs, and the season was going so well, he didn’t want to create discord by giving Player A a big new contract and not giving one to Player B, who might have considered himself equally deserving.
“We understood that could cost us in the end, but we felt like it was worthwhile because of the opportunity to potentially win a championship,” Roseman said. “Unfortunately, we came up short.”
Most of the references I’ve seen to these remarks have been along the lines of, “That makes sense, pretty smart of Howie not to mess with the locker room of a team headed for the Super Bowl.”
My take? Well, yeah, sure, but then there is that last sentence. “Unfortunately, we came up short.”
I think Howie meant, implicitly, “and now, we’re kinda screwed.”
Win the Super Bowl, you can do anything you want with your free agents. Don’t sign any of them if the bidding is crazy. Fans aren’t going to complain. You won the Super Bowl! For the second time in six seasons! And maybe, in the warm glow of the Super Bowl celebrations, one or two guys will tell their agents to do whatever it takes to keep them here.
Lose the Super Bowl, and none of that applies.
Fans aren’t going to be happy with at least a slightly less-talented team in 2023 – something that is just about guaranteed, from where I sit. And there is a strong possibility that this will be a significantly less-talented team, which REALLY won’t go over well.
Also, though the players no doubt enjoyed the remarkable season and the playoff run, the afterglow isn’t nearly as warm for the runners-up. I haven’t seen anybody who seems eager to take less money than the market might bear just to give it another try. That championship bond just doesn’t exist.
I think the Eagles can probably sign a few of their 19 pending unrestricted free agents, while also negotiating a state-of-the-art contract for Jalen Hurts. I would try for defensive tackle Javon Hargrave first, then either safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson or corner James Bradberry.
If neither of those can be brought back into the fold, I’d make a run at the other safety, Marcus Epps. I would slightly favor Bradberry over Gardner-Johnson, because good outside corners are harder to find than safeties, and the Eagles have a terrible recent draft history at the position. But Bradberry might get outlandish, top-tier money somewhere else, and unless he's playing zone, he isn’t THAT good.
Some of the names on that list, the Eagles weren’t going to offer contracts to anyway. Sub punter Brett Kern, backup tackle Andre Dillard, washed-up edge rusher Robert Quinn, wideout Zach Pascal — those guys are all but gone, and their absences shouldn’t create big holes.
There is another tier of player that will be harder to replace, but you knew all season they weren’t coming back. Guard Isaac Seumalo. Backup QB Gardner Minshew. LB Kyzir White. Late-season defensive line additions Ndamukong Suh and Linval Joseph. (Would I object to another one-year deal for either Suh or Joseph? No, I would not. But for right now, let's assume they are both gone.)
So that brings you down to 10 pending free agents. I’ve already said I would try hard to sign Hargrave and probably Gardner-Johnson. Miles Sanders should move on. It shouldn’t be that hard to bring back Boston Scott. I think Jason Kelce plays in 2023, and he isn’t signing anywhere else.
The big holes are going to be linebacker without T.J. Edwards, defensive tackle without Fletcher Cox, and pass rushing and general leadership without Brandon Graham. And again, I sure wouldn’t mind having Epps back at safety.
Somebody in that group is likely to be disappointed in the market, and ultimately could be brought back on a prove-it deal. Maybe Epps, maybe Graham, who turns 35 in April.
With six draft picks, including three in the first two rounds, I think the Eagles can patch and fill reasonably well. Maybe new defensive coordinator Sean Desai can deploy his talent more effectively against good quarterbacks than Jonathan Gannon did.
But as Roseman tries to navigate this rocky landscape, don’t be fooled. Howie wasn’t telling you how smart he was when he explained why he didn’t sign anybody to an extension during the season. He was telling you that choosing to not do so made his upcoming task much tougher than it might have been.

They did OK together while CJ was out, but they are both UDFA's which is fine and all, but they come with some obvious athletic/physical limitations compared to CJ.

Meh, I disagree with the bolded. Eagles have only used the franchise tag I think 4 times, and a couple times it backfired. And as you know, he has a big personality, it might've turned into a "thing" in the locker room with him pouting about not getting a chance to get paid. Howie is on the record basically saying "be prepared, we are going to lose guys" and the tag for the most part, IMO, is for teams that are not good at managing the salary cap. There is a chance we go into next years draft with (2) 2nd round draft picks, our own 3rd round draft pick, and possibly 2-4 compensatory 3rd round picks. Gotta play the long game, and I think he learned his lesson from "Lets run it back" after 2017.

I disagree this guys never been a problem anywhere. I get it older generation thinks you should just put your head down and work and take **** from the man. They see what the newer generation does as disrespect. This isn't political as much as more social real life issue btw. People are sick of being taken advantage of by bosses. Why work for a ****ty boss with low wages and almost no benefits when someone can offer better. All CJ did was say his boss AKA Department manager sucked and didn't put his employees in the best position to succeed. He's doing what any employees who had a bad boss who was replaced do. Complain how the old boss wasn't as good. I just had a girl a bit older then me leave because she spoke up to my bookkeeper in AUg. She ended up leaving and transferring stores. They called her drama and that she was the reason there was so much drama up at the Customer Service and registers. Turns out since she left the drama has continued and the main person is my book keeper who I found out from former coworkers of her at her old store they were incredible happy when she left. No different here.

I think the Eagles are a good team but not as close to as a lot believe. I think defensively we got away with a soft QB schedule this past year and Mahomes just exposed it in the SB. We got away with stuff defensively this year better QBs take advantage of. That isn't to say we suck overall or way worse though. I think we just took advantage of a very mediocre NFC this past year. Like Les Bowen writes our squad is gonna probably be less talented then it was this past year so I can see the team regressing

Blankenship and Epps is not terrible. But it's definitely a step down in talent. Especially if we lose Bradberry as well. Maybe Howie goes harder at keeping Bradberry now.

Bradberry is good but he won't be successful unless he's allowed to play zone

Maybe. Its a very strong safety free agent class, gotta believe Jesse Bates eats first. I do think he possibly has a "Lamar type" attitude on what his actual value is. From what I understand he already felt underdrafted and underpaid, so is definitely looking to cash in.

Meh, I disagree with the bolded. Eagles have only used the franchise tag I think 4 times, and a couple times it backfired. And as you know, he has a big personality, it might've turned into a "thing" in the locker room with him pouting about not getting a chance to get paid. Howie is on the record basically saying "be prepared, we are going to lose guys" and the tag for the most part, IMO, is for teams that are not good at managing the salary cap. There is a chance we go into next years draft with (2) 2nd round draft picks, our own 3rd round draft pick, and possibly 2-4 compensatory 3rd round picks. Gotta play the long game, and I think he learned his lesson from "Lets run it back" after 2017.

Except Chauncey isn't an old fart he's a younger player IMHO deserves to be paid. This isn't ALshon Jeffrey ETC guys almost Thirty and we need say thanks for your time but we wish you well in your future endeavors. This is one of the prime safeties in the league today and you are gonna just let him walk?

I don't get the love affair with the kelly green and I'm old enough to have watched both. The current is better IMO.

There's really one safety on the open market outside of CJGJ worth giving money too and that Nassir Aderley the Chargers player who's a local kid who played at Delaware and we too both Sanders and JJAW over and was picked a few picks later.

The Eagles only use it on players they haven't resigned. They are pretty good at resigning their key guys before they hit FA. If you saw the write up I posted from Les Bowen Howie explains how they didn't do it this year. You only IMHO use the franchise tag as a last resort and usually teams who do it the most have terrible cap management or managed terrible. You think if Ozzie Nesome was in BAL they'd be franchising Lamar Jackson? Newsome probably would've traded him already last offseason.

Hmm, no fair enough, that was an off the cuff remark, I haven't looked at the state of safeties around the league. Let me rephrase, I don't think he's worth a 4yr, 70-75 million dollar deal, like a top 5 safety should get. He'll likely get that, and I don't think that is commiserate with what he'd bring to the team.
