2023 Philadelphia Eagles - Complete waste of a season finally comes to an end. (8 Viewers)

Defense is a turnstile and offense has no confidence, whether it's the coaching, the players, or both. Maybe the "cupcakes" left on their schedule help them both get back on track, but it's just as likely they go from 10-1 controlling their own destiny for a 1-seed and the division to a 5 seed playing on the road in the WC round. That would be a pretty big fall and among the worst in team history. And if I'm in the NFL writer's room, I would punch up the script to include a devasting injury in W17 @ MetLife that happens only because we had to play the starters to still have a chance at the division because we also drop 1 of these next 3.
I generally agree, but regarding the bolded, I'd be shocked if that happens. They'd have to lose another game-probably to Seattle-and Dallas would have to sweep @BillS, @dolphins, Washington and Lions.

To be clear, I wouldn't be shocked if they lose to Seattle-I had them losing this game in the preseason prediction challenge. I'd be shocked if they lost that game AND Dallas swept the last four games. If Dallas loses one of those games, and we lost to Seattle, we'd still retain the #2.
Would you be completely shocked if the Eagles lose 2 out of their next 4?
honestly....yes

Defense will still be weak for a contender, but getting back to how they held up for the first 10 games will put them back into the conversation.

Also, remember the last two games have been against great offenses.
For the season, the defense ranks 26th or worse in most major categories. The last 2 games have just magnified how bad they are.

Points per game: 28th
Points per drive: 29th
Yards per game: 22nd
Turnovers Forced: 21st
Passing TDs allowed: 31st
1st Downs by Penalties: 26th
3rd Down Defense: 32nd
Red Zone Defense: 30th

Their best ranking is in rushing yards allowed, at 15th, but when you realize they were 1st after 6 games, that ranking is also pretty bad.

We look stinky across the board. Refs were poor this game. Dallas smoked us.

We need to get the defense on track for the playoffs. We need to get the play calling on track for the playoffs (kick the FG Nick!!).

All that said, Im not afraid of Dal in the playoffs. Im afraid of SF and (hopefully) Mia.
Before the last 2 weeks there was this lame drumbeat of "The Refs love Philly" to the point opposing fans were posting the names of refs like a criminal facing 4 felonies in different districts across the country posting the names of judges/family members and potential witnesses.

To a degree I am glad that narrative is killed. The refs just suck. I don't think anyone really wants to see 25 flags a game, just makes the whole game as a whole/the sport, just annoying to watch.
I would say refs have loved the Eagles most games. This Dal game was sooo one sided.

Crow: That said - the ref's didnt decide the outcome of this game. The Cowgirls smoked us.
What does the bolded mean? The way the pendulum of random refs calls have favored the Eagles in some sort of odds way where just we have benefited from it

or

There is some conspiracy with the refs to deliberately throw games toward the Eagles and thus "this issue should be looked into"

Its just funny to me bc there always seems to be some sort of explanation other than "They are good" to why the Eagles the last 2 seasons have been overall pretty successful.

And we are going into "weird" territory to kind of explain it away at this point IMO.
I cant remember a single Eagles game this season where I was annoyed at the refs. I do recall thinking "huh, we got that one"
I mean overall I just am annoyed in general. Do the people that watch NFL games want to see a guy get decapitated or paraylyzed? No.

But at the same time, do the new casual fans along with the hardcore guys like us also want to see 25-30 flags per game? Overwhelmingly "no" is my guess.

As much love as I like to give Howie Roseman, at the same time, like he has to be held accountable. Going after vets non stop to plug holes, in season guys, etc. Ignoring the LB position (hey he tried with Nakobe I guess, but did we even try to retain Edwards??) and just keeping the old guys around without truly replenishing the cupboard at all. The back 7 is just TERRIBLE this year. Sure we lost some guys but damn I didn't expect us to go from best pass D to ....this garbage.

I know the titles are just fun but no way is there a "collapse"

Yes, Eagles look to be 3rd best in NFC.

But hard to imagine an easier path to win out as no team in the league has a softer schedule to finish than Eagles. No team has a cushier path to 4 wins to close out.

They don’t face a team with a winning record the rest of the way. (Opponents combined record is 17-33).

Including Arizona and Giants twice.
Had the toughest strength of schedule from last year's teams. Kind of an earned benefit with the brutal stretch of games for the Eagles to face in a row, with the 2 toughest games having each opponent on 10 days rest. I appreciate you reminding us Eagles fans about when the schedule is easy though haha.

 the last four weeks are cupcake easy but I'm looking at the whole year. Projecting by last year's wins, it was a tough schedule. But it's much more realistic to look at Las Vegas odds and projected wins. In the more realistic view, they had the 10th easiest schedule. https://www.sharpfootballanalysis.com/analysis/2023-nfl-strength-of-schedule/
It's much more realistic to actually look beyond the win percentage/vegas win total numbers. Having that brutal stretch of games (KC off a bye, buffalo on a short week, SF off a mini bye, Dallas off a mini bye) is insane and needs to be accounted for in determining how tough a teams schedule is.

The 4 toughest games of the year were 4 weeks in a row, where all 4 weeks the other team had extra rest/preparation time. I bet every coach would say it's easier to have those 4 opponents spaced out and sandwiched between "cupcake" games.

How many of us were saying Slay and Bradberry were great to bring back? We all said if they can get 2 of the 3 back (CJGJ) it would be huge. Looks like their age was much further along than any of us imagined.

The LBs are totally on him. I get going cheap but there were better options than the trash heap. They bet everything on Dean being the answer and it's been killing them all year.

It’s the coaching. Just look at the DL for example. Nearly all the same guys and suddenly they can’t win or get to the QB.

I bet every coach would say it's easier to have those 4 opponents spaced out and sandwiched between "cupcake" games.

Obviously would be easier to spread them out. Fortunately, they have the 6-7 Seahawks on a 4-game losing streak and then 3 "cupcakes" to finish. Should go 4-0 to finish.

Yea at this point I think they lose to Seattle.
Not if Geno Smith is out. No way in hell we lose to Drew Lock and Co...
They played SF with a lot more heart then we did...
And Dallas
it's true, it was far from our best effort.

lattimore was in AJ's face all night, clearly got into AJ's head. man, dallas defensive guys were clearly trying to bully our receivers between plays. watching that, and reading this thread today about our defense as compared to last year, there is simply no swag on the Eagles side. last season there was a level of fire we loved seeing, CJGJ, Mailata, even Jalen getting after it, but last night and seemingly this entire season that "it" factor seems to be missing. what is it and how do they get it back? can we put it on Jalen as the team leader? or Cox & Reddick on the defensive side?

100%. What do you think a guy like Suh last year would have done if the SF team just walked through the defensive backs warm ups like they did last week?

What's with all the pessimism? Okay, they lost a couple games to great teams. They're still one of the title contenders. Did you expect to steamroll the entire league?

Better to lose games now and look a little lost than deal with this in January. They'll be fine.

(Not an Eagles fan. Just not sure why people think the sky is falling. Seattle is a get-right game, and you can count on the Cowboys dropping a game or two they should win).
They’ve struggled all year, haven’t put one great overall win together at all. The team has a lot of issues. They are lucky with the talent on the roster and some of the coaches they have they have the record they do _ lesser team would be barely .500 so that’s why all the gloom and doom. The talent on the roster makes it look better then it is

We’ve had our fair share of questionable calls go our way this year. I’m more objective on refs these days then bias and there’s been a ton of games I think we’ve benifited from a flag or a no call. I wouldn’t say we had as many last year as this year but it’s been pretty prevalent.

Should’ve just given CJGJ what he wanted allowed Bradberry to Walk and traded Slay rebuild secondary with CJ and Blankenship.

On the D Gunn report of an unnamed offensive player saying the offense is stale

We’re just getting started lol
It’s just the start. Well then get unnamed offensive player complaining about his touches and Hurts only focuses on one or 2 guys.
I’m gonna throw a dart at the board and say the unnamed player is AJ Brown. Jalen has overlooked open guys to force the ball to him, so he better not complain about touches. That bomb yesterday the Hurts dropped into his hands was a perfect example-there were open wrs that were an easier read. Brown dropped that one fwiw.

This is a great thread on the issues with the offensive game planning.

How to Fix the #Eagles Offense

The Passing Game
Jalen Hurts has an expected completion percentage of 61.6% this season, the 2nd lowest in the NFL. Hurts is presented with the 2nd most difficult throws on average in the entire NFL. If you want to know how to fix the offense, start with finding some easy buttons in the passing game. Hurts Completion Percentage Over Expectation is +4.9%, the highest in the NFL, which says that right now the system is making it as difficult as possible on the playmakers and the playmakers are performing above what is expected.

So what are those easy buttons?
Throw the ball between the numbers - The Eagles are 8th in yards per attempt and 6th in success rate when throwing between the numbers, but they are 30th in % of passes thrown between the numbers. Life gets much easier for a defense when they don't have to worry about covering 60% of the field.

Running Back Screens - The Eagles are 4th in the NFL in success rate on RB screens but they rank 28th in usage

Slants - The Eagles are 7th in success rate on Slants but they rank 22nd in usage

Curls - The Eagles rank 1st in success rate on Curls but they rank 28th in usage

The Running Game
QB Runs - There are 10 teams with at least 10 designed QB runs (sneaks excluded). The Eagles rank 10th in success rate (36.6%) and 7th in EPA/attempt (-0.08) but they have the 4th most such runs. Either Jalen Hurts is healthy and can run through contact or he isn't. If he is, then use him. If he isn't, stop calling runs for him and zone reads for him to slide down behind the line of scrimmage.

Pony Personnel - The Eagles have the 6th highest rushing success rate in the NFL out of Pony Personnel (2 RBs on the field). They have the 2nd lowest amount of rushing attempts from this package. (They also have the 3rd highest passing success rate from Pony Personnel but are 18th in usage).

Run Blocking - The Eagles offensive line ranks 18th in blown block percentage over the last 4 weeks. The OL is too good to be that bad. At a certain point you just have to execute.

Stop Turning the Ball Over - The Eagles have fumbled 9 times in the last 5 games and thrown 2 interceptions.

The Bottom Line
The Eagles offense has star players all over the field, but they have used them as a crutch instead of doing everything possible schematically to put them in positions to succeed. Everything that has been off with the offense can be fixed and it needs to be fixed fast.

The offense has a nice schedule of defenses to get their swagger back and figure out some things before the playoffs, when they need to be full throttle to carry a defense that is much harder to fix (more on that later).

I was most surprised by the expected comp rate to actual. Shows how well Hurts is throwing the ball. Now you can still argue about him making the right reads, but accuracy is no longer an issue for him.

So basically. Brian Johnson is the guy who plays Madden and just calls a bomb on every single play. Got it.

He needs to be replaced. God I hope we make at least a sort of deep run and someone foolishly hires him for a HC position, forcing us to change and also getting 2 3rd round picks along the way.

But I would be fine if we just fired him after the season if its a short dud of a playoff experience.

I was most surprised by the expected comp rate to actual. Shows how well Hurts is throwing the ball. Now you can still argue about him making the right reads, but accuracy is no longer an issue for him.
Yeah well if the reads are always extremely difficult throws, I guess that explains 1. why he holds the ball so long and 2. why it *looks* like he isn't reading the field well

The high to very high success rates versus their super low usage rate is so obvious when you watch the games, but I didn't realize it was as bad as it actually is. I have said (as well as others) that there ARE good play designs that poke their heads out once in a while, only to disappear after working. I keep coming back to the Jet Sweep that they've run twice with Swift. Both times he picked up a long first down, gaining 15+ yards. Great looking play that has been super successful when they ran it. Why has that only been used twice in 13 weeks?

Those numbers tell me there is a successful offense on this team, the play caller just need to get out of their own way and stop forcing the explosive play. The Derrick Gunn anonymous quote says what we've all been saying for ****ing weeks now, they keep running routes where the WR's aren't even turning their heads for 5 seconds! How can anyone expect Jalen to hold it for that long and be successful?

Why do players run their mouths? Coud come back to haunt.

San Francisco 49ers edge-rusher Nick Bosa said his team figured out how to shut down Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts.

"You see it on tape. Obviously, we put the blueprint out there. Hopefully, the Dallas Cowboys watch the tape," he told reporters. "We made Jalen stay in the pocket and escape outside instead of those B-gaps. And it paid off.
Was Bosa wrong? Did you watch the interview? The dude is about as low key as you can get.

I guess it can get twisted and blown up though, if you're trying hard enough.

Yeah, but "some people" still won't give him credit. This shows it wasn't a one year fluke.

basically. Brian Johnson is the guy who plays Madden and just calls a bomb on every single play. Got it.
I don’t remember you having a problem with the bombs every play when you were celebrating AJs record breaking stretch earlier this year
Oh he didn’t have a problem when it was working? Shocker lol

And I know you have a thing for him and that’s why you’re doing it 😜

You mean the 6 weeks where Brown was putting up a stat line of like 6/130/1 every single game? Why the **** would someone have a problem with that?

The Guy has the best Oline and WRS in the NFL yet somehow gets praised for putting up underwhelming QB #'s ... He threw for 22 TDs in his "MVP" caliber year ... 2 less than Daniel Jones rookie season playing behind the Worst Oline and WRS in the NFL ... I mean c'mon. He's on Pace for 25 TDs and 13 Ints and 5 fumbles lost ... still with the best oline and still with the best WRS and somehow he is still in the "MVP" discussion with guys that are on pace for 30 plus TDs and less ints on far worse teams!?!?!?

The Truth is Hurts is statistically a top 12 QB on easily one of the best teams in the NFL and all of his metrics are down this year.
If he was on a bottom 10-12 team he'd be a backup QB

He needs to be replaced. God I hope we make at least a sort of deep run and someone foolishly hires him for a HC position, forcing us to change and also getting 2 3rd round picks along the way.

But I would be fine if we just fired him after the season if its a short dud of a playoff experience.
Bomb and Deep out.

This puts into stats what I've felt all year. Our talent is carrying the team over the play calling.

How in the world does Swift have only 45 targets the whole year? He's 16th among RBs in targets behind guys like Stevenson, Ford, Tyjae ****ing Spears. Why would it not be mandatory to fit a Swift screen pass into the game plan every week?

Why have we gone away from the AJ slant? I bet if we looked at his 6 week, 125+yd run, we'd see a bulk of our slant yardage for the year was to him in those 6 games. It's an unstoppable play.

Why are all the routes 10+ yards down the field? Also very little motion and crossing action. It's all vanilla ****.

Johnson needs to really show something these last 4 games.

No worries buddy I looked it up. No wonder you are using stats from Daniel Jones' rookie year, since every year has been worse since then.

Passing Td's by year:

24
11
10
15

And then they signed him to a contract of $45M per season and this year it was

2 touchdowns and 6 INTs in....6 games, so he was pacing for 6 touchdown passes and 18 INTs this year.

Or by salary = $22.5M per touchdown pass.

You should sit down and not worry about how high ranked our QB is when this is your guy you paid a big contract to. And you still got at least next year before you can get out of it, so lol. That's funny.

I was watching a pod and they showed a graphic that traced every AJ Brown route last week. Nothing but go routes down the sidelines and not a single route across the middle. Just mind boggling

It usually doesn't even actually work in Madden either.

Also helps explain why they might be more successful in hurry up mode where Jalen is calling his own plays
