2023 Pittsburgh Steelers. Banged up team loses to Buffalo. Looking ahead to 2024 now (5 Viewers)

I know a bunch of folks had posted earlier about wanting him.  I just don't know.  He seems a lot like Haskins ... someone else's draft pick mistake that we are taking a chance will suddenly play better just because of a scenery change.  I hope I'm wrong.

Let them battle it out.  Two guys trying to reclaim their spots and another trying to prove he was held back by Ben being in front of him.

I have zero illusions about Mitch....but his 2nd year in the league was pretty much the sum total of Haskins entire career starting to date.

I think this says more about what they think of Rudolph internally (regardless of what they say externally).  Which is fine by me, since externally everyone pretty much knows he sucks.

I will say that they've seemingly acquired these qbs cheaply and 3 bad qbs is probably better than 1 bad qb

Bad front office: paying a premium in draft capital and salary space for a once highly drafted QB in hopes a change of scenery does him good. Ex. Carolina-Darnold

Good front office: grabbing ex first round RB's off the scrap heap for no draft capital and cheap salary in hopes a change of scenery does them good. Ex. Steelers-Trubisky/Haskins

You might be right on all 3 QB's being bad and up to this point for sure but I'm a fan of the approach.

If one points to Nagy as the main issue, then maybe some may think he's better than what he showed on the field. But, the QB I saw the last 2 seasons in Chicago couldn't pass downfield, was wildly inaccurate, and his decision making was beyond poor.

I guess he's going to set them up for a higher 2023 QB pick.

Well, I think the plan is try to see if one of these reclamation projects can hit.  If they don't, then we have a better pick in a better QB draft.  If they do hit, then we got a top QB without spending draft capital.

If that's all that comes from it, there is at least one fan that's totally okay with it. :)

Their defense is probably still too good for the team to completely bottom out, and their front office/staff/most of the fanbase is not willing to accept a "completely lost season" anyway.  IMO, this is an attempt to bridge a gap to a better QB class without completely flushing "competitiveness", IMO.  Whether that is worth doing is a legitimate topic for discussion, but to me it sure feels like that's what they're doing.

they still need to fix the o-line regardless
For sure.  And not being laser focused on a having to draft a quarterback in the first should help with that.  That's what I'm hoping, at least.

Picking up some OL help in FA along with this news would be the ####.

Dang, Cappa and Laken Tomlinson signing with the Bengals and Jets. Wonder if we're going to have a shot at any of the FA O-linemen that are decent.
Still a number of decent under-the-radar types out there on the interior (at least according to the site I'm checking).  Glowinski wouldn't be a bad get. Good run blocker, has an edge to him

Armstead still un-signed, fwiw ;)

I might be delusional but I think he can be decent with good coaching and a team around him. OL aside, he’s in better position to succeed now than Chicago. Definitely a risk worth taking, especially given the alternatives.

Sign Armstead.  Draft 2 of Linderbaum; Raimann; Penning; Johnson; Diesch; Faalele.

Faalele will get smoked like salmon in the NFL.   But I agree, hit the OL hard in FA and the draft.

James Daniels and Bozeman would be great, then draft OT(would Penning be too much to ask)?   If they are all gone, take DL, one should slip if all the OL are gone.

Hope Haden comes back on the cheap.   Still need CB.   And safety.

wow Folorunso Fatukasi reportedly signing with Jacksonville for a three-year, $30MM deal with $20MM fully guaranteed!

I like him a lot, but not at that price.

Jags signing Christian Kirk for 4 years, $84 million. That's insane. Per Schefter. That's more than Mike Williams got. The contract numbers might be crazy this offseason due to the increasing cap, maybe the cap numbers for 2023 and beyond are anticipated to get crazy, like $228 mil then $240+ mil. Means there's a lot more room for contract growth, and honestly I'd rather that $$ go to the players than the owners...

If they do hit, then we got a top QB
i have advocated for signing Trubisky as much as anyone, (i know you have frequently too),  but i think even if we massively upgrade the OL, it's optimistic to hope he could rank as QB # 23-25 next season.  but Ben was what # 32?

Rumors swirling that the Trubisky deal isn't for that much money and that he specifically chose the Steelers over the Giants. The basis for the rumors appears to be the fact that the $$ has not leaked yet, and that it almost always does for contracts worth bragging about. It could be because Trubs has a higher chance to start for the Steelers, or it could be because Trubs is expecting a baby and his fam is from Ohio, so in Pitt he's closer to fam.

Hoping the deal is less than $10 mil per year. Something like 2 years $15 mil with year 1 $5 and year 2 $10.

Have read a lot of comments criticizing the signing and not sure why. Did fans really think they were going to trade for Watson or get Rodgers?

most likely a team favorable contract that they can get out of after 1 year with not a lot of cap hit.

Am I super excited? No, but I think it was a solid signing considering the circumstances.

Because the average fan has 0 clue who is a free agent and who is not, or what the salary cap is. They just want whoever they see as the best QB and put on blinders.

that said, i just did some research.  in 2018, his 2nd year in the league, after only starting 1 year in college, when PFF ranked Chicago's OL # 22 in the NFL, Trubisky's QBR of 71.0 was third in the league behind only Mahomes 80.3, and Brees 79.2.

ahead of:  Ben 69.6,  Luck 69.6,  Brady 68.4,  Rivers 67.8,  Wilson 63.3,  Watson 61.8  and Rodgers 58.0.

so maybe miracles happen sometimes.

I mean, he is training/working with Pouncey.  They drafted him as Center -- so I think probably so.
The Steelers were heavily rumored to be interested in Jensen and Allen, so I don't think it was a given.

JC Jackson signing with Chargers, 5 years $82 million. Very weird that he's getting paid way less than Christian Kirk...

Carlton Davis expected to re-sign with Bucs, 3 years $45 million.

They had 0 cap room, not sure how they were able to bring back Jensen and Davis, and I don't like it lol.

At this point, who's left that we'd be interested in? Maybe some combo of:

  • Austin Corbett, G
  • James Daniels, G
  • Connor Williams, G
  • Jordan Whitehead, S
  • Juju
  • Charvarious Ward, CB
  • Levi Wallace, CB
  • Leighton Vander Esch, ILB
  • Bobby Wagner, ILB
  • Chuks
  • DJ Jones, DT
At this point, with us only signing 1 player I'd almost rather us just wait for FA to work itself out and sign people after they don't count for comp picks anymore. I don't think signing Killebrew, Maulet, or Witherspoon would count against the formula. And if Edmunds and Juju and Haden, or someone else, signs elsewhere we might be in line for a handful of picks. *Which we'll need if we're trading up for a QB next year

You know how I know you're a bad front office?

Garafolo reporting the Steelers have re-signed Chuks.
Meh.

I still like Glowinski at G a bit.  Certainly an upgrade in the run blocking department, and they're clearly committing to that from where I'm sitting, and pretty capable pass blocking.  Not 30 yet.

Highest win percentage by active QBs since 2018, minimum 25 starts:

Mahomes 49-13  (.790)

L Jackson 37-12  (.755)

Brady 47-18. (.723)

Rodgers 45-18-1  (.711)

Trubisky 25-13  (.658)

Per Shefter we just signed Mason Cole, C, formerly of the Vikings.

Vikings beat writer just echoed that report by saying he quietly played very well with Vikings.

Started 4/games at C and 3 at RG last year per some random internet guy.

Sounds  like he is a much better run blocker than pass blocker.

They need a CB big time, but the FA are thinning out
Yeah, a ton of teams do though, that's the rub. 😐

Hopefully they figure out whatever it is that has made them boner up so many evals at CB via the draft lately. (Although, I will allow that I still think Senquez was a balllller. Sucks he ripped his leg apart. Hell, that was forever ago now too.)

Saw this posted by elsewhere re: Cole....

"Cole is a former third-round pick of the Cardinals who was a starter two of his three years with the team. After being traded to the Vikings in 2021, Cole was expected to be the primary backup at both center and guard, but with Garrett Bradbury’s struggles, Cole saw increased playing time as the season progressed. He finished the season with 0 penalties and only 2 sacks in 471 offensive snaps. As a matter of fact, Cole is only responsible for 7 sacks and 12 penalties in 2,537 snaps in his NFL career. Those are incredibly solid numbers, especially for someone who is perceived by many as just an average starter at best."

Didn't not fact check it for veracity, so take it fwiw.

Yikes just saw the contract
Woof.  Same.

Guess Chuks has Will Blackwell's old locker?  Unearthed those old photos of Rooney effing a goat?

Assume they must think he's worth developing since he's still just 24.  That's an assload of cash for a "meh" RT, though.

I guess that spells cut city for Banner?

Apparently there was a bidding war and chuks let steelers match — and they did

Pff graded him as QB 37 that year. Just behind Blake Bortles

He isn't meh. He was terrible. He was graded as the 82nd highest T by PFF last year. He is a liability
