San Francisco 49ers: currently pick at #31 (22 Viewers)

John Lynch made an appearance on Sirius XM NFL Radio Wednesday morning and shared some updates and thoughts about quarterback Brock Purdy, who had his first throwing session earlier this week for the first time since his surgery.

Lynch said that the 49ers are “incredibly encouraged” by Purdy having his throwing session already: “He’s hitting all his marks, and that doesn’t surprise us because he’s putting in all the work.”

Lynch spoke about rushing Purdy back: “We are not going to put Brock in a situation where he’s not fully healed. That means not just get back, but get back and get in reps under your belt."

Per Nick Wagoner:

As #49ers QB Brock Purdy begins throwing this week a few things to keep in mind:

- He is neither ahead nor behind schedule. The expected window to begin throwing program off of UCL repair is 10-12 weeks. He's right in range.

- Throwing program is a slow buildup.

- Usually it begins with throwing a half-weighted ball and building up to throws with prescribed number of balls at fixed effort and distance.

- Final stages include mimicking a game week by throwing roughly the same number of passes an NFL QB would during the regular season.

- And again, there's no fixed timeline on when a throwing athlete who has had UCL repair will be cleared. The first person who ever had it was an HS pitcher in Alabama who was cleared in 5 months, 3 days.

Depends on how throwing program goes and the necessary time window.

This will be my last post about the Brock Purdy rule because I don't really care about it, I just post the articles that show up on my Niner sites.

For those of you who misunderstand the “why” of the Brock Purdy rule:

Cliffnotes: (spoiler: ratings)

the 49ers weren’t the ones who submitted the rule, the Detroit Lions did, and other teams supported it.

A 3rd QB would at least make the game watchable at-best and background noise while you did something else at-worst instead of just shutting it off. This is the league saying if San Francisco had a third quarterback, people would have watched from beginning to end.

When people don’t watch, all those ads businesses spent a pretty penny on are not seen and then everyone looks at the league like they just robbed them.

So none of this was because the 49ers complained about not having a third stringer. This was the Lions proposing that when you lose your starting quarterback you at least have a chance and a majority of teams agreeing because ratings wins, and the league passed it.
I literally turned it off after that first Josh Johnson "drive". And i'm a 49ers fan.

Wednesday OTA notes from Twitter

kicker update: Jake Moody made FG attempts from 33, 38, 43 and 53, while Zane Gonzalez missed from 43 and made kicks from 33, 38 and 48 yards.

49ers focused on pushing the ball downfield at today's OTA. Brandon Aiyuk caught 2 long TDs, one from Sam Darnold and one from Trey Lance

Sam Darnold took most of the 1st string QB reps today and completed 10 of 12 passes with one drop against a defense that was missing all but three starters. Trey Lance took most of the 2nd string QB reps and completed 6 of 12 passes with three drops and one 40 yard completion.

- Lot of passes bobbled, dropped
- Lot of incidental contact by CB Lenoir
- Lot of times Kyle Shanahan yelled at a guest (NFL? NFLPA?) to get off his field
- Aiyuk couple sweet catches
- Deebo showed, DNP
- No Bosa, Trent,.or Javon Hargrave

Aiyuk: I'm about to take off.

Brandon Aiyuk is entering his fourth NFL season and is looking to top his 78-catch, 1,015-yard, and eight-touchdown performance from last season. All were career highs. San Francisco exercised its fifth-year option on the receiver, keeping him under contract through the 2024 season.

What are the expectations for 2023?

"I'm about to take off," Aiyuk declared. "That's it. ... We all know it's football. Nothing's ever guaranteed, but just getting a better understanding for my life as a person, and then as a football player, kind of putting those things together and then just looking to get better.

"I feel like, now, having another offseason [to build upon], coming out here again for another OTA spring ball, whatever you want to call it, being able to work with those guys, being able to work on my craft, being able to get better and just continue to look to get better. That's really it."

Aiyuk believes he's "for sure" been underrated in his three NFL seasons.

That's been my whole life," he said. "That's just how it's been. But I feel like it's supposed to be that way. That's what keeps me going. That's what keeps me motivated, keeps me angry."

Barrows on Wednesdays OTA:

The offensive standout was Aiyuk, who practiced only sparingly last week but who seemed to make a big play whenever he stepped on the field Wednesday. He also had a 40-plus-yard reception down the sideline over rookie cornerback Darrell Luter Jr. on a nicely thrown pass from Lance in seven-on-seven drills.

This team isnt messing around, theyre ready to get to work and go get that 6th Lombardi.

49ers cancel final week of OTAs, move up minicamp dates

The San Francisco 49ers announced today that they are canceling the third and final week of organized team activities (OTAs) and moving up their mandatory minicamp to next week.

The team's mandatory minicamp was initially scheduled to begin on June 13 and run through June 15. It will now begin on June 6, with practices at 10:40 a.m. PT on Tuesday and 10:50 a.m. PT on Wednesday. Both sessions will be open to the media.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan and select players are scheduled to speak with reporters on Tuesday, and defensive coordinator Steve Wilks and players will field questions from the media on Wednesday.

Initially scheduled to be a three-day minicamp, the 49ers will likely give players the third day off from practice, as they have done in previous years, and hold a family day before breaking for the summer. Veteran players won't report back to the team until training camp begins in late July.

Many of the younger players, including the rookies, will stick around the facility during the break.

Sounds like Purdy will be ready to go.

Matt Maiocco:

Brock Purdy began throwing a regulation NFL football on May 29. If the anticipated 12-week ramp-up program holds true, he would receive full clearance on (or around) on Aug. 21 -- or 20 days before the regular-season opener.

Put a fork in lance...what do you do with that guy now???
With SFs QB injury history, he will prob be QB1 at some point this season.

If Purdy plays the full season this year Lance is almost worthless. Rookie contract and is potentially good to have as a backup but if he doesn't play the 49ers just keep him on his rookie contract and let him walk i suspect...

The 49ers have wrapped up their minicamp. The next time the players will hit the practice field will be at the end of next month, during training camp.

Final minicamp tidbits:

Kyle Shanahan clearly pleased with the final practice. High energy on the field. A lot of laughter as Shanahan addressed the team in the final breakdown. Next step at the facility: training camp. Plenty of individual work remains before then.

49ers Deommodore Lenoir and Brandon Aiyuk go way back to Pac-12 days... said they've had their battles since college, and now, on the same team, BA is the toughest receiver to cover during OTAs. He later said Aiyuk "is going to be a top-5 receiver in the league this year. He's going to put everyone on notice."

Lenoir on Steve Wilks: "He’s like the godfather of the DBs."

- Said he appreciates how he corrects mistakes hands on in a way that builds players up rather than "breaking you down"

Last day of 49ers OTAs practice was a showing of what K Jake Moody is capable of. He nailed what looked to be an approximately 60-yard field goal attempt - after which he raised his hands in excitement.

49ers DC Steve Wilks says Ambry Thomas "had a great OTAs and minicamp" — but says that the padded practices of training camp will be the major test of his physicality. "I'm very confident he can get it done."

49ers QBs today in 11-on-11s:
First-team QB Trey Lance: 4-8 (one drop)
Second-team QB Sam Darnold: 4-8 (two drops)
Third-team QB Brandon Allen: 1-8 (one drop)

Kerry Hyder Jr. pick-6 of Trey Lance. Lance threw it right into his stomach at point-blank range and Hyder somehow held onto it and took it to the house. 49ers defense went wild.

Bosa on Javon Hargrave:

"I'm super excited. We've been watching tape on him the past few years in Philly, and I think every time we watched him, [defensive line coach] Kris [Kocurek] raves about him or would rave about him. And we think of him as one of the best interior guys in the league, especially rushing passers. To have him on our side is going to be a huge addition for us."

Even though Hargrave was a top free agent, the 49ers pass rusher still feels like his new defensive tackle teammate is underappreciated.

"With all the talent we have on our team, to add a guy who's the top free agent ... to get the top guy, and a guy that I feel like people give him his due, but people don't really know how good he is overall," Bosa said. "... I feel like he isn't quite talked about in the Aaron Donald, top-echelon, Chris Jones [type players], but I think he played like that last year, and throughout his career.

"Him and Arik inside should be pretty fun."

Slowly getting ready to ease myself back in. Last year was about as a big a disappointment as I can recall, maybe even more so that the Ravens SB or Seahawks NFCC Game.

I’m finally ready to put it behind me and getting ready to watch the 2023-2024 season.

The 49ers offense led the NFL in 30+ yard plays last season

While the 49ers may have fallen just short of their ultimate goal in the 2022 season, one thing that they can hang their hat on was their ability to generate explosive plays on offense.

They registered 33 offensive plays that went for at least 30 yards, which led all teams in the NFL. The only other teams who eclipsed 30 such plays were the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles, who were the final two teams standing before squaring off in an epic Super Bowl in the desert.

Given the fact that the 49ers started three different quarterbacks during the regular season, who exactly was the driving force behind this offensive output?

While all three quarterbacks who started had success generating these explosive plays, one stood out above the rest regarding the rate that these 30 plus yard plays were generated.

Prior to Brock Purdy’s first career start in Week 14, the 49ers had played 12 games. They averaged 1.5 plays of 30 plus yards over those first 12 games when Lance and Garoppolo were starting.

In the five games that Purdy started to close the season, the rate of those 30 plus yard plays nearly doubled to an average of 2.8 per game. Now it is important to note that five of the 14 plays that came in Purdy’s starts were rushing attempts, this is not a stat that is intended to give him sole credit for the uptick in offensive output.

Below is a list of the skill position players and how many of these 30 plus yard plays they recorded a touch in:

George Kittle - 6
Christian McCaffrey - 5
Deebo Samuel - 4
Brandon Aiyuk - 4
Jeff Wilson Jr. - 3
Ray-Ray McCloud - 3
Jauan Jennings - 2
Ross Dwelley - 2
Elijah Mitchell - 1
Jordan Mason - 1
Kyle Juszczyk - 1
Tevin Coleman - 1

Here is the full list broken down into more specific categories:

Run/Pass
Passing plays - 22
Running plays - 11

Quarterbacks
Jimmy Garoppolo - 12
Brock Purdy - 7
Trey Lance - 2
Christian McCaffrey - 1

Rushing plays
Christian McCaffrey - 3
Jeff Wilson Jr. - 3
Deebo Samuel - 2
Jordan Mason - 1
Elijah Mitchell - 1
Ray-Ray McCloud - 1

Receiving plays
George Kittle - 6
Brandon Aiyuk - 4
Deebo Samuel - 2
Ross Dwelley - 2
Ray-Ray McCloud - 2
Jauan Jennings - 2
Tevin Coleman - 1
Kyle Juszczyk - 1

Interesting comparison by David Lombardi. Have the 49ers finally found and replaced DeForest Buckner's production? Take a look:

Via Twitter:

49ers' sack rates and rankings by season:

2017: 5.0% — #29
2018: 6.9% — #19
2019: 9.0% — #2
2020: 5.3% — #24
2021: 8.0% — #4
2022: 7.0% — #15

Do they have the personnel and depth necessary to return to 2019 — or at least 2021 stretch run — levels? Hargrave + Bosa is big.

Can the 49ers field their best pass rush of this regime in 2023?

Javon Hargrave has been a better pass rusher than DeForest Buckner, so that'd be a big first step to challenging the 2019 line.

It might come down to DE spot opposite Nick Bosa.

Javon Hargrave - DeForest Buckner comparisons. Worth noting Hargrave's pass-rush productivity has been consistently above Buckner's. Top 3/4 vs Top 10 DT:

HARGRAVE
2019: 7.7 #4
2020: 6.7 #6
2021: 8.0 #4
2022: 8.0 #3

BUCKNER
2019: 6.6 #8
2020: 6.5 #9
2021: 5.6 #15
2022: 6.6 #8

John Lynch at 49ers' State of the Franchise reiterated that, even though SF finished with the NFL's #1 defense in 2022, there was some slippage in performance on that side of the ball.

The data actually agrees (49ers' interior DL was weak). SF is committed to another #1 finish in defense — but by a bigger margin this season. That's what the Javon Hargrave investment is about.

Watch the entire 49ers 2023 State of the Franchise event featuring Al Guido, Jed York, John Lynch, Kyle Shanahan, Steve Wilks, Chris Foerster, Brian Schneider, Jake Brendel, Fred Warner and Kyle Juszczyk:

Watching the state of the franchise and one takeaway, our defense is gonna be NASTY. Everyone talks about the offense and QB, but this defense is gonna be something else.

If Drake Jackson and/or Clelin Ferrel can just be good (not even great), there wont be a better d-line in the league, and I'll almost feel bad for opposing QBs. Almost.

I still think they need to add an edge rusher. Still a few sitting out there that could help. Ngakoue, Ingram, Justin Houston

Most Playoff Wins since 2019:

Chiefs, 10 (12 games)
49ers, 6 (9 games)
Bengals, 5 (7 games)
Rams, 5 (6 games)
Buccaneers, 5 (7 games)

It’s frustrating that #1, #4 and #5 have Super Bowls in this span.

Have to imagine the 49ers and Bengals’ time is coming.

Since 2019, Kyle Shanahan is 42-24 (63.6 winning %) with 6 playoff wins and a SB appearance.

Take a deep dive into Shanahas system.

Shanahan Schemes

Digging into one of the NFL’s best designed offenses

The 49ers' defense wasn't just the best by EPA per play last year, it was the best by a long way.

The gap to the Cowboys is pretty crazy when you consider the Niners didn't really have anybody providing consistent pressure after Bosa.

Javon Hargrave is joining this defense.

Defense EPA per play

1. SF (-0.112)
2. DAL (-0.087)
3. NE (-0.085)
4. PHI (-0.063)
5. WAS (-0.059)
6. NYJ (-0.045)
7. BUF (-0.045)
8. CIN (-0.043)
9. DEN (-0.042)
10. NO (-0.035)

Speaking of Hargrave, here's a list of players who had the biggest difference of their defense's performance when on the field vs. when they were off the field. Hargrave is #2 on the list:

Punter Mitch Wishnowsky tweaked his back while lifting weights and will start camp on the NFI list. Lynch said its nothing they're too worried about and are NOT bringing in a camp leg.

The 49ers will integrate Brock Purdy's throwing program — the QB hasn't thrown three days in a row yet since his surgery — into training camp. So Purdy actually won't practice on Wednesday when SF first takes the field as part of this throwing schedule, but he'll be QB1 Thursday.

- Lombardi per Twitter/X

Per Lombardi:

First practice QB numbers during 11 on 11 drills

Trey Lance: 4-5
Sam Darnold: 2-4
Brandon Allen: 0-3

Lance also had a nice run to escape a collapsing pocket. He beat a good blitz with a solid sideline throw to Brandon Aiyuk. The one incompletion also almost beat a blitz but the 49ers defense is very good — Fred Warner was double-covering Samuel 20 yards downfield.

For first practice of camp, that was spirited. Two solid trash-talking sessions — one between Brandon Aiyuk and Deommodore Lenoir after a catch, one between Talanoa Hufanga and Danny Gray after a sweet PBU on a deep shot.

Remember, no pads on yet. Competitive start for 49ers

Lombardi:

We saw two aggressive DB blitzes from new 49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks on Day 1 — one from Talanoa Hufanga and one from Isaiah Oliver.

Remember that Wilks' blitz rate as a DC has been much higher than the 49ers' blitz rate under Saleh and Ryans

Brock Purdy is cleared and will not go on the teams’s PUP list.

"Brock's cleared and ready to go.
He's cleared and without restriction. The great news is he's ready to go." — John Lynch

Hell of a story......hope it continues for him. 7th round pick. I mean....yeah...great story. How can you not root for a guy like this.

Philip Rivers might've started Super Bowl for 49ers if they won NFC championship game

The 49ers were probably not going to beat the Philadelphia Eagles once quarterback Brock Purdy went down with a torn UCL in the first quarter of the NFC championship game. If they had pulled off a miracle and won the game, it would’ve led to perhaps the biggest story in NFL history.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan told the Athletic’s Tim Kawakami that veteran QB Philip Rivers was one of the potential options to start the Super Bowl for San Francisco.

With neither Trey Lance nor Jimmy Garoppolo on track to be healthy enough to play, the 49ers’ head coach was ready to pull out all the stops.

“Whole thing I’m just thinking is, ‘Man, I hope Brock’s not as bad as they’re saying and what’s going to be our Plan B? Are we going to have to get Philip Rivers, someone like that, for the Super Bowl?’” Shanahan told Kawakami.

“Because that’s what I’m thinking. ‘Cause I didn’t think Jimmy was going to be ready and all I’m thinking is, ‘Man, I hope Brock is not bad as bad as they’re saying and someone like Philip Rivers is working out and ready to go here in two weeks because that’s still our plan.’ And when I accepted reality, it took me a while to get over.”

Reports from camp:

Lombardi:

Shanahan and the 49ers coaching staff seem thrilled with Drake Jackson’s offseason of work. He’d added nearly 15 pounds at the time of OTAs and then actually elected to stay at the team facility and work out over the 40 days prior to training camp.

Rohan C:

Kinlaw looked as good as he's been since with the 49ers, moving well and showcasing his explosiveness in the first offseason where he's truly been healthy without having to worry about fixing any issue.

.......

Deebo in the best shape since 2019, Drake all beefed up and chomping at the bit, Kinlaw looking good early for a change...I'm liking a lot of what I'm hearing so far.

Just a hunch but I think Clelin Ferrell is going to have a nice year. If he gets 5 sacks it will be a career high (he had 4.5 as a rookie in 2019), I think he has at least 5 this season.

Camp day 1 standouts on offense:

Camp day 1 defense breakdown:

5 players to watch day 2 of 49ers training camp: Purdy, Davis Price, Drake Jackson, Jaylon Moore, Jake Moody

From twitter:

Stats from today’s 11-on-11s:

Brock Purdy: 3/7, INT, 2 sacks
Sam Darnold: 2/5
Trey Lance: 2/5

Overall, a very underwhelming offensive performance for the 49ers today

Purdy started out rough, but had a better 2nd team session

Purdy got all of the 1st team reps

Darnold/Lance split 2nd team reps

Thoughts on day 2 from a few 49er beat writers via Twitter (Lombardi, Rohan, Barrows)

Jake Moody continues to show off his booming leg. The 49ers' rookie kicker was 6-of-6 today, and each one of his kicks cleared the crossbar by a huge amount.

Best-looking rookie today? Jake Moody, who was a smooth 6-6 on FG attempts. His 48 yarders look like PAT attempts.

Brock Purdy's most impressive throw in his return today came on a 20-yard completion to Brandon Aiyuk. Purdy threw a heater that Aiyuk leapt up to grab — plenty of velocity on that throw and many others

DL had a good day today. Austin Bryant and Kerry Hyder rotated in with Clelin Ferrell with the first-team defense.

Bryant and Drake Jackson flashed, working against Trent Williams and winning some reps. That Drake Jackson bend is real, man.

A lot of fist-pumping from new 49ers D-coordinator Steve Wilks on the practice field. D-line coach Kris Kocurek was also frequently fired up. SF obviously feels very good about its defense and the unit showed out during today's session.

Javon Kinlaw made some big plays vs run

Run game looked strong early on with the first team. Great day for Elijah Mitchell. Him and Jordan Mason were running hard all day.

Brock Purdy says he has no leftover physical limitations following his elbow surgery and also said "There's obviously some rust that I have to work off"

#1 D Line loading....

New defensive coordinator Steve Wilks has been around the NFL for a long time, having had a number of coaching stints as a head coach, defensive coordinator, or defensive backs coach since making his debut in the league in 2005. He told reporters Thursday that the 49ers have an embarrassment of riches on the defensive line he didn't see at any of the stops he made on his way to San Francisco.

"I've probably never been around a group like this on defense, particularly up front," Wilks said, later elaborating, "When I say having been around a group like this, that's what I mean -- a group. I mean, we have depth. And it's not when one guy comes out that you feel like, okay, we're going to drop off. No, not at all."

Wilks is without his top defensive lineman at the moment -- defensive end Nick Bosa, who is holding out while awaiting a new contract -- but he still has a wealth of talent and experience to work with in players such as Arik Armstead, Javon Hargrave, Drake Jackson, Kevin Givens, Clelin Ferrell, and Javon Kinlaw, among others.

"The depth that we have across the board, inside and out, man, that's what I'm talking about," Wilks said. "I've never been around anything like this."
