It's outrageous, IMO, that the Ohio Valley Conference Championship Game, between the #1 and #2 Seeds, no less, is currently being upstaged on ESPN2 by the end of an SEC Women's Basketball Tournament Semi-Final, that's bleeding over into their tip off. A Men's Division 1 Conference Championship Game that's going to result in a Tournament Bid is on the ESPN app, while no one is watching this garbage except family, friends and people tuning into ESPN2 to watch a big Men's game and wondering what the F*** is going on.

Man... best time of the year for basketball. Love this. NBA has NOTHING on these games. Actual basketball being played with actual refs calling actual basketball calls with actual defense and effort being played on the court. Love it.

This is a prime example of why I don’t think I could stomach coaching college hoops. Eighteen year olds making boneheaded decisions like stepping into the lane for no reason down one with four seconds to go would cause permanent ulcers.

Boise State pulled it off against New Mexico. My brother, who lives in Boise, was visiting and we caught the game. They're not very good, but the win was fun.

I used to feel the exact same way. I’m not a big NBA guy mainly because I didn’t grow up near a team. I was given a Suns ticket several years back, some meaningless middle of the season game. I was kind of high up and could see the whole court at once and what I discovered was that my whole attitude about nobody in the NBA playing defense was incorrect. They WERE playing defense but the guys they’re guarding are just REALLY REALLY good. All of them. Was such a different perspective. I still don’t have a team or really follow the league but I tossed my previous generalizations out of the window.

The FIBA rule makes the most sense - if the free throw is made, a lane violation is disregarded as it has no effect.

College, youth and women’s sports can be as or more entertaining and enjoyable for spectators than the pro versions as we all know. Any fan can have a valid opinion that March Madness is superior entertainment over anything the NBA offers, but I agree that @Chadstroma’s comments about the college basketball, defense and refs being “actual” as contrasted with the NBA don’t hold water.

The defense in the nba is insanely good but when you have playmakers like Luka, Jokic, SGA…I mean come on. It’s just impossible.

I like both the NBA and NCAAB.
My wife will watch college ball with me, but she hates the NBA and won't watch it. She used to play ball in high school and she makes the same argument about defense in the NBA.
I have this argument we're having here with her all the time. They play defense in the NBA, but the guys are just so insanely good offensively there is just literally no way to stop them sometimes.
That said, objectively, even as someone who does like the NBA and defends it, the level of effort is objectively quite a bit lower sometimes. I don't blame them for it. 82 games is a freaking lot, and these guys aren't all 21 anymore. It's hard to play hard (8 minutes longer per game, no less) for that long. And the games in the middle of the regular season just aren't that important a lot of times.
I guess what I'll say is this. If you compare some random middle of the regular season NBA game to a playoff NBA game there is a stark difference in effort. Guys are clearly sand bagging it a bit in the regular season (I mean, are we really going to argue in the midst of load management games that the players aren't doing a fair bit of load management even in the games they play? Of course they are). But if you compare Florida vs. South Carolina on some random Tuesday in January, those guys are playing just as hard as they are in March Madness. It's fewer games, they're younger, many of them know this is all they have and their careers aren't going to extend beyond these games, etc.
So I guess I'd say the truth is kind of somewhere in between. I think it's true that guys are playing harder (especially on D) in the regular season in NCAAB than in the NBA, but it's not nearly to the level people have dramaticized it too, as NBA players are often just so good offensively that it makes the D look bad. And once you get to the playoffs its a moot point as the NBA guys are giving 110% in the playoffs.
On the flipside, I do agree with the point that foul calls are weak as hell in the NBA. That's the only thing that frustrates me about the league. I wish they'd just let them play this contact sport without blowing the whistle every single time an offensive player initiates contact.

So sad for the team too... they made a great run to get back in it. Looked like they would most likely have tied and gone OT barring a last few seconds shot from Duke. That is sports though. Feel bad for that young man. Imagine how he feels.

I don't care who likes it or not. Best basketball is played now until the Champions are crowned in college.
The NBA product is unwatchable. I don't like that, it sucks, basketball was my favorite sport growing up. Loved the NBA. Went to a million Clippers and Lakers games and would watch every game I could. It is just painful to watch now. I have try to watch games... usually pick up the last parts of some playoff games but I don't know when I was able to watch a whole game. I am just not a fan of the street ball devolving of the game.
I am not alone. NBA attendance and viewership has declined while the NFL keeps growing. It isn't by accident.
Granted the Luka trade to Lakers helped rekindle interest but there are real reasons why interest needed to be rekindled in the first place. The product isn't better than what is was... It much less than what it use to be.

I could go on and on about why I view the NBA as an inferior product. It's my opinion. I don't need to convince anyone else of it and I know I am not on an island on this.
College basketball is awesome and the level of awesome gets jacked up even more now with the conference championships going into the tournament. Love it.

Street ball = how we play the game at the park in pick up games. No refs so you call your own calls and almost never is a travel called and certainly not a carry. Often an emphasis on one on one play versus team ball since you often are playing with guys you don't usually play with. Emphasis on the "wow" factor to ooo and aaa those watching versus playing good fundamental bball.
The ony thing that is opposite in street ball versus NBA is calling fouls. Since you basically had to draw blood to call a foul or you would be called weak. Now it seems the NBA refs jobs are deciding which ticky tack foul is a fragrant 1 or 2.
That is what street ball is. Nothing to do with race but some always love to jump to racist card on things that they don't agree with.

If anything, the people that have complained this year about the NBA have more of an issue with the game moving away from street ball. More ball movement, more threes.
This is the worst part of the season for the NBA with bad teams tanking and good teams trying to stay healthy. Comparing the most exciting part of the college basketball season to the most boring part of the NBA season is always funny to me.
