I mean, sure the current system isn't great. But this dude was fine coaching when he was making millions and his players were making zero. But now THIS is what he chooses to take a stand over?
He isn't taking a stand. He admitted he was unable to coach well in the current environment and that the players deserved more. That's not a stand. It's an admission he isn't the right man for the job anymore. He said his assistants have been hiding his ineptitude at dealing with NIL, agents, etc.
Tony Bennett may run a boring offense. But the guy is pure class (and I'm a VT guy). Much like Jay Wright and Roy Williams were. Times have changed. And they admit it and move on. I can guarantee you that any Virginia public school college coach is making far less than they could on the open market. Our state govt and the boards of any school (except Liberty which is private) is highly adverse to paying coaches what they are worth on the open market.
I do think he timed it to protect his assistants. Another show of respect for those that were by his side.
I do find it intriguing that the UVA football and basketball coach both retired in the last 2 years. Maybe UVA as a whole is not good with NIL. Their non-revenue sports are excellent. It's tough to get in. I think the thing to read into that is SEC and B10 schools have enormously more alumni $s to chase revenue sport championships, and with the exception of Vandy and NW, far lower academic expectations.
