2024-2025 NCAA College Basketball Thread - Huskers take the Crown! Also Florida did something. (2 Viewers)

I remember some chatter that Bennett might leave at the end of last season, but didn't give it much credence. I guess I should have.

Fantastic coach and, from all accounts, a great guy.

So to re-phrase his own words which he said much nicer .... "he's not the right guy to be a coach in this environment." and "college athletics is in a bad place". He said he is for athletes making money, but that the current structure or lack thereof is a failure. So the fallout from NIL and the self-incflicted continued demise of the NCAA results in the end of another excellent teacher of young men and head coach.

The odd thing is that he had a hell of a transfer haul coming in. The other odd thing is the timing and I'm wondering if he wasn't trying to tie UVA's hands so they had to promote the assistant he's good friends with.

I mean, sure the current system isn't great. But this dude was fine coaching when he was making millions and his players were making zero. But now THIS is what he chooses to take a stand over?

Yeah pretty sure the timing was calculated to get his assistant a year long audition.

Not surprising he's done. Can't imagine being a coach in this environment. Having to deal with "NIL Agents", your players being recruited in the handshake line, not what these old school guys signed up for. I'm honestly SHOCKED that someone like Izzo is still hanging around.

And of course, the mouth breathers on Twitter are going with the "guess he doesn't like coaching now that he's not running a slave plantation" narrative. But pretty much every coach is more than ok the guys getting some cash. They just think the combination of that plus unlimited, immediate transfers (which has led to "student athletes" playing at 4 schools in 4 years) is absurd.

He isn't taking a stand. He admitted he was unable to coach well in the current environment and that the players deserved more. That's not a stand. It's an admission he isn't the right man for the job anymore. He said his assistants have been hiding his ineptitude at dealing with NIL, agents, etc.

Tony Bennett may run a boring offense. But the guy is pure class (and I'm a VT guy). Much like Jay Wright and Roy Williams were. Times have changed. And they admit it and move on. I can guarantee you that any Virginia public school college coach is making far less than they could on the open market. Our state govt and the boards of any school (except Liberty which is private) is highly adverse to paying coaches what they are worth on the open market.

I do think he timed it to protect his assistants. Another show of respect for those that were by his side.

I do find it intriguing that the UVA football and basketball coach both retired in the last 2 years. Maybe UVA as a whole is not good with NIL. Their non-revenue sports are excellent. It's tough to get in. I think the thing to read into that is SEC and B10 schools have enormously more alumni $s to chase revenue sport championships, and with the exception of Vandy and NW, far lower academic expectations.

Seems like an A+ guy but nobody will miss watching his teams play. Horrible ball.

One of the things I like about college ball is the contrast of styles. There's more variation on offense compared to the NBA although probably less than there was in college a decade ago. Maybe there are just more subtle differences these days and I'm too dumb to recognize them. This I blame on being a Wisconsin fan and watching the Badgers run the swing for 28 seconds before hoisting up a shot worse than the one they passed up 10 seconds before.

Didn't see one. It's about that time.

Tony Bennett suddenly retires from Virginia

Just signed an extension a few months ago - hope he's ok.
Damn. The sport will miss him

I may consult with you on thread title changes this year, fyi. Please send me a quote for services rendered.

One suggestion would be to add NCAA somewhere in the title to make it easier to search for.

No charge

I went to his dad’s b-ball camps long ago in WI. Met late high school / early college Tony back then. He was a super polite and nice guy. Ran into him at local restaurants a few times. Always classy.

Random: he’s also still the all-time NCAA career 3-pt percentage leader at 49.7%, and he made over 50% of threes both his junior and senior years at UW-Green Bay. It was agonizing to watch them lose to Mich St in 1991 on a last second shot by Steve Smith.

Does the NCAA still exist?

They made a billion last year on TV rights alone

The thing about Bennet's style of play, at least judging from watching his dad's teams and Bo Ryan's teams run a similar system in Madison for many years, is that its hard to do with one/done guys no matter how good they are. I know he's had several of those in recent years and my guess is maybe it makes it difficult and he correctly believes his style is not as effective in the modern game. Its probably hard luring top talent in the portal when they know they have to play balls-out defense and then make 10 passes on every offensive possession.

I'm not sure that's it at all. He had just landed the highest HS recruit he ever got. He also has put a bunch of guys in the NBA - none are stars, but they have stuck around.

I feel good about the upgrades Cincinnati made with the transfers they brought in. Excited for the season.

UCF knocks off a ranked Texas A&M and then stormed the court. Ohio State beats a ranked Texas. Not a great start for the Lone Star state.

Boiler Up

Edey leaves and enter 7' 4" freshman Daniel Jacobsen. He started in their first game last night. 13 points and 7 boards.

Guard play is going to be the key this year as Loyer and Smith are back starting as juniors for their third season in a row. Plus 2 new freshman guards including big dog Robinson's kid Gicarri Harris. Will be interesting to see how this team comes together without Edey.

What a spanking of Baylor from the Zags. If this game was an indication... they got some defense to go with their offense and that is dangerous for other teams.

It's been said before, but there is tremendous optimism about this Zags team. Their depth is just insane. Foul trouble will never be a real problem with this team. There appears to be no glaring weakness with this team as there have been with other hyped up Zag teams of the past. They better get it done this year because they will have a lot of guys transferring out next year because there aren't enough minutes to go around.

They kind of had the pieces last year but they were mostly new and needed time to gel.

They dismantled a very good Baylor team. In two months, we will have a really good idea if this team is just another Sweet 16 disappointment in the works or actually breaking through to that Championship win.

Arizona St (good unranked team)
SD State (good unranked team)
Kentucky (23)
UConn (3)
UCLA (22)

They didn't go easy on the non-conference schedule. Then in conference they will play Saint Mary's another good unranked team. We shall see in these games what we should really expect. If they play like they did against Baylor then daaaaaaaaaamn.

Gonzaga is certainly scary, but they wont prove it by beating Arizona state. They might be the worst major conference team in America.

Duke beat them by 56 in a scrimmage and their starters only played half the game.

AZ St still getting a few votes in the rankings but even saying you are right and they are a walk over team... they still have a good amount of challenges in non-conference play.

Gonzaga always does this with the non-con to offset playing in the WCC and beef up their resume. Lots of these are away or semi-away too. Last year this backfired because while they had talent, they didn't gel early and lost all these tough non-con games. They should cruise by all of these teams this year with the exception of UConn (playing at MSG).

We will see this weekend if it really is a very good Baylor team. They play Arkansas who is uber talented but needs time to gel (ala Kentucky all the years Calipari was there)

That is fair.... they could be over rated and just made the Zags look amazing.

I think it's a little of both.

Baylor has a ton of new players who have not had a chance to gel. Loads of talent though. Sometimes teams like this get overrated in the early season. Like the Zags from last year.

Is this the year Todd Golden can get UF rolling?

I don't really feel it but looked ok so far.

Bama definitely the team to beat in the the SEC. I thought the ranking was a bit lofty but watched the other night and they are scary good. And now woth added depth. Freshman Lebanon philon from my area. He's gonna be a good one.

Whelp that didn't age well :crying:

Lol.....read that today and thought "wow, I'm glad I'm not a Florida fan today". Gawd.

It's been a rough few years, man.

UCLA lost to New Mexico last night - might be one to file away in the brain when it’s time to fill out a bracket, on both sides.

Baylor and Arkansas today - should help us get a better idea of how good or bad Baylor really is.

#11 Auburn vs. #4 Houston in the Mattress Firm Battleground 2k24.

Yeah, but man.....you guys had it GREAT for so long in both sports. How many fans can say that?

Did I read that Auburn had to turn the team plane around due to players fighting?

88-80 win over AZ ST for the Zags. I didn't see the game and maybe AZ ST isn't such a great team, maybe they are a solid just outside the top 25 team.... we shall see.... but 2-0.
