2024 College Football Thread: Ohio State advances to play unbeaten hypothetical SEC team (1 Viewer)

We just recently moved to central Florida
What you think? You like it?
Feels weird to me. People are too friendly, definitely not like Mass. Food kind of stinks , feel like Ray Liotta at the end of Goodfellas. My god the Chinese food here is an abomination, fried rice is yellow rice with peas and it goes down from there. Got a quote for a pool , 120-150k  . But my wife loves it…..

Nervous about Texas' trip to the Big House. Obviously UMich is a completely different team this year with no Harbaugh, no JJ, no Corum... but their defense will still fly around and Quinn Ewers just makes me nervous sometimes. UT's D should be able to stifle whatever offense UMich has, but I sense a small letdown after a solid Week 1 performance. Maybe I'm overthinking it. And, hate the 9am PT start. Wish it were an afternoon affair here on the Left Coast so I could go to a sports bar or something to kick back a couple cold ones. Drinking at 9am for me is just... :oldunsure:

The fried rice bit reminds me of Uncle Roger.

I think Texas handles this one without too much sweat. Michigan’s offense looks suspect.

Bloody Mary's down? Screwdriver? Mimosa? Buddy, left coast living means starting early!

Not a big Bloody Mary guy. I could probably do a screwdriver. I'll definitely be tipping something back by lunchtime! :)

Bottomless mimosas at sports bars was my favorite part of being on the West Coast. One of the few parts I found to be a positive.

LOL. Moved my kid into his new place a month ago. 40 steps to the beach and walking distance to bars and restaurants. So Cal coastal weather. Gainfully employed and living with a couple buddies. Now entering the dating scene as a single professional with a place at the beach. Close to hiking and biking trails. And snowboarding a short drive away. My 22 year old self couldn’t be more jealous if I tried.

Oh and just down the road, he can catch home football games at his Alma Mater with a pretty good coach who once used to be at @Instinctive ’s Alma Mater.

That sounds like paradise! Where about is his new place? Does he go up to Big Bear for snow boarding?

He lives in Playa Del Rey now. And, yeah, Big Bear or Mammoth for snowboarding. Is Freaky Friday a real thing? Cause I’ll make a wish or pee in a fountain or whatever.

Ha! That's awesome. We spent 4 nights in Big Bear this summer at my cousin's place. Holler if you or he ever needs an AbnB spot right by the mountain. Could probably get you the friends and family rate. So tranquil there.

When my parents first moved to SoCal, that's where they lived. Cool little spot tucked into LAX and Marina del Rey. Close to El Segundo, too, which has a cool little vibe to it as well.

That’s super cool! It’s a pretty small town. And the marina separates it from Venice so you don’t have any of that craziness drifting down. The beach at Playa Del Rey seems almost empty most of the time I’ve been there. And while he is out in the field most of the time (battling LA traffic), when he does go into the office, it’s in El Segundo which is super convenient.

After thrashing mighty Akron, the brave men of THE Ohio State University face off this weekend against vaunted Western Michigan as 38.5 point favorites. I guess when you lose to Michigan three years in a row, you compensate with the easiest non-conference schedule of any Power 4 conference team.

Meanwhile, Michigan will be taking on No. 3 Texas this weekend (because that’s what Big 10 teams with cajones do).

(Any OSU fans in here???)

No, Ohio State fans all left with their tails between their legs. They really got butt hurt when the mods here ignored their incessant mashing of the Report Button. Michigan becoming the new king was the final straw.

FWIW (not that I said any particular place sucked, just that I don't want to live there...)

1. It took me WAY too long to realize this meant OU, USC, and Lincoln Riley. My brain was like "David Shaw works for the Broncos now." I think perhaps "pretty good" threw me off
2. It is an AMAZING place to live for college and your early 20s - no kids, not enough income to experience the brutal income tax penalties, not enough desire for a house and yard to experience the brutal cost of a home, etc.
3. I'm not just speaking out of turn, I did live there for nearly 6 years, from 22-almost 28.
4. It is awesome to go skiing to beach to summer mountains, etc, all very easily, but it is absolutely brutal to get anywhere in a reasonable amount of time. Again, all well and fine in your youth, but once you have a job or want to travel or all your friends don't live int he same building...yeah.

I could keep going about other things I have real beef with, but will instead note that basically nowhere in the U.S. is perfect, and I have no desire to live on the East Coast either, having lived in NYC and spent 4 days/week in DC for the better part of 4 years too. I'm definitely a "middle 80% of the country" kind of person.

Sounds like your son is off to an awesome start!!!!

Their matchup against Washington was cancelled when the PAC imploded. Yeah, the OOC schedule sucks. Last year, UGA’s OOC schedule was UT Martin, Ball State, UAB, and Georgia Tech. Michigan had East Carolina, UNLV, and Bowling Green. When you schedule games years in advance, **** happens.

You mean currently ranked, Power 4 Conference Georgia Tech? And you could always, you know, schedule a couple legit out of conference games. After all, USC is playing LSU and Notre Dame this season. Huge cajones!!!

Edit: I’m just giving tOSU fans a hard time. Having lived in Ohio, I am friends with a bunch of them. While their out of conference is listed as the easiest of any team in the the Power 4 conferences, they do face three top 10 teams on their schedule. That’s no joke.

I’m surprised tOSU and USC don’t play until 2026. They do play Grambling State in 2025, which is likely a much tougher defense.

:oldunsure:
This is the same MI defense as years past. They're good, but not elite. I think Ewers and team will have no problem moving the ball on them. Might see Johnson with an interception, but overall I think Texas wins this by double digits. MI offense looks too one dimensional with the running game. Until they can find a QB that can throw the ball, they'll keep trying to pound it on the ground. Too bad their OL isn't the same as previous years. It's pretty suspect too.

Thin D line, spotty QB play (at Wisconsin? No way), no real offensive identity or "playmaker" threat (jury is still out on Trech though)...whatever happens vs SD will pale in comparison to the vile crimes that Alabama, Oregon and the like will perform on them.

They had one of, if not the best defense in the country last year. The starters this year are equal, just don't have the crazy depth they had last year.

Not the Oregon team that showed up last week....egad.

Before this past weekend, Oregon was favored at home against OSU. Now they are a 1 point dog.

Yeah, I'm happy we are busy most of the afternoon, so I have an excuse to miss this one. Ewers' inconsistency could keep this thing in doubt longer than it should, but Michigan's lack of offense has me chalking this up as an L pre-game. Thinking of just betting the under on Michigan total points, guessing it's 17.5

I can see why....

I'm going to try and be reasonable about what I saw against Idaho and remember that Oregon put up a bunch of yards, first downs and defensively, played very well for most of that game. A trick play and failure to tackle in the open field a few times got 'em, but by and large the defense did their job. Clean up the penalties on the OL, execute a little better in the run game, change James' cleats, make your field goals and I think things would have looked a lot better for them. I think if they play a clean game, they beat Boise St. by 20 tomorrow night and the Idaho game becomes a distant memory.

And, I'm also telling myself that Alabama almost lost to South Florida or some such before making it to the playoffs, so.....these are kids. Funky outcomes in games will happen.

If @MAC_32 is interested in some more action, I’d lay the points against Boise State.

Last year, yes that defense was elite. No doubt about it. But this isn't last year's defense. I'm not saying they're not good - I'm saying they're not elite like last year. I think that Texas offense is more than that defense can handle. I don't see a 51-6 blowout by the Longhorns, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a 31-13 score with Texas walking out of there with the W.

Thanks, but I'm good with $50. Gathering quotes for some significant house work, so the wife asked me to reset the gambling budget for football season. Per week budget is now $250, so 5U cap dropped to $50. Nice not having a vig with this one though.

I think you're over-selling last year's group. There were only three picks inside the top 100 - #'s 49, 50, and 69 (hey-o!). Not 100% but I believe all of the defenders lost to the portal were FR. There should not be a big dropoff on D, but this unit is more vulnerable if health breaks unfavorably.

Good point. By comparison, Tankathon currently has 4 UM defensive players listed inside the top 100. 2, 5, 23, and 78.

They brought in this Offensive Coordinator - Phil Longo - who calls his offense the "Air Raid" which for me doesn't make sense at Wisconsin. From what I've seen, the OL is not a normal Wisconsin OL and the offense suffers from identity issues. I don't expect things will improve when the snow flies later this fall. Nonetheless, for reasons unknown to me, I have agreed to make the trek to Madison for the Alabama game to see the carnage in living color.

You’re staying for the 5th quarter, right? They still do that?

UGA was supposed to play OU last year and I believe again this year, but realignment nixed that. I think quite a few planned matchups were abandoned, it's why the slate feels so crappy this weekend. I'm willing to give teams a pass for a few years. Ohio State always has at least one decent non-conference game, this year is more of an exception than the norm.

Whats the under in the Texas game? Id likely take that. Michigan isnt a program that is built to be top tier every year. Its not their philosophy. That might change under Moore but they have always been built on developing into the system. Id be surprised if they won, but I think the defense keeps them close but the offense lets them down.

It was around 41 earlier.

NC State Tennessee sounds like a game that would be played at a nascar race track.
Weird, I was literally just thinking about the 2016-17 Nebraska vs Tennessee football series being postponed because Tennessee took a game to play Va Tech at Bristol in 2016.

I got Michigan under 17.5, but had to pay a decent vig. Don't know what to expect out of Texas, so kept the bet to single team vs both.
