2024 College Football Thread: Ohio State advances to play unbeaten hypothetical SEC team (3 Viewers)

Oh well. Bummer the Vols played so poorly and weren't competitive.

But that's how it goes sometimes.

Overall, a good season finishing above expectations with good wins and making the playoffs barely.

I mean, it a major upgrade from prior seasons for sure. Progress!

Not really. At least not from the last few years.

I'd guess they'll wind up about 15 this year in the AP poll.

For the AP Poll final standings in previous years:

2023 finished #17 (9-4)

2022 finished #6 (11-2)

So overall a good year with some nice wins and barely making the playoffs. But a bit below where we've been.

I'm trying to be positive, GB! ;)

No worries. Me too. We've been seemingly "stuck" in that good but not great spot for the last couple of years. It's tough to complain as lots would love to be there. But nobody here is satisfied at all so it's an odd spot.

As probably the only Boise State graduate on the board, I ‘m glad they ended up with the Penn State matchup. Though if they win I’m sure the commentary will be how bad the Lions are. Very excited to see what Jeanty can do against that D.
I just wish the game were in Boise, save the neutral sites for the final 4

I did like the home field angle. Made things fun. Although I can see the argument that a first round bye AND home field is too much advantage. Although that seems to work fine for the NFL.

As an outsider, I recall the Butch years as they played Oregon twice and it was.....bad. For the Vols. But I can see Vols' fans wanting more.

Was thinking the same thing. Loved having these playoff games on an actual campus rather than some sterile neutral site. Hopefully they can get to that point.

Oregon would not be a dog if this rematch were in the zoo. This approach would add value to the conference championship games.

Oh for sure. The Jones and Pruitt years were rough but the last few have been pretty good.

Definitely got the right coach and I think he's still growing on the job.

I went to that game when Tenn came to Autzen in 2013. They were bad, the fans knew they were going to get rolled and they did, 59-14. Everyone I met was great, but what is memorable is that it was my first exposure to fans walking around chanting “SEC! SEC!” I didn’t get it then, still don’t get it now. I’ve never cared about my league, I care about my school. I don’t root for the other schools in my league unless it directly benefits my school. Those schools are our primary competition, why would I want them to do well or chant anything even indirectly in support of them?

I did enjoy the tOSU fans last night trolling them by chanting that, and I generally don’t enjoy tOSU fans doing anything.

Would be cool but that stadium seats like 40K tops.
Honestly until the selection show I thought if they secured the bye they were going to get a home game. Shows what I know.

Can you imagine seeing Penn State on the blue? Would be awesome.

Despite the result of their playoff game, you have to say it was a pretty good year for SMU. Literally bought their way into the ACC and made the playoffs. Not bad.

Yeah man, I'm proud of the Ponies. Finally gave me something to root for after 30 years of misery in lesser divisions. When I was going there we'd attend games but mainly to drink and socialize. It's kind of cool to finally have the game as the main focus. Completely surpassed my wildest expectations and should really help recruiting going forward.

Do they still play on campus? When I was growing up I got to see them play at Texas Stadium a time or too....I don't remember exactly but I think Moody was too small for the Pony Express.
They played at Texas stadium when playing Texas or A&M but have played on campus since they updated the stadium even when vs a big school.

For sure. Lots of pride in the conference and it being a tough road. There's an interesting tension. There were signs at ESPN's Game Day from Vol fans that said, "Alabama, how your playoff going?". So there is intense rivalry among schools. But also pride in the bigger picture. But I can see how that would be hard to understand if you grew up as a fan in the Pac 12.

Thanks for the perspective. Its just so different out here, in every way. Buckeye fan buddy was talking about how many Vol fans were at the game yesterday, and how they’re less than a six hour drive away. I had never thought about this before today, but there are literally two FBS schools within a six hour drive of Eugene. Five or six if you push it out to seven hours. Didn’t check his math, but he said there were probably 20-40 within six hours of Columbus, and I’d guess that’s true of most FBS schools in the MW, East, and South.

Oregon fans have nothing in common with UW fans or USC fans or Arizona fans. The only thing uniting West Coast sports fans historically was “East Coast Bias.” But now that’s solely become, in college football anyway, SEC bias. And everyone outside of the south is united against that!

And appreciate the well wishes for the Ducks! I know some hate the “new money” aspect of what we’ve done out here, but aren’t we ready for some new blood in college football? Oregon has been relevant for 15-20 years but hasn’t been able to get over the hump, very cautiously optimistic they can get it done this year.

The number 1 team in the country is a 2.5 point underdog to Ohio State.

In the spirit of Christmas, I will choose not to be bitter about this for the rest of this year. :)
If there is one thing I trust, is that Lanning will find a way to use it as motivation.

plus it doesn’t punish the fans with extra travel

They've been playing on campus for a while now (20+ years). Most of the mid-late 90s they were playing in the Cotton Bowl which was awful for ambience and fan engagement.

Oregon won by what, 1 point at home? 2.5 at a neutral site doesn't seem out of hand.

Plus, rankings don't enter into it. Just ask this thread.

I'm not disrespected by the line...just disappointed that the best team of the country had to play the 2nd best team in the country when Penn State and Texas get easier teams to play. Vegas has it right.

Yep. Ducks absolutely got hosed by the seeding. However, part of me likes getting this much time to prepare for the hardest team they will face in the playoffs. If they can get it done I think they roll through remaining games for the championship.

Much less  HONK in here last night vs the day or so prior.

What changed.

Can you be more specific with exactly what you mean? Can you add quotes?

All four favorites won convincingly this weekend as expected. Sure, Indiana, Clemson, SMU and Tennessee fans didn't get the result they wanted but the favorites rolled.

He's talking about that need2know guy coming in with his "this team was overrated" discussion is you'd call it. I call them pointless fly by but to each his own.

I get Joe may disagree, but bad faith nonsense like that deserves a good ribbing, especially when they suddenly disappear after realizing they stepped in it. I found @culdeus ' call for 9 SEC teams in the 12 team playoff worthy of a good chuckle, but I think he was only half serious.

Is this format perfect? Lord, no. As I wrote earlier, and most every year prior to this one, I think 6 with round one on campus is the sweet spot. The NCAA went for the money grab instead. C'est la'vie, but the HONKing about the 'snubs' that got their bubble popped is pure folly. Whoever the last few teams to make the field are won't go far, doesn't matter who it is. I was thinking about it during the blowouts Saturday, I'd rather see a non-blue blood knowing 9 outta 10 are getting boat raced because the 1 that doesn't is gonna make some damn good tv, kinda like the Madness.

What is being overlooked is if the sec and big 10 don't get more teams in they will just use that as a reason to abandon the NCAA and setup their own tourney.

Per Freeman, Riley Mills (ND DT) is out the rest of the postseason with a knee issue. Rocco Spindler (ND OL) is also unlikely to play....

That means ND's DL is down to DT's 3 & 4 and DE's 4 & 5 for the Georgia game. Cross is still there, but is still bothered by an ankle and not looking at all like he's himself. ND's OL loses another starter in an already depleted room. This is really no bueno for ND's chances to be so undermanned on both lines.

As much as I hate to admit it, this especially signals it could get ugly. ND favored by 1.5 is now crazy. I want to believe the guys can find a way and I know all teams are injured, but heck man you win and lose games up front and now we're clearly onto our second string on both sides with the biggest game of the year coming. Riley is going to have to have a Haynes King-like GA/Tech game for ND to stay competitive I fear.

Of course some people love victory lapping on the internet. That's life for some.

But accusing someone of discussing in bad faith is very different. And as you said, it seemed clear he wasn't being serious about 9 teams. Just because they don't agree with you doesn't mean a discussion is in bad faith.

Notice he didn't come in about Tennessee though. S-E-C. S-E-C. S-E-C.

 What is there to say more about Tennessee than what was already said? We were a 7 point underdog and got beat convincingly by a team that's now favored against Oregon.

I've already said that.

So who in here is going to the Rose Bowl? Ticket prices have been coming down and my kid and his buddy really want to go. Since I’ll be in the area there is a good chance that the 3 of us go if ticket prices continue to come down.

As a PSU fan, I agree that it would be awesome to go play up there. It would be a lot tougher, of course. But worth it for the atmosphere.

Sometimes I really thing Joe is a master of schtick.

Thank you. I think. :lmao: But no shtick in this one.

I think most everyone understood when the playoffs were implemented that teams on the bubble would be a hot discussion topic. Regardless of who they are. Florida State was left out last year. That was a hot topic. This year Alabama and Ole Miss tried to make an argument they should be in. Others made an argument it should be others. And the committee agreed. But the discussion seems natural.

I think I was mostly interested in how some felt it wasn't something that should not be discussed.

The Committee decided. And the fans talk about it. I think anytime decisions are made by a subjective committee you'll have intense discussion. Especially when compared to choosing the teams based on Wins and Losses on the field like the NFL does things. It's sports. We talk about stuff.
