Money better spent than on Golladay imo. If he can keep up that production then good signing, if he regresses then bleh. I'm neutral on this one.
I like it, and by resigning one of our own, it won't affect the compensatory draft pick for Golladay

Also playing with his brother Julian is a nice PR take and can be looked at as one way the Lions shape a new identity for the team.
With Julian be on injured reserve last year couldn't really get that type of mojo going.

Hey Lions fans. So, this linebacker the Jets signed......is this as awful as it appears on the surface or is there something we're missing.
7 Mil for a guy who it seems like you guys benched last year? In what world does that make sense?
Obviously it wont take much to upgrade most of the spots on the Jets defense, but still......
why did he play so little? Was it really just a scheme fit? Seems like his pass rushing advanced metrics are good but the Lions had no use for him? Just seems weird.

He's super athletic, but is inexplainably terrible at pass coverage. They eventually figured that if he only rushed the passer and never dropped into coverage, he was usable, but offenses were able to exploit that.
Maybe a better coach than Patricia could fix that, but the new regime didnt have much interest.

Yeah, doesn't seem to have good field instincts. I don't think this is another Kyle Van Noy situation where they drafted correctly but used poorly. I think he's just not very good.

The Detroit Lions have not made a dent in free agency yet, but they continue to clear their roster of some of their most undesirable contracts.
NFL Network reported early Tuesday that the Lions plan to release backup quarterback Chase Daniel and defensive tackle Danny Shelton.
The moves create another $6.3 million in cap space, but add two more holes for the Lions to fill this offseason.
Shelton, one of the Lions' top free agent additions last spring, made 37 tackles in 12 starts in his lone season in Detroit, when the Lions had the league's worst defense.
John Penisini, a rookie sixth-round pick, outplayed Shelton at nose tackle and should man the position this fall.
Daniel appeared in four games as a backup to Matthew Stafford, completing 29 of 43 passes for 264 yards with one touchdown and two interception.
The Lions let it be known they were willing to trade Daniel earlier this month, but found no takers for his bloated $4.3 million salary, of which $1.5 million is fully guaranteed.
The Lions could enter 2021 with a completely new quarterback room. In January, they agreed to trade Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams for Jared Goff and three draft picks. That move will become official later this week, and Goff is expected to start at quarterback this fall.
David Blough remains under contract as a backup, but the Lions will add another veteran in free agency and/or a rookie around the draft.
Once processed, Daniels' release will create $2.3 million in cap space, while Shelton's will free up $4 million.

Okwara had a good season but he was playing for a new deal. If he continues upward it is worth it. It was his first good season though.
Like Sparky Anderson once said "Give me 25 players who are on the last year of their contract and I will win the pennant every year"

That's not quite true though, he had a good first season (3rd NFL season) with the Lions (2018) with 7.5 sacks after he was a final cut on the Giants. For an UDFA he has developed nicely, T-5th in pressures and led the league in 3rd down pressures and 3rd down pressure rate.

Sheila lost a year and then some by not dumping Patricia/Quinn last year.
Owners have their own learning curve too.

Well she officially took over in June, 2020 - too late to do anything for last season. Plus the pandemic threw a wrench into everything.
I’ve been impressed by what she’s done so far. It’s the Lions so taking a wait n see approach but LT deals to the GM/HC probably makes sense in a full on rebuild. They’ve attracted a ton of quality front office hires. Handled the Stafford situation as smoothly as could be imagined, no drama, everyone got what they wanted out of the trade - and for once, a player of generational importance left on good terms. She has been making a good faith effort to repair the relationship with Calvin. Getting Spielman involved in the process, maintaining good ties with Barry - great to see. I know it’s been a crappy Org overall for 60+ years but alumni involvement/fan relations are nontrivial aspects which a quality franchise pays attention to.
I’m not a young man. I seriously just want to see one championship before I die. This fall is my 55th year of being a fan, and we’re not gonna be competitive for awhile. But I do think we’re steered in the right direction and I am hopeful.

Well said. Hopefully fans can maintain patience with the coaching staff when things get ugly this year. I'm approaching it as a showcase for young players like Swift and Hockenson, the players we draft this year, and of course Goff. Chances are there will be debate about whether he should remain QB in year two.
It's important to focus less on wins and losses and more on how hard the players play for Campbell. If they can stay competitive and fight to the end the team may be viewed on the upward trend and be more appealing to free agents once we have cap space. Kind of like what Jax is doing.

Well depending on how the QB situation plays out Lions are 3-4 years away. They might compete in 1-2 but 3-4 before actually winning something. For the first time in a long time I do have some hope though.

Brockers trade improves D but being 30 doesn't seem best fit for a rebuild. Wonder what they gave up? Brockers is the Ram who said that Stafford was a step up from Goff.
Williams is a good all purpose RB who can pass block and will turn 26. Need to have tools to keep Goff clean in pocket. Seems to be a good signing at a good price. It was reported that Bills and Chiefs were pursuing Williams. Good to snatch him from a division foe.
Also Williams is not a fumbler. Stats I looked at do not show him fumbling at all during his NFL career.

For context, here are his other comments about Goff:
"You’re getting a tough player, mentally tough player that doesn’t let a lot of things get to him," Michael Brockers said of Goff on "Good Morning Football" earlier this month. "And he has a lot of experience. You can’t take that away from him. The man has made it to the big game and played in big games. He knows how to get it done when the time is needed, so the Lions should be very happy with what they have."
He's still a capable starter, good run stuffer who was overshadowed by the brilliance of Donald. Has been durable and is reputed to be a good locker room presence.
Love the Jamaal Williams signing. While he does have some duplication (pass blocking, pass pro) with the Wizzanator he's another solid, capable vet who brings a great attitude. Packer fans on other boards are bummed to lose him but it was inevitable. Regardless, it's Swift's backfield and Williams is a team oriented guy. Lot of people think this means the end of KJ but IMO he was never getting a second contract unless it was a hometown discount. No reason we can't keep both for 2021, beyond that who knows.
A lot of the personnel moves right now are about 1) managing the cap, and 2) signing the right kind of personnel. They're not big splashy players, we don't have the cap space to go after anyone who will have an immediate impact. But it's still important to fill out the roster construction at a manageable price while bringing in guys who want to be a part of this thing.
IMO Holmes and DC are going to have an awesome culture; they are setting the tone. But we'll have to wait and see if that actually happens.

Hey what's the new CBA policy on weed? They only test the first two weeks of TC, right? And the threshold is like three times higher than MLB?
Just for pain relief they ought to just take it off the banned substance list, heck it's becoming legal all over the country. Plus I don't want Hock to get suspended.

In a year even finding a starting DT in FA or the draft is challenging that seems super cheap.
I have always tied the third round pick into the cost of taking on Goff.
Carolina offered 8 plus. The value of pick 8 is at least equal to the value of the two future firsts, I think more but at least.
But I was critical of Lions for not franchising Golladay and I think they might have got this right as we are finally seeing the NFL adjust the WR market. I assumed they could trade him for something tangible, maybe not.

I see this with Piston fans right now. Less focus on wins and losses but rather on building talent level and players that fit vision. Added bonus is poor record increases chances of drafting top talent/difference makers.

I'm sure it's been discussed a little but who is Goff gonna throw the ball to? Most of the Detroit starting trio at WR from the last few seasons are all gone. Tate was sent packing last year, now Golladay is a FA, who drafts guys like that and allows them to walk for nothing? Marvin Jones is gone and maybe all of this is for the best.

Amazing how bad all four franchises are right now. Pistons are 29th out of 30, Red Wings 30th (out of 31), Tigers 29th (30), Lions are the most successful team in their league (25th of 32) lol.
Almost as amazing of a fact as Detroit is one of only five cities with four franchises within the city limits (Philly, Chicago, Denver and L.A.) - though I'm not sure L.A. belongs on that list since the NFL teams play in Los Angeles county but the stadium is in Inglewood.

Tate trade was 2018, they got a third rounder for a guy who was leaving. The timing was horrible and had a hugely negative impact on the team, but at least they got something out of it. He and MJJ were probably the two best FA signings the Lions have made in the last twenty years.
Golladay could have signed a 4-5 year deal last fall for $18M; the Lions were totally cool giving him a contract in the Cooks-Beckham-Cooper-Thomas range. Now at 27 yrs 134 days he's the oldest desirable FA WR on the market (JJSS 24, Samuel 24, Fuller 26), and likely will be lucky to top $15M. Great class last year and a very good class coming in, just kind of a bad time to be a WR FA. The aforementioned guys who signed for $18-20M the last few years really didn't work out so great and KG has missed significant time in half his seasons.
MJJ gave us 5 good years, he's on the wrong side 30 but we wish him well. Just a really good dude with an awesome family.
Tyrell Williams and Geronimo Allison are not the answer, guess we'll be picking up at least one WR Day Two. Too many needs to make it a priority at #7 - I'd prefer they trade back for an extra pick, then take Parsons or JOK mid-round - but if they stay there then Waddle or Smith makes the most sense. But I'm hoping they trade out of it and address the terrible linebacking corps first.

KG was a 3rd round pick by the previous GM, and the Lions will get a late 3rd next year as compensation. And he obviously didn't want to play there or he could have signed the extension he was previously offered.

Strongly disagree on the LB and WRs there. Lions needs are great, drafting a LB top 10 is a luxury move IMO. Plus I have seen a lot of Parsons=Jarrad Davis comps which is scary. As for WR, I think Detroit would be better off getting 2-3 guys rounds 2-4. We could potentially get an X like Bateman or Marshall, a slot guy like Elijah Moore and a burner like Anthony Schwartz. I like pairing that approach with Sewell or Slater at 7. Give Goff a strong offense to see what he can do. Don't leave any excuses or question marks on the table for him. Then if he fails, the offense is set for the rookie/FA we bring in.
That is pretty affordable for a 25 edge rusher coming off a double digit sack season.
Curtis Samuel is probably the only WR FA of note I have any interest in.

Don't disagree with your take on positional value regarding the 7th pick, but I havent seen any alternatives I like yet. Who are you hoping for if the Lions cant find a trade partner?

Slater or Sewell. Just looking at positional value, I think in the top 10 you really want to be taking a QB, edge rusher or OT. The player needs to be a Julio, Calvin, Patrick Peterson slam the F dunk otherwise IMO. I like the idea of getting a top notch RT to secure the OL for the next 3 years or so. Then get Goff some pass catchers later. The drop off at WR is much smaller in rounds 2 and 3 than OL. We set Goff up to succeed. If doesn't, then all the pieces are in place for when they draft the next guy.

Sewell will be long gone by our pick and I'd say O-Line is one of our better position groups overall.

Yeah, I am sure he was which I understand. Maybe part of this is Quinn/Partricia's fault for severing the ties but I think he decided 5 months ago he wasn't coming back here. In retrospect, he is likely costing himself money as Quinn was trying to over pay him.

Probably but it's not impossible for 4 QBs, Pitts and Chase to go in the top 6. Unlikely but not impossible. I also agree OL is our strongest group but we don't have a RT. Just because OL is good doesn't mean we should skip over the BPA at a high value position to take a lesser player based on need. We are ashes right now and need to gather value.
