2024 Detroit Lions 7-1: Lions "Whack the Pack" (44 Viewers)

Rd 3 and beyond

BPA for defense

A TE project (too big of a hole and too many great TE prospects not get someone)

RB. This is a big hole. Ameer's entire college and pro career has seemed to indicate he can't be a workhorse. When we lost him last year, the run game tanked. Theo is just a pass catcher. ZZ is a back-up. Unless they think Washington has taken a massive leap forward, the Lions need a capable runner.  I am not sure who that is.

- Marlon Mack: quick and elusive, but not sure how successful he will be between the tackles, lots of bouncing to the outside

- D'onta Foreman: big boy with speed, but knocks seem to be that he doesn't play physical and that the Texas spread offense let him have runways to blast into space so we aren't sure how well that translates to the NFL

-Joe Williams: The guy looks and tested like a high end NFL draft prospect. The film is really exciting. However, the red flags are scary: kicked off UCONN, retired in 2016 before coming back midseason.

Always funny when the local media tries to figure out who they are going to draft. They seem angry that Quinn won't give them (or the rest of the NFL) any specifics.

ZZ is far from a superstar but late last year the Lions running game looked better than it has in years with ZZ being the lone feature back. With their improved line, I think that for now they are fine with their lot of RB's and keep upgrading in other areas.

With that said if Hunt or Perine fall beyond the 3rd round they should consider one of them.

Come on with this Zenner talk. I was impressed too but I looked back and the Lions always got away from Zenner in the 2nd halves for a reason.

The more I look and think about things, the more I think they are going offense in the 1st. I would bet McCaffrey, Howard, Njoku and the top 3 are WRs really high on their boards. Reddick still seems like the best fit though. I like the idea of McNichols at RB. He seems to be the pass catching type of RB the Lions like and could replace either Ameer or Theo in case of injury.

Davie seems like a need and safe pick.  Thought Foster might be the guy here but Davis seems like a good fit.

Foster is probably more talented, but if you read up on Davis it's really hard not to like him. Seems like a super high-character guy, and still a really good athlete. Time will tell if he was the right pick but as of now I like it.

Well, ####. I figured Foster was the obvious choice there. What am I missing?

As posted in the draft thread, there are a lot of flags with foster. Diluted sample, shoulder perhaps, sent home from the combine for behavior issues, all the while the ffl community has left him ranked where he was while they debate if a white guy can play rb. I'm thinking foster could be locker room cancer unless he grows up.

I gotta admit, I wanted Foster because he's got a much higher ceiling but he also has a much much lower floor too. I'll give Quinn the benefit till he starts proving me wrong. You know something's up with Foster when the Ravens of all people passed on him before us and their GM is Ozzie Newsome from Alabama.

Ozzie probably heard more than most, very telling.

Jarrad Davis was absolutely the right pick IMO. "Safe" pick seems to be the consensus buzzword but honestly I don't think it's a justified knock on the guy. He's high character, great leader and had the best combine numbers of any LB. [ETA: sorry, think the numbers were from his Pro Day. Different environment, but point remains - he has the best measurables amongst LBs in this draft.] It's hard to find reason to not like the pick.

Repeated from upthread: the 2016 Detroit Lions LB corps had zero sacks, zero interceptions, zero forced fumbles, zero fumble recoveries. Not even sure if that was an NFL first but it's biggest need on the team and they had a high quality pick waiting for them.

Would love to see McDowell or an edge rusher in the 2nd.

Agree on Davis. Really good player with all of the intangibles. Nice building block.

Not feeling McDowell. I'm tired of lazy or unmotivated players with huge upside in the D...see Andre Drummond. Would love an edge rusher or, if he's there, Mixon (I know it won't happen but we need play makers). I'd also consider another LB in the second if it's the BPA. We are still very weak there.

Cant wait for tonight to play out.

I'm happy with the pick for the simple reason that they went defense, and didn't grab a RB or that Ebron-clone TE that the previous regime would have

I agree for the most part - McDowell really mailed it in at MSU last season, and his drop on the draft boards is very much deserved. I want more Jarrad Davis types and fewer guys like that.

But he was considered a potential top 5 pick at one point. If he's still there in the back half of the 2nd round you do have to think about him, flaws and all.

Davis and Foster are very similar players:

Uber athletes. Lots of injury concerns (Davis had a bad ankle injury and meniscus tear, Foster has the shoulder issue, multiple concussions and stingers). Insanely productive. The big difference is Foster has questionable character where Davis is a leader and role model. Solid pick, but it definitely comes with injury risk.

The biggest strengths for Davis are his athleticism (you can probably count on 1 hand the number of NFL LBs with his size, speed and explosiveness), his leadership and work ethic. His weaknesses are the injuries and a tendency to be overly aggressive. He overran plays and often bit hard on play-action, counters, etc. He has to improve play recognition.

Steelers passed.on him too

Maybe 3rd round, but there are too many good players in the 2nd round to go that direction. The Lions have an emphasis on high character guys. Also, I think a change of scenery might be better for McDowell. I just worry that if runs with a negative crew, thats going to be all around him if he stays in Michigan. Also, the Lions have a history of struggling. How does he react if they open the season 1-4. Does he just throw in the towel on the season?

Here are my 8 guys I like for Rd 2/3

- Kevin King CB Washington. There isn't a more physically gifted corner in the draft. He's pretty thin, but his combination of height, length, speed, vertical and quickness makes him a potential eraser against tall vertical threats like AJ Green or small quick WRs like Beckham. After 2017, I think Slay might be the only CB left under contract so this is a huge need.

- Tyus Bowser OLB/DE Houston. Athletically, he's like a bigger version of Davis. Put Davis in the middle and Bowser on the strong side and all of a sudden Detroit has one of the most athletic line backer units in the NFL. On 3rd down, Bowser doesn't have to come off the field either as he can move to DE as he was a pass rush specialist at Houston.

- Budda Baker S Washington. Quinn is 31 and we don't have anyone in line to take his place. Budda can play center field, generate turnovers and he does it with a linebacker mentality. Like Desmond King, he is a guy that will generate turnovers and be a plus in defending the run. I saw someone on Twitter call him Nightcrawler and that's the perfect nickname. His closing speed is amazing. Guys will catch the ball and it looks like there is just tons of open field for them to run, but Baker closes so quickly and ends the play that teleportation is the only explanation.

- Desmond King CB/S Iowa.  His best fit might be slot corner, it might be free safety.  He is a ballhawk, but lacks the size and speed for the outside. He makes up for that in tenacity and toughness. King absolutely will sniff out the run, get into the backfield and make plays against ball carriers. Bonus points for being a Detroit kid.

-Carlos Henderson WR LA Tech. YAC MONSTER. I don't want to replace Tate, but that time will come and Carlos could be it. This guy has speed and can make tough contested catches, but his best asset is YAC. The Lions love those short high percentage passes and letting Tate, Theo and Ameer elude tacklers. Carlos would fit right in.

-Chris Wormley DT UM.  A'Shawn will be the big body that occupies blockers, but he needs an athletic companion that create pressure from the interior. For a 300 pound man, Wormley is athletic (UM played him at edge a lot). If you want to lock down the center of the D and free up room for Davis to operate, this is a nice pick.

- Gerald Everett TE South Alabama. There is a real strong chance this is the last year of Ebron and Boldin is gone. The Lions will need a big bodied pass catcher to work in the middle of the field. Everett won't ever be an in-line TE, but he can do all the things Ebron and Boldin did (hopefully better). Everett is small at only 6-3 240, but he is a better athlete than many NFL WRs.

Super wildcard

- Tim Wiliams DE Alabama. He doesn't fit the D as he is more of a 3-4 edge guy. He has character issues. Everything about him screams this pick makes no sense. However, when you see him play, it's undeniable how good he is at rushing the passer. If the concerns around Williams causes him to fall to the 3rd, I think he can be a pass rush specialist opposite of Ziggy  and make an immediate impact.

Te is very deep, grab 2 later and let them compete. Keep upgrading the d, sign Floyd and or boldin, and I won't be upset if mixon ends up here.

Tabor CB Florida

I hope he plays football faster than his 4.6 40. The tape suggests that.

ANALYSIS

Strengths

Prototypical size and athleticism. Plays with bouncy feet in coverage. Good initial patience and foot quickness to mirror receiver's release from press. Has the quick twitch to accelerate and pattern match receivers throughout their routes. Has recovery speed to bird-dog crossers. From zone, can split high/low routes and is quick enough to challenge the catch on either. Has agility and change of direction to come off of one route and pick up the next. Shines when the ball is in the air. Pro-ready closing burst. Has excellent hand-eye coordination. Hands and timing help turn opportunities into interceptions. Posted 28 passes defensed over the last two years. Finished career with nine interceptions at Florida. Willing to unload into receiver's ribs in order jar a ball free.

Weaknesses

Whispers in scouting circles that Tabor fears deep speed. Often played excessively deep off-coverage. Shows balance issues in space. Occasionally loses footing in coverage during his transition. Shows willingness to sit on routes and grab receivers trying to go vertical rather than flipping hips to chase. Can be undisciplined from zone losing track of his responsibilities. Appears to be hit or miss with instinctive playmaking. Doesn't play to his listed size. Finesse cornerback. Avoids mixing it up with physical receivers away from the ball. Too many weak tackle attempts. Charted with 13 missed tackles in 2015. Scouts consider him to be a high-maintenance prospect. Has been suspended due to drug tests and a run-in with a teammate in practice.

Draft Projection

Rounds 2-3

Sources Tell Us

"With Vernon (Hargreaves) there last year he played with a lot more confidence. I don't think he's a lockdown cornerback. He's a good football player and can cover in our league, but he's also going to be a pain in the ### for whoever takes him." -- AFC Southest area scout

NFL Comparison

Darius Slay

Bottom Line

Tabor has terrific size and quickness, but his pedestrian 40 times at both the combine and his pro day workout are hard to ignore. While he has some lapses in judgement and awareness in coverage, his nine career interceptions didn't happen by accident. Tabor can pattern match around the field, but he may need safety help over the top if he's playing on the outside. If he's going to be a zone corner, he'll have to do a better job of tackling. Tabor looks like a second day pick.

That's a really odd comparison given how fast Slay is.

If it's accurate, Lions fans will be really happy with Tabor.
Only 9 bench reps too. Much slower and weaker than Slay at the same size. I'm not feeling this one. He seems like a 3rd rounder or worse.

Day 3 Guys

See earlier post about Desmond King.  Apparently I am dumb, but to me this guy has some Pro Bowl skills. He might be redundant with Teez tho

- Jeremy McNichols RB Boise. Jeremy and I both have a masters from Boise. Mine is in Educational Technology. His in in offensive production. Run, catch. Does it all. He fits Detroit so well because the Lions expects their RBs to be versatile. The converted WR killed the combine and had top notch college production.

- Bucky Hodges TE/WR Va Tech There is nothing like Bucky in the draft. He needs a lot of coaching, but 6-6 257  and running a 4.57 is enough to know we are talking about a potential playmaker.

- Marlon Mack RB South Florida. Tall and shifty, can catch.

- Jeremy Sprinkle- Tight End Arkansas.  He can do some pass catching and some blocking. Not great at either, but not bad either. He has a nice frame at 6-5 and 252.

- George Kittle TE Iowa. A surprisingly athletic and fast TE that can block pretty well.

- Carl Lawson DE Auburn. My guess is that his medicals aren't good because many had this guy mocked late 1st/early 2nd  He is a strong explosive end that would fit well across from Ziggy.

Love picking up the extra 4th. I won't be upset with any of those rbs, but I hope they keep hammering the defensive side of the ball. I like the draft so far. Was hoping for Godwin but when tb took him I was happy with the move back. Teez had poor combine/ pro day, but his tape looks legit. KG can stretch the field.

I'll say I like the Tabor pick.

No reason not to trust Quinn up until this point, he said he watched more tape on Tabor than any other player in this draft. His 20 yard cone time is well above average which seems like a far more usueful measurement for a cornerback.

Purely going off the tape he was being projected late 1st early 2nd for his play making abilities, hands etc

Real game film does mean more than being a combine king. Go back to other combines and see where some of those workout warriors are working. If you can't find all of them, stop at your local Burger King.

6 picks left so I would think there is room for both a RB & QB. Right now Jake is listed as the #2, but I would expect a veteran FA to be added to the mix to compete or even own the #2 spot. Defense would be my other 4 picks.

don't really like the second and third round picks.... I liked several other picks that other team made after them. Moving back for an extra pick is fine...

I also like:

Jake Butt TE Michigan. At this point, the lost year with the ACL and the lag in TE development are acceptable with lower capital invested.

Eddie Jackson S Alabama. Free safety that played like a day 2 pick in 2015. He broke his leg early in the 2016 year so it seems like it's an out of sight, out of mind situation with him.

Xavier Woods S LA Tech. A little small (I seem to like undersize safeties), but he's a hitter and a ball hawk. He isn't an explosive athlete, but he's really quick.
