2025-26 NBA Thread: Chauncey Billups suddenly resigns to play minor-league baseball (5 Viewers)

Obviously it's been a good start for the Bulls. Three wins against teams expected to be better than them (Pistons, Magic, Hawks) and one win against another expected play-in team (Kings). Going back to their good stretch at the end of last season, they are now 19-6 in their last 25 regular season games. Their good ending last year was largely discounted since many teams were tanking or resting players for the playoffs but I think it's hard to write this off at this point.

Their difficult schedule to start the season continues with two against the Knicks, then the 76ers, Bucks, Cavs, Spurs and Pistons. Maybe they lose most of these games. Who knows.

The biggest surprise so far is defense. They are fourth in defensive rating and first in opponents' 3 point shooting percentage at only 25.9%. Obviously that last stat can't hold but the Bulls were 2nd to only the Thunder last year so it's something they do well.

Offense should hopefully get a lift when Coby White, arguably their best offensive player, comes back. Matas Buzelis is so young but he has so much potential. It's all very exciting for a franchise that has been dragged through the mud these last few years.

Fun to watch. Something else fun to watch was another team trot out a starting lineup of Derozan-Lavine-Westbrook-Sabonis-Schroeder 🤣

The offense has been great. A lot of movement until the best shot opens up.

A deep bench, too. Ayo and Huerter have been starters in the league, and they have come in with the 2nd unit and played really well.

On Pablo Torre's podcast, he claimed that he had a source who gave him the exact hand that Chauncey Billups had to win a 200k pot.

I know near to nothing about cards. The source claimed that this meant Billup's knew "what the river was". I don't know what that means.

He probably was holding a 6 and a 5 and his opponent had queen/jack.

The opponent was in the lead with two pairs (Qs and Js) and Chauncey hit a straight with the final card that came out. If he knew the 4 was coming he would have the guy beat and led him on.

The last card dealt gave Billups a low probability straight to beat a strong hand, and his betting/calling earlier in the hand led the other poker player to believe he knew what that last card was going to be.

The 4 is the last card. With the 5, 6, you have to hit a 4 hit your straight to win assuming you're opponent has a queen or jack (in this case both). You basically don't play that unless your either purely bluffing.

For those that haven't gotten to the end of today's podcast, Torre thinks at least one of the guys indicted, Shane Hennon, (if not also a second guy) is currently or was an informant dating back to at least the Porter piece of this, if not since 2016-18. He sort of leaves it there, but its going to make discovery very interesting especially if the informant has fallen out of favor with the Feds.

Yes. In short, Billups made a "gut shot" straight which carries very long odds and he likely would have been making a "bad bet" by "chasing" the straight under normal circumstances. His opponent, presumably a good player, knows that Billups shouldn't be "chasing" that river card (last card to complete the hand) so he likely did not suspect Billups to have the straight - giving Chauncy a MASSIVE advantage.

In football it's like going for it on 4th and 15 from your own ten in the first quarter because you know the cornerback is going to fall over or something like this.

Yeah, true. Though I would think that would make Chauncey more immediately suspicious - unless he played up the "i'm the dumb jock getting lucky" role very well.

Either way the point is that Chauncey had a massive advantage knowing the river card because it allowed him to make an otherwise "bad play" because he knew it would work out when normal odds are that it would not (or, at least, Chauncey presumably did not have pot odds to call).
 
spurs are here and they are for real i think but maybe still a little early to put a crown on them just yet but all the same wemby is just a monster that guy is soooo good and i am waiting to see if he is as much of a game changer as steph was take that to the bank brochachos

Keep your eyes on Dylan Harper. He's ready, and I think teams are going to struggle against a 48-minute mismatch at guard play where the Spurs can hit you all game long with combos of Fox, Castle, Harper, and Vassell. Let's count the days until (a) I declare Dylan Harper a top-25 player, and (b) one of youse non-Spurs fans agrees with me.

In doing the draft, one thing I am noticing is how many big men suffer from injuries. There are a ton of mid to lower tier starting quality centers that are lucky to play 55 games a season. On the Mavericks team alone, all 3 of their bigs (AD, Lively & Gafford) are currently out with injuries.

I am wondering what is missing in the training/load management of these guys? I have zero scientific evidence for this, but I personally think it is the change in style of play. Instead of banging on each other down low, bigs are forced to guard out on the perimeter much more than the centers of previous years. They set high pick and rolls and it seems they are moving and covering a lot more ground than ever before. Maybe game after game all those extra steps are adding up for these 250-300 lb guys?

I think teams need to adopt a Center by committee approach and keep these guys at like 20 mpg as much as possible.

something to be said for conditioning the body by working it hard consistently vs. seemingly arbitrarily skipping days

a small part of the overall equation, i guess but to me it feels like instead of cruising along on the highway to your destination, guys are pulling off every half hour, then trying to make up time by flooring it. all that stop/start is no good for the car.
