2025-26 NBA Thread: Pelicans fan dismayed team not involved in gambling scandal, they are just actually this bad (16 Viewers)

So Pablo has Bob Voulgaris on the pod today...made 8-10 million a year for 15-17 years (I'm guessing that's lowballed) gambling on the NBA (a large percentage of that was betting Jerry Sloan, Utah first half unders). Used Blitzarian (which makes a ton of sense in retrospect) as one of his beards. Bob thinks both the NBA and to a lesser extent the NFL are in trouble if they don't get away from a W-L based draft (lotteries) since you can't tell draft tanking from gambling tanking.
I googled that and got nowhere. Would love to hear more about this. Jerry Sloan being a large percentage is interesting. Were there any sort of implications with the Sloan angle? I'd guess hard no, and if there actually was anything, it's gotta be far, far underneath the NBA rug, but have to ask. Up to 200 million? What made him stop?

I know nothing about pro gamblers but that seems like a ton. Wow. And for such an extended period. How did he not get cut off? How much did it cost to run that kind of outfit, and how'd he keep it going, etc? Wild.
Here's the podcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4RrHWCQh08

re: Utah. I guess home (maybe it was road) NBA teams get to decide which basket they want to defend first. Almost all teams choose to defend the basket by their bench in the second half. Utah/Sloan (and two others at the time in the early 00s) did the opposite and defended the basket in front of their bench first. Turns out that the PPG rate for being in front of your coach is a good 10-12 PPG lower than the other way around. For whatever reason, sportbooks at the time didn't really adjust and when they caught on, didn't adjust enough. So it was basically free money by betting first half Utah home unders. So much so that for each home game, the betting logic tells you to basically risk most of your bankroll each game.

Bob's biggest issue was finding people to bet for him. At some point he met Blitzarian who had some account in the UK that didn't get shutdown and basically generated a large portion of his gains. Bob said at one point they started to shade the Utah lines down a touch, but it was still not enough and that they had to bet some still positive EV overs for the book to not do anything (I won't same "catch on" as I wouldn't be surprised if there were other shenanigans happening). Bob thinks they eventually got found out when his old dog appeared on Dan's brother's IG feed by accident. Used Floyd (who Bob thinks does this for a bunch of professionals) for a day.

He basically got burned out trying to find folks to bet for him. He said that part ends up being most of the work.

He's also a pretty accomplished poker player and didn't have much sympathy for the pros taken by Billups games. He has a couple of crazy stories about folks cheating in a casino nevermind in a home game. Said he would only play home games if he could take the cards after it was over.

I know it is early and I am cautiously optimistic about the Pistons, but I want to see a win against the 76ers. Six of their wins are against bad teams and they are 1 - 2 against good teams. Plus a great start might get the Pistons to make a strong move, I feel like they are a number 2 player away at the three or four from being a legit contender in the East.

There you go. Win in Philly. 8-2 overall. Cade was phenomenal in the 2nd half.

Defense was really good 2nd half.

Not sure if you caught the Rockets v. Bucks game but Alpe's final drive to ice it was awesome. My dude was making Giannis look silly 💪

Mavs had to do it. Nico was compromised, he couldn’t be objective about what to do with Anthony Davis going forward. Their timeline is 100% Flagg now and they need to start making moves in that direction.

Still cannot believe that the team that posed the most immediate threat to the Thunder took themselves apart.

crazy that they believed in Nico enough to let him make such a huge trade and then turned around and fired him 9 months later.

I agree although Davis and Kyrie might be difficult to move.

As a Spurs fan, I hope the Mavericks see themselves as team capable of winning playoff series. If I was a Mav's fan, dealing AD would be my top priority as I wash away the sins of Nico and turn my attention to the 2026 draft.

If you had to describe the physical appearance of Mav's owner Patrick Dumont, how would you begin? Let's say you witnessed him committing a crime and needed to describe him to police. What's your starting point?

"Officer, I'm not sure how to describe this, but picture the head of a child, a child with a bad haircut and an expression like he just got caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Now put this head and expression on a morbidly obese amorphous male body with a bad, ill-fitting suit from Sears."

I'm sure they'll get boatloads for AD, Kyrie, and Klay.
I think you might be selling AD's market very short. I also think PJ Washington, Naji Marshall, and Daniel Gafford will have a market that at least gets them something useful in return (I don't recall if Gafford can be traded this year with his extension). N

Absolutely, positively, one of the top 5 worst trades in all of sports history. What makes this different than most of the others is that this one was categorized as such the moment it happened. Positively zero rationale to support the trade, and Nico was lucky to have survived 9 months beyond that moment. Or unlucky I suppose, since he was rightfully skewered relentlessly for those 9 months. I truly feel for Mavs fans on this one.

Most teams are going to have issues matching salary. The two that at least come close are the Kings for LaVine or Philly for George, but are you really getting multiple first back for either? It's really hard to get to a pu pu platter salary match with him. He's obviously not untradable, but I don't know you're getting multiple first back either.

Some ideas (without looking into apron stuff) - in all cases first round picks heading to Dallas unless otherwise mentioned:
  • SAS for Barnes, Johnson, and Olynyk or Johnson, Kornet, Castle, Olynyk or something with no picks.
  • GSW for Kuminga and Green (there would have to be some salary from GSW going somewhere else).... I think this is my favorite
  • OKC for Hartenstein, Wiggins, and Kenrich Williams(or Jaylin Williams instead of Wiggins or other Williams, depending on who is looking for more value)
  • LAL for Hachimura, Vanderbilt, Vincent, and Kleber - not sure if this is allowed but it would be a treat
  • POR for Grant, Williams III, Thybulle
  • DET for Harris and Robinson
  • NYK for KAT
  • CHA for Bridges and Sexton... if the picks cost isn't too high, I think this would be really interesting. Ball, Miller, and KK with a legit PnR center and back line defender could be nice.
Point is, lots of teams could make the money work.

We'll see how long it takes Dallas to hire a replacement. Probably won't see any major changes until then. Next offseason might be the time for trades.

That might be true for the non-AD guys, but I think there is a bit of a ticking clock with Davis both because of his age (turns 33 this season) and because he has a player option after next season so I think there is probably more interest for him now than next offseason.

One thing I'm looking forward to this season is not stressing about how the Celtics are doing. I know this is a rebuild/developmental season and have minimal expectations.

Now I can just enjoy all of the good basketball and marvel at stuff like Wemby & Jokic, the insane depth of OKC and how the Pistons are 9-2.

Giannis doing a decent job of that himself there to be fair.

I really hope Nico talks candidly about the trade once he's out of Dallas. Part of me thinks ownership pushed him in that direction and forced his hand to trade Luka (hello Vegas). If that's not the case, then he might be one of the dumbest folks in sports.

I think both GSW/DAL would need a third team to take on salary (I'm out of trade machine practice) and I think GSW would need to send out $6 million more in salary (again not sure Spotrac's trade machine is 100% accurate). You're right that that seems the most appealing. Dallas being up against the 2nd apron makes things harder.

I'm sure they're making him sign an NDA if he wants the severance.
