The Falcons draft is largely in the books. Some thoughts
1) The draft couldn't have fallen better for them to secure Jalon Walker at #15. The perfect blending of opportunity and value matching need. And if you know anything about the Falcons fanbase, the UGA connection makes him a fan favorite and likely 'last guy out of the tunnel' fixture for a decade. The type of player who can set the tone up front which the Falcons have really lacked.
2) The trade up for Pearce though was a perfect example of the dysfunction of this franchise - Terry Fontenot is on the hot seat. In a draft class where similarly ranked players in Donovan Ezeiruaku (#44) and Mike Green (#59) were examples of the depth at this position...the trading of a 2026 1st was downright irresponsible. Yes, they got a late 3rd rounder (#101) which turned into Xavier Watts, another very good value, but from my POV, the Falcons are still a team on the outside looking in from a competitive standpoint in 2025. I won't project where that pick could wind up draft order wise...but it certainly places even more pressure on a young QB to be successful and produce wins pretty much from the outset of his starting experience.
3) In simply evaluating the players brought on board, it's likely Fontenot's best draft in 5 years. But with many saying that the depth of this draft was it's strength, I'm guessing alot of teams will be able to say that. But the Falcons needed to rebuild their talent base on defense and it would be tough to argue that they didn't take a big step in doing that.
