2025 Detroit Lions: 0-0 Draft, FAs, trades? (15 Viewers)

While I am a Stafford fan, I am a Lions fan first so while I won't necessarily root against him,  I also can't root for him to win because I want the highest draft pick possible for the Lions.
Pretty much where I am. And as bad as that last pick was (1st down play in a situation where a turnover equals an instant loss), if I were a Rams fan I'd be more concerned about their defense. SF went through them like swiss cheese.

The #2 pick guarantees them one of Hutchinson or Thibodeau (assuming they keep the pick). I would be happy with either. And they might have their choice anyways because Jacksonville might go offensive tackle.
Hoping for a good game tonight from Bama offensive tackle Evan Neal, could keep the choice open at edge like you said.

Preliminary Week 18 PFF grades

DETROIT LIONS

Quarterback

Jared Goff played safe football and it worked out for the Lions. He completed only one throw over 15 yards downfield and saw over half of his 238 yards come after the catch. Goff didn’t produce a big-time throw, but he also didn’t give the Packers’ defense a chance to force a turnover with zero turnover-worthy plays. Thanks to that safe play and a 75-yard passing touchdown from wide receiver Tom Kennedy, the Lions had their second-most efficient passing offense of the year with +0.32 expected points added (EPA) per pass play generated.

Running Backs

With under a yard before contact per attempt as a group, the running back room struggled to get much rolling. D’Andre Swift did record two explosive runs of 10 or more yards on his seven carries, but Jamaal Williams — who got the most run of any of the Lions’ backs — didn’t have any. Williams finished with 43 yards, 37 of which came after contact.

Wide Receivers/Tight Ends

The rise of Amon-Ra St. Brown continued in Week 18. The fourth-round rookie once again was the team’s top pass-catcher and could end up with an elite PFF grade above 90.0 for the game. He generated five explosive receptions of 15 or more yards, marking the seventh time this year a rookie pass-catcher has done so. Almost all of his production came when he wasn't up against press coverage:

St. Brown vs. press coverage | Week 18

9 routes

2 targets

1 reception

1 yard

St. Brown vs. No Press | Week 18

21 routes

9 targets

8 receptions

108 yards

Offensive Line

Center Ryan McCollum — a 2022 UDFA — played considerable time for just the second time in his NFL career and was an issue. He allowed a sack, a hurry and lost another rep on his 22 pass-block reps.

Tackle Matt Nelson once again struggled as he allowed four pressures and lost two additional reps on 32 pass-block reps.

The Lions underwent an odd shuffle in the fourth quarter that kicked Jonah Jackson inside to center for the first time in his NFL career, replacing McCollum. Rookie Tommy Kraemerentered Jackson’s spot at left guard and didn’t lose any of his pass-block reps.

Defensive Line

Edge defender Julian Okwara didn’t have his best day against the run, but he was a part of a few high-level plays against the pass. That included a forced fumble, a passing stop, two sacks, a hit and a couple of other pass-rush wins.

Interior defensive lineman John Penisini only rushed the passer eight times, but he did manage a hit and hurry on those reps. He and Okwara were the only Lions to generate multiple non-cleanup pressures for the game.

Linebackers

Fourth-round rookie Derrick Barnes has had a series of poorly graded games in 2021, and that continued in Week 18. He had over double the amount of negatively graded plays as positively graded ones against the run, didn’t win a single one of his five pass-rush opportunities and allowed six catches on six targets for 152 yards and two touchdowns.

NOTE: OK, Nick was as underwhelming as you might expect a 5th rounder to be, but on the “TDs allowed” - 1) pretty sure a scheme that has Barnes covering Lazard is suboptimal, and 2) he got pancaked by a no-call block in the back on the Degurra TD (+ Harris got held by ESB for a good 10 yards.)

Secondary

Will Harris — who moved to outside corner from safety for the first time in his NFL career out of necessity a few weeks ago — allowed a couple of first downs but also forced a couple of passing stops. This should end up his highest-graded game in coverage since moving to the outside.

Opposite Harris was Ifeatu Melifonwu, who allowed 29 yards on 35 coverage snaps.

The Lions most notable performer was slot corner AJ Parker. He allowed only 21 yards on seven targets while forcing an incompletion and passing stop. This will end up the highest-graded game of the UDFA’s rookie season

Jared Goff on Lions letting go of OC Anthony Lynn: “The way he handled himself the whole season is remarkable and truly professional. We really do appreciate it because he could, if he wanted to, have a bad attitude and he didn’t, and it was really cool to see from him."

Zero drama. Had a presser every other week, always said the right thing & supported DC. Some things are bigger than the individual. Never let it be a distraction (& DC kept everything in house.) That’s a pro.

He was def not my favorite hire last spring but #respect

I'm actively rooting for him, the difference in picks is rather miniscule at the bottom of the first round anyway.

Interesting. That's been my view of Lynn for years. Never watched Hard Knocks but heard he came across as a real mensch. At the same time, never thought he was an offensive genius and was genuinely puzzled at the decision to hire him. Not nearly as big a miscue as the Giants hiring Garrett but in a similar vein. I wonder what his future is; feels like he's probably more suited to a HC role than a coordinator, but also not sure his tenure in SD/LA will win him a lot of future opps. Maybe one of those "Assistant HC" roles where he's the head guy's right-hand man?

What will the Lions' plan be to replace him? I'm generally in favor of finding a promising young guy who's ready to move up a level, which is what they did with Glenn this year. (Of course, that also runs the risk that if the guy is successful he will get poached, which also may happen with Glenn.) I guess the question is what does Campbell need, especially since he seemed to have gained confidence in his playcalling ability as the season wore on. Maybe someone who's really good at designing an offensive gameplan?

TEs coach Ben Johnson is being touted as a possibility. He was involved in developing game plans after A Lynn was put on the shelf. Other names I’ve seen put forward:

Buffalo Bills passing game coordinator Ken Dorsey

Saints QB coach Ronald Curry

Lions running backs coach Duce Staley

Michigan Wolverines offensive coordinator Josh Gattis

AFAIK these are media speculation & not confirmed candidates.

Lions coaching staff selected to coach in the Senior Bowl.
I believe recent tradition has been to first offer it to the two worst teams. Campbell has said that while it’s a great opportunity to work with some of the guys on your draft board, it can also skew the evaluation process. Thought it was interesting he was of that mindset. Holmes was a scout when the Rams took Sam Bradford, MCDC was with the Dolphins when they took Jake Long.

Dan Miller talks to Brad Holmes about the season.

The Lions have never really had a competent GM.   Also Mayhew and Quinn basically refused to speak on camera.  To listen to Holmes talk and explain what their process is is quite refreshing to say the least. At least it gives the fans a little insight instead of being left to wonder what is going on.

I know it is early but I think they finally got the right GM in place.

After being nominated five out of the last six weeks, Amon-Ra St. Brown has finally been named NFL Rookie of the Week for the season finale.

(also won RotM for December)

Lions among 3 teams shut out of All-Pro voting; 6 former players jettisoned by Quinntricia earned votes

Safety Quandre Diggs (Seahawks)

Cornerback Darius Slay (Eagles)

Punter  Sam Martin (Broncos)

Kick returner Andre Roberts (Chargers)

Special teams players Miles Killebrew (Steelers) and Nick Bellore  (Seahawks)

The first two played a very high level this year, making the Pro Bowl. Thing about Slay is he can will a team to victory. Saw if several times here and he was off the chain first of this year. We could have those two, Amani and Walker (and would have drafted Simmons instead of Okudah.)

woulda/coulda/shoulda, every team has misfires. But running those two out of town reverberated for years.

_______________

Pride of Detroit says MC/DC has a 96% approval rating. Internet polls don’t mean much but it’s a measure of a successful first year. They played exactly the way he said they would. As Holmes said early last week, 3 wins is not and never will be acceptable. But step 1 was changing the culture. They have done that, both internally and externally. And we all know how cynical and self-loathing the typical SOL fan can  be. I’ve got relatives who never thought they’d get it right are now telling people “this time hits different.”

Virtually no free agents higher than Trey Flowers have wanted to be in Detroit at least the last 5-6 years. I think that’s about to change. Campbell is going to be an asset in attracting UFAs here.

Step 2 is player acquisition. Big off season for Brad Holmes. I’m not expecting a playoff team but I think .500 is realistic if they address some of their issues.

important dates

HBCU Combine 1/28
Senior Bowl 2/5
Scouting Combine 3/1-7
Franchise Tag deadline 3/8

Initial UFA negotiations permissible 3/14-16
3/16 UFA eligible to sign

4/18 off-season workouts begin
4/28-30 NFL Draft

5/6-9 or 5/13-16 rookie camp

I’m a little confused about dates for tendering offers to our internal RFA/FA. Anyone able to EILIA5?

If you ask Holmes and Campbell if they would rather have the 23rd pick or the 26th pick or later, easy answer. I want the Rams to lose but if they do win I'll take consolation in Stafford breaking his cherry.

Also good to see Matty Patty's New England team get smoked by the Bills.

In a further aside, Darius Slay recently said that with the Patriots defensive scheme (see Lions/Patricia) playing so much 1-1 that you are able to determine if a guy is a good CB. He felt that JC Jackson played well for the Pats and would be a good FA signing for other teams.

If the LAR lose tonight we’ll have the 23rd pick for our second pick.

Rooting for Stafford but just don’t see it. To get to a SB he’s gotta beat Kyler, Brady on the road, and ARod in Lambeau over the next 13 days.

Still, would be cool to see him win his first playoff game.

That would be a phenomenal signing whoever lands him Jackson is probably the best press corner in the league rn.

Slay gave up a passer rating of 24.5 this year. Ran back 1 INT and 2 FR for TDs. Got 1 (one) vote for All Pro. Jackson had a man coverage passer rating of 45.2 AND had 8 INTs. Trevon Diggs  graded out 45th in pass coverage when singled up, and 127th (out of 130) versus the run and makes first team alongside Ramsey (who deserved it.) Nailed it AP writers.

Lions players received zero votes this year (50 voters, 24 positions.)

I believe that's for all pro sports teams as well, not just NFL
Correct. In the other three major North American Team Sports, the longest drought since winning a year playoff series are:

MLB - Cincinnati Reds 26 seasons

NBA - Charlotte Hornets 17 seasons

NHL - Florida Panthers 24 seasons

NFL - Detroit Lions 30 Seasons

I didn’t bother looking up MLS or the CFL.

Stafford made a few nice throws - as well as several "just how slow is this guy" scrambles - but McVay and his teammates took the not inconsiderable pressure off him. Great preparation by the LAR last night, their defense and running game were stellar.

If he makes the Super Bowl he's a .500 playoff QB. Just has to beat the Goat and the 2x MVP on the road to do it.

Jimmy G?

Listening to The Ticket today Lions fans are giddy the Rams and Stafford won last night.

I like Stafford but was very indifferent if the Rams won or lost.  Did not care.

I get that some Lions fans like to see Stafford do well and win, but Lions just traded down in the first round from 23 to 26 and got a bumper sticker in return

I was at the game Utley broke his neck at the Silverdome.  Back in those days there were no cell phones, no social media or talk radio.

I knew he got hurt but did not know until next day how bad it was.
I watched that game and while I remember it took a long time to get him strapped onto the board and loaded on a gurney, I don’t remember him giving the thumbs up. Of course for the next month One for the Thumb was the mantra but I don’t think the broadcast even noted it at the time.

That team wasn’t laden with stars. Herman was an unproductive rookie. Couple good O lineman (Brown & Glover), very good NT (Ball) and ILB (Spielman), several decent DBs. But just basic NFL caliber starters, nobody blew you away as being a game changer & elite at their position.

Except for #20, who was absolutely bonkers. Like watching a quick little kid play tag - made defenders look silly on the regular. Never seen anyone like Barry before and honestly there has never been anyone as elusive since. He was one rare cat.

I have a great picture of Barry and myself from 5 years ago.  Barry was at a paid speaking event my wife had organized for a group of HS kids.

Now Barry was great with the kids, but he is not the friendliest person otherwise. At the meet and greet in the lobby Barry was very standoffish to most everyone except he was nice to my wife because she was paying him.  Barry would not sign anything or take any pictures with anyone.

I knew I only had one chance to get a picture.  I gave my wife my phone and said to get ready.  I walked up behind Barry, put my arm around him and said great speech. As he looked up my wife snapped the picture.  I then asked after..was that OK..he just said "I guess" did not matter I had the picture.

I am 6-2 215 so Barry looks really small as he is only 5-9 maybe 190 then but I have it in my office.

Barry used to occasionally show up and play pickup b-ball at Oakland University when I was there. He was really good. He had a crazy vertical and could probably squat the entire gym. He was a super nice guy too.

either way you would prefer the earlier choice not that there's anything that can be done about it at this point.

I think he just isn't a very outgoing person.  I met him when just after his rookie year at a grocery store I worked at.  He was nice, and spoke to us a bit but I just don't think that's really who he is.  I am not a tall guy, only 5'7", and it was weird that he was only a little taller, but his legs were like tree trunks.

Unfriendly was the wrong term.  Barry is just not real social.

My buddy was the GM of a TGIFs that Barry used to go to after practice.  He said Barry would walk  in and go to the bar area and order a large vanilla milkshake to go about once a week. Then go in the hallway by himself and wait until it was ready.

Said it got the the point as soon as Barry walked in my buddy just said "The usual?"  and Barry would say yep.

That’s funny. I was a bartender back when Barry was playing, and the general consensus was that bartending at TGIF would be the worst job ever because they had a ton of ice cream drinks on the menu. Those things are such a pain to make. But damn they were tasty.

About the only bad thing I'd heard about Barry is he's not a very good tipper. But that's consistent with his frugal ways, something that guys like Adrian Peterson could have learned from. Instead of being able to walk away healthy after 10 years, having to scrape up 1 year contracts in order to pay off debts.

That is true as well.

The point is that there isn't much of a difference between the picks, so let us root for success for a good guy who was the face of the franchise for a decade.

At a Lion's fan, it's nice to have something to root for in the playoffs, other than for Rodgers to lose.

Could end up being better than any draft pick.

Anything to increase the odds of Rodgers leaving this god forsaking division and giving not just the Lions but Minnesota & Chicago hope for the future. I would gladly trade down a couple of picks if it meant him leaving.  That said, SF will have to play their absolutely best game to escape the frozen tundra with a win.

And who knows, he might come back anyways. 🙁

guy I went to college with lived on the same street as Barry in Rochester Hills his first house in the 90s was a plain Jane colonial

one year he came to TC & somehow Herman Moore found out he’d bought a car in the off-season

they were ragging on him about getting big time & he’s letting that money go to his head

turned out he bought a pre-owned BMW

Lions now with 2 picks at most 6 picks apart (29 & 34). Could be 30+ if Buffalo wins. Or, naturally, if Rams keep winning.
