2025 Detroit Lions: 0-0 Draft, FAs, trades? (17 Viewers)

@kmeinke

The Lions just announced they’ve sold out season tickets, a first at Ford Field

10:27 AM · Aug 3, 2023

22 seasons, never happened

if you're a Broncos fan, 22 years barely gets you to triple digits on the waiting list

what a time to be alive
I remember just a couple years ago long time holders saying they weren't renewing tickets that were in their families for decades.

was like that for my Uncle, season ticket holder from the late 60s until the mid 00s - three stadiums

MCDC addressed the Zylstra situation to start his presser today

they cut him the day after he got hurt. I know he’ll get an injury settlement but man what a cutthroat life.

anyway, Campbell talked about they don’t want that, it’s preventable, it’s been addressed, but tough break…gotta move

Lions reduced ticket prices last year because of having such poor attendance in 2021 season which was Lions first under Holmes/Campbell. They had the poorest attendance in the NFL that year.

Things have changed. My brother complained about tickets for the Thanksgiving game this year going for $200. Usually @ 30 of us go. This year only 18.

That embarrassing loss resulted in Sheila pulling the plug on the Quintricia era two days later

Within three weeks they made the most important hire of the brand new Lions era

30 days after that Brad Holmes was hired, and a week later DC came to town

it all started in the 4th quarter of that abysmal Thanksgiving game at en empty Ford Field

stunning transformation tbh
Now let’s just not get embarrassed opening Thursday at KC. A good showing will go a long way for this franchise.

This team is legitimately good and well coached. When you build a team with size, strength, speed, talent, discipline, and grit with sound character and highly motivated individuals, it would be hard to believe they will be laying any eggs. There are enough new pieces on defense where there will be growing pains, but legitimately good teams don't get embarrassed.

Probably not but it's also the Chiefs in Arrowhead. We will be rolling out a more talented but new secondary, backfield. The WR and TE room will be all ? after Amon Ra. The Chiefs can absolutely lay it on just about any team in the league at home.

Holmes is really looking long term and building a team that is sustainable to succeeding for many many years. Love that Holmes is trying to lock up core players even a couple years before we lose them.

"Now, we know there’s a business side of it, but it’s easy to identify who those core players are and who those guys who are gonna really be staples in our franchise," Holmes said, during an appearance on 97.1 The Ticket Thursday morning. "Those discussions, we talk about, we’re preparing for. Guys like a Jonah Jackson, we’ve had discussions about that. There’s gonna be a Penei Sewell discussion, a St. Brown discussion, a Jared (Goff discussion). It’s a lot of decisions we’re gonna make, but we’re gonna do the best we can."

10 risers and fallers after the first 10 days of camp:

Risers
  • Rookies - Gibbs, Campbell, LaPorta, Branch, AND Martin have all seen increased reps with the 1s. It’s really encouraging to hear all of their Top 100 picks (sans Hooker) are showing improvement since OTAs.
  • Charles Harris - healthy again, has looked really consistent opposite Hutch.
  • Jemar Jefferson - def fighting to gain one of the final roster spots. Been showing out in STs which is probably the only path for him.
  • Starling Thomas V - when we signed him on draft night I was super excited. It’s a crowded room but I think he’s making the team. Besides great reps in coverage he’s an outstanding gunner on punt coverage. Legit 4.3 speed.
  • Denzel Mims - another guy who is on the bubble and it probably comes down to how many WRs they carry while Jamo is suspended.
Fallers
  • Logan Stenberg - repping with the 3s.
  • Julian Okwara - with Harris taking reps at both DE and Sam, it’s hard to see where he fits bc he’s also behind James Houston IV.
  • Hal Vaitai - since he sustained a back bruise (unrelated to his previous back problems), he’s been losing reps to Graham Glasgow.
  • Antoine Green - fighting for that WR 5/6 spot, has been losing reps to Mims and Denzel Dylan Drummond.
  • Christian Covington - was getting a lot of reps during OTAs and minicamp but struggling to stand out in TC. Behind Levi Onwuzurike rn, may not make the team.

The Lions PR group has to be the envy of the league.

This week they won the Pete Rozelle Award, given annually to the best PR Department in the NFL.

Pretty cool seeing MCDC stick around, standing off to the side watching them receive the award.

Well deserved. Their Inside the Den productions are better than anything put on by local or national media. Great, open, honest insight with awesome production. Can't say much for the local media with a few exceptions.

From Mlive.com

"Williams missed several days with a leg injury earlier in camp, and did not suit up again on Saturday. Then Denzel Mims went up for an acrobatic catch over Tracy Walker, and hobbled off the field with what appeared to be a right ankle injury. He eventually limped to the locker room under his own power.

Trinity Benson suffered another injury in the previous practice, while Tom Kennedy was waived with an injury of his own. With Marvin Jones also missing most of camp with a back injury, it’s been a rough summer at wideout. That’s especially true for Williams, who delivered one really good practice this week, but has otherwise been slowed by injuries and drops."

Sounds like a tough camp for every wideout not named St. Brown

Reynolds and Raymond are WR2 and WR3 until week 6, unless Mims balls out. They seem to be doing fine.

The DL seems like they are really looking great. Hutch is looking like a beast. Alim looks incredible. Pascal has looked good. Houston is doing Houston things. Even the rookie Brodric Martin has been impressive. Nobody expects it, but I see a top 10 defense which is going to elevate this team to be even better than expected, and the expectations are already high.

@BenjaminSolak

Leaving Lions camp. My biggest takeaway: this offense plans on throwing a lot of passes to Sam LaPorta, and he caught everything in his vicinity.

St. Brown, LaPorta, and Gibbs might account for 90% of the targets while Jamo is out.

there's been hints on social media all day but still haven't seen anything official

one of the beats posted a cryptic picture of two gloves this afternoon then deleted it lol

anyway hope they finally do get a deal done, makes a lot of sense

even if he never plays a down, there's too much riding on this season to not have a viable Plan B if the unthinkable happened

Both Freep and Detroit News also reporting it, plus CBS Sports, so I assume it's a done deal.

yeah I see RapSheet was on it 2 hours ago

Lions released LS Jake McQuade - former Pro Bowler but IIRC he’s 35ish (oldest guy on the roster); guess they’re sticking with Scott Daly

K probably goes to Patterson but it’s interesting they’re gonna give Romo a shot in some PS games

This is a very good signing. There simply was no way the Lions could go into the season with Nate Sudfeld as the backup.

Brad Holmes continues to crush it.

Teddy is more delicate than fine china but he can win a game if needed. Sudfield can`t.

From the FP article:

"Bridgewater is 33-32 as a starter in his nine-year career and completed 62% of his passes in two starts with the Miami Dolphins last season.

He also has played for the Minnesota Vikings, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos and New Orleans Saints, when Campbell was an assistant with the team in 2018-19."

Oddly enough, Teddy has never played with the Bears.

Teddy is such a great signing and an extremely underrated QB. I'd honestly very much argue he and Goff are equal talents, though Teddy is obviously less durable. I'm still blown away the quickness guys like Heinicke, Mariota, Darnold, or Mayfield got signed, when a better QB like Teddy sat forever.

I'd very much argue Lionel Messi and I are both equal talents. Obviously I've been slightly less celebrated.

#1 overall pick
Three Times Top 100

Just looking at Appearances on Leaderboards, Awards, and Honors on their respective PFR pages, I've got Teddy appearing in a Top Ten of any of the 41 categories 5 (five times), versus 100+ for Jared. Take any Teddy Bridgewater peak stat and Jared Goff has topped it 5 or 6 times.

I'm taller than Messi and I outweigh him. It's a lot closer than you think.

Sudfeld for sure getting cut now I'm assuming?

Presumably bound for the PS. Hooker will be NFI until further notice. They like Martinez if only bc he's mobile so that gives them a scout team QB for Lamar, Justin, et al. Do teams ever carry two QBs on the practice squad?

They actually like Sudfeld a lot, have seen a lot of offseason praise for his development. At the same time he's not a viable option and Holmes knows that (only 6 game appearances and zero starts over 6 seasons.) With the new 3rd QB rule he could still be the emergency QB without taking up a spot on the 53 man.

I would take all of them over Sudfeld.

Teams always need a cheap emergency QB on the roster. that could be Nate. I just don`t want him having to start a couple of games if Goff hurt his ankle or some other injury.

The Eagles run a ton of RPO's so they require a mobile QB (hence the Mariota signing). When Minshew ran the offense last season, it was night and day to Hurts because he wasn't a threat to run so defending the RPO becomes easy. Bridgewater would have been a terrible fit for the Eagles offense.

I wasn't meaning to be disingenuous. Goff and Teddy have basically the same career completion percentage, yards per attempt, and passer rating. Sure, Goff has higher counting stats, he's stayed healthier and been on better teams most of his career. Teddy's short run with Sean Payton is as good as any stretch of Goff's career. Teddy was literally the better starter in 2021.

Anyways, my point was more that by signing such a high quality #2 QB, the Lions aren't screwed if something happens to Goff. That should make everyone feel a little more secure when drafting Amon-Ra, or Gibbs or whomever.

Cap’n Obvious don’t know Goff had the 5th highest QBR in the NFL. Hint: it’s not a counting stat.

Everyone who is a regular here recognized months ago they needed this signing. This ain’t the Stafford years when it didn’t matter bc they were only gonna win bc he was playing hero ball. Actually built a good team, all three phases, for the first time in franchise history (or at least since when the league had 33-man rosters.)

Too much at stake this year to not have a Plan B. Which hopefully we never implement, bc the Detroit Lions can hang with anyone as long as Plan A is in effect.

They could win the division with Bridgewater, in the worst case scenario. They are Super Bowl contenders with Goff. The two are not analogous.

I don't see any way he stays on the roster as they won't carry 4qbs. Practice squad I could see.

If Teddy tried to run the ball like Hurts does he would be in a world of hurts! Would not last 2 games.

I can't believe it. I just went through the teams in the NFC, and the Lions are the third-best team there if you ask me. Maybe Seattle is there.

But you've got Philly, SF, and then who?

:stalker: I think I see me a contender, and I ain't...lion.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA Charlie Brown.

Seattle is there IMO. I think ATL outperforms and Dallas will have their moments before collapsing. If Fields improves dramatically CHI could pose a problem. BUT, Detroit is potentially right there. It is prove it time for this club as I do not remember the last time we had national hype. I have not been this excited for a season to start in a long time.

Dallas has back-to-back 12-win seasons, is better than Detroit at QB/WR and has a FAR better defense. I like the Atlanta shout out, no reason at all they don't take the South. As much as I'd love the Bears to take that step, the defense might be as bad as anyone in the league.

Just in the division, I think people are being way too dismissive of Minnesota. Sure, they weren't as good as their record last season, but they were still a good team, and have pretty much improved across the board other than DL. Other than Cousins and H. Smith, they are a very young team. Perhaps most importantly, they replaced the worst DC in the NFL, with Brian Flores who many regard as an elite DC.

It is an exciting time to be a Lions fan, probably the most hype they've had since at least Caldwell's 1st year, when the Lions had the #2 defense in the NFL. Hopefully they don't fall to the weight of expectations like they did then.

By Dallas collapsing I did mean in the playoffs. I am down with MIN competing again if Addison proves to be the real deal, but their defense was my big concern. I missed the Flores hiring which will certainly be an upgrade, just not sure they have enough talent on that side to not be in shootouts all year long.

Minnesota will have a better defense simply bc they’ll be running a scheme that makes sense for the personnel they have, especially on the back end. That quarters/quater-half Fangio-style Donatell had them running was a really poor fit.

I read a recent article that said Flores loves to blitz and bring pressure and that his defenses rate among the league leaders in those categories, so that'll be interesting to see MN try to wriggle through Detroit's line, anyway.
