2025 Detroit Lions: 0-0 Draft, FAs, trades? (9 Viewers)

tcb - job well done with some key players missing

another great game from Goff at home, Josh Reynolds stepped up, Monty and the OL were solid

great to see the turnovers though on the whole the defense didn't have their best day

Jamo is a hot mess

def happy to start the year 4-1

Jamo did exactly what he was told. Goff had to move Jamo around a couple times, but it was by design to set up a play late in the 3rd quarter. On a 3rd and 6th play inside the 10, Goff screaming at Jamo to move ended up being the signal to direct snap to Monty, who took the ball 7 yards for a first down. That is the level of mind games that Ben Johnson utilizes.

Has the same thought. Ben often shows defenses the same personnel same look and then WHAM something they’re totally not expecting bc it’s a play they haven’t run before off that platform.

Or as MCDC put it

Strength of Schedule after 5 weeks is not especially sticky. In 1-2 months teams will evolve, players will emerge, injuries will take a toll, etc. Just dumb to look at in Week 6.

That said….

A few random teams remaining SOS (1 being hardest)

4. Philadelphia
9. Dallas
10. San Francisco
31. Detroit

Through the first five games of the season, every opponent has failed to run for 100 yards against the
Lions.

The last time Detroit did not allow 100 rushing yards in any of the first five games of the season was in 1950.

***************

For the first time in Lions history, the team has rushed for 100 yards and held opponents under 100 yards rushing in each of the first 5 games of the season.

This is the first time a team has done so in NFL history since 2007.

***************

Over the last three games, Lions Edge Aidan Hutchinson has combined for 4.5 sacks, 1 INT, 1 FF and 1 FR.

The NFL's last edge player to produce those numbers in a three-game span was James Harrison in 2007.

***************

The only NFL players to total at least 14.0 sacks and 4 INTs through two-career seasons:
  • Lions Edge Aidan Hutchinson
  • Bears HOF LB Brian Urlacher
Hutchinson's 14.0 sacks tie Ndamukong Suh for the 3rd-most a Lion has logged through two-career seasons.

Mosely tore his ACL, think he was coming back from the same injury last year
Detroit secondary is sustaining some major injuries right now

players who have missed games due to injury or gone on IR:
  • Amon Ra-St Brown*
  • David Montgomery*
  • Jahmyr Gibbs
  • Jason Cabinda
  • Shane Zylstra
  • James Mitchell
  • Taylor Decker*
  • Hal Vaitai*
  • Matt Nelson
  • Josh Paschal
  • James Houston IV (not a starter but designated pass rusher)
  • Julian Okwara
  • Emmanuel Mosley (season last 2 snaps but was expected to be a starter)
  • Brian Branch*
  • Khalil Dorsey
  • CJ Gardnder-Johnson*
*starters

Normal stuff in the NFL. You have to construct the roster so you can absorb injuries, because they'll always happen.

Brad Holmes did that. They'll be fine, they are built to withstand adversity.

Our secondary is very suspect right now.

Really the only thing concerning right now is that the injuries are piling up.

Was really looking forward to watching Mosely and Johnson this season. I get the bumps and bruises, missing a game here and there but the season enders need to stop.

Sam LaPorta has the same number of touchdowns as Kyle Pitts in his career.

Kyle Pitts was the 4th overall pick in 2021, LaPorta was the 34th pick this year.

Lions favored by 3 on the road against a team that is 3-1. Lions have had their issues playing at Tampa Bay and the Bucs will be wearing their throwback creamsicle jerseys.

“Outside Goff” has not been as good as the inside version in the past.

So should be a test as to the legitimacy of the Lions as NFC contenders.

Tampa will be a tough road opponent, but a lot has changed in the 3 years since they last played them. And if the Lions do lose it won't be because of the color of Tampa's uniforms.

Trades. Any moves we’d like to see ? Feels like a push some chips in year maybe, but specially given the injured on back end of the D. Surtain ?

Besides getting Starling Thomas back from the Cardinals?

Trade Deadline is Halloween (Tue 10/31) - day after the Week 8 MNF at home v Raiders

Agreed that replacing Emmanuel Moseley is the most logical target

Our DL is playing well and has players who will come back soon. Our secondary is playing OK and it's depth is depleted. A starting DB has to be primary target with depth on OL our secondary need. Brad will only pull a deal if it is cheap in terms of draft capitol and long term commitment. Brad is building towards sustainable success.

Does Hutch typically play over the RT/LT? Moves around? Tampa's tackles have played well this year. I wonder if they can neutralize him somewhat.

From what I’ve seen he mostly lines up against the right side of the offensive line but they do move him to the left from time to time. They have also moved him inside over the guard on obvious passing downs which has been effective. So fun to watch this guy and happy we got ‘em!

Moves around. 3-tech, 5-tech, wide 9….everything except 1-tech. Also drops into coverage frequently (4 interceptions.) Relentless motor but pretty diverse arsenal of moves. Chop & bend, spin, bull rush. He’s heavier & stronger than last year. Plays more snaps than any other elite Edge bc his stamina & fitness is insane.

Early this season Detroit has a 35 yard TD to Kalif Raymond on a Flea Flicker.

They put that play on the call sheet bc Seth Ryan - Rex’s kid, assistant to WRs Coach Antwaan Randle El - noticed the S cheating. Goff and Ben Johnson hyped him up in media interviews.

Similar deal this week. 1) This play came from watching William & Mary film (Colby Sorsdal’s alma mater), 2) Steven Oliver, assistant to OL Coach Hank Fraley, noticed the IDL took a quick breather fm their 3-point to rock back on the haunches or even take a knee. Carolina was ripe for it.

Love that Ben made sure he got the credit in his weekly presser. They’re so intentional with everything they do. Including staff development.

***************

The other trick play, the handoff-reverse-pitch back-wheel route to the TE, copied by the 49ers 6 hours later, has been around for years. Ben previously dialed it up for David Blough (2021? I don’t remember that, probably didn’t work.)

Schefter Lions’ running back Zonovan “Bam” Knight suffered a season-ending shoulder injury Sunday vs. the Panthers, per sources.Knight started four games last season for the Jets before signing with the Lions this past summer.

NBD losing your RB4/STer but that’s six season ending injuries before Week 6.

@davebirkett

No Jahmyr Gibbs, Brian Branch, Jonah Jackson or Teddy Bridgewater at Lions practice today but Sam LaPorta was back. Josh Paschal back at practice from IR, too.

Knight, Garder-Johnson, Mosely, Jefferson, Nelson, and who?

Shane the Insane Zylstra

Also, doesn’t count but Justin Jackson retired and for awhile he looked like a lock for RB3.

And we lost a key ST player to the gambling thing, right?

yeah, S CJ Moore - got the more serious indefinite ban IIRC (can apply for reinstatement after 1 year I believe)

over 1000 special teams snaps the last 4 years. on 3 fake punts under Fipp/MCDC, he had 3 rush attempts for 83 yards, all successful first down plays. the 42 yarder v MIN changed the whole game.

Not bad for a throw in. Still overlooked by many.

To hear people talking around here they think this game is a gimme just like Seattle. Not so sure about that. I think the Lions win a close one.

Another note, like the Tampa Creamsicles better that what they wear now.

Love the Creamsicle, it's the best.

Is that how local radio is calling it this week? ****ing A man, Bucs are a tough out.

Lions announced roster moves today:

Placed on Reserve/Injured:
  • RB Zonavon Bam Knight
  • CBEmmanuel Moseley
Activated from Reserve/Injured:
  • DB Khalil Dorsey
Signed to Active Roster from Practice Squad:
  • OL Dan Skipper
Practice squad elevation:
  • RB Devine Ozigbo
Congrats to Skip! It’s believed skipping OTAs/Minicamp/TC-PS were all part of a handshake deal to call him when needed. Two young kids, wanted an offseason and summer to be with them.

Signing to the 53-man means 3 guaranteed game checks at the vet min. That’s 3x his practice squad vet salary ($17K /week.) Haopy for the big man & his family.

Jonah Jackson out means Glasgow & Vaitai starting together - haven’t seen this G combo but both have been grading out excellent this year. Skip had an exceptionally good debut (PFF 77.5) and can fill in at either G spot & be the swing tackle / 6th OL in short yardage.

Dorsey will likely take over Kickoff returns and Ozigbo will take the Knight / Craig Reynolds ST snaps since #13 is the backup RB this week.

Lions wearing White jerseys, grey pants, white socks. Like that combo.

The only uniforms I don1t like are the all dirty grey color rush ones.

Favored at M&T Bank Stadium?

What is even happening….
Actually I should have made it clearer that it's Balt favored.

OK makes more sense. I forgot how betters typically list the spread (DET +2.5 BAL -2.5) and presumed that was from the Lions perspective.

Good thing I don’t bet. Wanna take a run at explaining the money line to me? lol

Today the Lions are -166
You would have to risk 166 to win 100. You win even if they only win by 1.
Tampa is +140. You risk 100 to win 140.
You would lose if Bucs lost by 1.

Money lines basically buy or sell away the points to make it where it's just pick the winner.

Broadcasters (at least the parts I care to catch) seem to be in the "cautious optimism" category. But there are definitely a share of fans that are about half a step below the old SNL skits involving the Bear Superfans.

Not going to be easy. As has been laid out elsewhere, 3 of next 4 on the road, all those road games against teams capable of making the playoffs. 2-2 isn't what you hope for but certainly could be in the cards, though I'm hoping for 3-1. If Detroit manages to go 4-0 in that stretch, the world may run out of Kool-aid because Lions fans drank it all.

Wifey bought our Ravens tickets early this summer (for my late summer birthday present) by calling the Ravens box office. They were super helpful. 16th row in the section allocated for the Lions player families & non-football staff, behind the visitors bench at the 25 yard line.

Massive difference between coming in 5-1 and 4-2. Hoping they TCB today. Gonna be great either way but would be way more festive if they were on a winning streak.
