2025 Detroit Lions: 0-0 Draft, FAs, trades? (34 Viewers)

Line is holding around -3.5, somewhat higher than the advance line last week. Total is 49.

Advance line for the Jags game is -10/51.
Despite all the news back and forth over who's playing and who's not playing for both teams, line has pretty much stayed the same. -3.5, 49.5.

The NFL fined #Lions DB Brian Branch $20,256 —
I still can't believe ARSB got hit with $43,709 for this block last year.

If you want the shirt Kerby gave out to all his teammates yesterday find it here

(15% off code if you sign up for text)

How do they come up with those fines numbers? Where does the extra 128.00 bucks come from?

Why not make it 9K, 10K, 11K or whatever.

They include tax and credit card processing fees.

Eagles won their 5th straight - need this dub tonight to stay in front

Gonna be tough with no Decker, pretty thin at LB & ST, and Z sitting out this one

Hopefully they stay sharp and don't hurt themselves with missed assignments or turnovers

They're on a nice roll but you guys know how it is in the NFL - they can come out flat any week or just run into a buzz saw

Mixon is on fire and Stroud is exactly the kind of QB we sometimes struggle against

I don't take anything for granted, winning is hard in the NFL

Minus 3 on turnovers and still won on the road? I'll take it.
Over the last 30 years, just two QBs have won games where they threw 5+ interceptions:- Matt Ryan in 2012 (vs. Ryan Lindley/John Skelton, who mustered seven first downs all game)- Tony Romo in 2007 (Bills intercepted Romo five times, scored three return TDs, and still lost)
Goff became No. 3 tonight

The Lions have improved to 8-2 in prime time games under Head Coach Dan Campbell.

Detroit is 8-1 for the first time since 1954.

5 straight road wins - 4 over teams currently in the playoffs - sets a new franchise record.

7 game winning streak ties the single-season franchise record (last - 1995, final 7 games).

EDIT: Modern era....in 1934, Detroit's first season after moving from Portsmouth, the Lions shut out their first 7 opponents and started 10-0.

They finished 10-3 lol.

The next year they won their first NFL title - their last one until the Bobby Layne/Buddy Parker era of the early 1950s, when they won 3 more.

ARSB has produced a receiving TD in seven-straight road games, tied for the NFL's sixth-longest streak since the 1970 AFL/NFL merger.

St Brown also set a franchise record tonight with a TD in his 7th consecutive game.

Carlton Davis III had his first multiple interception game of his career tonight.

16 point comeback was the 11th biggest in Lions history, and the biggest in the Dan Campbell/Jared Goff era.

Goff had never thrown more than 3 INTs as a Lion, and had only one 4 INT game (2018) in his 9 seasons. Tonight he had 5 - the first QB to win a game with >=5 interceptions since 2012.

Dan Campbell said on Thursday when they ran their live end of game drill, Goff got them in position for a 50 yarder with 1 second left. Outdoors, into the wind, Bates made it easily. That's how they ended their practice and he said it gave him a lot of confidence on both kicks that he'd come through.

CORRECTION

Per Justin Rogers, the situational drill was 6 seconds, 1 play, from their own 40. ARSB caught a 17 yard out OOB, special teams ran the hurry up fire drill, and Bates nailed a 61 yarder.

I thought Goff’s passes were fluttering more than I remembered. Wondering if he was playing through some hand injury or if the ankle was effecting the throws.

Think it’s strange that coaches are sitting on the ball at the end of games and intentionally trying to set themselves up to kick 50 yarders to close out a victory.

Prevailing strategy previously was to move the ball as close as you could for the game winning kick. You only kicked the 50 yarder if you had to. Apparently the fear of turning the ball over is greater than the fear of missing a 50 yarder.

I think kickers have gotten better. These dudes never seem to miss anymore.

Unless you’re the Houston kicker… 😂

When I made my playoff picture in the preseason, I said the NFC Championship Game would be Eagles at Lions in Detroit. I also said the AFC Championship Game would be Bills at Chiefs in Kansas City. The AFC's top 2 teams play next week. Unlike the AFC, the Eagles and Lions don't meet at all in the regular season. But, still, it looks like Eagles vs. Lions in Detroit for the NFC Championship Game is where we're headed.

it's been less than a year but the NFC had a 10-1 team last year

that team finished 11-6 then went one and done in the playoffs - with probably the most complete roster in football

respectfully, there's no reason whatsoever to talk about a February game in early November

Detroit is in a good place but 13 weeks is an eternity in an NFL season

I thought it looked more like he was throwing extra cautiously after the 5 ints and over thinking it. Second guessing.
But he, and the whole team, just fought and never game up. Super impressive win.

He threw a lot of ball under duress. Guys pulling on his jersey, balls getting tipped, not having space to step into the throw, having to scramble. Goff has always required a clean pocket and he did not have that last night. Goff is perhaps the most accurate passer when given a clean pocket but one of the worse when he has to go off schedule.

I’m just so proud to be a Lions fan. We NEVER win games like this.
But at halftime I texted a group of my life long friends and told them that we were going to win. It’s just the way this team is built.

This is really fun 🙂

It never felt like we were going to lose. When we would get down with Stafford, always felt like we could comeback and win, but this was more like we will comeback. And most of the difference stems from having confidence that the defense will make some critical stops. We actually have multiple guys on defense who can make that big play, especially BB.

Goff was not sharp but 2 of his INTS his arm was hit, then a Hail Mary that was meaningless. The deep one was terrible throw as he had Gibby wide open in the flat.

The odds of winning an NFL game when a team has 5 turnovers are slim to none. But the Stroud returned the favor with a couple of his own. Defense was outstanding, McNeil was a beast, and welcome back James Houston. Houston was very active and was nice to see him make some plays. Hopefully that continues as Lions need him. Jack Campbell has found a home in the middle.

My wife went to bed at halftime, then got up with 8 minutes left saying she could not sleep thinking about the game. What an ending. Both those FGs seemed to graze the posts.

Is Houston playing DE or SAM? He does get down on the edge and rush the passer on 3rd and long situations, but the sack he got on CJ he looked more like he was hanging back as a LB. I have seen him on coverage on occasion too. So the position they said he could not play, it looks like he is playing. I assume that is because Barnes was about the only person who could.

BTW, he sack on CJ was sweet and saved a TD. To be able to charge him and take down an allusive QB in the open field is good to see. He also got close on another which ended up leading to a sack. He has not shown the burst and the bend to get around the edge he showed as a rookie, but he is showing signs. Multiple breaks in the ankle is a complicated injury which can impact your mobility. Glad the coaching staff did not give up in him.

That would have been an 'L' if we did not pick up Bates. Those were two great kicks, albeit too close for comfort. He hit both straight has an arrow. The 58-yarder from the right hash mark going perfectly straight just to eek inside the right upright by maybe an inch. The game-winner from 52-yards was the exact same kick from the left hash mark, just squeezing inside the left upright by an inch or so. In the outdoors, at least one of those kicks gets blown outside the uprights.

Lions were without Rodrigo & JRM, both of whom have been on the committee filling in for Barnes. JH4 was mostly playing wide 9 Edge but did drop into coverage a couple times.

Goff’s 5 interceptions:
  1. batted ball tip drill
  2. empty hand (usually scored a fumble) pinball off 3 defenders after getting knocked out of his hand
  3. Hail Mary last play of half
  4. ripped an in breaker Sam didn’t get his head around on, great leaping play by Lassiter; they’ve completed that timing route - ball is out before LaPorta cuts - at least 30-40 times the last 2 years, Jared put it where it needs to go, the TE never tracked it
  5. two deep balls to Jamo that Stingley high pointed (dropped 1st one), Williams has to attack those, not wait for it to fall into his lap
Texans came in with a good plan, Sewell was uncharacteristically terrible in pass protection, run game was getting stymied.

On a lot of throws Jared just one hopped it because he didn’t think it was there. Was not their night, but they fought through it and found a way. Sheesh even saw a bad punt from Jack Fox, team was off, that’s gonna happen a few times a year with any football team.

Still found a way. Defense was great again, and Bates was money.

1 game up on MIN & 2 games ahead of GB with the tiebreaker versus both; that’s goal #1, half the remaining games are NFC North battles.

+1.0 v PHI and +2.5 v ARI/ATL

Eagles next 3:
  1. Commanders TNF
  2. at Rams SNF
  3. at Ravens
Lions next 3:
  1. Jaguars
  2. at Colts
  3. Bears
Tough games for both after that but it’s basically 2 teams for the #1 seed.

Jared Goff threw all 5 of his interceptions against zone coverage in the first three quarters.

He then went 6/8 for 79 yards and a touchdown against such coverage during the Lions comeback in the 4th quarter.

Last week's game came very close to both the projected point spread and total. This week it's Jacksonville, with a spread of 13 and total of 47 (right around a 30-17 game). Lions obviously can't let up in their quest for the one seed and the bye.

Houston might have earned some more snaps this week. Looked very active on the field. Then dropped back into coverage and closed fast to make a tackle.

Changed the practice schedule up this week. Walk through only today. They’ve been in pads the last two weeks but it sounds like MCDC is backing off full contact this week.

Laporta DNP, Rodrigo & Decker were limited, everyone else was FP. Sounds like Decker and Melifonwu have a good shot at playing. Sam & Malcolm, it’s day to day.

Lawrence is still out so Mac Jones will get another start. Bigsby DNP, long list of limited including Josh Hines-Allen and Brian Thomas Jr.

Derrick Barnes was in the locker room today for the first time since he underwent knee surgery. He told me he suffered MCL and PCL injuries but the ACL was intact. He's not ruling out a return this season, but sounded realistic about him slim chance to return.

“One day at a time, man.”

Got on an exercise bike today; started his rehab in West Lafayette (Purdue) but now he’ll be rehabbing with Hutchinson for the next 3 months.

88 days to LIX.

In the past 5 games, Carlton Davis has a PFF grade of 82.5, good for 5th among all CBs since Week 6.

Over that span, his passer rating allowed is 25.8 -- 4th-best.

Pressers and scrums: Decker battles FOMO, what Goff said to Campbell, expectations for Smith and more
[Justin Rogers]

Allen Park — Buckle up, this is going to be a lengthy recap.

Not playing worse than injury

Offensive tackle Taylor Decker missed Sunday’s game with a shoulder injury. If it was up to him, he probably would have played, but he said he’s always asked the medical and training staff, led by director of player health and performance Brett Fischer, to protect him if he wants to do something stupid.

“That's their job and that's what they do,” Decker said. “Ultimately, if you leave it up to the player, nine times out of 10 they're going to play, even if they shouldn't. Every game is important to me. We only get to play 17, and, you know, all things are pointing to us being in the playoffs, of course. I have had plenty of seasons where we don't get to (play in the playoffs), so every game is important to me.

“The biggest thing when you're used to being out there with your teammates, and guys you've played a lot of football with, when you're not out there, it's just a ****ty feeling,” Decker said. “It doesn't feel good. You want to be out there whether it's Week 10 and you're mathematically eliminated or it's Week 10 and you're rolling. That doesn't change my desire to be out there and play.”

Decker said he knows the moment he suffered the shoulder injury in practice, but, in reality, it's compounding issue he’s been dealing with for longer than a few days.

“It happened in practice, yeah,” Decker said. “Rotator cuff strain, and then I’ve had shoulder surgery on this shoulder before with the labrum. Just irritated the labrum a little bit. And the week prior, I had a pec strain on the same side. I know the play that happened that caused it, but I don’t know if it was maybe a compensation thing or whatnot. Hopefully, it’s not too long-term.”

Decker said he was feeling decent, and coach Dan Campbell was optimistic about the lineman playing this Sunday against Jacksonville, although he expected to have more clarity after Thursday’s full-go practice.

The most difficult part of sitting out was watching the team struggle last Sunday against the Texans. Watching from home, Decker acknowledged feeling at fault.

“I felt personally responsible for the first half of that game, and I’m not saying that jokingly,” Decker said. “I felt really bad, even though I know it was in my best interest and the team’s best interest to sit that one out. (But) just when you’re not out there with your guys, especially when it’s guys that you’ve played with as much as I’ve played with some of these guys on offense, it’s like a guilty feeling. It really is. As soon as you can get back out there, that’s one thing that’s going to drive you to want to be back out there, is when you don’t get to be.”

Dan Skipper made his first career start at tackle in place of Decker, and the starter praised his backup’s effort, which included requiring multiple IVs to get through the contest.

The Lions opted to keep Penei Sewell at right tackle against the Texans because of how late in the week — and game-planning process — Decker’s injury occurred. Had they known earlier, Campbell said they likely would have started Sewell on the blindside.

Built different

In the chat this week, one of you asked what quarterback Jared Goff said to Campbell after the Houston game. Well, good news, someone asked the coach on Wednesday.

“He said, ‘We’re just different,’” Campbell said. “That’s really what he said, ‘We’re just different.’ And I agreed with him, we are. That’s the way we’re built.”

A few minutes later, in the locker room, I asked Goff to elaborate on the conversation, given he’s been on a number of good teams both here in Detroit and in Los Angeles.

“Yeah, every team’s different,” Goff said. “I think my notion there was that the adversity we’re built for is different than every other team in the league, and I think I said it after the game.

“It truly is,” Goff continued. “There are a lot of good teams in our league, but you’d be hard-pressed to find some who have been through what the core group of this team has been through. So in a game like that where you dig yourself in that big of a hole, knowing we’re built for that and built to come back in those instances.”

Surprise appearance

In a surprise, Derrick Barnes was in the locker room on Sunday, and despite being sidelined by a knee injury that’s still expected to be a season-ender, the veteran linebacker was his gregarious self.

Barnes said he’s been aggressively attacking his rehab after surgery and noted he was shocked by his ability to ride an exercise bike when asked on Wednesday.

He’s not naive. He knows a comeback this season is unlikely, but he’s not giving up on the idea.

"One day at a time, man,” Barnes said. “You know, obviously, I have those thoughts in my mind, but I think if I just focus on the now, then I think that'll get me where I want to go.”

Barnes was injured on a cut block, when the pulling blocker dove directly into his knees. The play is legal and relatively common, but Barnes believes the NFL should re-evaluate the strategy.

“I think it should be banned,” he said. “I think that the offense gets a lot of leeway, more than a defense. It's football, though. I never sit there and complain about it. I do the hitting and then when I get hit, something like this happens. But nah, I don't really agree with the play. But like I said, it is football, it does happen. You know, I would never wish that upon anybody.”

Pressers and scrums (concluded)

Expanding the repertoire

Running backs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery have been far more productive in the passing game this season, both via check-downs and screens. Position coach Scottie Montgomery credited the team’s wide receivers for playing a big role in unlocking that component of the scheme.

“Our receivers are flying off the ball,” Scottie Montgomery said. “We’re utilizing the speed of our receivers. And one of the reasons why the passing game has gotten better for the backs is some of those check-downs that we’re getting. You guys have seen some major check-downs that have turned into big plays, also screens.

“That’s why I really commend our receivers,” Montgomery said. “They come off the ball flying, 15 yards of just pure burst.”

Montgomery, the coach, also noted there was a point of emphasis with all position groups this offseason on making defenders miss after the catch. Detroit is currently averaging 6.9 yards after the catch, which ranks second in the NFL.

Mentality over production

Amon-Ra St. Brown is having a good season, but the numbers are below the lofty production bar he’s established. After racking up more than 1,500 yards last season, he’s on pace for fewer than 1,000 in 2024.

I asked position coach Antwaan Randle El how the All-Pro is handling the decreased usage.

"'Give me the ball,’ which every receiver does,'“ Randle El said, laughing. “At the end of the day, he's a team guy, man. And that's what we love about him. I think he had a couple games where he hadn't got a target until like the second quarter or mid-second quarter, and that's going to happen. He understands that.

“A lot of it has to do with what we have on offense,” Randle El continued. “We have some weapons on offense. He's one of them. At the end of the day, it's about the team and being a team player. And he understands that. He shows that. Because when he's not getting the ball, he's doing the other stuff that needs to be done.”

Randle El can relate to St. Brown’s quiet frustrations. Early in his playing career, the Steelers were a run-first team that passed the ball fewer than 400 times in a season more than once.

I asked how he coped with that reality given how much every receiver wants the ball.

"It's great when you're winning,” Randle El explained. “And we were winning a lot. That's hard when you're not. …But at the same time, team players, you know what it's going to take to get to those (wins). You just got to be ready. You've got to run the route, block, and when it's time to make the play, you got to make it. That's when it's really crucial. When the ball ain't going (to you) that much, and you do get an opportunity, you've got to take full advantage of it."

Lion wins again

The Lions snagged another Player of the Week award, the team’s sixth in seven games. This one went to kicker Jake Bates for his late-game heroics against the Texans on Sunday, capping the team’s rally with makes from 58 and 52 yards in the final five minutes.

Those are his two longest kicks of the season.

Scouting report on newcomer

Decker watched the Bates’ game-winner from home, while in bed next to his sleeping wife.

“I was just trying to stay still and be quiet,” Decker said. “I did wake her up and tell her we won. She was like, 'That's great,' and went back to sleep.”

While Decker didn’t make the trip to Houston, staying back in Detroit to get treatment on his injured shoulder, one of his favorite parts of watching the game on TV was watching how engaged new teammate Za’Darius Smith was on the sidelines.

Decker knows Smith well as a foe, given they overlapped four seasons as divisional opponents. As someone who has always taken detailed notes on opposing edge rushers, I knew Decker could offer as good a scouting report as anyone on the recent acquisition, so I asked.

“First and foremost, I've always just liked him as a person,” Decker said. “He's always been a cool guy. …As far as a rusher, I've always said he's got incredibly violent hands. He was like that back when he was in Baltimore, and we've obviously seen him for a while in our division here. Incredible violent hands, powerful guy, and I think one thing is he's able to line up all across the (front). You'll see him over the center, you'll see him over guards. Then, tons of times, he'll be lining up one-on-one with an offensive tackle.

“Then for him, I think he's got some of that swagger, that confidence,” Decker said. “We've got some young guys playing out on the edge and I think it was really cool — I stayed home for this past game, but seeing his engagement in the game on the broadcast, you can just tell he's super excited to be here. I'm pumped to have him.”

Smith is expected to debut this Sunday. Lions fans are understandably thrilled and have swelling expectations, but Campbell has a more conservative viewpoint on what he wants to see out of the veteran defender.

“I’m not going to be looking at the stats,” Campbell said. “I just want to know that he’s doing his job and he’s as productive as he can be in that. …Just go in there, and if you do your job, and you’re able to push the pocket and (Josh) Paschal gets one, or Alim (McNeill), then we’ll know you did your job. That in itself is going to count for a lot.

“…I’m looking for a complementary piece and somebody that’s going to be able to help our defense, that’s going to elevate us a little bit, and I think that he’ll do that for us.”

Third-year surge

Speaking of Paschal, Campbell offered a rave review of the third-year defensive lineman’s impact against Houston.

“I thought he played really well,” Campbell said. “It was good to get him back. It was noticeable having him back in our rotation on that d-line. Even with being off that week or two, I feel like he improved, even from the last time that he played. He is physical on the perimeter. You talk about crushing the edge, setting an edge in the run game, and then pushing the pocket, transitioning into rush, chasing the ball down, relentless effort.

"He’s us," Campbell said. "It’s one of the reasons that he’s here. But now that he’s had his chance to really step up and play a significant amount of reps for us, he’s making the most of them."

Paschal missed two games after needing to have a mass removed from his shoulder that was discovered during an annual cancer screening. Against Houston, he played a season-high 61 snaps, tallying five tackles, a sack and a second tackle for loss.

As a starter in the past three games he’s been active, Paschal has had 2.0 sacks and two tackles for loss.

Injury report

The Lions didn’t practice on Wednesday, instead conducting a walkthrough. That means the day’s participation report was an estimation. Within that, tight end Sam LaPorta was projected as a non-participation due to the shoulder injury he suffered against Houston.

Decker (shoulder) and linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez (ankle) would have been limited.

Special play on special teams

Rookie Sione Vaki’s impressive special teams tackle on Sunday didn’t go unrecognized in the running back room. Scottie Montgomery made sure of that.

“We talk about that, believe it or not,” Montgomery said. “We like going viral, especially in the room with special teams, because it’s the time where they can see our room in another light, not just carrying the football. …To tackle two guys, that’s why we’re playing. So we continue to see him get better, I’m looking forward to seeing him get a lot better.”

There is potential that we get several key Lions defensive players back. Moseley is on the mend and might be back soon. Iffy is not too far behind. Barnes could be healthy by late December. And Hutch could be ready by the NFCCG. Lots of variables on recoveries and probably over optimistic for Hutch and Barnes, but yet possible.

Moseley could be our #2 CB, although Terrion has been improving week after week. Iffy has looked phenomenal at times in the past, but with BB and Kirby playing all-world, not sure where he fits in. Barnes would easily be our SAM. And their is no question Hutch is the man.

Lions have two open roster spots rn. Brodric Martin, Ifeatu Melifonwu & Emmanuel Moseley all started their 3-week IR-R practice window last week.

DL John Cominsky would be another potential IR-R reinforcement.

I don’t expect Barnes to make it back during the regular season or the playoffs. But as with Aidan, there’s an very slim outside chance they would be ready on February 9th.

Regardless I think it’s great for both their respective rehab and the esprit de corps of the team to have the goals they are shooting for.

You know, I would never wish that upon anybody.”

continued in next post

Need Decker back. Skipper is OK is a big package and a play here and there, but his limitations come out when he is in the whole game.

Also and this goes for the Tigers too. When a team gets a potentially good player I always wanted them to make a "2 year" prove it deal. Like Jack Flaherty and Carlton Davis. If it works out teams have an extra year, if not so be it.

I guess the player has to be on board with that as well.
