2025 Detroit Lions: 0-0 X-Season in the books. Time for final cuts. (19 Viewers)

Dan Campbell isn't doing his self any favors.  Reeks of meathead in his pressers.
Campbell reminds me of Ditka but more intelligent. I think he's whats needed to bring the change of culture this team so desperately needs.

2021 captains, as voted by the players:

Offense: Goff & Ragnow

Defense: Alex Anzalone & Trey Flowers

Special Teams: Reeves-Maybin

I keep looking at the schedule and have a hard time finding more than 4 wins.  Some ESPN pundits are saying 2-15.

Come on man...Lions have to win at least 3-4 right??

5-12

1. 49ers LOSS

2. @ Packers (MNF) LOSS

3. Ravens WIN

4. @ Bears WIN

5. @ Vikings LOSS

6. Bengals LOSS

7. @ Rams LOSS

8. Eagles LOSS

10. @ Steelers LOSS

11. @ Browns LOSS

12. Bears (Thanksgiving) WIN

13. Vikings LOSS

14. @ Broncos WIN

15. Cardinals LOSS

16. @ Falcons WIN

17. @ Seahawks LOSS

18. Packers LOSS

The schedule is tougher, but this team will play much better this year than they did last year under the idiot Patricia.  They will pull of 7 wins including three within the division.

4 wins.

I could see splits with the Vikings and Bears and 2 wins vs any of these 5 opponents: Bengals, Eagles, Falcons, Broncos, Cardinals.

I'll roll with 5 and hope to see improvement as season rolls on. They are very thin at several positions so that injuries could see them get worse as season progresses.

Sewell to me is a key player. If he is a whiff, that has several negative omens for the team's future.

First, it puts into question Holmes judgment and ability to be the top guy. The video of the Lions draft room jumping for joy over the Sewell selection would become one of those cold takes that haunts Lions fans for a dozen years.

If Sewell whiffs, it means the OL will not be the gem and building block we  are hoping for but at best an average line with some holes on the right side.. Which also means Goff's performance will likely not be pretty.

I'm hoping for the best and like the spirit that Holmes/Campbell has brought to the the start of the season. I was in favor of starting the build in the trenches and I guess seeing what Goff can do before taking a QB.

The guy is 20 years old, moving to a different position, and did not play last year.  Lions were not looking at this year when they jumped up (like Cinci fan might have done), if they were looking to protect their franchise QB instead of drafting his college buddy WR.  This is a long term rebuild and offensive linemen are a key part of that. If they go 0-17 it might even help them the next couple of years.

The Lions are underdogs in all 17 games rn. The only games Mike Clay has them with a 35% or more win probability are these four:

6. Bengals WIN

8. Eagles WIN

12. Bears (Thanksgiving) WIN

16. @ Falcons WIN

This being the NFL they’ll lose a few we thought they could have won, and they’ll upset some teams we have no business competing with (i.e., week 15 one win Jets over ten win Browns.) It’s a tough schedule for a team with so little credentialed talent. I think games against low volume, slow pace offenses will be their best chances to win a few this year.

I hate to already look ahead to the draft but my current favorites for the Lions are Kayvon Thibodeaux, Aidan Hutchinson and Matt Corral.

Looks like the Lions really want Trinity Benson in the starting lineup sooner rather than later.  We will see how ready he is for week one.  Amon-Ra and Trinity may be the main Detroit WR this season.

“We’re going to certainly want to try and use Trinity if we can. We’ll see where Hodge is at. But yeah, we take them as far as we can take them and by the end of the week, let’s see how comfortable he is with the offense. Where’s his knowledge at? Do we feel good about it?.”

Whether Benson winds up active Sunday remains to be seen. But he has people in his corner such as Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes, who was so impressed with Benson’s game film that he didn’t want to risk missing Benson through waivers.

“I think that he can be a very productive receiver for us, I do,” Campbell said. “I love his tape. I’m not going to lie to you. … He’s got some twitch about him, he’s got plenty of speed and he’s pretty polished. …

“We came out here Monday and to watch him run around and do some of our one-on-one routes and routes on air and things of that nature, I was pleased. He’s got a little something to him, which is another reason why Brad made the move that he did. We like this guy. We think he can really help us, I do.”

Matt Nelson (converted d-lineman) will be the starting LT Sunday

:confetti:

Taylor Decker has a finger injury. I guess we’ll wait for details but don’t guys usually just throw a cast on, take some oxy and play through it?

OMG, someone talk me down from this insanity.

:suds:

I doubt they run the table but I do envision the five game Bears thru Falcons stretch to be their 2021 peak (presuming reasonably good health)

Humor me for a hypothetical:

  • Goff plays like Tannehill 2.0
  • Hock earns 140+ targets
  • Swift stays healthy all year
Best case scenario? That’s top 8 QB, top 4 TE, top 15 RB

I’m thinking they still have a losing record.

Dan Campbell said Decker will be out “for awhile” with a hand injury.

Rookie OT Penei Sewell will be Detroit’s LT and he’ll face Nick Bosa in his NFL debut.

LFG

This team has little to no depth, massive weakness in the middle of the back 7 (8 I guess, depending on how you look at it in a 3-4), and as of yet unproven CB play.  I think this will be a rough season.  I love the new coaching staff, I love the attitude around the team, I like the direction they seem to be heading.  This isn't the year to look for W/L results, in my opinion.  The thing I will be looking for is are they fighting until the end, which I hope to see, and progression from some of the key young players.

Out of the gate Lions reshuffling OL which was to be the teams best unit. Moving the rookie to LT is going to make things tough against a tough SF pass rush. Here's hoping Sewell shows promise. Interesting start to the season for sure.

Will welcome an aggressive Lions pass rush compared to Patricia's passive approach which had far too many ineffective 3 man rushes.

Hope Lions can keep this game close.

‘twas gonna be a rough outing for the O line either way so #### it, let’s see just how bad Penei is. Let’s figure out how to coach him up. He had a low preseason grade but it was 22 snaps. Let’s get a look at 65.

Wouldn’t it be wild if Sewell plays outstanding at LT, so good that they tell Decker he needs to learn how to play RT when he comes back? That’s a big part of the rookie’s struggles, everything is the opposite - different punch hand, opposite footwork, unfamiliar leverage, so maybe. Maybe, but not likely, as the 49ers have one of the better edge rotations in Nick Bosa, Arik Armstead, and Dee Ford. Well, Bosa is coming off ACL and hasn’t played since Week 2 2020. It’s possible he’s not Superman.

The kid is a huge part of the rebuild. We’ve got got four good ones under team control for the next 3-5 years and they’re 21(in a few weeks), 24, 25 and 28. That’s dreamy cornerstone stuff BUT their first pick can’t be a whiff. He has to play like a guy who had the highest offensive tackle grade ever.

Om the other side, they really need Levi, Alim and Barnes to be who we think they are. Pretty good so far, now let’s see it for real. We think Okuduh and Iffy are the right guys, but in order for them to be successful, we need to front 7 to generate pressure. We need Okwara and Flowers to play like they’re capable of, bc we’re not at a huge disadvantage on the Edge.

Their special teams could allow a long punt return. It wouldn’t be shocking if Jimmy Garoppolo threw some untimely interceptions. They have a 6’8” 291 RT (Mike McGlinchey) who is an elite run blocker; he was also fifth-to-last in true pass set grade. That’s an exploitable advantage for Aaron Glenn & Co. Let’s think about what we can do to them instead of worrying about what they’re gonna do to us.

This is a 10 loss team that is a -7.5 favorite. They’re feeling more pressure than DC and his staff. Shanahan is a brilliant offensive mind, but if he keeps on losing 10-12 games three out of every four that genius label ain’t gonna get tossed around much longer. You better not lose to the Lions.

It shouldn’t be close, but this is why we settle it on the field and not in a classroom.

Hock is a problem, every ####### week. Swift has got some twitch. It’s within the range of outcomes Goff is average and doesn’t suck nearly as bad as everyone says (imagine that, Eagles fans with the 35th and 37th rated passers in a clean pocket telling us our QB blows.)

LFG. One week closer to the number 2 pick next year. Or better than anyone thought they could be. Either way I’m looking forward to it.

Unfortunately Brockers and Levi are both questionable.  Lions OL and DL were supposd to be the areas they were building around, but week one is not looking good for either.  The Lions are too thin to handle those injuries.  Hopefully Decker only misses a few weeks and hopefully Sewell looks good going back to LT.

True Lots of pressure to not lose to Lions and SF has no tape to compare this team's schemes to.

5 wins

...

15. Cardinals LOSS

...

18. Packers LOSS
I like most of your picks, but I think they have a good shot at both of these.

Week 18 I think there is a very good chance that GB will either have wrapped up a playoff home game and sit Rodgers for playoff health... OR.... the Packers will have disappointed and want to see Love play in the last week of the season to decide if they can count on him in 2021.... OR.... a 38yo QB will have not made it through 18 weeks healthy. All sorts of possibilities.

Week 15 I can imagine ARZ having a disappointing season in just a brutal division and kind of sliding through the end of the schedule.

7-10 which is well above the 4.5 wins Las Vegas is expecting.

Well at least the Lions looked better than the Packers.

And after the Bears get their butts beat, the Lions will be in first.

Was there any surprising developments today? I don’t think so.

  • Goff has no vertical ability
  • the two best weapons are Hock & Swift
  • Jamaal has a defined role
  • the defense will be better than last year but still light on talent
I’ll give them credit for hanging in there and making it close. But most of that was probably just the 49ers playing soft.

ARSB was much less of a factor than I thought he would be.

When the game was still competitive I don’t remember any WR making a play. Early on it was strictly Hock and the two backs.

Seibert looked OK, right? Missed the 51 yarder after the turnover, made from 49. Our punter is amazing. So we got that going for us, which is nice.

One man's opinion:

Positives:

They kept fighting to the end. Patricia's teams quit way too much. Was nice seeing the fans into it late. I also like Campbell being aggressive by going for it on two early 4th downs.

I thought Sewell played decent after giving up an early sack. Given no Decker, I thought the O-line in general did a pretty good job protecting Goff and was very good in run blocking.

Hockenson was great and pretty much uncoverable.

The running backs were both great.

The D-line was not great but better than last year. The terrible inside LB and safety play made it look worse because they could not fill the gaps and when they did they missed tackles. There were some good plays including a great forced fumble by Flowers.

Jack Fox was Jack Fox.

Negatives:

The inside LBs were really bad. Collins made a couple of plays but missed tackles and was out of position way too much. Anzalone was worse and looked really slow. I never saw him make a play. Just plain terrible. I want to see Barnes play. He has to be better than those two.

The safeties were even worse. Will Harris was really bad last year and somehow was even worse today. He should not be starting.  Walker was not as bad but at least he made a few plays.

The corners weren't very good but some of it was no safety help. Okudah had Samuel blanketed on the long TD but didn't adjust to the ball. He also made a terrible play on the long TD run.

The WRs are not very good but I would still like to see them get more targets earlier in the game. They made some plays though. Cephus looked pretty good.

Goff was not very good. He can't throw beyond 10 yards. He even missed some 3 yard passes in the flat. The pick 6 was a terrible decision and a backbreaker. What a huge drop off from Stafford.

Pretty much what I expected. The biggest issue by far is the middle of the back 7. They were really bad and made it tough to judge the D-line and corners.

Nick Bosa on Penei Sewell:

“He’s going to be good. He’s more comfortable on the left, and I could tell from the tape I saw of him on the right. I told him after the game he’s better on the left.”

Did give up the sack early but that was after Goff did his reverse spin and went outside containment. Overall pretty solid debut for Sewell.

Goff’s pocket presence....well I’m no expert but looked like he did the same thing on the sack Jackson gave up, spun around and then slid outside the containment.

Gotta believe the O-line will grade out nicely. Good run game, decent protection. They were mistake probably be today and the D couldn’t stop the run or the pass. But still some positIves to build on.

_______________

49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo throws traveling 15+ yards in the air in 2020: 5-of-16 with no TDs and 3 INTs.

Garoppolo Week 1 on such throws: 5-of-5 for 184 yards and a touchdown.

We’ll get AR12 turned around next week.

Preparing for the Lions should be called QB Confidence Week.

Disappointed in the performance of Goff and the entire defense.  I was expecting better pressure on the QB and decent coverage.  Did not happen.  Goff just sucked.  You have to be able to throw some downfield.

Best thing that happened to Sewell was Decker getting hurt so he can show off his strengths.  OL did its job, RB and TE positions looked real good.

Won't happen, but Cam Newton could make the Lions competitive in this lamest of lame division.

The Lions defense really misses Slay.  Stupidest move in Detroit's history which is compounded by the Okudah pick and likely injury/bust.  A real double whamy

WR were not even thrown to, but they seemed OK on the rare instances they were.

Cam Newton is worse than Goff and just about every other QB throwing beyond 15 yards downfield (something like 45th out of 48 QBs). Also, he can't play defense.

PFF graded Sewell as the 5th best OT this week. Not bad for a rook going against Bosa. Looks like the Lions got a real one here.

More tests tomorrow but Kyle Meinke said the team is fearful Jeff Okuduh tore his achilles in the 4th quarter.

:kicksrock:

Feel bad for Jeff that he is hurt but it won`t impact defense.  Jeff is getting beat right off the line almost every play. Looks totally overmatched in the NFL game.  Was OSUs defense that good where he looked beter than he actually is?

Other than arm strength The result reminded me of many of Stafford`s games.  Get behind early and then get lots of garbage time stats. Remember Lions do not have a WR that can make plays either. No Calvin, no Galladay...nobody.

If Okudah did tear his achilles his career might be over as he could not keep up when 100%.

Sewell needs to play LT and be a fixture there for the next 10-12 years.  Move Decker to RT when healthy.

Team played hard but Quinns drafts left the cupboard bare.   Team just lacks talent on defense and needs WRs.

Watching the Dallas-TB game it does not seem right that they had 6 WRs on the field not counting Gronk that were all better than any one Lion WR.
