2025 Detroit Lions: 0-0 X-Season in the books. Time for final cuts. (17 Viewers)

And is probably the more appropriate conjunction there, Jon. Gonzo was marginally better than Bullock but his career FG% is under 80%.

Of course we are used to continuity and excellence at K. Only 3 K cover like 40-1/2 of the last 41 years - Eddie Murray, Jason Hanson, Matt Prater (we wasted. a draft pick on Nate Sumtin’, didn’t work ou.). Take back to Errol Mann 534 points 1967-72, always been a point of pride.

which is sort of part of the problem.

who the #### cares about kickers? or tight ends? why do we have 50+ years of expending draft capital on low value positions when other teams resolve it on Day 3 or through UDFA? Spent a 2nd on Hanson, we got 21 years out of him. Great pick? No, it’s a ####### horrible pick despite it working out. Nobody else spends a top 20 pick at TE, maybe once every decade league wide. We spent three Day One picks (two Top Tens) at tight end. It’s shameful.

Waiver claims typically start around noon. Same order as the draft, we’ll have 7th pick (Jax-NYJ-Hou-Atll-Cin-Phi-Det) so we will probably see Holmes trying to upgrade the margins. Waivers only apply to players with 4 years or less service prior to the trade deadline. Vested veterans were released outright yesterday and are free to sign wherever they desire. After the in-season trade deadline, all players go through the waiver process.

I wouldn’t mind rolling the dice on Kirk Merritt as well. Came into the league raw with upside and had a great camp with the Dolphins.

Athelete. Speed, burst, & catch radius are 94th to 99th percentile. Cam literally jump over tall buildings in a single bound.

  •  4.33 in the 40-yard dash (2nd among combine WRs)
  • 4.02 in the 20-yard shuttle (1st among combine WRs)
  • 45.5-inch vertical jump (1st among combine WRs)
  • 23 bench press reps (1st among combine WRs)
  • 11'3” broad jump (3rd among combine WRs)
maybe sign him as Amon-Ra’s personal trainer if the player thing doesn’t work out.

I’m not gonna look fir the story now, but I’m referring to the legendary workouts of ARSB. When he was at USC, he worked out with his brothers and/or his dad at home. Once in awhile a friend from the team would join them. Nobody ever came back for a second workout bc it was so insane, nobody could keep up.

(credit to his Mr Universe father - never hung around his kids practice facilities in h.s. or college, never interfered with coaches or the program.)

After practices this summer, ARSB would try to persuade Goff or another QB to stat late. Whether he succeeded or not, he finished the drills portion of his day by catching 201 balls from the Juggs machine.

Then he would go workout.

Not super athletically gifted, he has a Day 3 talent. But madone, the kid’s work ethic is off the charts.

Check out Merritt's twitter account for some nice plays as a WR. Most Miami fans said to cut the Unicorn, who's always injured, or Grant who is a great return guy but has the dropsies as a WR. Merritt has made progress as a WR, so it's likely some team will snag him. Before the season, it was unlikely Mack Hollins would make the team, but he developed chemistry with Tua with the top WRs out for so long, plus he's a gunner on PRs.

Nobody claimed Tyrell Crosby, so he reverts to the Lions IR.

When a non-vested player (someone with less than four years of experience) gets cut, he is subjected to waivers, which gives every team 24 hours to claim him. The player becomes a free agent if he is not claimed on waivers. When a vested veteran is cut (released) in the preseason, he can immediately sign with any team.

In regards to injuries, vested veterans can be put directly on injured reserve without being exposed to waivers. But up until rosters are cut down from 90 to 53 players on Sept. 2, injured non-vested players must be placed on waivers through the waived/injured designation before being placed on injured reserve.

This measure prevents teams from stashing young players on injured reserve. Once a waived/injured player clears waivers, he reverts to the team's IR.

Looking at Godwin Igwebuike and learned he will turn 27 this year and is a former XFLer. Not part of the youth movement for the Lions, they must like him. If he sticks could be an interesting story.

Detroit claimed former Bengals' kicker Austin Seibert on waivers.

Lions also claimed former Browns' WR Khadarel Hodge.

Seibert was not a good pickup.  The dude only mkaes 86 percent of his extra points, should be 95 percent.  Only makes 66% from 40-49 yards, should be 75%.  Only 1 for 3 beyond 50, too little data to judge but not impressive.

It is easy to take a FG kicker for granted.  But when a crappy kicker costs you a second game, you begin to rethink that strategy.  $3 million for a kicker like Prater is easily an additional win per season over a guy like Seibert.

I likr Khadarel Hodge.  Elite athelete like Perriman but younger and without the baggage and drops.  Has a chance to develop.

Hopefully Hodge can also stay healthy because Perriman was never able to from his first year on.

switched positions this year, right? from DB to RB. very good athlete but this is his 5th NFL team and he has zero non-ST snaps.

fits the new regime mode - team captain at Northwestern, goes all out. not much talent on this roster but they are getting their kind of guys.

Trying to think of other players who made a switch from DB to RB and drew a blank. He was a RB in high school so that helps.

I understand the skepticism and negativity towards a team which stunk last year and has a 60 year history of disappointing.  I am usually a skeptic.  However, this is not a crappy team.  This will be by far the best Defensive unit we had since 2014.  Lots of youth and unproven talent, but the talent and athleticism is there along with great positional coaching.  Our DL along with Flowers and Okwara is going to put enormous pressure on QB.  Something we never saw during fatty Patty's reign.  I have complete confidence Aubrey Pleasant is going to mold the young and talented secondary into a very good unit.  This defense is far better than anyone thinks.  Of course there will be a growth curve.  But this unit will come together to form a very solid unit this year.

Damn, I even see our WR group as good.  Out of the seven guys on the roster, 4 are really going to step up and perform.  All these guys have great hands and can get open.  Nobody knows who these guys are, but once they start catching 5 balls for 100 yards and a TD, people are going to learn who they are quickly.  The Bears can have someone with more of a name like Perriman, but who wants a WR if you have no idea if he is going to hang on to the ball or not?   And the OL, TEs, and RBs are playoff caliber now.  People doubt the unknown, but these guys will not remain unknown for long.  By week 4, the idea the Lions are the bottom of the NFL will be long forgotten.

I sure hope you're right but imo the offense is going to stink and the second level of the defense still needs significant upgrades.  Until/unless Goff can prove he can throw the deep ball, and our unproven WRs can actually get open and catch them, opposing defenses are going to stack the box and double Hockenson.

Interesting rules for PS, protecting players, and the flexible 53-man (actually 55 if they choose):

  • The NFL expanded practice squad rosters to 16 players last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and kept the numbers the same for the 2021 season as well.
  • Teams can carry up to 6 practice squad spots on players with unlimited experience in the NFL. The remaining spots are filled with players having less than two accrued seasons.
  • Teams will also be allowed to protect up to 4 players per week that other teams cannot sign.
  • The 12 players who are not protected will be eligible to sign with another team's active roster during the week and have to be on the active roster for at least three weeks.
  • Rules also allow teams to promote two players from the practice squad per week without the need to create a roster spot – essentially creating a temporary 55-man roster.
  • Those players are eligible to play in that week's game, and they revert back to the practice squad at the end of the week without having to pass through waivers.
Practice Squad

1. QB Steven Montez
2. LB Tavante Beckett
3. OLB Rashod Berry
4. NT Miles Brown
5. S Jalen Elliott
6. K Zane Gonzalez
7. DE Bruce Hector
8. G Tommy Kraemer
9. TE Alize Mack
10. WR Javon McKinley
11. RB Derrick Mills
12. Darrin Paulo
13. RB Craig Reynolds
13. CB Nickell Robey-Coleman
14. WR Sage Surratt
15. TE Brock Wright

Brown and Hector both had an excellent camp and played well in the preseason.

The Lions are only carrying two TEs on the active roster, Hockenson and Fells. Mize will active some weeks.

Hodgy is a good signing.  Decent WR and a solid gunner on STs.  Solid signing.

Seibert also used to play for the Browns and he's 'ok'.  Another good signing.

Seibert’s numbers don’t look OK but since we’re going to spend the majority of the time in our own end, probably a good thing we have a legendary punter while paying minimal for a K.

The thing he has going for himself is he is young and maybe can improve on his numbers.   It is really a smallish sample size and just hid 3rd year.

Out of this much maligned WR group, the one who has the highest ceiling is Trinity Benson.  He has good size at 6'1", good sub 4.4 speed and a 40" plus vertical.  He has really good hands and has shown he can go up for a ball and catch it at its peak.  He is not afraid to catch the ball across the middle.  He just could not crack into Denver's talented WR roster.  Trinity had a very good preseason with 8 reception on 8 targets, 80 yards and 2TDs, not including drawing a PI after beating the corner badly.

Detroit was not the only team who was interested in stealing him off of Denver's practice squad, but Detroit was the most aggressive with their offer.  He is the one guy who could take Williams spot as a real WR#1 on the outside.  His biggest obstacles are learning the playbook and creating some chemistry with Goff.

If people would stop crapping all over these guys because they are unproven and start looking at potential, you would see a lot of potential to be a far better team than current expectations.  This is the second youngest roster in the NFL and there is a lot of talent, a lot of heart, and a lot of good coaching.  This is going to be a team which can play defense and consistently move the chains on offense, which is quite different than previously where we needed an elite gunslinger to pull out a miraculous victory after being outplayed for 3.5 quarters.

The timing on this post is unreal, I’ve just spent the last 30 mins scouring the free agency pool in my dynasty league and with a couple of players moving to IR for just now, I’ve lined up Raymond, Hodge and Benson as adds, with Benson being the last one I just did 2 minutes ago.

I figure that there’s at least a reasonable chance that one of these guys could become serviceable and have some value. Agreed on Benson, the Lions committed to getting a trade done for him as they didn’t want to risk losing out on him if he ended up on waivers. Yes, there are more established players like Williams, and a highly drafted guy like St Brown on the roster, but he will get his chances

There is going to be value at WR, probably Tyrell Williams for certain...hard to know if they will be redraft viable though.

There will also be value at RB, Swift already knicked up.  Again, hard to know if the backups will be redraft viable...Williams with the best shot in PPRs.

In general I think the Lions will be a dumpster fire on offense, and I have little to no faith in Dan Campbell as a head coach....of course the fantasy rankings already take this into account.

Swift practiced in full in this week and looked explosive and is not a concern for week 1.  Yes, all the pundits thinks Detroit's coaching staff sucks.  They tell us Detroit's defense is the worst.  They tell is they have the worst running game, the worst receiving core, the worst QB, and Sewell is a bust.  How Detroit's ownership sucks and this team has the worst future.  I can't wait for the season to start to shut up this avalanche of ignorant negativity.  It is gonna take a few weeks and there will be a learning curve, but this team will turn a lot of heads and all these Debbie Downers will be hopping on board on the Dan Campbell hype train saying how they knew he was going to turn things around.

That's all been a pretty good call for the past 20 years or so.

Sure, but there is new ownership,  new GM, new coaching staff, and new players which has brought in a new winning culture which is not like anything seen in this franchise before.   Hamp, Holmes, and Campbell are building something special here.   The negativity is over the top and a lot of it has to do with history which no one here had anything to do with.

Also, it's not just the "pundits"...the betting markets also expect the Lions to be a bottom 5 team.

Dan Campbell isn't doing his self any favors.  Reeks of meathead in his pressers.

Because that is where football games are won by impressing the media.  Dan Campbell is an outstanding coach in the mold of Bill Parcells and the players are 100 percent behind him and will go to war for him.  The media roasts anyone who has some fun.

It is pretty much unanimous.  I just wish Roger's would have left the division, because there would have been real money to be made.  The Lions will be as good as the Bears and Vikings.
