2025 Detroit Lions: 0-0 X-Season in the books. Time for final cuts. (67 Viewers)

@DetroitOnLion

Because I keep hearing from national outlets that the Lions need more edge defenders and their pass rush is suspect, let me educate for a second. In the 2nd half of the season (Week 9 and beyond), the Lions ranked:

- 4th in QB pressures
- 5th in sacks

Houston is the most underrated player in the NFL. IMHO, the dude is capable of being Defensive Player of the Year, but yet is not even listed as a possible candidate on any betting sites. He is as good of a pass rusher as anyone in the NFL. Add in guys who are now healthy, Harris, Pascal, Okwara and the Lions are super deep on the edge with quality guys to go with Hutch. This is largely why Holmes was comfortable drafting luxury positions. The QBs, Edges, and WRs available were not upgrades.

I have to say, Brad Holmes loves speed. Jamo, Gibbs, and now Mims. The price was definitely right as he is basically free. A veteran player who still has lots of upside. He can spread the field while we wait for Jamo. Holmes is da man.

The new Justified season started this week and is set in Detroit. (Justified is also based on the writings of Detroit writer Elmore Leonard). I won't give a recap of the show, it airs on FX and Hulu if you want to check it out. The reason for posting in this thread is in episode 2 one of the characters, bar owner and former bass legend Sweety tells a story to US Marshall Raylan Givens and a Detroit PD Detective about Ra the Sun God. Not sure if it was an easter egg for our boy Amon Ra or if Ra has some other ties to the Motor City.

Also, while checking r/detroitlions to see if anyone had posted a video of the scene I saw a post about @BobbyLayne . I was today years old when I learned about the curse of Bobby Layne (only became a Lions fan after developing the bad habit of drafting Lions RBs year after year in magic football)

Except for maybe PK and KR, are there any positions that we are weak at?

Our offense is stacked. And even with our most explosive player out for six weeks, I am confident that Ben Johnson will get production out of Gibbs, Montgomery, ARSB, LaPorta, Reynolds, Mims and Jones Jr.

Alim is going to be a force on the inside and Buggs will be fine, but the Edge position is overloaded with guys who can get 10 sacks.

Our secondary has more talent than it has ever had. The Lions have had some great individual secondary guys in the past, but never a team that goes 7 deep with guys you would like to start.
This is easily the best complete roster the Lions have ever had. The first time I ever felt confident that the Lions could put up 12 wins. I would actually be disappointed if we only win 10.

Backup QB

I'm pleasantly surprised to see that Levi will practice. I wasn't expecting it. There's a long way to go and who knows how his back will handle it but it's still a nice surprise.

Backup QB

I really think Hooker may end up being the steal of the draft, although he will probably be on the PUP list to start the season and only taken off if Goff gets hurt. Short term, backup QB is a weakness.

The long-awaited Inside the Den covering this year's draft is coming out this week. Will be interesting to see the thinking of how the picks went down. I absolutely loved the draft results and the players we got. I think we will see significant contribution from most of our picks this year.

CJ Gardner-Johnson hurt in practice....a terrible start. Not sure how serious, but was reportedly carted off.

Just heard on The Ticket, said Johnson was visibly upset and slamming his fist on the cart and had to be consoled by teammates. Usually, players know when something is serious.

This would be a huge loss right off the bat. Hopefully it is not an ACL.

They also said it was a non-contact injury...that's never good.

Turns out he appears to be OK. Looks like he had a Paul Pierce sort of knee injury.

This is why people shouldn't over react over news until something is confirmed by the team
To be fair, carted off with a non contact injury is a season ender in the 85-90% range, but also yeah you are correct.

Anytime you see the John Deere take a player off it is usually for the worst.

Hopefully this is just a minor injury.
MRI results are good no significant structural damage to his knee

Good news as Johnson should be an impact player on D.

I wondered if not kicking in OTAs contributed to this. Except for being pathetic beyond 50, he was a pretty good kicker.
Yeah not sure what happened here. Campbell said that Badgely and Patterson were basically the same kicker.
Both accurate except at longer range
They also have Romo in camp. Probably can't rule him out.

Another great move by Holmes. I have this weird feeling…Is this what it feels like to be rooting for a competent franchise?
I have to eat my words. I had previously criticized Holmes for trading for a guy who is going to be cut ala Trinity Benson.
But learning that the trade for Mims counts only if he makes the roster is a good move. Upside to possibly fill a need. Also a vet who provides competition for Greene for replacing Jamo for the 6 weeks.

I didn't even realize Tony Romo could kick.

He kicks better than he holds.

Report from camp that Lions are running La Porta out with all three units to get him ready for the season. Sudfeld continues to be very accurate.

Never in the history of the Detroit Lions have I genuinely been excited about the development of so many players. Look what we have to look forward too:

1. Jamo....will anyone be able to catch him once the ball is in his hands? I think he could be the most explosive and elusive man in the NFL. He is going to shut up a lot of the critics.
2. Gibbs....what can he do once he gets in the open field? Ben will find a ton of ways to get him the ball in the open fid and he is going to have some huge plays.
3. ARSB.... As great as he has been the first two season, he just seems to keep getting better.
4. Houston....Our most dominant pass rushing end since Bubba Baker. I hope the SAM role and rotating to DE works for him and keeps him on the field more. The guy is a wrecking ball every snap he plays.
5. The entire secondary...so much young new talent most of whom has already proven to be very good with the possibility of being great.
6. Sewell. Only 22 years old and is domininent but still has not physically peaked. The dude is going to open up holes I could run through.
7. Hutch. Came on strong at the last half of the season. Works his butt off to improve and will be the most impactful defensive player on the field.
8. LaPorta. Throw the old adage that rookie TEs take time to contribute. This kid is on a mission to br making plays day 1. Easily will be the most productive rookie TE in the best TE class ever.
9. Alim. A lean mesn fighting machine and still comes in at over 300 lbs. He will be a force and tough for the interior guys to stop.

Not to mention Monty who will be getting the tough yards and breaking off a few. The Linebaking crew has tons of upside. Mims has potential to be a great fill-in. Reynolds and Jones Jr. are pretty much known dependable contributors. Goff just needs to continue what he did the last half of the season. Keep his turnovers to a minimum and make those high percentage passes and he will put up big numbers. Throw in a few deep balls now on then to keep the defense honest.

So much upside at every position on the field. Usually with the Lions you have too many positions with lottery tickets and hope. This year it seems like we are playing with a lot of pocket Aces.

Gronk on GMF today said he vetoed the 2018 trade to the Detroit Lions. Said it really wasn’t anything bad about the Lions but that he just wanted to stay with the Patriots . The Patriots went on to win the Super Bowl that year.

Another reason to be hopeful is that we have the cap space to extend our developing stars.

That is why I never care for the discussions of big FA signings. I want to keep a lot of these young guys. There are at least four guys I want to extend, moreso than even Bridgewater who at least makes sense.

Williams has critics for valid reasons. Right now, it is his route running in camp. Williams might be a Deshaun Jackson type, sloppy routes but explosive. Might not be the best route runner or possession type, but can break a long one anytime. Time will tell.

LaPorta looks good but with rookie TEs and WRS you never know when the real games start.

DC worried that the hype train is going too fast, said this team has things to prove.

Bottom line is I/we have never had this kind of optimism.

In other important news the Green Bay Packers have acquired the trademark for and the company that manufactures the cheesehead and related memorabilia.

Must have taken a lot of cheddar to get that deal done. <groan>

Even the current Lions PR department is top notch. I like the Inside the Dens better than Hard Knocks. I will be watching it as soon as it drops.

we'll see how this plays out in the next six months

still wish we would have gone Christian Gonzalez-Nolan Smith-Steve Avila but I'm just some guy on the internet

I love the way Brad reads the draft and is able to accurately project what other teams will do and maximize his draft haul.

NFL Top 100 (through #61)
  • #88 Aidan Hutchinson
  • #67 Amon-Ra St Brown
  • #66 Jared Goff
Hutch and ARSB are debutants; Goff made the list in 2018 (#38) and 2019 (#32)

Might be 1-2 Lions OL repped in the Top 60

Awesome video. Lions believe that their first four picks were within the top 18 players in the entire draft.
Holmes ecstatic to be able to trade down and still get Gibbs. First for me hearing Gibbs compared to Marshall Faulk.

Seeing Holmes and Campbell being in unison as to the picks and type of player they wanted was inspiring.

Sheila’s enthusiasm and presence is what the organization had been so long lacking from ownership.

Anyway I could go but I’ll save some space for the rest of you.

Well we produced a great video now we just have to win some games lol.

aka hubris

it's pretty hilarious the war room is quiet as church when Brad & Dan talking to the picks, then Sheila gets on and can barely hear her convo bc the guys are hyping each other up lol

they got their guys, very reminiscent of a lot of Seattle drafts in the 2010s (or any Mayock/Gruden draft)

hoping it works out

As you said time will tell. It certainly was not a mainstream draft. They didn’t want to wait and believed the first three picks would be starters and help them win now.

They did it their way.

There was a point early on when Campbell complimented Holmes for being patient and waiting for the pick to fall. Holmes has those picks in his pocket and he wants to spend them on his guys.

The video was good in showing the work needed to get a trade done through contacting other teams in succession until you had a partner. Holmes assistant staff burning up the phones as part of it.
.
One more point I think this draft would have looked much different and not for the good if Witherspoon had dropped to us. As sure as shooting Holmes would have traded up for Gibbs.
