2025 Detroit Lions: 0-0 X-Season in the books. Time for final cuts. (68 Viewers)

NFL Top 100 is largely meaningless of course, but it is a vote of peers - it's a players vote

We can probably stop saying Jared doesn't get enough respect

NFL Top 100 QBs
  • 96 - Trevor Lawrence
  • 86 - Justin Fields
  • 82 - Tua Tagovailoa
  • 77 - Geno Smith
  • 72 - Lamar Jackson

Awesome video. Lions believe that their first four picks were within the top 18 players in the entire draft.
Holmes ecstatic to be able to trade down and still get Gibbs. First for me hearing Gibbs compared to Marshall Faulk.

Seeing Holmes and Campbell being in unison as to the picks and type of player they wanted was inspiring.

Sheila’s enthusiasm and presence is what the organization had been so long lacking from ownership.

Anyway I could go but I’ll save some space for the rest of you.

Well we produced a great video now we just have to win some games lol.

The Lions PR group has to be the envy of the league. I really liked how they did not hold back airing a lot the criticism from the experts, and how focused they were on their process and belief in their board and how the organizatiin completely blocked out the outside chatter. Brad only cared about what the other GMs were thinking and how to outmanuever them. Brad had complete mastery over how the draft was flowing and could look twenty moves ahead and have a great feel for how long certain players would last. Brad is the Jedi Master of the Draft and getting better every year.

The Lions do not focus on talent only and are not even that concerned about positions. They draft on personal drive, football intelligence, talent, and athleticism. It would not shock me that when we look back on this draft three years from now, that all seven players drafted will still be on the team making positive contributions....and that is the true measure of a great draft.

wrong thread but man was this a great summer

47 years ago (+ a month)

friend texted me that this morning

every Michigander who was alive then remembers, it was like Beatlemania came to the Mitten
Bird, bird, bird-birds the word

the friend that texted me is around 40, from upstate New York - I thanked him & he texted back:

"I never knew about him. Learned about him through that TikTok video and thought BobbyLayne might know this guy. Haha"

honestly one of the best fan experiences of my life - tragic figure, but for one summer it was absolute magic

@Lions

Lions have signed WR Trey Quinn and waived injured WR Tom Kennedy.

"You're out, Tom"

Always seemed to have a big catch when he got the rare PS call up - had that crosser for a big gainer at Chicago last year that basically won the game for them

The first live 1 on 1 of camp today was a Hutchinson-Sewell stalemate where both guys threw all they had at each other, pretty great. Second rep they had, Hutchinson beat Sewell clean with his hands ... which is nnnnot something we saw a lot of last year.

Sewell was impressed.

saw another tweet yesterday which quoting Penei saying Hutch is a lot stronger this year

aka hubris

it's pretty hilarious the war room is quiet as church when Brad & Dan talking to the picks, then Sheila gets on and can barely hear her convo bc the guys are hyping each other up lol

they got their guys, very reminiscent of a lot of Seattle drafts in the 2010s (or any Mayock/Gruden draft)

hoping it works out
Oh Bobby why did you say that!

Yeah that was my favorite part, almost a running schtick. Also interesting to see everyone's favorite exec Rod Wood (what a great name) right in the middle of everything.

Diisner was the one running the numbers on the trades (5 pick for picks, + the Swift trade); Rod is over on the side in the front row, which schematically is kind of goofy bc MD had to keep running back and forth from the middle of the back row lol.

They would look over at Rod but he's never ever gonna push back on a football decision. Total yes man. What's his background, running the personal real estate portion of the Ford empire? I guess he makes decisions about Ford Field....though IIRC Sheila was the one who pushed up getting rid of slit film turf. Dude adds no value to the process.

see ball get ball

Jack Campbell with the strip & recovery on Netflix

(aside - this might have been the D working on forcing fumbles, but if not....what the heck was Iffy doing in the beginning? dude needs to step up this year or he won't be finishing his rookie contract.)

Campbell started off his presser today talking about how much Chris Spielman contributes to the franchise; he's the one guy that will always tell him what he needs to hear and not what people think he wants to hear.

CJGJ back at it today, though he'll be limited. MJJ and Jamo still rehabbing. Sounds like Marvin is close, Jameson is not. Moseley had a cleanup procedure and will be in Monday. No one is giving a timeline but my sense is he won't be contributing until after the bye week.

Had a lot of praise for Brian Branch who has 6 PBUs this week. Even lining him up outside and he's doing well (though that's not where they see him being used.)

Also talked a bit about Jonah and Alim who both had a good first day in pads.

Love Spielman as a player and his passion for football and the Lions.
He was hired as a special consultant even before Campbell and Holmes were hired.

When he was a TV announcer you could detect sometimes his disappointment in the Lions performance.

His willingness and ability to take on multiple tasks within the organization is invaluable.

His brother Rick was a long time GM for the Vikings and I assume that this helped him gain insights on how NFL management worked.

Campbell acknowledging Spielman demonstrates the collaborative approach the Lions embrace. I hope Spielman continues with the Lions for a long time.

I noticed in that YouTube video Barry riding with Gibbs and Spielman riding with Jack Campbell. Was Chris at the draft, maybe I missed him in the room?

He was up by the screen / tv in the front of the room, he only shows up a couple times in side angle shots. Been in the war room all 3 years bc I remember him being in on Penei / Hutch celebrations. Probably saw Dan take the shot from Brad after the Gibbs pick & decided to hang back this year lol.

Read the other day his routes were not good.

Basically, missed most of last season. going to miss 35% of this season. Hope he comes back with fire but there always seems to be lot of noise around Williams.
He seems to have the microscope on him for everything he does or says. Expectations for him are so high.

Ideally, Mims will step up and be WR2. He has the most upside to be a top WR.

Mims stat line nothing great in his first three years, but he has been two head coaches and a slew of crappy QB's which include Zack Wilson and Sam Darnold, and with Joe Flacco filling in at times.
Yeah, if Mims hits for the Lions it almost doesn't matter what happens with Jameson.

If both hit, watch out.

Jamo's floor is Mims ceiling. In his very limited time in 6 games with no camp as a rookie recovering from a major injury, he had:
1. 41-yard TD
2. 40-yard run where he ran around defenders like they were standing still.
3. 65-yard TD reception against the Pack called back on a holding penalty.
4. A 45-yard should have been TD where he burnt Sauce and the Jets secondary by 5-yards only to be severely underthrown by Goff.

Yes, Jamo needs to get out there and perform, but there is no doubt he has elite talent and elite speed on the order of Tyrek Hill. I habe zero worries about Jamo abilities and really not concerned about his alledged character issues.

MCDC addressed the Zylstra situation to start his presser today

they cut him the day after he got hurt. I know he’ll get an injury settlement but man what a cutthroat life.

anyway, Campbell talked about they don’t want that, it’s preventable, it’s been addressed, but tough break…gotta move forward.

Injury updates:

Penei Sewell

The Lions right tackle appeared to have no limitations on his play after being out since Saturday while in concussion protocol. With Sewell back at practice, Matt Nelson moved back to the second-team offense at right tackle.

Sam LaPorta

At his pre-practice press conference, coach Dan Campbell revealed that LaPorta was dealing with an ankle injury last practice, but it was not considered serious.

“He just had a little bit of an ankle. He’ll be back out there today running around, so we’ll see how he feels with it,” Campbell said.

During practice, LaPorta participated in both individual and team drills, and got plenty of work with the first-team offense. So, as long as his body responds favorably to the work, there is no cause for concern here.

Frank Ragnow
While we don’t know for sure why Ragnow was missing from Wednesday’s practice, there is a pretty likely explanation: it’s around the time when Frank and his wife, Lucy, were expecting their first child.

In Ragnow’s place was Graham Glasgow taking first-team center reps, with Halapoulivaati Vaitai as the starting right guard.

Ifeatu Melifonwu

Melifonwu’s absence could be more serious. According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, Melifonwu is dealing with a knee injury. Reporters did not spot him out there—even in street clothes—during Wednesday’s practice, which isn’t a great sign.

Melifonwu’s young career has been plagued by injuries. In his rookie season, he spent seven weeks on Injured Reserve with a quad injury. Last year, he missed another six games with injuries to his hamstring and ankle.

The Lions got an extra look at Saivion Smith and Brady Breeze with the second-team defense with Melifonwu out.

Trinity Benson

Toward the end of practice, Benson went down with a leg injury and had to be carted off. I did not see what happened to Benson specifically on the play. While it’s not promising when a player has to be carted off, it’s worth noting that teams are particularly careful this time of year when it comes to injuries. Let’s hope we get some good news with Benson in the near future.

Emmanuel Moseley

Moseley is back in the building after reportedly having a second procedure on his knee—although it was just a “clean-up” surgery, per the Detroit Free Press. With him back in the building, he is now officially on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. At this point, it’s unclear when Moseley will return to the field to practice from his torn ACL, but he is eligible to play whenever he clears a physical. Back at the opening of camp, Campbell explained that his return to practice was going to be longer than originally expected.

“He will start on PUP when he arrives and it’s probably going to be a little bit longer than what we hoped for,” Campbell said. “And that’s really predicated on the work that was going. He was progressing so fast, so we’re going to put the brakes on a little bit. I don’t want to say setback, but it’ll be a little bit longer.”

The experts really beat up the Lions for the Brodric Martin pick, I saw grades like D+. But it looks like Brodric is pushing Buggs for the starting job next to Alim and should at least see significant time on a rotational basis. Late 3rd round for a starter D-lineman is a pretty darn good value. 👍

We could see 5 starters in this rookie draft class for a team which is projected to be a serious contender. That is a massive haul.

Anybody want to venture a guess on if Lions sign Bridgewater? I get the impression he's waiting to see if a QB goes down before taking a backup gig.

I go back and forth on how much I value a back-up QB. It's nice to have a competent QB who can step in and give the team a chance to win a few games over a 4-6 game stretch, like Cooper Rush did for Dallas last year . Any more than that and I have a hard time imagining Bridgewater leading a team to the playoffs.

If Sudfeld is the backup I won't be that freaked out because like most teams I think the Lions are f'ed without their starting QB. A guy like Bridgetwater would only give me false hope should Goff go down, although I do hope the Lions sign him anyway.

I agree with your sentiments & strongly prefer having a backup with game experience. Not sure why a deal has never gotten done, they’ve been talking to him for months.

"Yeah, Brodic's raw. And then we knew that when we got him, he's young, and he's raw. But there again, we see improvement. He's got to drop his pads. He plays too high right now. But you can see a guy who's working through it, he's working. His footwork is getting better and this will be another level of growth for him today. You know, this will, you play high without pads then, you know, you play high in pads it's going to be worse. But he knows that and he'll just, we just keep hitting him on it. But he's no different than any of these rookies, really, I've seen some growth from spring to through the first four practices. But he's raw. You know, he's got a long way to go." - Dan Campbell
